Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical that is becoming increasingly fashionable as an oxidant, both in industry and in academia and whose production is expected to increase significantly in the next few years. This growth in interest is largely due to environmental considerations related to the clean nature of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant, its by-product being only water.
To date this chemical has largely been employed as a non-selective oxidant in operations like the bleaching of paper, cellulose and textiles, or in the formulation of detergents, and only to a minimal extent in the manufacture of organic chemicals.

The general information concerning organic peroxide classifications, the methods of their synthesis is given. The properties of peroxide bond are briefly considered. The structure of organic peroxides is analyzed in detail. The features of NMR spectroscopy as well as vibration spectroscopy of peroxides of a various structure are considered. Experimental data on thermal decomposition of organic peroxides in the gas phase and in solution are generalized. The influence of high pressure and cage effect on thermal decomposition of peroxides is described. Further, the acid-catalyzed reaction of decomposition, synthesis and transformations of organic peroxides are considered.

The theoretical approaches to determination of thermodynamic properties of organic peroxides are considered. In the appendix kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the representative set of peroxides are described and the areas of their application are specified. The examples of synthesis of the large set of organic peroxides are given.

This monograph presents a new theory and methods of solving inverse Stefan problems for quasilinear parabolic equations in domains with free boundaries. This new approach to the theory of ill-posed problems is useful for the modelling of nonlinear processes with phase transforms in thermophysics and mechanics of continuous media.
Regularisation methods and algorithms are developed for the numerical solution of inverse Stefan problems ensuring substantial savings in computational costs. Results of calculations for important applications in a continuous casting and for the treatment of materials using laser technology are also given.

Unusual Travelogue.......2006-07-05

If Kaplan's previous novel "At The Arms" was structurally similar to "The Thousand and One Nights," this novel is more like "Gulliver's Travels" or perhaps "The Wizard of Oz." It's the story of a man who survives a plane crash, lands in the middle of nowhere, falls in love, and tries to find his way back home with his new love. The bulk of the novel is a detailed account of the cultures he encounters and the misadventures he faces along the way.

What "Vacationing with Jel" shares with "At The Arms" is the deadpan first-person narrative that ties together the many stories and sub-narratives. "Vacationing with Jel" is basically a mechanism for Kaplan to veer off on any tangent he feels like -- whether it's about architecture, mythology, linguistics, anthropology, sex, or anything else -- but his diversions are fun to read and they're woven seamlessly into the narrative, which makes this a very enjoyable book.

"At The Arms" seemed to deliberately avoid any sort of character development, since the stories were told from the point of view of a somewhat solipsistic narrator. In "Vacationing with Jel" there's more character development, although none of it is very explicit, and the focus is still more on the stories than the characters who populate them.

I liked this book, and when he publishes something else, I'll probably read it. (According to his website, he's getting ready to publish his next novel.) He's fun to read, although he's probably not for everyone. As a matter of fact, he seems to go out of his way to make sure that not everyone enjoys his books. Why else, for example, in what is basically a love story with comic twists, would he describe the loneliness and alienation of being imprisoned in solitary confinement, never knowing when one day ends and another begins?

Like I said, he's not for everybody, but those who appreciate this sort of fiction will find "Vacationing with Jel" a very satisfying book.

Should Be Called "The Archaeology of Swords" & not Weapons.......2007-06-19

I bought this mainly for what I could learn about fighting axes. What I got was a description of 3 vague axe types without any new (or much old)information about them. Thats not much in 330pp. I was disappointed from the second I opened it and leafed through it. Obviously there were a great many axes used in these times periods yet you wouldn't think so reading this book. The 95% of this is on swords. If you were interested in much of anything else from that time period, forget it. If swords are your thing this is for you.

This is a very informative book, written clearly and delightfully free of arcane references. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because most of the illustrations are drawings rather than photographs. The drawings are good though. This is a good reference book for dating the styles and innovations of edged weapons up through the end of the 15th century--Particularly for a collector.

A compelling read.......2006-11-08

This book goes beyond the history and developement of the sword and related weapons. It deals with early European history as it relates to weaponry and fighting techniques and back the claims with archeological findings. Oakeshott also discusses the old sagas and other historical lore, supported by archeology, to illustrate the culture of the sword and the peoples who used these weapons. I find it hard to just finish the chapter that I am on and get about with the day's work. A truely compelling read for those interested in anchient weaponry.

Highly readable and yet extremely informative.......2006-04-25

This fascinating book is the magnum opus of author and sword-expert Ewart Oakeshott (1916-2002). In it, the author traces the evolution of European (and only European) arms from prehistory to the fifteenth century. He shows how weapons changed in shape and composition, sometimes due to changes in technology (for example in the change from bronze to iron) and sometimes due to changes in society (for example in the development of chivalry).

Overall, I found this to be a highly readable, and yet extremely informative book. The author does a great job of explaining the evolution of weapons in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. I enjoyed the many picture and illustrations that are peppered throughout the book, finding them very useful for understanding the text.

Now, as you might expect with a book by a sword-expert, this book focuses primarily on the development of the sword, but as the sword has usually been considered the king of the pre-gunpowder battlefield, this is not a great surprise. So, let me just say that this is a great book for understanding European weapons of any era, and of the evolution of the weapons in general. I think that this is a great book on ancient and medieval weapons, one that I would not hesitate to recommend to all readers.

A must have.......2005-09-21

This is a simple walktrough the age of blade weapons. Easy understood, good illustrations and serious written. It's not a boring learning book, but it is helpfull. Either you are a reenacter or an archeology student. Buy it!

Oakeshott presents, in very readable form, not only a wealth of information concerning European arms and armor through the ages, but excellent historical overveiws of the periods discussed which include the best 'nutshell' history of the Migration Era and Viking era that it has ever been my pleasure to read. Any serious student of arms and armor must read this book. The author's style of writing is unusually engaging and informative, and much more readable than the normal run of dry English historical books. He has the ability to bring history alive in your heart, as it so obviously is alive for him.
