Really, it's a compendium of fun facts about horrors arranged in bite-size prose bits and written under the influence of lead author Dunnigan's favorite book, Will Cuppy's irreverent historical classic The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody. The minichapters have titles like "Killer Vegetables and the Farts from Hell" (at 20,000 feet, gas caused by eating cabbages expanded, killing airmen). Did you know that every single German spy who infiltrated England became an Allied double agent? That MacArthur, Churchill, and Roosevelt all descended from one Sarah Belcher of Taunton, Massachusetts? That World War II killed about 100 million, or five percent of humanity? That a Russian was 100 times likelier to die than an American? (A USSR boy born in 1923 had an eighty-percent chance of dying by 1945.) We learn the origin of the term "rock & roll" (all weapons firing on automatic), the superiority or stupidity of tracer bullets, Göring's air-war policy, and U.S. troop-replacement policy. This book is best suited for the history buff, as it contains pages (and pages, and pages, and pages) of world war 2 trivia. Unfortunately, the so called "Dirty Little Secrets" are few and far between. The lay reader will lose interest as the signal-to-noise ratio for the non-afficianado is just too low.

I am glad to see that the Greatest Generation had as many mistakes and foul ups as we do today. I found this book fascinating and addictive.

Trivia you thought you knew.......2004-02-06

This book is excellent for those who want to supplement their knowledge of World War II with real human stories and analysis of why the war went the way it did.

The way it's written, it can be read at the pace you choose. It's divided into small anecdotes, and can be an excellent bathroom reader.

Lots of Research Poorly Written.......2003-12-11

I really enjoyed the book and I think a great deal of time went into its research; however, I think it was a bit substandard in form. Much to much attention is spent on conveying meaningless statistics. Moreover, there are a number of grammatical errors, especially dangling prepositions.

The factor that removed it from the four star range for me, was the inherent conflict with the following:
On page 330 the authors write: "While it is widely known that the submarine was crucial in destroying Japan's merchant marine during the Pacific war, it [is] often overlooked that U.S. subs sank only 45 percent of enemy merchant shipping. Aircraft accounted for most of the rest."

However, on page 338 our authors state: "The decisive weapon in the war against Japan was the submarine." The Authors then present a table showing that submarines accounted for 55% of Japanese merchant shipping loss while aircraft only account for 33%.

These assertions of fact cannot coexist. Which is true?! I shall always wonder.

Entertaining collection of odd WWII facts.......2003-03-26

The US army actually had more ships than the US navy? Polish cavalry never actually fought German tanks? These and other tidbits of historical trivia are compiled in this book. Ranging from odd facts such as the number of inkstamps used by Nazi Germany to the debunking of popular myth like the supposed failure of the Maginot Line, this tome is a good addition for the library of any WWII buff.

This book feels like two separate books. The first 1/4 of the book describes bits and pieces of Genesis, Deuteronomy and Tractate Avodah Zarah in the Mishna and Talmud.

This part of the book was quite interesting; Eisen emphasizes how Genesis foreshadows the Diaspora, in that the Jews (or more accurately proto-Jews) are always landless, always forced to curry favor with the ruling power in order to survive, even when they are wealthy - just like their Diaspora descendants. (Of course, the story of Sodom indicates that even land-owning idol-worshippers are not protected from Divine displeasure).

He also explains how Deuteronomy, by setting up a blueprint for a model society in Israel, creates an almost utopian vision.

Avodah Zarah, by contrast, deals with a dystopian reality- a situation where Jews cannot rule themselves even in their own homeland, and thus must compromise with idolatry.

The last 3/4 of the book discusses the reactions of various Jewish intellectuals to Zionism- often intellectuals long dead and forgotten to all but the most knowledgeable. I found this part of the book to be boring and lifeless by comparison to Eisen's chapter-length dvar torahs. A brief summary: the state of Israel presents a challenge to Diaspora Jews, but also presents an intellectual change to Israeli Jews. Secular Zionism is intellectually vapid because its primary goal (a Jewish state) has been achieved, and it was not built to answer the question of what to do with a Jewish state after its creation. On the other hand, Religious Zionism has difficulty with the contact of a Jewish state that is not governed by Jewish law at all.

Fine writing and a deep understanding.......2007-03-30

Bernstein is the author of a good many books and a good many scientific profiles for the New Yorker, a literary form that he claims to have invented. I'm not sure that I'd completely accept that- Berton Rouche's "Annals of Medicine" series for that magazine seem to have predated him- but that aside, Bernstein is still one of the best popular science writers around. He is a master of the New Yorker style, having been trained by that magazine's great editor William Shawn.

Bernstein also has a deep understanding of modern science missing from some of the modern writers of popular accounts, and he lets the story tell itself, rather than taking the lazy route of adding stylistic affectations to add interest to a poorly told story. His profiles of some of the greatest physicists of the modern era, like Mach, Bohr and Schroedinger, really clarify for the lay reader what it was about the accomplishments of these men that gave them their place in history.

a superb mix of articles, well written and accurate........2001-08-31

Bernstein is one of that small set of people who are both scientists and have written for the New Yorker. This books is a collection of essays on scientists. In addition to to more 'regular' ones about Bohr, Einstein, Mach and Turing, there are stories about Edwin Land and Sonya Kowalewsky. The tale of how Tom Lehrer, Harvard math graduate student, actually got his songs to market caught me by surprise. And I had no idea Primo Levi had been in a concentration camp.

This book's focus is more on the people who make science than the actual science itself. It is not a flippant biography or collection of anecdotes by any means, but a solid (well --- as solid as you can be in twenty pages per person) well balanced description of various scientists. The author's science/writing experience allows him to avoid being condescending, bloated or abstruse. More than mere journalism, this book gives a real flavor of the lives of scientists.
