What a grape story!.......2005-11-13

It never would have occurred to me that grape juice had not always been available since wine has been around since Noah, but this story tells the quest for Dr. Welch's grape drink that most of us take for granted. You'll never endure another commercial by Larry King (for Welch's Grape Juice) without thinking of this book! It would be an interesting classroom introduction to researching where various products we now take for granted actually originated; kids in middle school might even be inclined to write their own picture books and illustrate them as part of a learning unit.

A fine picturebook biography written for young readers.......2005-06-14

Sherry Meidell provides realistic and fun drawings to accompany an unusual biographical topic: the story of Dr. Welch's invention of the grape drink. THE GREAT GRAPE DOCTOR.......2005-04-22

How often do you suppose folks simply say, "Please pass the Welch's" rather than asking for the jam, jelly or juice? Frequently, I'd suppose because the Welch products have become so much a part of our culture, very much like "Kleenex" or "Coke." Surely in 1869 Thomas Bramwell Welch had no idea that some day a company bearing his name would be the world's leading producer of grape products.

Mary Lou Carney focuses on a small part of the good doctor's life - specifically when he began to think that grapes could be used to make a sweet drink. After all, he reasoned, grapes were used to make wine, why not a soft drink?

It took a bit of experimentation and a lot of work, but he was right. His story is told in highly readable fashion, and accompanied by charming period watercolor illustrations.

Notwithstanding this book's overtly attractive cover and covertly clever title, it features that profound depth and understanding of those fragility's of the human condition that subtitle such as "Courage, Conviction & Conversations" might gain readership. The writer, using (without biting) a tongue-in-cheek literary style, is able to discuss Life, Love, Family & Survival as it "is" in the real world and not succumb to phantasmagoric pretensions nor fanciful fabrication. The author, de Nuccio, has gifted acumen of contemplating peoples and problems akin to sand & seaweed vis-a-vis tiny tidal surges searching for safe harbour. In so doing, the author's rhetoric rolls off the pages like that of the accomplished stand-up comedian with loud laughter, buffoonery, mirth and a splash of well-timed obscenities to lend it both charm and elegance for baby boomers, beautiful people (jet set), Wasps, wannabes & LOL.

So, what's the book about? It deals with an AOL dating service (yes, that AOL!), Hollywood producers, agents, writers, a very successful Father too rarely home, Breven, Larry, Mario, Peter, Kril, an almost octogenarian Mitchell who's discovered phone sex to proclaim the three functions of orgasm, therapist Annika, a dog Sheila who chews on Silicone BIs and lastly soul mate Gavin.

The author's sprinkling of poetry appends delight, reference to offspring affixes authenticity, description of automotive and plumbing problems adds validity to real people conquering real problems with a deja vu atmosphere referenced by germane adages, proverbs and engaging repartee.

If you just want to laugh, buy the book. If you want to understand yourself better, read the book. But if you are betwixt the Lion and the Tin Man of the Wizard of Oz, read the book twice and regale in its revelations. A bargain and a replacement for your therapist -- we need to hear more from this writer, Laurie de Nuccio.

Hard Hitting History with Important Lessons About Guerilla War.......2007-06-04

Street Without Joy is an excellent work by Bernard Fall about the French War in Indochina (also known as the First Indochina War). It is an honest, hard hitting history book that traces the struggles of both the French and the Vietnamese as they fought an eight year long war mostly in the northern part of Vietnam.
Bernard Fall writing is clear and easy to follow for the average reader. He is at his best when giving an analysis on battles like Bac Khan (Operation Lea), the Border Campaign (with the Chinese border), and Dien Bien Phu. Fall puts these battles in perspective by comparing them with other battles in French military history (e.g. the Battle of Quebec was cited in comparison with the Border Campaign). In addition, he gives an excellent description of the nature of guerilla warfare, and how the French, fighting a conventional war, were unable to adapt to this form of war.
Although one may find history of the Vietnam War a touchy subject (especially when compared to today's war in Iraq), Street Without Joy is nevertheless an excellent book for anyone learning about counterinsurgency. I would recommend this book as part of the US Army's recommended reading list for leaders as opposed to books on the Civil War, which I find it to be more romance than serious history.

How Soon We Forgot!.......2006-06-23

The French involvement in Vietnam or Indochina has always been fascinating. France vainly tried to hang on to its far-flung and difficult to administer far eastern colonies after WW II without success. Bernard Fall was by far the expert on this endeavor and explains the intracasies and operations conducted by France in this failed attempt at maintaining their grip on their doomed colonialism. The book is extremely detailed, insightful, and tactically precise. This book should have been commited to memory by our military and political leaders during the early to middle 60s. We may not have repeated the historical mistakes, or maybe it was fate that we did. Once you are finished with this book, immediately read Fall's "Hell in A Very Small Place." It is as equally excellent.

This Is Not A Simulation Text.......2000-08-30

[...] The previous review in its own right appears to be asimulation model of the ideal Book that doesn't exist. However, Paul Fishwick's Book is quite inadequate and subpar. Firstly, the Book is outdated, being published in 1995 and excluding many of the recent findings in the field. Secondly, the Book does not teach Simulation Theory. The author either assumes the student already knows simulation or simply wishes to deceive the student into believing thats somehow whats being taught. Fishwick's Book is quite inadequate, outdated, and far from being considered an adequate text on simulation. Fishwick's Book details only one aspect of simulation which is the graphical representation of modeling which is largely regarded a quite insignificant and minor feature of simulation theory.

Excellent resource.......2000-07-25

This text is well written and easy to follow. The concepts are explained clearly and thoroughly. The text is supported well with excellent diagrams and illustrations that help convey the concepts. The exercises at the end of chapters are challenging, thought provoking, and enhance the learning experience.

The organization of the material is excellent. The text provides complete coverage of the subject. The bridging of the theoretical concepts to the application of these concepts to real world problems is excellent. The beginning chapters provide the background knowledge and a solid foundation of the subject to build on. The following chapters cover different simulation model designs. By exploring different ways to think and reason about any system, you will gain an appreciation for alternative approaches for a model design and their ramifications. After completing the text, you will understand simulation methodology as well as how to apply it to solve real world problems.

Dr. Fishwick's use of an interdisciplinary approach in explaining concepts with examples provides an open environment for creativity and imagination for applying the knowledge gained. He teaches an object oriented approach which provides a method of looking at any real world system at any level of abstraction for design of a meaningful model. In my opinion, this approach in teaching the subject of simulation is very effective in understanding the material as well as learning how to use theory in a practical and useful way to solve real world problems. He is extremely knowledgeable in all areas of simulation and modeling and has excellent ideas on further advancement of the field. His ideas are sound and well thought out. Myself having a background in industry and now pursuing further education, I am of the opinion that Dr. Fishwick is an expert is the academia arena as well as in the industry arena.

The subject is presented in an interesting way that creates a motivating and enthusiastic pursuit of the field of simulation and modeling. This is one of the best textbooks I have ever used. I recommend this text highly.

Useful text.......2000-07-07

This book's breadth of coverage is above average. It addresses nearly all of the basic simulation model designs in enough detail to allow the reader to come away with a good understanding of each of them. It does not focus on simulation and modeling in specific contexts, but rather on the general ideas behind and processes of modeling. On those occasions where more detail would aid in the illustration of concepts, that detail is provided. Lastly, the book addresses subjects such as conceptual modeling and multimodeling that are not usually covered in many other texts - concepts which are only now, some years after the publishing of the book, coming to the forefront of simulation and modeling research. Overall, use of the book should allow the reader to develop a creative, yet disciplined approach to simulation and modeling in its most abstract senses. A few words about another (anonymous, Lake Worth) review: I felt that "Ad Hominem" attacks and gross characterizations did not do the book the justice it deserves. Plus, the author of the review didn't take credit for it - what does that tell you?

book is not right for beginners.......2000-05-08

iam a graduate student who used this book in my simulation course. i didn't have a solid background in this subject and i found it very difficult to understand the concepts in the book. i needed a lot of help from my prof. not for beginners is my opinion

Book is overrated, has little usefulneess........2000-05-06

Well, it seems clearly evident that here is another example of a academician writing a Book for the sole purpose of inflating his carreer but the Book in its own right is not worth the paper it was written on and entirely useless. The Book is poorly written and choppy. One has difficulty following the author's trend of thought,( it is doubtful the author has established one). More importantly , however, the Book oversimplifies the theoretical aspects of simulation and presents a completely wastful and inadequate treatment of the subject matter. This book is for people who enjoy drawing pictures and nothing more. Thats all you will be doing. The book fails to treat simulation concepts fully and those concepts that are dealt with are oversimplified and misrepresented. It seems clear tht the author's intent is not to teach simulation, but, rather to give the reader the false impression that somehow thats what the subject matter deals with. To prove my point, refer to 'Simulating Modeling and Analysis' by Law and Kelton and find out how inadequate Fishwick's Book really is.

This book was a required text for a graduate level course I took in Ecological Restoration. It provides a comprehensive overview of ecological theories that should be considered as a context for restoration design. The topics covered range in scale from landscape and population ecology to plant genetics. It is a valuable resource to all who are interested in ecological restoration.

A Comprehensive study for the serious minded........2007-02-16

The book is an extremely thorough look at the many aspects of Ecology Restoration, and compiles and summarizes the extensive research done to date in depth. The writing style demands reader concentration and compares well with academic texts. (not an easy read)
