Book Description
Velocity management brings a new way of doing business to U.S. Army logistics, with a renewed focus on the army customer and a powerful approach for process improvement that cuts across three critical performance dimensions: time, quality and cost. The goal of velocity management is to reduce the need for massive logistics resources by increasing the speed and accuracy with which materials and information are delivered. Key logistics processes are defined, measured, and improved, continuously, so customers--army units in garrison and deployed worldwide--get what they need, when they need it and at minimal cost.

Book Description
This book addresses the classical but nonetheless still controversial question of what the role is of judicial discretion in adjudication. Its main purpose is to discuss the philosophical and epistemic foundations of two different legal theories: Hartian positivism and Dworkin's interpretivism. Bearing in mind the debate between realism and antirealism, the author shows how Hartian positivism faces serious difficulties to avoid global scepticism, and the problem of rule-following by simply connecting legal determinacy with the existence of settled conventions. In contrast, it is argued that Dworkin's interpretive theory can overcome scepticism by connecting legal determinacy with the idea of the best interpretation, and by rejecting externalism. With a view to justifying this claim, the author presents a reconstruction of Dworkin's philosophical position, which developed along the lines of Putnam's internal realism and Rawls' reflective equilibrium.
This book will be of interest to legal theorists, lawyers, judges, and philosophers.

Book Description
Colloidal systems are important across a range of industries, such as the food, pharmaceutical, agrochemical, cosmetics, polymer, paint and oil industries, and form the basis of a wide range of products (eg cosmetics & amp; toiletries, processed foodstuffs and photographic film). A detailed understanding of their formation, control and application is required in those industries, yet many new graduate or postgraduate chemists or chemical engineers have little or no direct experience of colloids. This book is based on lectures given at the highly successful Bristol Colloid Centre Spring School, designed to provide a thorough introduction to colloid science for industrial chemists, technologists and engineers. The course has attracted a wide range of industrialists from major companies with over 1000 delegates attending in all. This book brings together the BCC Spring School lectures and presents them in a coherent and logical text on practical colloid science. The authors are well known internationally in their respective fields and the book will be uniquely focussed on providing the reader with a detailed understanding of the practical application of colloid science.

Book Description
`A hopeful but nonetheless hard-hitting analysis of alternative economic spaces proliferating in the belly of the capitalist beast. In this book Leyshon, Lee and Williams convene fascinating studies of exchange, enterprise, credit and community. They invite us onto a new and promising discursive terrain where we can analyze, criticize and above all recognize actually existing economies of diversity in the wealthy countries of the West' -
J K Gibson-Graham, Australian National University and University of Massachusetts, Amherst
In the context of problems in the "new economy" - from dot.com start-ups, high-technology, and telecoms -
Alternative Economic Spaces presents a critical evaluation of alternatives to the global economic mainstream. It focuses on the emergence of alternative economic geographies within developed economies and analyzes the emergence of alternative economic practices within industrialized countries. These include the creation of institutions like Local Exchange and Trading Systems, Credit Unions, and other social economy initiatives; and the development of alternative practices from informal work to the invention of consumption sites that act as alternatives to the monoply of the `big-box', multi-chain retail outlets.
Alternative Economic Spaces is a reconsideration of what is meant by the `economic' in economic geography; its objective is to bring together some of the ways in which this is being undertaken. The volume shows how the `economic' is being rethought in economic geography by detailing new economic geographies as they are emerging in practice.

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Applied Geography, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Rooibos tee (red bush tea) (Aspalathus linearis, Fabaceae), which is indigenous only to the Cedarberg and neighbouring mountains of South Africa, has become popular internationally as a result of its apparent health-giving properties. Situated within the broader contexts of alternative food networks, alternate economic spaces and local/community-based development, this paper examines how two marginalised communities have successfully penetrated international markets by supplying organically produced rooibos tea which is certified by the international Fairtrade system. Focusing on the cases of Wupperthal and Heiveld, the paper explores the dynamics of the production and marketing process and the key variables involved. Success has been achieved through active NGO support, which has engaged with local skills and social capital, and has led to significant social and economic upliftment among the participating communities. The experience illustrates how, given the right conditions, poor communities in the South might participate successfully in global alternative food networks.

Book Description
The North American X-15 was the last in a line of manned rocket-powered research airplanes built during the 1950s to explore ever-faster and higher flight regimes. This was an era before computers were commonplace, and the only way to investigate the unknown was to go there. The program was launched in 1954 specifically to produce the first hypersonic (velocities greater than five times the speed of sound) manned aircraft. Forward-thinking researchers also decided to design the airplane to fly to the edge of space, long before the manned space program had begun in earnest. An in-depth history of the X-15 program may be found in Hypersonic: The Story of the North American X-15 by Dennis R. Jenkins and Tony R. Landis. This book is a collection of illustrations that were assembled for Hypersonic but would not fit into the finished work. Since many of these are significant and most have never before been published, it was decided to print this scrapbook as a companion volume to Hypersonic. With over 350 b/w and 50 color photos, this scrapbook provides an excellent visual look at a very exciting research program.
Customer Reviews:
Great Photos!.......2003-08-26
If you are looking for a detailed history of the X-15 program, you need to purchase Hypersonic, by the same authors. If you want a large number of unusual photographs of the program, then this is th ebook you need to buy. Better yet, buy both. This book says it contains the photos that would not fit into Hypersonic, and there are some real gems here. Many of these have never been seen before, and essentially none of them duplicate the already excellent coverage in Hypersonic.
This is a great book!
Collaboratively compiled and written by aerospace experts.......2003-08-10
Collaboratively compiled and written by aerospace experts Tony R. Landis and Dennis R. Jenkins, X-15 Photo Scrapbook is a collection of over 350 black-and-white photographs and 50 color photos showcasing the last in a line of manned rocket-powered research airplanes to be built during the 1950s. Brief commentary with an eye for technical details is fully enhanced by the pictures, in this visual distinguishment which is very highly recommended for aviation buffs. Also highly recommended is the Landis and Jenkins aerospace history: Hypersonic: The Story Of The North American X-15 , which offers a detailed 276-page history of this remarkable aircraft. The X-15 Photo Scrapbook collects photographs that could not be included in Hypersonic due to space limitations.
Wonderful Photographs.......2003-08-07
If you are looking for a lot of text, then get Hypersonic by the same authors (the best history book ever written on the X-15 program). If you already own Hypersonic, or just want a book filled with seldom-seen (or often, never-seen) photos of the X-15 and its support environment, then this is the book for you. There is essentially no text other than captions. It is only 108 pages long, but contains several hundred photos, all very well reproduced. Twelve of the pages are full-color and contain some wonderful images taken for National Geographic as well as a variety of other photos of the airplanes during their flight test program. I highly recommend this publication.

Book Description
Everybody talks about the weather, but now Jon Nese and Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz, two of the Philadelphia area's most respected meteorologists, have done something about it: they have written the book that answers all our questions about this region's weather and climate, from the Poconos and Philadelphia to southern New Jersey and the Shore to Delaware. The snowiest winter? The hottest summer? The strongest tornado? Signs of global warming? Why can't computers give reliable two-week forecasts?
The Philadelphia Area Weather Book offers a little-known history of the region's pivotal role in the development of weather science that goes back to colonial times, and it gives a lively account of what forecasters actually do on a daily basis. Writing for the general public, including young adults, Nese and Schwartz introduce the key concepts of weather and explain how forecasts are made as well as why they sometimes are wrong. Throughout the book, in sections called "Stories from the Trenches," the authors recall the dramatic weather events (and at least one non-event) that kept area residents tuned in for the latest news.
The features of this lively and informative book make it the perfect gift for weather enthusiasts and an indispensable household reference.
Features:
More than 150 illustrations (including 60 photographs, 54 maps, dozens of diagrams, and a 16-page color section)
Weather statistics for Philadelphia, Wilmington, Allentown, and Atlantic City
Lists of web resources organized by topic so that readers can follow current weather events using the same sites as the experts do
Customer Reviews:
For The Average Weather Fan and the Advanced Meteorologist.......2003-11-23
The most comprehensive book dealing with the Philadelphia area's weather. This book is excellent for the average person interested in the weather, and for advanced meteorologists. It is simply fascinating. The highlights are the "Stories From The Trenches." These stories describe specific events and what life was like as a forecaster at the time. I've met Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz several times and the man knows his weather! If you are interested in the weather, whether you're an expert or not, this book is for you!
