4 out of 5 stars CSULA student taking his auditing class.......2006-04-23

I am currently taking an auditing class (ACCT 424B) with Dr. Hayes (the main author) as the professor. The nature of this book is international, yet it is completely relevant to American standards, including recent developments such as Sarbannes-Oxley. The exercises are very helpful in making you think about the concepts presented. Examples of CPA exam questions are interspersed throughout the book. Illustrations (including sample documents) are clear and understandable. The accompanying web site also includes multiple choice questions for each chapter. Given that this is not published in the U.S., it is a good value, considering what I've paid for other accounting textbooks. As for Dr. Hayes, he's a good teacher who keeps us up to date.

        Book Description

With a Foreword by the South African Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, Kader Asmal.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), established in South Africa after the collapse of apartheid, was the bold creation of a people committed to the task of rebuilding of a nation and establishing a society founded upon justice, equality and respect for the rule of law. As part of its historic, cathartic, mission, the TRC held a special hearing, calling to account the lawyers - judges, academics and members of the bar -who had been crucial participants in the apartheid legal order. This book is an account of those hearings, and an attempt to evaluate, in the light of theories of adjudication, the historical role of the judiciary and bar in the apartheid years.

This book offers us the spectacle of an entire legal system on trial. The echoes from this process are captured here in a way which will appeal to all readers, lawyers and non-lawyers alike, interested in the relationship between law and justice, as it is exposed during a period of transition to democracy.

              Book Description

Foam Extrusion: Principles and Practice combines the science of foam with the engineering of extrusion processes in one comprehensive volume, joining scientific principles and engineering practice. Starting with the fundamentals and then moving to phase separation, the text lays the scientific foundation in such a manner that the microscopic transition from a nucleus to a void (nucleation) and macroscopic movement from a void to an object (formation) are plausibly addressed. The last section of the book presents interesting foam extrusion developments, demonstrating how scientific findings can be applied to the engineering field, from principles to batch experimentation and continuous foaming. Each chapter concludes with a section of references for further study, and most include a nomenclature section and/or summary section as well. Drawing from the experience of the editor and the authors, Foam Extrusion: Principles and Practice captures the interesting evolution of foam extrusion, and offers a solid foundation for future developments. It is an informative guide for anyone involved with this field.

First published in 1971 and set in the middle England of the 1960s, A Melon for Ecstasy takes the frustrated passion of one repressed young man and shows that sex in the suburbs can be a very twisted affair.

                    4 out of 5 stars Love Hurts!.......2002-12-28

Even hardcore readers will scratch their heads in wonderment at the sheer audacity of "A Melon for Ecstasy." It is like nothing else floating around out there. Sure, there are plenty of offbeat black comedy books waiting to be found, but this book takes the cake. Written in the 1970's by two Brits, John Fortune and John Wells, "A Melon for Ecstasy" deals with a very special man and his love for the wilderness. While many of us love the countryside and all of its intimate charms, it is a safe bet to say that none of us take our affinity for nature as far as Humphrey Mackevoy, the main character of the book.

You see, dear old Humphrey has a different outlook on nature than most people. Humphrey loves trees, literally. It is the type of love that involves a drill and splinters in a very private area of the human anatomy. Climbing trees is not enough for good old Hump; he lives up to his name by making nightly excursions into the neighborhood or a nearby forest and getting to know oaks, maples, elms, and assorted other classifications of the old wood on a first name basis. Of course, whenever Humphrey rises to the occasion, he must watch carefully for his neighbors. One would not want to be caught with one's pants down when the local constabulary strolls by. Humphrey's biggest problem is not his proclivity for tree lovin'; it is the fact that the people in town are noticing his little hobby because Humphrey leaves evidence of his amorous adventures.

Fortune and Wells tell the story of Humphrey entirely through newspaper clippings, letters, and other sorts of two-way communications. This clinical detachment serves to bring out a lot of the humor in the situation. We not only see Humphrey's thoughts through his diary entries, but also the reaction of neighbors and townspeople to the rapidly increasing number of tree holes. Humphrey's activities sets off a whole chain of events, bringing in the local bird watching society, a conflict between two powerful members of the community, an oversexed teenager, and Humphrey's mother (one of the oddest birds to appear in the literary canon).

Initially, the police are dumbfounded over these seemingly random appearing holes. One inspector posits the theory that it must be an orangutan drilling the holes. The local bird watching society believes a rare woodpecker is responsible (and in a way, it is). When the town clerk begins to spray the local trees to keep the woodpecker away, he touches off a war with the entire town, especially with Alderman Strangeways. In a series of escalating confrontations, Humphrey's main squeeze is chopped down and the local beverage ends up with a rather unwelcome embellishment. Humphrey ends up going on a rampage and is caught in a compromising position. His subsequent arrest, trial, and conviction round out the book. The book does have a happy ending, although it is as strange as the rest of the story.

It is a tad difficult to read any type of deep meaning into "A Melon for Ecstasy." At times, the book is so dark as to defy description. When Humphrey spends pages of his diary discussing every type of tree and his desires for them, J.G. Ballard's "Crash" swiftly comes to mind. If "Crash" attempted to reveal a future psychology, one where men and machine became united, "A Melon for Ecstasy" outlines a primitive psychology, where man and nature seek union. Then again, maybe that is just reading too much into the whole thing. It is classified as humor and there are certainly enough chuckles in the book to merit that moniker.

"A Melon for Ecstasy" is funny, although compared to heavyweight British humorists like Jerome K. Jerome, Fortune and Wells cannot compare. Rose Hopkins, the teenager with nothing but indecent thoughts on her mind, is always worth a chortle, as is the running battle between Smart and Strangeways. Especially noteworthy is the prison chaplain who attempts to reach his less educated flock by reworking the gospel narratives into a western novel (involving Sheriff Jesus and his posse) and a science fiction novel (an even more outlandish tale beginning with "Space Hostess Mary").

You need to be in the right mood for this slim book. Even if you do not pick up much of the humor, the book is still worth reading because it is so darn weird. Be sure and pass it along to friends; not only will they think the book is strange; they will look at you in a different light, and that can only be to the good.

5 out of 5 stars Botanical Erotica - And Hilarious to Boot!.......2002-05-05

I have been waiting for over a decade to see this strange and hilarious book back in print. The bizarre situation will not be for everyone but for those who appreciate on-target satire and off-beat subject matter, this is a real find. The two authors have come up with a novel that satirizes many things but chiefly the psychological thriller and small town mores.

The plot centers on Humphrey MacKevoy, an Englishman who has uncontrolable sexual lust for trees -really! The townpeople of Mundham begin to notice strange holes being drilled into the trunks of young saplings and begin speculating what can be causing them (the chief theory is a rare species of woodpecker which brings the birders out in force when the town council wants to use bird-repellent to get rid of it).

One of the delights of the book is the method used by the authors to tell the story. There are newpaper articles from the local town paper, minutes from the bird society , pages of the police log, psychiatrist's notes and excerpts from diaries. The chief informer is Humphrey himself , who records his nightly raids on the unsuspecting trees in graphic and explicit detail (a great spoof on the porngraphic novel).

The whole tale would be shocking and tasteless if it were not in the hands of these two clever writers. The bumbling efforts of the locals to discover what is going on, contrasted with the mind-boggling descriptions of Humphrey's conquests, make for a truely funny ride.

You'll be reading passages out loud to whomever is nearby and, when finished, you'll start making a list of the friends who should get copies.

                      Book Description

Two hundred and eighty-two ships, some of them the largest and most powerful ever built...nearly 200,000 men, many sent to the bottom of the sea...a cast of characters that included MacArthur, Roosevelt, Halsey, and Nimitz...more than 100,000 square miles of fire and blood...they all came together in one unique battle, the singular turning point in the tide of WWII and in the history of warfare. Now, using materials previously unavailable, award-winning author Thomas J. Cutler captures the awe-inspiring heroism, the flawed strategies, the brilliant deception, and the brutal reality of the greatest naval battle of all time. From seaman to admiral, from aerial to surface to submarine combat, every facet, every weapon, every controversy -- on both sides of the firing line -- explodes off the page in this impressive account of the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

The book is more about the biographies of the Pacific military big wigs than it is about the Battle of Leyte Gulf. If you are looking for a first rate description of the battle itself there's no better book than The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors.

5 out of 5 stars Courage Under Fire.......2006-09-05

A moving and inspiring portrait of men most people will never know about but will always be remembered by those touched by their deeds and courage in places we don't remember much anymore. I am thankful for the sacrifice they made so I could freely write this.

My only complaint is the book is too short. A battle of this magnitude would benefit from a little more detail.

                      5 out of 5 stars History's Biggest Naval Battle...........2002-07-21

This is a superb book. I've not read (yet) "Afternoon of the Rising Sun" but I think this is the best primer on the subject ever written. It's clear, precise and you don't have to know a whole lot on the subject to read it. The chapter on the Battle Samar, "Charge of the Light Brigade," is a terrificly exciting account of Sprague's pitifully small group's collision with Kurita's Main Battle Line. Military history doesn't get any better than this. I extend my thanks to the Naval Institute Press for bringing this classic back in print.

5 out of 5 stars The Full Story of the Biggest Naval Clash.......2002-04-07

Cutler's account of the Battle of Leyte Gulf is a remarkable and detailed account of the greatest naval battle in history. What makes the book great is the details that Cutler provided for the reader to learn about what happened. The reader is given the background first of what led to the battle: the initial air strikes by Halsey, MacArthur's arguement to invade the Phillipines over Formosa, and the initial invasion. But he covers both sides as to why the Japanese committed the rest of their fleet and how the arrived at their plan.
The account of the battle is fully covered as well. From the Dace and Darter commencing the attack, to the smashing victory in Surigao Strait, Halsey's initial attacks and blunderous move north, and the herioc and desperate fight of Taffy 3 to protect themselves and the landing forces. Cutler doesn't just say wahy Halsey blundered, but he gives every reason why and what the consequences after the battle were.
Now I would be lying if I said I was totally satisfied though. I was a little disappointed in the pictures included, I have seen more in other books, but Cutler managed to get ones I have never seen before. That is minor though when compared to the satisfaction of getting the facts about the victory that guaranteed the US could win the war. The maps are helpful in seeing the Japanese plan of attack and the US plan of defense. I would recommend this to any historian or lover of war novels.

Some books have a hard time living up to their titles, but The Universe, the Eleventh Dimension, and Everything does just fine. Physicist and writer Richard Morris seeks to explain the current state of knowledge in cosmology and subatomic physics; as if that weren't enough, he goes on to give us his take on how scientists do their work. What would have been three short works in the hands of a lesser writer becomes a challenging, enlightening book that pushes readers forward from the first page. Morris's gift for explanation is a wonder--few can get across the intricate ephemera of superstring theory without losing the audience at some point, but before we know it, we've already covered the scary stuff and are on to something new.

Perhaps the most important section of the book is its last, "The Scientific Imagination." Here the author lays out his thoughts on scientific work--saying, for example, "there is no scientific method"--and shows us that research and theorizing are just as creative and playful as painting and singing. Examples from such greats as Einstein and Galileo cement his arguments and inspire the reader to see the white-coated lab technician as just another stereotypical fantasy. It may not answer the Great Questions (we're not close yet), but The Universe, the Eleventh Dimension, and Everything is a satisfying survey of what we know and how we learned it. --Rob Lightner

                                        Book Description

From the formation of the universe to a theory of matter to life on earth, Richard Morris delivers a clear and concise picture of what we know, how we know it, and what the limits to future knowledge might be.

Morris begins by discussing the various ideas about the ultimate destiny of the universe: whether it will continue expanding or eventually collapse. Next he addresses the search for a unified theory of matter that will encompass the four known forces in nature: gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear forces. Finally, Morris looks at the origin of life. Once conditions were hospitable, life evolved on Earth almost immediately. But how? This is the subject of a number of theories the book outlines.

What is the fate of the universe, and what are the implications of a unified theory of matter? The Universe, The Eleventh Dimension, And Everything provides an introduction to the scientific revolutions which have revealed new concepts and fostered new discoveries. Chapters are geared to the lay reader yet include plenty of scientific background.

                                        3 out of 5 stars Useful volume.......2000-02-11

Morris specializes in making physics understandable to those of us who are terrified by mathematical formulas.

The Universe necessarily repeats some of the material he has covered in earlier works, since it is written for those who may have only a smattering of knowledge about the vast and complex world of physics. But the repeated material can also be of help to the physics buff who hasn't completely caught up with the latest in the field.

Unfortunately, however, the book is plagued by errors. While little harm is done when "pseudoscience" comes out as "psuedoscience" or when the title of Copernicus' famous treatise on the solar system is misspelled, other mistakes are serious. For someone who is trying to learn more about the mysterious world of physics, a photon mistakenly labeled as an electron or the substitution of 1033 for 1033 will leave the less knowledgeable reader utterly confused.

That being said, Morris provides a considerable service with this small volume. His is a lucid explanation of just how science in general, and physics in particular, works. And a step-by-step explanation of what we know today in physics and what is still speculative is a truly important contribution to the interested public's understanding of that science. The section on The Scientific Imagination alone is worth the price of the book.
