Written by three veteran consumer experts who escaped the rat race, Invest in Yourself is a comprehensive guide for saving money and becoming a better person in the process. The book offers six secrets to the rich life--the first is to determine what you want in a career, write Marc Eisenson, Gerri Detweiler, and Nancy Castleman. "By carefully investing your time, energy, and maybe a little money, you can find out where you really want to go--and then do what you need to get there," they write. "It's one of your best investment opportunities, way better than anything you can get in the stock market." The other five keys: invest in intangibles like family and friends; pay off debts and get into a 401(k); keep learning new skills; manage your own money and get an "ace in the hole"--a tiny business of your own. Invest in Yourself offers a myriad of tips for squeezing the most out of a dollar. It tells you how to negotiate to get the best price on just about anything, including motel rooms and used cars, and gives the lowdown on turning your kids into savers and investors, controlling college bills, cutting home buying costs, and planning for retirement. The book is also a good clearinghouse for Web sites, helpful phone numbers, and information about newsletters like Loose Change and The Cheapskate Monthly.

The authors know first hand how to live a simple life and reduce expenses. Eisenson and Castleman left behind the big city and started a pro-consumer newsletter in a rented dream home in the country. They very rarely go to stores, preferring yard sales and thrift shops; they grow much of their own food; and practically everything they buy is used. If it breaks, they fix it. Cowriter Gerri Detweiler chucked her executive post with a large credit-education organization and made it as a writer and consultant. If you're thinking of making a similar move, this book might be a good investment. It's also for anyone looking for some ways to stay on a tight budget or for people just joining the working world. --Dan Ring

4 out of 5 stars Geared Toward Folks With Families, But Singles Can Benefit, Too.......2007-04-11

I already knew most of the secrets explained at length in this book. However, I must agree with Secret #3: Wherever you work, be in business for yourself. The old covenant between individuals, private enterprise and government no longer holds. Those of you (including this reviewer) working for a living would do well to become a bit more entrepreneurial.

Having read more than a few personal finance books, I can say that this book is very good for someone who has been pretty much in the dark about his or her finances. I highly recommend it to the highly indebted wage-earners out there who want to get a grip on their personal finances.

1 out of 5 stars simply terrible, unless your a tramp .......2005-03-22

The truth is this is a Book for PENNYPINCHERS, presented in a more "respectable" fashion with a shiny cover and bullet-headings (it should be called "PENNYPICHERS GUIDE for the ModernDay). Now theres nothing wrong with saving bucks where you can and being abit of a PennyPincher when you want to work towards financial independence or some other higher goal in life... but this book wants you to live like a Tramp!

This book will NOT teach you how to make money, it will not show motivate yourself to perform better in life, it will not help you become a Millionare... or become financially independent.

instead the advice it offers is at the other end of the spectrum, it tells you how to live like a Tramp, basically how to "get away from the city" and move to a farm on the outskirts. How to survive in a Cave or on top of a mountain (where you dont have to pay a mortgage!), it details how to grow your vegitables (3 non-stop pages dedicated to gardening), how to buy your clothes from BootSales, how to basically "DOWNGRADE" and "SLOWDOWN" your life to be One with mothernature.

now some of the advice is good, like spending more time with your family, giving children limited pocket money to teach them value of it etc. but i was disapointed in this book because there is hardly no advice on how to become successful and be rich.

So if you want to sell your city apartment and live in a cave, growing your own food, sewing your own clothes, and running around with wild horses... then by all means go ahead and buy this book.

If you (like me) thought that this book will teach you about Money, how to earn more, how to spend it WISELY (big difference between being MoneyWise and downright STINGY!) and how to one day become financially independent...then sadly you will be disapointed so think about giving it a miss.

advice: checkyour local bookshop and see if you can pickup this book for cheap, for a book that preaches frugality and pennypinching it came at a farily high price to my wallet! and just flick through and read a few pages before you buy -

                          Book Description

This book is an introduction to coordination, solid state, and descriptive inorganic chemistry. It is designed primarily for a sophomore inorganic chemistry audience, but could also be used as a supplementary text for some general chemistry courses. Coordination, solid state, and descriptive inorganic chemistry are each given their own self-standing sections, so that the reader can begin in any one of them without becoming frustrated at references to previously learned material. These self-standing chapters also allow you the flexibility to present material in the order you choose.

                          1 out of 5 stars Useless Class.......2002-08-08

I will not say too much. I think it will be enough to quote from Ayn Rand's "The Voice of Reason; Essays in Objectivist Thought". The book written and the class taught by Glen Rodgers is "perceptual level history, history as nothing but a torrent of unrelated, disintegrated concretes."

This is a poorly written textbook. The worst part is you have to buy the solutions manual separately and I can't find it anywhere.

For anyone outside my comfort zone, they know me only as a reserved quiet girl. It takes me years to warm up to people. I have very few friends and love my alone time. But I have this silly, naughty, slightly nuts girl inside me that not many get to see and my writing allows her to be expressed and shared in a comfortable way. For me that is so much fun...Never underestimate the power of a smile, giggle or laugh...I sure hope I can give you at least one.

In a field where many poets tackle the meaning of life, the pursuit of peace, the wonders of nature or share their heartaches and observations with the world, W. Salvatore's poetry is humorously outlandish and wonderfully refreshing to read. That's not to say that her poems don't explore heavy subjects, such as death, freedom or love; it's just that she pokes good fun at them while delivering the moral. Her book had me giggling well after I finished it. If you are looking for zany-adult humor, (and I do mean a-d-u-l-t) I highly recommend this book.

Christian Appy's Patriots: The Vietnam War Remembered from All Sides is an oral history that serves as a "final public record" from many who have struggled publicly with the war for 20 or 30 years. The book is also a monumental effort to capture voices long unheard and ensure that the words are not lost to a new generation.

He includes statements from significant political and military figures from both sides of the conflict, including William Westmoreland, Alexander Haig, Nikita Kruschev's son Sergei, and Vice President Nguyen Thi Bihn. But he tempers these with the voices of a World Airways stewardess who accompanied troops out of the war zone, of the widow of the immolated Norman Morrison, and of numerous Vietnamese and American non-combatants whose lives were torn by the conflagration. These tales, and the contributions from poets, writers, and activists transform the book into a epic dialogue. Indeed, Appy says that he chose the title Patriots not out of a presumed understanding of how that word should be defined, but rather because it served as a locus for so many of the inner struggles of his interviewees: "In what ways might patriotism be a force for good or inspire noble sacrifice, and when does it become a club for stifling dissent and a rallying cry for unjustifiable destruction."

Patriots is a book that will reawaken memories--horrific and jubilant--for those who lived through the troubled 1960s and 1970s; and for those just coming to understand the war, it will make vivid the trials of a different time and place. This is a lasting, powerful book that's essential reading for students of the Vietnam conflict. --Patrick O'Kelley

                                Book Description

Christian G. AppyÂ's monumental oral history of the Vietnam War is the first work to probe the warÂ's path through both the United States and Vietnam. These vivid testimonies of 135 men and women span the entire history of the Vietnam conflict, from its murky origins in the 1940s to the chaotic fall of Saigon in 1975. Sometimes detached and reflective, often raw and emotional, they allow us to see and feel what this war meant to people literally on all sides—Americans and Vietnamese, generals and grunts, policymakers and protesters, guerrillas and CIA operatives, pilots and doctors, artists and journalists, and a variety of ordinary citizens whose lives were swept up in a cataclysm that killed three million people. By turns harrowing, inspiring, and revelatory, Patriots is not a chronicle of facts and figures but a vivid human history of the war.

Well, my professor made it a requirement for the class to purchase this book for class discussions. I do not have to tell you that I was HOT, this book is in addition to the 3 books we purchased that the school requires (as we all know school books are not cheap).

Not only was I mad that I had to purchase this book, but the class is called hist 450 (the 1960's), my professor informs us that we would primarily focus on The Vietnam War. I knew the Vietnam War would of course be covered, but so many other things happened in the 60s; assassinations, sit-ins, 68 elections, etc.. Well to my ignorant surprise this book and this class has been the most interesting and entertaining of all my classes throughout my college career.

This book is oral history. The book is a compilation of people who fought, were affected or affected the war. They tell what they did and what they saw. I saw the war from a whole other side. Wonderful book, very well written and a must read.

Christian G. Appy's "Patriots: The Vietnam War Remembered from All Sides" is such a dense work of history and witness that it takes a certain amount of concentration and simple fortitude for the average reader to get through it. And yet I continued to plug away, chapter by chapter or, some days, testimonial by testimonial. The content more than makes up for the effort put in, though. As the title claims, this IS "Vietnam... from all sides." A reader could know little to nothing about how and why the U.S. had anything to do with Vietnam and come away from Appy's book with quite a base of knowledge on the subject. His in-depth coverage of the Vietnam War of the 1960s begins where it should--the Vietnamese fight to gain independence from the French in the 1950s. It follows all the way through to the U.S. withdrawal from the country in 1975 and the "Legacies" left behind. It also discusses how Communism, religion, economics, even egos, contributed to the flash points that held this particular war in place.

Appy supports this backbone of history running through "Patriots" with the personal accounts of those the war touched. These witnesses range from common Vietnamese on either side of the 17th parallel to military personnel and politicians of those nations involved, to top American policy makers who kept the U.S. engaged against major public protest at home. It's a bit alarming, watching current news coverage of the Iraq War while reading about so much of the same from 40+ years ago, right down to what many believe is the deceptive tactics used by both U.S. governments to get involved in both foreign wars.

What I find most important about Christian Appy's "Patriots" are the lessons--both those that have been learned in the ensuing years, and those still waiting for our comprehension to catch up. While this IS a densely packed book on intense subject matter about a dark period in our collective history, those who are interested in learning from our country's past mistakes (on a grand scale) shouldn't shy away from taking this book on.

I was so moved by this book I wrote the writer an email. Being raised in an environment with Vets and never really understanding an inkling of what they might be talking about, I grabbed this book thinking it would be a good basic history to read up on. Then the Interviews began, kept rolling on, and I soon realized that the person who put together these interviews, juxtaposed them, and kept no "category" unheard from did an incredible job. If you came upon this book with any interest in humanity, and understanding War from an personal perspective of those involved from all sides, you would be insane to pass up the chance to read it. Priceless. I would pay 100$ for a soft copy, if thats what was necessary. Even just to read it again.

My reason? To find out what it was all about.

Christian G. Appy's "Patriots the Vietnam war remembered from all sides" answered a lot of the mystery.

This is amoung the finest of books I've ever read. Appy really did an outstanding job researching such a vast array of people and circumstances.

This book should be "required reading" for anyone who had a son or daughter who served in that mess. I strongly urge anyone who was a vet of that war, or any other war, to read this book. It reveals things kept hidden and it will truly open your eyes.

I have purchased some copies, via Amazon, for gifts and I'm sure I'll be ordering more soon.

This is a really enjoyable read.I can't recommend this one highly enough.Give it to anyone who is thinking of enlisting ,they will think twice .The thing that really stuck with me about this book is how people far removed from actual combat(generals, politicians, airline attendents etc)will still look back at Vietnam as a good idea.Yet if you listen to those in the trenches ,face to face with the "enemy" they are the one's who don't think it was such a great idea.

                                    Book Description

Everywhere they are dancing. From Oklahoma City's huge Red Earth celebration to fund-raising events at local high schools, powwows are a vital element of contemporary Indian life on the Southern Plains. Some see it as tradition, handed down through the generations. Others say it's been sullied by white participation and robbed of its spiritual significance. But, during the past half century, the powwow has become one of the most popular and visible expressions of the dynamic cultural forces at work in Indian country today.

Clyde Ellis has written the first comprehensive history of Southern Plains powwow culture-an interdisciplinary, highly collaborative ethnography based on more than two decades of participation in powwows. In seeking to determine what "powwow people" mean by so designating themselves, he addresses how the powwow and its role in contemporary Indian identity have changed over time-along with its songs and dances-and how Indians for nearly a century have used dance to define themselves within their communities.

A Dancing People shows that, whether understood as an intertribal or tribally specific event, dancing often satisfies needs and obligations that are not met in other ways-and that many Southern Plains Indians organize their lives around dancing and the continuity of culture that it represents. As one Kiowa elder explained, "When I go to [these dances], I'm right where those old people were. Singing those songs, dancing where they danced. And my children and grandchildren, they've learned these ways, too, because it's good, it's powerful."

Ellis tells us not only why and how Southern Plains powwow culture originated, but also something about what it means. He explores powwow's cultural and historical roots, tracing suppression by government advocates of assimilation, Indian resistance movements, internal tribal disputes, and the emergence of powerful song and dance traditions. He also includes a series of conversations and interviews with powwow people in which they comment on why they go to dances and what the dances mean to them as Indian people.

An insightful study of performance, ritual, and culture, A Dancing People also makes an important statement about the search for identity among Native Americans today.

                                    4 out of 5 stars A tour de thingamabob!.......2003-03-16

This is an invaluable book, especially for writers, designers and hardware store-goers who need to know what a thing is actually/properly called (lest they resort to constructions like "the wizbo," "the whatchamacallit," and "the whosis".) Look up a word in the index, then turn to a photo or diagram that illustrates it, with all of its component parts identified by name. Everything from a 747's cockpit to 20 kinds of windows (including those on a slot-machine) are among the thousands of listings. That the book doesn't get five stars is owing only to the fact that the index uses a type which is too small for old eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent visual reference.......2002-01-03

Unfortunately, this book is now out of print, but if you can find a second-hand copy somewhere, grab it. "What's What" covers pretty much the same ground as DK Publishing's "Ultimate Visual Dictionary". If you own both (and I do) you'll find that they compliment each other quite nicely. "What's What" covers areas that the other book doesn't (courtrooms and prison yards, for example, are presented with labels, for instance -- very helpful if you're writing a courtroom or prison story and you want to know what the names of everything are.) Likewise, "Ultimate Visual" covers areas that "What's What" doesn't.

In short, both books are essential to writers, researchers, or anyone who just wants to know what the name of something is.
