Book Description
Praise for Real Options and Option-Embedded Securities
"Whether you are deciding which capital projects to undertake, determining how to finance those projects, or managing and controlling risks arising from your investment and financing decisions, you confront options within the modern firm. Real Options and Option-Embedded Securities is noteworthy in that it offers a comprehensive treatment of pricing and strategic applications of options throughout the firm. This includes designing and valuing option-embedded securities issues, accounting for flexibility in capital project analysis, and employing options within a firm's risk management program. This book should prove quite useful to practicing financial managers and business students alike."-Clifford W. Smith Jr., Louise and Henry Epstein Professor, University of Rochester
"In this uncertain and fast-changing economic environment, corporations and consultants draw heavily on the concept of real options to quantify and direct strategy. For instance, we value start-up ventures as options, and Real Options and Option-Embedded Securities provides a detailed guide to identifying and valuing options such as these. My only complaint about the book is that it wasn't available when I studied options in my MBA program! Nicely done. I highly recommend it."-Anton Griessner, Senior Consultant, Deloitte Consulting
"This book accomplishes two things I didn't think possible. It presents a comprehensive yet understandable treatment of the challenging field of option pricing, and it offers a unified approach to the use of options in solving problems in corporate finance. The book delivers! I heartily recommend it to practitioners and students of modern finance."-Darla Moore, President, Rainwater, Inc.

Not Worth the Read.......2007-05-21
I have read several real options books, and this is by far the worst. I would suggest reading Tom Copeland's book if you want a more applied discussion or Lenos Trigeorgis if you want a more theoretical discusison. In fact, Moore (the author) doesn't even really get to real options until ten or so chapters into the book. Theere is too much preliminary stuff that talks about derivatives and financial option strategies, which one does not expect from a real options book. I basically just flipped through the pages and read the interesting paragraphs. I was done in a half hour. Most of the other stuff I already knew from reading other derivatives texts
the best book on real options that I have read.......2001-12-13
This book was thorough and comprehensive in its discussion of real options while remaining understandable. The real world examples, stories, and graphs helped increase my comprehension. I was most impressed by the author's detailed explanations of how options can be strategically used in corporate risk management. The chapters on valuation, modern option pricing, and capital investment decisions were excellent as well. Hands down the best book on real options that I have read.

Book Description
This book is about applying what is known about financial options to many everyday decisions that arise in business finance. The book has as its basis a specialized field in financial economics that has come to be known as "contingent claims analysis," and in that spirit the viewpoint throughout is that a wide variety of issues confronting managers of modern firms can be analyzed as options. The insights developed and explained herein, far from being new, are rather the product of important intellectual advances brought to us by scholars over the past few decades.

Book Description
This volume contains the basic international documents relating to the conditions under which one country will provide information, evidence and other forms of assistance to another in the investigation and prosecution of criminal offences and in countering malpractice in the world’s securities and futures markets. Major multilateral initiatives have been pioneered by the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the Organisation of American States, the Commonwealth and others. Supported by a growing number of sub-regional and bilateral agreements, the obligations imposed have had a major impact on domestic legislation and are of increasing importance to prosecutors and national regulatory authorities. The work contains a substantive Introduction which places the documents in context and provides a detailed overview of the subject.

A must if you're interested in the medieval Middle East.......2002-04-27
I read this in a university library and found it so engrossing and useful that I needed a copy of my own. An almanac initally sounds very dull, but Varisco's extensive commentary provides so many details on so many subjects, its simply amazing. It's not simply about science or even agriculture, it also contains a great deal of anthropolgical data that you don't find in other similar works. All too frequently, books dealing with the past dwell on the history, rather than the reality of the time. This work really captures the feel of the time period with its lavish details and research. Much of it could really qualify as trivia, but that's really what makes it such a wonderful piece of work, as it isn't just concerned with the big issues of the time, but with what every man knew. If you're at all interested in what the period was like, beyond simple history, this is a great book. It's largely concerned with things related to agriculture as it's a very protracted translation and explanation of an almanac, so covers crops, the weather (a topic everyone's always discussed, past or present), health, astronomy, sex, the environmental, and many things in between. This presents a real portrait of the time period beyond what the title implies. This is a very thorough yet wide ranging work. It's very light on religion, but there's scores of books on medieval Islam, so this is not a great flaw. This is not quite like any other book you'll find on the period and thus why it is so great.

Book Description
This book systematically develops models of Spatially-varying transient processes describing thermal events. Such events should be entirely predictable for a given set of physical properties, system geometry, and initial-boundary conditions. For the various initial-boundary value problems which model a reactive thermal event, the following questions are addressed: 1. Do the models give a reasonable time-history description of the state of the system? 2. Does a particular model distinguish between explosive and nonexplosive thermal events? 3. If the thermal event is explosive, can one predict where the explosion will occur, determine where the hotspots will develop, and finally predict how the hotspot of blowup singularities evolve? Primary emphasis is placed on explosive thermal events and we refer to the three aspects of such events as Blowup - When, Where, and How.

Combution Theory, the must have book.......2000-06-13
This book is a must for any research assistant working in combution theory. I use it every day as a reference and I have not found a better book for ease of use when trying to sort out complex equations. Also, because of the difficulty finding books on combustion theory and the mathmatical models behind those theories, this is an easy find for such a subject. The author presents all his information in an easy to use format that allows the reader to fully understand the context of all his experiments.

A Geometric Approach to Differential Forms

Book Description
The use of single crystals for scientific and technological applications is now widespread in solid-state physics, optics, electronics, materials science, and geophysics. An understanding of the variation of physical properties with crystalline direction is essential to maximize the performance of solid-state devices. Written from a physical viewpoint and avoiding advanced mathematics, Tensor Properties of Crystals provides a concise introduction to the tensor properties of crystals at a level suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. While retaining the successful basic format of the well-known first edition, this second edition brings the material up to date with the latest developments in nonlinear optics and modulated structures. Because of the increasing importance of nonlinear optics, a new chapter on optoelectronics has been added. This edition also includes a short discussion on incommensurate modulated structures in the final chapter because they are relevant to high temperature superconductors and to ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials. The book extensively contains diagrams, worked examples, and problems with answers throughout.

Pedagogical introduction to the physical prop. of crystals.......2000-08-25
"Tensor Properties of Crystals" introduces gradually the reader to the physical properties of anisotropic crystals. It is a remarkable book from the pedagogical point of view. In contrast with other books in the field it doesn't require a deep previous knowledge of mathematics and crystallography. Crystal symmetry and tensors are introduced in a very comprehensive way in the first two chapters. The remaining chapters are devoted to the areas of elasticity and electric and optical properties of anisotropic crystals. Some worked examples are very useful, specially to those who are begining with tensor manipulation. (These comments refer to the 1st edition of the book (1989)).

The Little Book of Loony Sex Laws reveals over 250 loony sex laws and rules-some current, some ancient. Did you know that in Cleveland women aren't allowed to wear patent leather shoes for fear a man might see the reflection of something that he ought not to! And in England, sex is not allowed on the back of a motorcycle in the city of London!

In The Two O'Clock War Walter J. Boyne chronicles with intense detail the brief but furious October 1973 invasion of Israel by Egypt and Syria, an episode also known as the Yom Kippur War. Boyne alternates his attention between actual battlefield descriptions and the equally frantic maneuvering by diplomats and statesmen of the combatant countries, their allies. and, most ominously, Russia and the United States, which refused to stop rattling their sabers at each other. At least twice, the region--and by implication the greater world--came perilously close to suffering the ultimate nightmare: nuclear war. Boyne's language is often blunt but he is generally fair-minded: his showers of blame and praise fall on individuals on both sides of the conflict. Running through the book is his premise, convincingly presented, that a massive American airlift--Operation Nickel Grass--was the decisive factor in Israel's fending off defeat. The book--especially its military sections--demands a reader's full attention. --H. O'Billovich
Book Description
October 6, 1973. Yom Kippur. The holiest day of the Jewish calendar. At 2 p.m., a blinding shower of explosives rained down on a collection of concrete bunkers sunk in the Sinai sand. Minutes later, 600 Egyptian tanks rolled onto pontoon bridges to cross the Suez Canal. Simultaneously, 100 Syrian MiGs and Sukhoi bombers screamed through the skies above the Golan Heights. Burning at both ends, Israel was caught completely by surprise. The United States, after much vacillation, finally elected to help Israel, beginning a monumental airlift, code named: Operation Nickel Grass. In two weeks time, the U. S. armed forces would be on Def Con III and nuclear tensions would be mounting within the Kremlin. The Two OClock War is a minute-by-minute account of that fateful October when Israel was almost lost and the two superpowers stared down the barrel of the nuclear gun.
Customer Reviews:
A Compelling Read.......2007-06-09
COL Walter Boyne tells a very compelling story of the Yom Kippur War and the efforts by the United States to resupply its closest ally in her time of need. The book is great at portrayng the war from almost every point of view - from Henry Kissinger's efforts through "Shuttle Diplomacy" to arrange a ceasefire to the disarray of Israel's leadership in response to the surprise attack to the cockpits of the C-5As and C-141s as the pilots winged their way to Israel with the desparately needed cargoes.
The airlift saved a nation in dire need. So important was this aerial lifeline that Prime Minister Golda Meir paid a personal visit to Lod airport to see, "the great planes", for herself and show her appreciation of the young pilots who flew them.
But what is only touched on is the real story of a very professional and very capable United States Air Force of the 1970s. While the rest of the U.S. Armed Forces remained borderline disfunctional from the aftermath of the Vietnam War, the U.S. Air Force was an experienced, well trained and professional force who accomplished astounding achievements in the early 1970s. Only 18 months before the Yom Kippur War, the U.S. Air Force expeditiously deployed enough fire power back to Southeast Asia to stop North Vietnam's 1972 Easter Offensive and forced the North Vietnamese back to the negotiating table. They followed this up with a massive airlift of munitions and equipment to make good on ARVN material losses early in that offensive. In hindsight, one can say that this airlift was a rehearsal for the even larger one that took place during the 1973 war.
Equally important, in his epilogue COL Boyne outlines the lessons learned from this operation that shaped our nation's airlift capability. This included adding an aerial refuelling capability to our airlifters so that we no longer had to rely on our "allies" for refueling stops. More of the valuable C-5s were added to the fleet. And command and control changes were made that allowed the USAF authority to control joint airlift forces. All this proved invaluable when the nation's airlifters were called once again in 1990 to sustain our response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.
The story of the airlift and its importance is unknown to the American public and largely forgotten now except by those who were there. Yet it will go down in aviation history along side the Berlin Airlift as one of America's best moments and COL Boyne's book gives overdue credit and recognition to those who made it happen.
Too Much Fluff.......2006-12-15
If you're looking for light, casual Middle East reading, this book is for you. If you prefer a to-the-point book (more difficult to write, because you can't ramble and have to constantly prove your point like an intelligent person), stay away. Especially if you need it for a book report.
It's more of a general history of the 1973 War, with information about the airlift in there at random places. Why is it called the Two O'Clock War? See, I thought the airlift that saved the day was done at 2 AM, then the title would be commemorating the last-minute nature of the airlift. No, it turns out that the Arab attack occurred at 2 PM on October 6th. Huh? The current Iraq War began at 9:30ish PM, do we start calling that the 9:30 War? I can understand if the time was an unusual time of day, but two in the afternoon? Sheesh.
OK, so it's full of fluff and anecdotes, which is good if you're not up-to-date on Middle East history and looking for relaxing fireplace reading, but for Middle East wonks, it'll largely be a waste of your time.
As said previously, it's kinda easy to write a book filled with tangents and your points of view on everything from American foriegn policy to Golda Meir's humble origins in Russia. Doing research to write 200+ pages on the airlift, and how it saved Israel? Not here.
It can still be for you, depending on your level of familiarity with the conflict. If you're new to Middle East history, it's a great start. If you're looking for quirky anecdotes, also great. Serious info about the airlift which takes up half the subtitle? Nah.
Reply to Mr. Henning.......2006-05-31
It was with some discomfort that I read Mr. Henning's review. I have heard this statement before, ie "The FACT is most of the weapons sent were replacements for those taken out or un-used additions to what was available and in use. Most never saw action." (His emphasis) Apparently that is the official Israeli position. Now, I can understand why the State of Israel would want to promote this idea, after all, no one surrounded by possible future enemies in another war wants to admit a weakness. The trouble is, that statement is just plain nonsense. I was there. I was a US Air Force C-141 pilot at the time and flew a load of supplies from Charleston to Lajes, then was detached from my crew and used to augment other crews on the round trip to Lod. As a result I flew multiple round trips without ever returning to the States, thereby making many more trips to Israel than most. I remember what we were carrying and how much we were carrying. I remember the frantic atmosphere and the sense of desperation among the people at Lod. (I also remember the lovely El Al stewardesses who met every flight and gave every crew member a dozen red roses!) I remember the post mission recap where it was disclosed that the time from arrival at Lod until the ammunition was expended was eight hours. And I remember the FACT (my emphasis) that the vast majority of the Arab tanks destroyed were destroyed by Maverick and Tow anti tank missles, missles which were almost nonexistant in the prewar Israeli inventory.
I haven't really thought much about Operation Nickle Grass in the thirty years since but was amazed when I recently became aware of this apparent attempt to minimize the impact of this airlift. It is just not true and, frankly, is a bit irritating and insulting.
The definitve story of the Israel's most dangerous war........2005-05-12
Mr. Boyne does an incredible job of explaining all the facets of this terrible war. He investigates Israel's decision to not call up the their reserves (I believe 20% of the IDF is composed of reservists) & the mistaken belief that air power would overwhelm the Arabs as it did in 1967. On the Arab side(mostly Egyptian), Boyne discusses the improved battle plan over the 1967 Six Day war debacle. Of course, the Soviet Union was responsible for arming them and instructing in how to use the anti-aircraft SAMS that devastated the IAF.
Also, unlike the hideous "Eve of Destruction" book, Mr. Boyne keeps us up to speed throughout the book on the diplomatic actions that were occuring.
Mr. Boyne does a great job explaining all the major players on all sides: Henry Kissinger, Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan, Anwar Sadat, vegetarian Assad, but also other future figures Hosni Mubarak and Ariel Sharon.
Finally, he recounts in intimate detail the story behind the Henry Kissinger led US airlift that essentially saved the great State of Israel.
Thank you Mr. Boyne for an incredible book.
Reply to M.D. Roberts.......2005-05-09
Mr. Roberts states he has problems with the statements made concerning the idea that the war would have been lost if not for US aid in terms of weapons. I cannot agree more and it is an important point considering this book is concerned with the US airlift. The FACT is most of the weapons sent were replacements for those taken out or un-used additions to what was available and in use. Most never saw action. The majority of weapons used were already at hand. The airlift, in effect, increased Israel's available vehicles, artillery, etc. once the cease-fire had been imposed. The air-lift provided needed feelings of security and support more than battlefield resources. I may be off here, but I believe the numbers were around 80% of what was sent was not actually used in that conflict. Mr. Roberts makes a number of other good observations and should be considered by those that read his review.
Book Description
Barbara Holland guides us lightheartedly through the touchy subject of honor-and how to defend it-in this compulsively readable history of dueling's first thousand years.
The medieval justice of trial by combat evolved into the private duel by sword and pistol, with thousands of honorable men-and not-so-honorable women-giving lives and limbs to wipe out an insult or prove a point. Here are their stories, from Dumas's Three Musketeers to America's founding fathers, including the New Orleans doctors who settled their medical disagreements under The Oaks, the short-lived newspaper editors of America's South and West, and certain twenty-first-century Parisian politicians.
The duel was essential to private, public, and political life. Where it was technically illegal, those who followed the elaborate codes of procedure were seldom prosecuted and rarely convicted: they were obeying a grand old tradition. Gentlemen's Blood is the definitive guide to this courtly violence, from an author called "a witty curmudgeon" by George Will and "a national treasure" by the Philadelphia Inquirer, whose style, according to Kirkus Reviews, "fits somewhere between E.B. White and Andy Rooney."
A Smithsonian Magazine Selection.

No Relationship To Reality.......2004-04-16
I read Barbara Holland's description of dueling in Germany with dismay. Not one wit of the practices, purposes, procedures, social functions, legal sanctions, political position or technical aspects of German dueling she describes bear any resemblance to the facts of twentieth century German experience. As the first American after the Second World War to be admitted into a German student dueling fraternity and having fought duels myself, I can say authoritatively that the barbaric, illegal, pointless and grotesque activities described in her chapter "The German Version" bear no relationship to reality of German dueling over the last century. I'm not talking about missing the mark on a couple of points. I'm talking wholesale wrong, too wild to even try to summarize. If the German material is in anyway representative of the level of research in the remainder of the book, it is not worth the paper it is printed on. Titillating though they might be, the book's subjects of which I have first-hand knowledge are no more than inexplicable fantasy.
Fire When Ready!.......2004-01-15
There's a lot to like about this enjoyable, lighthearted romp through centuries of dueling. It was a revelation to me that dueling was such an integral part of (male) western society over the last 500 years. You will shake your head at the absurdity, tragedy, and occasional glimmers of commonsense that permeate personal combat over the centuries. Barbara Holland's style is breezy and ironic. Some great moments-duelists battling it out in balloons-and interesting close encounters with dueling by such figures as Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain, Occasionally style trumps content, and there are a few passages that show signs of hastiness or sloppiness, but this is a minor defect.
PS: Teen and preteen boys will love it!
a pretty good read.......2003-12-14
I find myself wondering if were dueling still legal whether someone would challenge the author for casting aspersions on the practice.
All jokes aside, "Gentlemen's Blood" is a witty and engaging look at a social custom that seems incomprehensible in the late 21st century. Reading it, I could only think of how many stupid things are done in the name of honor and manhood.
I disagree with the negative comments about this book. I don't think the author is a "hack," and I don't think that she spares the readers descriptions about how unpleasant it is to get stabbed or shot. Pushkin's death from being gut shot in his last duel is a particularly vivid image that she describes.
I also think that people should not read it expecting a deep discussion about swordplay and gunslinging. The book is meant to be amusing and informative, and it certainly is.
The only criticism that I have against "Gentlemen's Blood" is that the author's thesis that modern day warfare is just dueling writ large is idiotic. In the past, some wars --particularly those of absolute rulers-- had features of duels, however, I would submit that an event like World War II or Vietnam is nothing like a duel.
So, so dull........2003-11-29
This is a facinating subject, but Holland turns it into an incredibly boring read. While her book has some interesting historical information, one has to read through lenghty and unentertaining anecdotes to get them. Her literary style tends to be sophmoric and unpolished. Perhaps most annoying, her political bent often comes through in her writing, and it can be insulting. This is a book that I could not even bring myself to finish reading, and I cannot recommend it.
More of Holland's inimitable wit!.......2003-09-18
Barbara Holland has a winning way of bringing historical figures vividly to life. For instance, our illustrious presidents are all too human in "Hail to the Chiefs," her delightful romp through American history (updated to include George W. and reissued by The Permanent Press, 2003). In Holland's "Brief Heroes and Histories"--many gathered from biographical sketches previously published in "Smithsonian" magazine--figures from Cleopatra to Elvis to Marx are re-examined with a fresh and funny perspective (Akadine Press, 1998). "They Went Whistling" (Random House, 2001) is closer in structure to "Gentlemen's Blood," in that the most interesting people and stories have been carefully sifted by Holland and served up with flair for our amused edification--in "Whistling," women who flout the conventions of their times and have Adventures, and in "Gentlemen's Blood," duels and those who fight them. I highly recommend Holland's latest work. Aficionados of guns and such equipment may be disappointed, as this is a history of duels, not an encyclopedia of weaponry. And anyone whose research methods and subsequent writing can withstand the scrutiny of the "Smithsonian" editorial board is no slouch. Enjoy the book!

Book Description
Arguing that to expect people to make sacrifices for all future generations is unrealistic, this book illustrates how the natural free-rider motivation of the entrepreneur can be steered toward satisfying human needs in a sustainable way. Perception, creativity and entrepreneurship can be converted into usable tools for ecodesign. The book surveys eco-theories from Walden, deep ecology, speciesism and environmental humanism to win-win strategies and factors 4-10.
Customer Reviews:
Very Well Written.......2004-09-08
I have been interested in Business Ethics for quite some time and this book is really something different. Isaak suggests ways in which business can be 'green' and make more profit simultaneously. Definately worth a second glance
good 'n' green.......2000-09-29
As a fan of Isaak and his views on Globalization he presents an interesting perspective on the "ecology-nomics" of the world. I had the opportunity to take his class on globalization and I can attest to the fact that he is a world class "globalist". The book will make you question your views on the world and it's ecological and economic predicament.
