Book Description
Media is now a global enterprise. The reach of broadcasting and the Internet has made ignorance of the laws of far-away juristictions a real liabilty. Publishers can be sued, sometimes successfully, for violating legal standards thousands of miles away. This handbook is a nation-by-nation summary of libel and privacy law in an easy-to-use format, covering Europe, Asia, and the Americas. It is designed for rapid analysis of media law as it applies to globally accessible publications, Internet sites, and wire services. It is written by specialists for the various regions and countries and is in straigtforward language accessible to journalists and editors, as well as their lawyers, and explains different nation's definitions of responsible and ethical journalism, the risks global publishers should know prior to publication, what steps publishers should take to avoid legal conflicts, and what defenses are avaialble should they be confronted with a claim.

Good, but could use explicit guidelines.......2006-04-29
Glasser's book is an admirable compilation of the different rules in most of the major countries where reporters would want to operate. It seems to be one of the few books that unifies all the rules for all the different jurisdictions. The book highlights a series of key questions such as the definitions of libel, the abilities of companies to sue on their own behalf or to protect their products, possible restrictions on covering criminal/secret procedures and privacy rules. Drawing on the knowledge of lawyers from the different countries, Glasser organizes their expertise according to these themes.
While the book is very useful and informative, as a reporter I feel it is better reading for news executives rather than the journalists themselves. It would benefit from clear dos and don'ts -- perhaps a list for each country on a single page telling the reader exactly what specific procedures he/she should follow.
But that is a minor point. Overall, it's useful and interesting, and successfully renders complicated legal principles into a straightforward guide.
Fascinating, comprehensive, indispensible.......2006-02-14
For any journalist, lawyer or for anyone with an international point of view, this book, focusing on media law throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia is at once a handbook, a compendium, a guide, and a window into different cultures and societies, offering insight as to how each nation deals with the issues of defamation, privacy, freedom of expression, and state power.
Enormously readable, concise, cleverly organized for international comparison, this book will answer a lot of questions that may have occurred to you over the years, and it provides a kind of instant worldwide knowledge. It's required reading for the foreign correpondent, the foreign editor, and anyone else who may know someone or have an interest in worldwide journalism, Internet and broadcast media.

Still have yet to impress girls with this thing........2007-10-07
One day, I'll get one of those red LED lights and take a smitten lady out to the middle of nowhere on a new moon to lay on the grass and gaze up at the stars. With this thing, I should have at least the shadow of an idea of what I'm looking at. Why embarrass yourself, calling Cassiopeia "that big W over there"? Face it, we all know what Orion looks like. If you are going to impress someone, you need to pull out the stops and show the ladies your visual spacial "skillz" with this handy chart.
Simple to use. Necessary for beginners........2006-05-08
New to learning the skies, this has helped me greatly. Its really simple to setup and is small and sturdy enough to fit right inside my eyepiece case. A must have.
Star Chart.......2006-03-09
A helpful tool in acertaining the constellations in the night sky any time of the year. Small and compact but easy to use. A definite must have for anyone wanting to learn and know the mystery of the night sky.
Wonderful map.......2005-08-19
This is a truly helpful map of the skies for anyone interested in backyard astronomy. It is very legible, easy to see at night. I am a beginner and was able to find most of the constellations shown. Very durable as well.
Good, functional star chart.......2005-08-18
Chandler's star chart is a classic that is functional, easy-to-use, and valuable for people just learning the night sky. Its main features are its large size and lamination -- important as summer evening dew inevitably turns most paper products saggy. This is recommended for people desiring to learn their way around the night sky and build an understanding of the universe.

Epiphanius Tighe, the intrepid draconic taxonomist from A DIVERSITY OF DRAGONS, is on the trail again, hotly pursuing a Libyan specimen hell-bent on revenge in Chicago after the theft of its trove. Eppy is quickly drawn into a dangerous web of crime, graft, and deadly violence as he tracks the dragon into the abandoned freight tunnels under the Windy City, aided by his great grand-nephew Ciaran Tighe, a Jewish detective named Rasa Rapetsky, and Brennan Kirwan, a skeptical police investigator. Caught in the crossfire between police thugs, a mad professor, and the ire of a fire-breathing dragon, can Eppy save both the dragon and his new friends before disaster strikes?
Customer Reviews:
A Book for Dragon Lovers.......2006-03-12
This is a wonderful two-part invention: On one level it's a whimsical romp of a detective story pairing two of the most unlikely but loveable detectives. On another level it's a dark brooding piece with brief, insightful philosophical ponderings from the dragon's point of view asking deep questions of `what does it mean to be a dragon?' and `why search for the horde?' The main character, Eppy, is part MacGuyver, part Fox Mulder, and part Mr. Mxyzptlk. He is a draconologist who comes to the Windy City to investigate robberies at art museums, and has a theory his family and the police don't particularly fancy. He embarks on a journey that is fast-paced and fascinating, providing an overall enjoyable read dragon lovers don't want to miss. As a note of trivia, Anne McCaffrey fans will get a kick out of the prologue and epilogue in which she herself is a character in the novel playing a pivotal role in getting things rolling.
A Fun Read From Cover to Cover.......2000-12-20
"Epiphanius Tighe and the Dragon of East South Water Street" is the second book involving the wrinkled and impish dracologist, Professor Tighe, hot on the trail of a dragon, hunting for loot and food in downtown Chicago.
The characters are amusing and well-defined (especially folksy Ephiphanius in his fish out of water situation), and all the subplots all dovetail nicely. What I enjoyed especially is Wood's charming illustrations of how the descendants of Irish immigrants in the U.S., many generations removed, still cling to the notion that they're as Irish as a penny whistle. I guess it just goes to prove that Americans secretly long to belong to something older and deeper with meaning than the disposable pop culture they find themselves in.
All around a terrific read with a great protagonist. Too bad old Albert Sharpe is no longer living; he might have made a great cinematic Epiphanius Tighe! Hats off to Woods in his second Epiphanius Tighe adventure. Am looking forward to the next.
Book Description
John Keegan, whose many books, including classic histories of the two world wars, have confirmed him as the premier miltary historian of our time, here presents a masterly look at the value and limitations of intelligence in the conduct of war.
Intelligence gathering is an immensely complicated and vulnerable endeavor. And it often fails. Until the invention of the telegraph and radio, information often traveled no faster than a horse could ride, yet intelligence helped defeat Napoleon. In the twentieth century, photo analysts didn’t recognize Germany’s V-2 rockets for what they were; on the other hand, intelligence helped lead to victory over the Japanese at Midway. In
Intelligence in War, John Keegan illustrates that only when paired with force has military intelligence been an effective tool, as it may one day be in besting al-Qaeda.
Customer Reviews:
Military Intel.......2007-01-10
Excellent book. Well written and researched. The author uses specific examples from history. The book is easy to read and interesting.
A wonderful book.......2006-10-31
This enlightening military history analyzes a series of battles to see how important intelligence is in war. Keegan's assertion is that intelligence is important but fighting ability and other factors are perhaps more so. Without intelligence one is sure to lose probably but even with it one may lose. He cites examples. The first two are naval, Nelson searching for the French fleet in the mediteranean in 1798, and finally finding and destroying it but too late. Von Spee's crusier squadon in the Great War in the Pacific defeats the British and then is destroyed. At the battle of Crete the British had intelligence and still lost. At the battle of Midway intelligence may have saved the day but not at Pearl Harbor. These are only some examples. The set piece narrative is engrossing and a wonderful read and the question of intelligence is almost lost in the background as one is drawn in to these great conflicts of old.
A great read.
Seth J. Frantzman
Intelligence is necessary but not sufficient for victory.......2006-09-16
John Keegan's central theme in Intelligence in War is that battles are not won by superior intelligence; they are won by the application of superior force of arms and all that it entails: quantity and quality of forces, leadership, strategy, tactics, and just plain luck. I believe that Keegan undervalues intelligence throughout much of the book. However, I think that he does so only to make and emphasize his point. I draw this conclusion from his acknowledgement in the last chapter that "Intelligence may be usually necessary but is not a sufficient condition for victory."
This quibble aside, Intelligence in War was an interesting and readable presentation of seven detailed case studies designed to demonstrate Keegan's point. In these case studies, Keegan makes the following points:
1. Nelson was limited by the intelligence technology of his time: The only means of locating Napoleon's fleet was direct visual observation. Once the fleet was sighted, the intelligence could only be communicated to Nelson by courier traveling at about the same speeds as Nelson and Napoleon.
2. In the Valley Campaign, Stonewall Jackson made decisive use of his superior knowledge of the geography of the Shenandoah Valley in holding multiple Union armies at bay, preventing them from reinforcing McClellan's army at Richmond.
3. In WWI, wireless communications provided partial solutions to Nelson's difficulties in detecting Napoleon's fleet and reporting the information in a timely manner. However, the use of wireless for communications between fleets provided the enemy with a means of locating them and led to the development of such tactics as maintaining radio silence and transmitting misleading signals.
4. The plans for the airborne German invasion of Crete in WWII were known to the defending British commander. However, no major over-water invasion had ever been accomplished without a strong naval/amphibious force. Consequently, the British commander held his numerically superior forces in reserve to counter the seaborne threat until the Germans had seized control of the air base that was their initial objective. With control of the air base, they could land sufficient forces to win the battle.
5. In the Battle of Midway, the US obtained an intelligence advantage by breaking the Japanese naval codes and discovering that a major Japanese offensive was imminent. However, the decoded messages did not clearly specify the Japanese objective. The US forces on Midway were instructed to transmit a clear-text message that they were running out of water; when the Japanese coded messages reported that the target was short of water, their intentions became clear. Nevertheless, the Battle of Midway was a close run affair; the first five attacks by US carrier aircraft were decisively defeated. The sixth, and last, attack succeeded mostly by luck.
6. In the early phases of the Battle of the Atlantic, both sides had broken their opponent's naval codes. By 1943, the British had implemented a new, more secure code which the Germans failed to break. Denying this intelligence to the German U-boats was one factor in the Allies victory in the Atlantic. Others included persuading the Americans to adopt convoy tactics, the use of long-range aircraft to detect and attack German U-boats, the development of mini-carriers that provided air cover for the Allied convoys.
7. The detection and identification of the German V-1 and V-2 development programs was among the first instances where multiple intelligence sources came into play: aerial photography, signal interception, code breaking, and human sources all contributed. Despite the use of these multiple sources, the threat was underestimated by differences of opinion in the British scientific community and confused by the combination of intelligence on two different programs. In the end, the German V-threat was overcome when Allied invasion forces seized control of the launch sites after DDay.
Intelligence in War is well worth reading, especially if one believes, as I do, that Keegan is pointing out the limitations of intelligence, not suggesting that there is little of no value to be gained form intelligence.
Very Good, but not comprehensive........2006-02-16
Sir John Keegan is the premiere military historian writing today and this book is yet another in his collection of fine works. I would have given it 5 stars had it been a bit more comprehensive. It is a collection of case studies aimed at the theme that while military intelligence is very important, superior intelligence does not guarantee victory. This is a great book for anyone interested in military history and a very useful one for anyone interested in understanding the current military situation. This is a well-written and very important book. I highly recommend it. Professor Keegan has a newer book with a similar title that I have not read yet.
The first case study is that of Nelson chasing Napoleon in his campaign in Egypt. This is a case where good intelligence was not available, but nonetheless Nelson was finally able to bring the French fleet to battle and win a great victory.
The second study is that of General Lee in the Shenandoah Valley in the American Civil war. Here Lee's superior intelligence and knowledge of the terrain was put to great advantage. This points out the second great lesson of the book: to be valuable, military intelligence must be used properly. In the hands of a great general like Lee it was invaluable.
I will not go into all of the chapters but would like to cite two other examples where the book runs counter to the general view of the overriding importance of military intelligence. The battle of Midway is generally cited as showing the premiere value of military intelligence. To be sure, the breaking of the Japanese naval code was of critical importance, but luck and intuition also played a great role. The American Navy knew of the Japanese objective and where they were headed, but they did not know the exact location of the Japanese fleet. It was only the determination and skill of a navy Catalina (a reconnaissance aircraft) pilot, operating at the extreme extent of his range, that gave the critical information about the location of the Japanese fleet. Without this, Midway might have been a great Japanese victory, changing the course of the Second World War.
The final case study is that of the breaking of the German Enigma machine. This is another example of where the common view of history gives too much credit to the importance of the breaking of this code. The breaking of the Enigma machine code was indeed very important and critical in many areas. However, Keegan points out that there were many variations in the code machines and how they were used, making the ability to read the codes quite a bit more variable than is generally known. More importantly, Keegan points out that there were many times when, due to changes in the code or how the code was operated, the Allies were blind to Germany's intentions. Furthermore, to safeguard the fact that the code had been broken required great care in the use of the knowledge gained, often requiring ignoring the information that was gathered.
Perhaps the best summary of the point of this book can be taken from the last paragraph of the book. "Foreknowledge is no protection against disaster. Even real-time intelligence is never real enough. Only force finally counts." Current events in the wars against terrorism show how important this is and how critical it is not to place too much blind faith in the importance of intelligence, at the expense of being able to apply enough force. Intelligence is very important and can speed up victory, but it cannot in and of itself guarantee victory.
A very important book.......2006-02-14
This line from his book says a lot "Intelligence is necessary but not sufficient means to victory. Willpower counts for more." The need for a will to fight for a nation or army is absolute. The United States did not lose in Vietnam because are intelligence was good or bad, we lost because we lost the will to continue fighting. John Keegan goes on to outline what intelligence can do, reduce the price, identify weakness, reveal defects, give warning, unveil treachery, disclose enemy strategy or unlock the world. But it is "...one factor among many". Current intelligence is over estimated he says because, espionage and counter espionage are being confused with operational intelligence and operational intelligence is being confused with subversion (i.e. covert operations). Mr. Keegan is saying the "Information Dominance" Emperor has no clothes and all the lackeys rush to the Emperor's defense!

Confederate cavalry leader John Mosby is among the most romantic characters in the Civil War, and with good reason. From 1863 to the end of the conflict, Mosby's raiders were a constant headache for the North. Although more than 1,000 men served under Mosby, they usually acted in small detachments of several dozen, sacking supply depots, attacking railroads, and harassing federal troops. They seemed to move behind enemy lines almost at will, and in what is perhaps their most celebrated exploit, a handful of them led by Mosby himself rode into Fairfax Station, Virginia, in the dead of the night and kidnapped a Union general. When they were not on missions, Mosby's riders simply melted into the countryside, finding safe haven in the homes of sympathetic civilians. Theirs was a guerilla war. The frustrated North eventually assigned a special contingent of cavalry to combat them, and a price was ultimately put on Mosby's head. Nobody reined him in, however, and his command enjoyed the proud distinction of never having formally surrendered to the bluecoats. Shortly after Appomattox, Mosby simply disbanded his unit. This is another fine book from the prolific Civil War historian Jeffry D. Wert, who hardly could have picked a more intriguing subject. --John J. Miller
Customer Reviews:
Best of Mosby.......2006-12-27
Jeffry Wert's book on John Mosby's adventures reads like a great novel. It carries the action along while fleshing out the main characters, and gives vivid discriptions of the places of "Mosby Confederacy." Just an outstanding effort and Wert is to be praised. I have read all of the books on Mosby and while the others are good, this one was the most entertaining. It is well researched (as are all of Wert's books), and the author does excellent job of describing the events that brought home the Civl War to the people of Loudoun and Fauquier counties in Virginia.
Fair and Balanced.......2006-10-06
Jeffry Wert came to his subject about as objectively as is possible in such matters. He was not afraid to point out Mosby's weaknesses - and he had them - but neither was he afraid to trumpet his strengths which were considerably more numerous and important than his weaknesses.
John Mosby - in Wert's own words - was the 'most lethal man' about whom the author had ever written and yet, Mosby's 'lethality' is not that of other 'notorious guerrillas and bushwhackers' who fought for the Confederacy, men like Quantrill, Anderson and Ferguson. Rather, his was constrained, premeditated and intellectual in nature; Mosby was no bestial monster who killed in the red rage of sectional hatred. As long as Union soldiers were fighting against him, Mosby - and his men - did not hesitate to kill - and they did it very well indeed! However, once a soldier or a command had surrendered, he immediately embraced that behavior considered honorable in wartime - so much so, in fact, that some of his best friends after the war were officers whom he had captured. Only in two instances did Mosby fight 'under the black flag' - that is, with no prisoners being taken. The first involved the understanding by Mosby's command that they were to kill all troops involved in the destruction of civilian property. The second occurred when Mosby was forced (very much against his will) to engage in retaliation for the hanging and shooting of six of his men at Front Royal and the later hanging of another of his men who had been captured. Mosby believed that unless he responded in kind ('measure for measure' as he himself said) his men would be treated as outlaws and not soldiers when captured. Interestingly enough, in the latter instance, Mosby made sure to get permission to retaliate by going up through the chain of command, requesting the 'blessing' of both Lee and Secretary of War Seddon - which he got. He also chose by lot seven men under Custer and Lowell, the commands that had been responsible for the lynching and shooting of his men.
Wert gives us a 'fair and balanced' picture of the man who became the 'patron saint' of today's Special Forces, a man so far ahead of his time strategically that he was often considered a thief and an outlaw by his own side and whose impact on the war was far greater than the size of his command or the limited area in which he fought would indicate. At the same time, however, Wert does not make Mosby into some legendary figure who could have single-handedly rescued the Confederacy if only things had been just slightly different. And yet, it is well to remember that it was Robert E. Lee who, upon hearing of one of Mosby's earliest exploits said, 'Hurrah for Mosby! I wish I had a hundred of him!' Who knows what Lee could have done had he the services of a hundred men with the vision, acumen and intellect of John Singleton Mosby!
Good at the end.......2006-02-17
I have to be honest, I almost put the book down half way through. But I gave the author the benefit of the doubt and kept on reading.
I couldn't figure out why Mosby was so "glorified" as a great leader reading this book. Basically all the author described was taking prisoners and stealing horses.
After I read to the last 1/3 of the book the action picks up. Now I know why Mosby is so highly regarded in the "Confederacy".
It turned out to be a good read, and one has to admire the leadership and courage of Mosby, Chapman, Richards, and all his men.
Colorless........2004-03-09
This is not a biography of John Singleton Mosby but rather an analysis of the men under his command. The writer does a fair job outlining Mosby's operations in Northern Virginia, primarily Loudoun, Fairfax and Fauquier counties, so from that point of view it appears well researched. But Wert's prose is flat and somewhat boring. As a result, this is a very difficult book to get into. Better maps might have helped.
A Great Effort.......2004-01-07
I love books about Mosby especially since I grew up in Prince William County Virginia, this is and was an area that in the civil war was known as Mosby's Confederacy because of the help the commander of the guerrilla unit had from the locals and the fact that one ths one unit almost single-handedly kept this part of Virginia in Confederate hands throughout the war.
Two points
One-More accurately it is a story about the UNIT with an emphasize on Mosby and while there are some elements that could be considered part of a biography on John Mosby that's not the whole purpose of this book. So if you are looking for a biography there are probably better books you could pick.
Two-While I loved the book I can certainly see where some others may have a problem, it suffers from a big problem in some historical accounts of all times, namely it is dry and at times it rambles. That's fine by me I like blow-by-blow accounts of operations and battles but someone who is looking for something different might want to try something else.
Overall-This book is sort of a like it or hate it book. I happen to like it.

Book Description
Ride with the Gray Ghost of the Confederacy in Mosby and His Rangers as a small group of guerilla fighters keep thousands of Union troops tied up defending Washington. Presenting the excitement of the raids in the words of the Rangers, the book then carefully puts their controversial tactics within the larger perspective of the resulting Union punishment of civilians.
Customer Reviews:
An Informative Book.......2002-03-21
Though written for young readers, there are few better accounts of John Singleton Mosby and his Confederate partisans than "Mosby and his Rangers." Beller provides a detailed account of Mosby's life, from his birth in Edgemont, Virginia to his death many years later. Not only does she create a prefect picture of Mosby's career, but honors his partisan rangers and shows his effect on them.
The book describes many of Mosby's succesful raids, including one where he snuck into a Union camp and kidanpped Brigadier General Edwin Henry Stoughton without any of his rangers being caught.
This book was very well written for the audience it was intended for. Informative and descriptive, "Mosby and his Rangers" is a perfect biography of one of the most effective military leaders of the Civil War.
It was incredible.......2000-12-06
I particularly like this book because of the use of words! I felt like i was really there with the gray ghost as he went about his mischevious adventures! If I were you, I'd buy it!
