A Solid Effort!.......2001-04-25

Lorraine Spurge presents a series of tips, primarily directed to novices in the business or work world, on how to make money, save it and invest it. Her section on making money deals with finding a job you like, creating a family budget and buying a house. She discusses banking basics, different investments, kids' financial training, the stock market, taxes and long-term planning. Given the writing style and the focus on the family and kids, the book seems to be primarily directed toward women who are just starting their businesses or who hold entry-level jobs. Spurge's book will seem too basic to those who were not financially born yesterday. Many of the suggestions will seem obvious or repetitive of other manuals, like career-planning books such as What Color is Your Parachute. However, if you are newly hatched and blinking wide-eyed at the bright world of financial self-sufficiency, we [...] have just the book for you.

I was given this book as a graduation gift by someone who had bought it but couldn't plod through it. I can see why. It's poorly written and there's no usable information inside. Plus it's boring. So in the interest of accuracy I would rename it "365 Ways To Waste Your Time And Money."

Well, a book serves as a summary of optical systems intro.
Formulas pop up without derivations, some chapters are just a few pages long. Published 7 years ago, some pictures are hard to see the details or even the sketch..

This is the exact book i needed. It is an excellent summary of optical principles, and their utilization in optical systems. The design examples are great for illustrating the underlying principles. The level is great for professionals (as a review), or for anyone wanting to learn the principles of optics design. I highly recommend this book, there are lots of references for deeper study. This would be an excellent textbook for a class in optical design.

Practical words of wisdom for optics.......2000-09-28

Fischer gives me good advice that I can look up in a book. For example, I found answers about diffraction efficiency in diffractive optics, and a lens design case study about digital camera lenses. I also enjoyed the bloopers section. This information will help me do my job.

First step into the art of optical design.......2006-06-07

This book is a good introduction to the art of optical design. It is an excellent first read for any student who wants to learn practical optics, avoiding heavy math and focusing mainly on real-life examples following simple reasoning backed up with essential formulas and calculations, which illustrate how to derive a preliminary design, before starting any optimisation with some optical software. Nowadays anyone could do optical design using powerful package like OSLO, Zemax or Code V, it is so easy to ask the program to find a solution for you, but without understanding the basic principles, it is just an illusion that one can really design an optical system.

If one really wants to invest time into optical design, at least they should cover fundamentals, and this book gives this foundation in a concise and comprehensive form (200 pages book is not a formidable brick). In terms of practical use, it is similar to Donald C. O'Shea's book "Elements of Modern Optical Design", which also contains a lot of sample calculations, yet examples given in both books are very different. "Elements of Modern Optical Design" covers more about exact ray traces and third order aberrations (which can be done with the use of an optical software), whereas "Practical Optical System Layout" covers mainly paraxial calculations and focuses on optical elements and their combinations to reduce particular type of aberrations. A deeper treatment of aberration theory can be found in "Modern Optical Engineering" book by the same author, and in particular for lens design in his outstanding, but more advanced book "Modern Lens Design". Of course one may read introductions in Mellesgriot catalogue about different optical elements and their usage, but to get a systematic coverage of various concepts for optical design, this book is a good start.

This book is not complete enough for what it claims to be. A full time lens designer might find it useful as another opinion though.

A sort of back to the future II.......2003-10-17

The book title is quite interesting: PRACTICAL OPTICAL SYSTEM LAYOUT AND USE OF STOCK LENSES? Did we get what that announces? Unfortunately NO.

It seem than that book is not enough different or even not a complement to be read before, at the same time or after the first Warren J. Smith book ¡°Modern Optical Engineering¡±.

I was quite interested by the last chapter: Getting the Most: Out of ¡®Stock¡¯ Lenses. But I did not find a little number of graph advice or what ever extra stuff than present in the first Smith¡¯s book.

Without comparing page per page PRACTICAL OPTICAL SYSTEM LAYOUT is a sort of ¡°Modern Optical Engineering¡± without substance. I sincerely don¡¯t see what sorts of professional who have advantage to read that. Maybe some college Biology teacher? But I don¡¯t think so.

PRACTICAL OPTICAL SYSTEM LAYOUT seem to be half the way between a equation book like Schaum¡¯s and what ever you find at the beginning of any optic manufacturer catalogue (like Linos, Mellesgriot and Edmund who you get free by post or by the net).

Let¡¯s proof what I said with some example. First of all: if find a mistake at page 168 for the shape factor (k=c1/c1-c1) obviously without sense (but that proof nothing). Second like during all my science education in Smith¡¯s throw away lot of difficult concept without giving you some order what is the most important, what that concept mean! What is MTF, what is Coma, why we can¡¯t use first order optic to design what ever you want. Such simple question need a lot of word, lot of phrase, a lot of paragraph, a lot of example, a lot of graph and a lot of pages.

In conclusion, this ouvrage is for me a big deception. And author fail to teach you the ¡°first cut¡± of optical design.

Get the new Edition.......2007-08-03

Amelia is on the money with her review.
Published in 1987, this book precedes 20 years of corrections and revisions. In 2006, Frank Almeda, Wilma Follette and Catherine Best released a revised edition from the California Academy of Sciences. Skip the edition reviewed here and get the most recent version, it is an essential reference for Marin Natural History.

Essential Reference for Marin Naturalists.......2005-05-18

This book is actually quite outdated as far as nomenclature goes and also does not give much detail about the species beyond that in the key. It has no pictures and is not for the casual wildflower enthusiast. It does have one great benefit, however, which is extremely detailed information about where and in what habitat a particular species may be found. This info is ectremely helpful in narrowing down plant i.d.s and determining the likelihood of a particular species occuring in your area.

In the 1960s, it was believed that no more than about 4,000 orang-utans remained in the wild. Consequently, IUCN - The World Conservation Union - declared the ape an endangered species, demanding its world-wide protection. Nevertheless, the orang-utan today faces extinction because it is dependent on a rain-forest habitat that is rapidly being demolished due to human greed, and a growing human population.
Rijksen was among the first to make a detailed study of the ape in the wild, emerging as an authority on orang-utan conservation. In the late 1980s he became so alarmed by local rumours of the rapid decline of wild orang-utans that he initiated the study leading to this book. Meijaard conducted the ambitious, island-spanning surveys in Borneo and Sumatra to reveal the ape's whereabouts.
This is the story of their findings. It is the first comprehensive study of the ape's distribution and status based on a wealth of first-hand field data, and a frank, disturbing account of a mixture of good intentions, ignorance and greed, spelling doom for our Asian relative.
Nevertheless, the authors emphasise that the orang-utan can survive. A realistic plan to save the ape, and with it thousands of unique wild animals and plants, does exist. It is the authors' hope that Our Vanishing Relative, so urgent and eloquent in its description of the deadly net of problems descending over our helpless relative, will awaken attention and empathy in order to safeguard the future of the orang-utan.

Seeing its forbidding price here I realize how lucky I was to pick up an Indonesian edition for just a few dollars...
An extremely throughly written book dealing with all imaginable aspects of orangutan conservation, pulling no punches when pointing out mistakes made by conservationists so far.
I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone seriously interested in the survival of these apes.
If you have already read more popular books like Birute Galdikas' "Reflections of Eden" or Linda Spalding's "A Dark Place in the Jungle" and are left wishing for more balanced, serious information you could find nothing better than this one.
Pity for the price!
