Excellent, New Approach.......2002-06-12

This text is an excellent addition to the business valuation literature. The author explores a wide variety of approaches with new methods that are easy to follow. A tremendous amount of work went into the preparation of this book and it is very well written. There is a chapter on startup companies that is especially interesting to me.

If you are at all interested in the income method for valuing businesses, I would strongly encourage you to buy this book. In a review on the back cover of the text, Shannon Pratt strongly recommends the book because the author presents "a scholarly summary of past research, new empirical research of his own, and his conclusions".

My only criticism and surprise is the lack of use of Monte Carlo simulation in these models, which is surprising to me considering how statistically focused the author is and how easy simulation is to learn and employ. Also, the use of real options for valuing startups is extremely important but the author does acknowledge this subject is beyond the scope of his book. Extremely well done and the author should be proud of producing work of this caliber. I'm looking forward to future editions and other books by Jay B. Abrams.

As a Finance MBA, this book is recommended. Why? First of all, this is a practical book that would show us how to assess and forecast the business and cash flow. Furthermore, step-by-step approach is helpful in understanding valuation of privately held firms.

Well Researched Quantitative Approach to Business Valuation.......2000-12-30

Jay Abrams' book is intended primarily for the professional business appraiser, although other financial professionals such as financial analysts, investment bankers, and venture capitalists may well find the book useful.

The business valuation topics covered include (not an exhaustive list): mathematical derivation of cash flow; appplication of regression analysis; theoretical and empirical superiority of arithmetic mean; adjusting for levels of control and marketability; empirical tests of Abrams' valuation theories; valuing startups; and measuring and apportioning dilution in ESOPs.

For each topic covered, the author presents a scholarly summary of past research, new empirical research of his own, and his conclusions. He discusses opposing viewpoints and in at least one chapter allows another author to present a rebuttal of Abrams' approach.

He emphasizes regression analysis of empirical data and quantitative analysis. Near the end he puts all the pieces of the puzzle together to present a comprehensive, unified approach to valuation that can be empirically tested and whose principles work for the valuation of billion dollar firms or small businesses.

Despite the quantitative nature of the book, mathematically challenged readers without recent or extensive mathematical training should not hesitate to buy the book, as long as they are familiar with basic business valuation concepts. The book contains relatively simple and clear explanations of quantitative methods such as regression analysis; and the author has taken pains to include step-by-step procedures for performing regression analysis using Excel and Lotus. Indeed, one of the strengths of the book is that it makes quantitative techniques available to the appraiser who could not, without the author's help, understand the underlying mathematics or utilize the quantitative techniques with confidence and comprehension.

Overall the book is an important, well researched contribution to an in-depth understanding of important business valuation issues.

Is Mr.Sampson a blackmailer? What secrets does he know? What will he do with his knowledge? All these thoughts are haunting the beautiful Mrs. Verney day and night. When she cannot deal with the assaults anymore she decides to talk to her neighbor Mr. Culsworth, who is a successful lawyer. When he hears her story, he is directly and without reservations committed to put an end to this dreadful and felonious practice. Never did he suspect what the impact of his investigations would be. Not only Mrs. Verney seems to be in trouble, also her would-be savior gets in a mess without equal.

Henry Cecil was a County Court Judge for more than 25 years before he started his life as a full-time writer. This experience has made him perceptive to numerous absurd contradictions in the British legal system. In Unlawful Occasions, written in 1962, he paints with quite some pungent sense of humor the life of a professional blackmailer. Unlawful Occasions is in a sense a detective story, but without any dead bodies. This does not mean that there are no skeletons in the closet, on the contrary.

The strongest point in the book is the unpredictable twist of plot in the end. Combined with the comic genius of Cecil, it makes this book a real treat.

Giap cannot be considered but a genius of war, capable of hurting the great American superpower by using small war tactics and a resolve to stay the course. I found the research compelling even thogh this is indeed a pro-Giap study. I highly recommend this book for being sympathetic to a non-western and anti-American (militarily anyway) figure. It is easy to read, altrhough somewhat lacking in concrete biography. And it is good at explaining tactics.

Currey obviously fawns on Giap. Currey has shown no criticil analysis at all in either confirming or refutting Giap's claims. He simply passes them on. At times one cannot tell whether one is reading Currey or Giap.

A Must Read Account For Students of Military History.......2001-08-05

Vietnam history is one of invasion, going back a thousand years. Chinese, Khmer, French, Japanese, and finally the Americans. The Vietnamese have struggled with all of these. If one puts Vietnamese history into this context, one starts to realize that there is no other story like the Vietnamese saga.

General Giap is a figure that must be studied by any serious student of warfare history. Giap was a arduious student of Napoleon, very serious, totally dedicated to his cause. While the fighting spirit and mettle of the Viet Minh cannot be understated, Giap's victory at Dien Bien Phu was nothing short of spectacular, using his army of barefoot soldiers. His grasp of logistics, and his sense of flexability on the battlefield are unsurpassed in modern warfare. His victory gave hope to colonial peoples all over the world, and signaled the end of colonialism. He proved the indiginous people could defeat a modern, powerful army. He fought the riches, most technologically advanced nation ever known to a standstill.

I have totally enjoyed Cecil Curry's book on Giap. Curry's book does not try to glorify the man, nor does he make him out to be an evil communist. He simply tries to tell his story, and why Giap is the genius he is. Also, Curry goes into the excesses of the Vietnamese communist, as well as that of the French, Vietnamese oposition, and the Americans: He never tries to gloss over anything. Curry has some interviews with Giap, which makes the book even more interesting.

This book should be read by anyone who loves military history, whether professionally or not. Any officer in any army could learn something here. Love him or hate him, Giap was a formidable foe, both to his foreign enemies, and those at home. History will remember Giap, and Curry's book will be the definitive source on his story for a long time to come.
