Lessons from top moneymakers, newsmakers, and pacemakers in the markets
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2004-06-09
Investing Under Fire is a very interesting collection of essays by 30 luminaries from various fields, some of them not at all related to investing. Each selection contains at least a thought or two to repay the effort of perusal, and that's a great deal more than many books deliver, especially books about investing. The anthology's five segments cover mutual funds, key sectors - from Asia to precious metals, research and legal resources, innovative companies and geopolitical influences. Anyone who merely reads the first selection, by Vanguard founder John Bogle, and applies its lessons, would more than recapture the purchase price of the book. Despite the sometimes self-promotional comments from a few of the other contributors, it's a very valuable book. If nothing else, we note, it will expose you to a spectrum of diverse opinions, a useful prophylactic against complacency.

An especially recommended "inside scoop".......2003-09-19
Edited by global market strategist and foreign affairs expert Alan R. Ackerman, Investing Under Fire: Winning Strategies From The Masters For Bulls, Bears, And The Bewildered authoritatively presents expert testimony from financial experts concerning the hazards and opportunities awaiting investors in the constantly changing present and future. From biotech; to the Chinese market; to available legal recourses; to examples of what investors should look for when reading between the lines of an annual report, Investing Under Fire is an especially recommended "inside scoop" of thoughtful extrapolations and solidly practical advice for those who are somewhat experienced with investing, yet are seeking to learn more of the increasingly complex and volatile financial and global markets.
Wonderful Overview.......2003-06-17
This is a great book. A must for anyone who wants to understand the current state of the U.S. economy and the global economy. I have seen Alan Ackerman on T.V. a few times and always enjoyed his advice.
The book is well done and the roster of contributors is very impressive. I cannot recall a book that had such a wide and important variety of industry leaders and analysts.
There were so many interesting and important points that it is difficult to mention them all. In short, the book is cautiously optimistic and is a must have for anyone who wants to be prepared for the future.

Book Description
This Very Short Introduction traces the history and cultural impact of the elements on humankind, and examines why people have long sought to identify the substances around them. Looking beyond the Periodic Table, the author examines our relationship with matter, from the uncomplicated vision of the Greek philosophers, who believed there were four elements - earth, air, fire, and water - to the work of modern-day scientists in creating elements such as hassium and meitnerium. Packed with anecdotes, The Elements is a highly engaging and entertaining exploration of the fundamental question: what is the world made from?
Customer Reviews:
The elements of elements.......2005-10-02
If you are familiar with this series, you will not be surprised to learn that this book is not a conventional tour of the periodic table. In fact, the table does not make an appearance until half way through. Part of what the author does is to illustrate the impact of Earth's elements on human history. The stories of oxygen and gold are singled out for particular attention. This is not the book you need for a first chemistry course. It is what you need to get you enthused about the subject, to help you appreciate what an exciting and significant discipline it can be.
This fine series is slightly marred by a tendency to typographic error. This book is no exception, and you will struggle to make sense of figure 15(b). Oddly, in the list of figures at the front, there is a request that readers notify the publishers of errors in the list. I don't think I've seen anything quite like that in any book before. It suggests that they realize they have a proofreading problem. Instead of asking readers to be on the alert, wouldn't it be better just to have a word with the printer?
At 179 pages, this is one of the longer entries in the series, and every page glows with the author's enthusiasm for his subject. It adopts a rambling, somewhat unstructured approach but is packed full of fascinating historical and scientific detail. And yes, when the author does finally get around to the periodic table, he gives as good an explanation of it as you will find anywhere.

Book Description
Accepting the award for 2020's Pennsylvania Broadcaster of the Decade, the technologically abhorrent Bart Garrison dies, leaving WBAG-AM in Woodburg to his sexually confused son and triggering an incredible string of disastrous events. The station, nearly silent and dark, is bought by former competitor Henry Bickel, who lost his own operation to Multi-Band, a national broadcast conglomerate with the inexorable ability to subconsciously compel certain groups of people into acts of public perversion. From the grave, Bart alerts his employees of this power through overnight DJ Jim Lockett, who warns longtime morning man and town lush KJ Carter. But not before a candlelight vigil on the town square that erupts into an exhibition beyond anyone's wildest fantasy-or nightmare.
Book Description
Deftly blending history with autobiography, action with analysis, the legendary Marine general Victor "Brute" Krulak offers here a riveting insider's chronicle of U.S. Marines--their fights on the battlefield and off, and their extraordinary esprit de corps. He not only takes a close look at the Marine experience during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam--wars in which Krulak was himself a participant--but also examines the foundation on which the Corps is built. In doing so, he helps answer the question of what it means to be a Marine and how the Corps has maintained such a consistently outstanding reputation. First to Fight has been included on the Marine Corps's recommended reading list for many years.
Customer Reviews:
First to Fight...easy read.......2007-09-26
This is an excellent book written by Gen Krulak. It gives an inside/personal look at Marine Corps history that many historians don't have access to. The main focus throughout the book is how the Marine Corps has dodged the "chopping block" many times prior and the authors point of view of why the USMC is so important to national security.
A Quick and Interesting Read.......2007-04-11
I love this book. When it first came out, I passed it by in the book stores, thinking it was just another compilation of sea stories, but man as I ever wrong.
I had the pleasure of serving under Capt. Charles Krulak, who eventually became Commandant, for a brief period of time and I used to work with a man who was "Brute" Krulak's personal chef, so the name was not entirely new to me.
After having served four years in the Corps, including an abbreviated tour in Vietnam, I knew how the Corps was, but I had no idea how it really came to be the institution that it is, except of course, for the tales of glory I heard in Boot Camp.
Anyone who has ever served in the Corps should read this book. Anyone who is thinking of joining the Corps should read this book. In fact, anyone who has any connection at all with anyone who has any connection at all with anyone who is in any way connected to the Marine Corps should read this book.
Bureaucracy at it's Worst .......2007-01-23
Excellent book that narrates about what is rarely narrated about: How the Marine Corps had to fight government bureaucracy to survive. A very different perspective on the USMC's history. A true underdog/dark horse -type story. Very little about the wars fought, but about the intra-government conspiracies and maneuverings to neuter, eradicate, and destroy the USMC. It shows how the USMC had to do more with less and still excel. This one has a happy ending and a fortunate one for us all in the USA.
Old Corps to New Corps.......2005-10-01
In August of 1965, I was a slick-sleeved Marine Corps private stopping off in Okinawa on my way to Vietnam. During my short stay in Okinawa, my unit had the privilege to stand in formation for the then 3rd Marine Amphibious Force commander, LtGen "Brute" Krulak. Before his hasty troop inspection commenced, our company first sergeant warned all of us not to look down on the general as he passed in front of each of us. Brute was a giant of a man in legend and lore, but only about five foot six in stature. As a private who wished to gain a stripe or two sometime in the future, I kept my eyes straight ahead as the general not only stopped in front of me, but took my M-14 during my "inspection arms" movement. I remember holding my breath, deathly afraid that somehow I had ruined any chance for earning even one stripe in my Marine Corps career. Fortunately, he handed back the M-14 and moved on. I dutifully stared straight ahead and never saw anything but the top of his utility cover, with three stars tacked to it. To this day, I have no idea what he looks like.
Corps legend also has it that the Marine Corps fire base in Chu Lai was named after General Krulak. Sometime during his career, he had studied Chinese and because his name was so hard for his instructor to pronounce, "Krulak" became "Chu Lai" as his personal class name and that name was applied to our first fire base in Vietnam. Don't know if that's true or not, but that's what I heard long long ago.
In any event, General Krulak does an amazingly fine job of presenting Marine Corps issues from its inception up through the Vietnam War. His "insider" take on many crises faced by Marines, particularly its hardest battle to survive, not on Iwo Jima, but rather in the halls of Congress, makes this a very unique book for Marines and non-Marines alike.
My only complaints about the book are minor, but bear noting. First, on page 211 of the paperback issue, a picture is displayed showing a Marine under fire, moving out with a 3.5 inch rocket launcher round. The caption mistakenly ascribes the picture to the battle of Khe Sanh. Not so. This photo was taken in Operation Prairie in the summer of 1966. I know because I was in the battle, although not in that particular picture. Secondly, and this error I ascribe to the publishers, I'm disappointed that a book of this excellent caliber does not display the Marine Corps eagle globe and anchor anywhere on its cover. Come on, guys, get with the program!
Semper Fi.
Why's and How's, not What's.......2002-03-28
This is a not a battle memoir. Unlike many "We did this, then we did this," battle recollections, this work is a keen analysis of the US Marine Corps, its history, and America's reasons for having her.
The book starts from the premise "The U.S. doesn't need a Marine Corps," "Brute" Krulak articulates why America chooses to have one anyway. Not least among the gems of history in this book is the role Brute Krulak and others in the Chowder Society played in keeping the Marine Corps alive the last time the Executive Branch and Department of the Army conspired to kill her.

Book Description
In Kentucky, the slavery debate raged for thirty years before the Civil War began. While whites in the lower South argued that slavery was good for master and slave, many white Kentuckians maintained that because of racial prejudice, public safety, and property rights, slavery was necessary but undeniably evil.
Harold D. Tallant shows how this view bespoke a real ambivalence about the desirability of continuing slavery in Kentucky and permitted an active abolitionist movement in the state to exist alongside contented slaveholders. Though many Kentuckians were increasingly willing to defend slavery against northern opposition, they did not always see this defense as their first political priority. Tallant explores the way in which the disparity between Kentuckians' ideals and their actions helped make Kentucky a quintessential border state.

Book Description
Item response theory has become an essential component in the toolkit of every researcher in the behavioral sciences. It provides a powerful means to study individual responses to a variety of stimuli, and the methodology has been extended and developed to cover many different models of interaction. This volume presents a wide-ranging handbook to item response theory - and its applications to educational and psychological testing. It will serve as both an introduction to the subject and also as a comprehensive reference volume for practitioners and researchers. It is organized into six major sections: the nominal categories model, models for response time or multiple attempts on items, models for multiple abilities or cognitive components, nonparametric models, models for nonmonotone items, and models with special assumptions. Each chapter in the book has been written by an expert of that particular topic, and the chapters have been carefully edited to ensure that a uniform style of notation and presentation is used throughout. As a result, all researchers whose work uses item response theory will find this an indispensable companion to their work and it will be the subject's reference volume for many years to come.
Customer Reviews:
A Comprehenstive Account of Item Response Theory.......2007-05-01
The book, edited by van der Linden and Hambleton, is a comprehensive
account of Item Response Theory. The "modern" in the title of the
book is indeed reflected in new developments such as nonparametric
models and mixture models. The audience of the book is targeted
toward those who want to further develop models around Item Response
Theory. People who are more interested in applying IRT may prefer
books like Applying the Rasch Model: Fundamental Measurement in the Human Sciences.
Although the book was contributed by multiple authors, the two editors
indeed made efforts making notation consistent and the structure of
every chapter similar (Introduction, Model Description, Parameter
Estimation, Examples, References), which is very important for readers
like me who don't follow the book from cover to cover.
Gift in the field of Educational Measurement.......1999-12-15
This book is realy a gift for those persons who are working in educational Measurement.

Book Description
Nestled in the woods near Center Point, Indiana, The Exotic Feline Rescue Center houses more than 160 big catsranging from lions, tigers, leopards, and pumas, to bobcats and more obscure breeds like the caracal, serval, ocelot, and lynx. But all of the cats at EFRC have one thing in common: they are predators that have suffered abuse and escaped extermination because of EFRC's efforts.
Through astonishing images and compelling text, Stephen D. McCloud tells each cat's story. Meet Sinbad, Molly, Sierra, Montana, Tika, and others. Included with the photos in this book are background stories, anecdotes, and inside information on the personalities of feline residents at EFRC.
Stephen D. McCloud heard about the Center in a casual conversation with a friend, and decided to take his camera and visit. In the last three years, McCloud and his camera have spent hundreds of hours at the Center. He has taken the time to get to know each of the cats: their likes, their dislikes, their quirks, and their stories. The affection he has for them is clearly reflected in his photographs. It's an incredible collection, and choosing only 100 or so for the book proved a daunting task.
A portion of the proceeds from each sale of this book will be donated to The Exotic Feline Rescue Center.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Pictures...even better cause!.......2007-01-16
This is a wonderful overview of the Exotic Feline Rescue Center. Stephen McCloud has obviously fallen in love with the cats at the center and it shows. There are SO many animals that have fallen victim to the exotic pet trade...the Feline Rescue Center provides a safe haven for some of the lucky ones, that now call it home. This book provides an intimate look at some of the rescues living at the center and allows the reader to look at the cats on a more personal level. The exotic pet trade is a HUGE problem in our world today and only with the help of people like Mr. McCloud educating people through photographs and information on their plight, will more people get involved and raise the necessary funds to end the vicious cycle. Wild animals belong in the WILD, not behind bars or in canned hunts for trophies. The Exotic Feline Rescue Center provides as close to a natural environment that is able for these poor cats forced to live in captivity. Stephen McCloud does a wonderful job with stories backed up by fabulous pictures.
Fantastic book.......2006-08-30
The book does the Exotic Feline Rescue Center justice. Stephen has captured the animals through wonderful photography. My granddaughter loved the center and enjoys the book.
This book made me cry! .......2006-06-12
If you love big cats like I do this is the ultimate book. Filled with striking photographs and heart-wrenching-yet-uplifting stories, I was flooded with emotion as I read. Lots of emotions. This is not an easy read, especially when confronted with stories of people abusing these majectic animals or forcing them to travel en masse in the back of a Volkswagon van... but these lions, tigers, cheetahs, panthers and lynx have all been very fortunate to be part of this book. The photos are as beautiful as they are intimate and it's like the photographer has actually captured a tiny bit of each cat's personality. BUY THIS BOOK.
Saving Grace.......2006-05-22
The Exotic Feline Rescue Center is the saving grace to somewhere around 170 big cats (they have acquired more since the publishing of this book). This book could be a great teacher to the world (especially breeders and private owners) about the realities of sending these beautiful creatures out into the world as "pets". I have been to the compound in Center Point a number of times, and have taken a LOT of pictures, but the pictures in this book are the most beautiful ones I've seen. And the stories can be heartbreaking, too. The way some people have treated these creatures of God is appalling, as you will read in this book. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. And that tunnel ends at Center Point, Indiana in the Exotic Feline Rescue Center. I recommend you buy this book, and have your friends buy this book. Everyone will enjoy it, and hopefully learn something from it. And a portion of the proceeds will go to the EFRC, and every little bit helps.
