In eleven chapter and 241 pages, Malcolm Smith aims to provide an insider's view of the research process, by focusing on actual choices made in the conduct of accounting research projects, together with a realistic perception of what might go wrong, even with careful planning. The overall aim of the book is to facilitate the conduct of applied research studies in accounting. It takes a practical approach which takes the reader from initiating of the research idea, over developing the conceptual model, identifying theory and literature, developing a specification of hypotheses and collecting and analyzing to the ultimately publishing of the research findings.

The clearly defined structure and smooth writing style help to convey the message. It is furthermore very accessible due to its broad perspective and practical approach. The reader gets a clear overview of the sequence of steps that need to be undertaken to come to a successful publication. Throughout the book, he is made aware of potential pitfalls that he may encounter, and to some extent how to solve them. Practical examples illustrate the theory, making the whole more understandable. The main contribution the book makes to the reader is that it shows how to identify and define research problems and prepare strategies for their solution, how to review existing research and how to offer critiques of articles. In addition, ethical constraints on the conduct of accounting research are discussed.

There are however some drawbacks. A choice had to be made between a broad, extensive perspective and a detailed, intensive perspective. The author discusses for example the most frequently used statistical techniques, without really discussing solutions to statistical problems that may occur. Hence, the book may serve as a guideline to (starting) researchers, clarifying the several steps that need to be undertaken. Other, more specific, literature will however be needed to solve problem to concrete problems.

With continuing instability in Iraq, the threat of a nuclear Iran, and the ever-present reality of further terrorist attacks within its own borders, Saudi Arabia has been forced to make some hard decisions. The current structure of the Saudi security apparatus is only one pathway to improved security. Economic and demographic threats may well be the hardest hurdles to overcome. What has been accomplished since 2001 and what are the real prospects and implications of further reform? To what extent should the kingdom continue to rely on the US to protect its interests? Cordesman and Obaid argue that it is time to put an end to client and tutorial relations. Saudi Arabia must emerge as a true partner. This will require the creation of effective Saudi forces for both defense and counterterrorism. Saudi Arabia has embarked on a process of political, economic, and social reforms that reflects a growing understanding by the governing members of the royal family, Saudi technocrats, and Saudi businessmen that Saudi Arabia must reform and diversify its economy and must create vast numbers of new jobs for its young and growing population. The Benchmark.......2005-11-07

This book, from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, is the current benchmark for analysis of Saudi Arabia's national security issues.

Cordesman and Obaid look at both the external and internal threats to Saudi Arabia, including social and economic issues. The varying military threats from Yemen, Iraq, and Iran are explored in great detail, even down to the number of tanks, artillery, helicopters, and mine-laying ships. The clear conclusion is that for the near and intermediate future, Saudi Arabia needs to keep an eye on Iran and its possible nuclear proliferation threat.

Assaying the domestic threats, the book gives a good overview of Saudi history, its current efforts to combat terror activities, the economic problems looming due to explosive population growth, the challenges confronting the country as it faces modernization and reform, and the economic and security issues surrounding its all-important petroleum industry. All are handled competently, thoroughly, and clearly.

The only downside of this book is the lack of a final copyediting. Punctuation errors abound, particularly in the first half of the book. There are simple--but serious--errors when the name of one country is mistaken for another, though context makes it clear that an error has been committed. It seems obvious, too, that this is a joint effort as one paragraph will be essentially similar to the one following it, varying only in a subordinate clause. One last run through a copyeditor would have fixed these and made reading it far easier.

Even though the book was published just two months ago, it is already out of date in several ways. King Fahd has been succeeded by King Abdullah; there has been a governmental reorganization that changes the power structure within the security services; there has been more activity on the Saudi-Iranian diplomatic front. As it stands, though, this is the best available book on Saudi Arabia's national security.

Highly recommended.

In September 1943, the German army marched into Rome, beginning an occupation that would last nine months until Allied forces liberated the ancient city. During those 270 days, clashing factions -- the occupying Germans, the Allies, the growing resistance movement, and the Pope -- contended for control over the destiny of the Eternal City. In The Battle for Rome, Robert Katz vividly recreates the drama of the occupation and offers new information from recently declassified documents to explain the intentions of the rival forces.

One of the enduring myths of World War II is the legend that Rome was an "open city," free from military activity. In fact the German occupation was brutal, beginning almost immediately with the first roundup of Jews in Italy. Rome was a strategic prize that the Germans and the Allies fought bitterly to win. The Allied advance up the Italian peninsula from Salerno and Anzio in some of the bloodiest fighting of the war was designed to capture the Italian capital.

Dominating the city in his own way was Pope Pius XII, who used his authority in a ceaseless effort to spare Rome, especially the Vatican and the papal properties, from destruction. But historical documents demonstrate that the Pope was as concerned about the Partisans as he was about the Nazis, regarding the Partisans as harbingers of Communism in the Eternal City. The Roman Resistance was a coalition of political parties that agreed on little beyond liberating Rome, but the Partisans, the organized military arm of the coalition, became increasingly active and effective as the occupation lengthened. Katz tells the story of two young Partisans, Elena and Paolo, who fought side by side, became lovers, and later played a central role in the most significant guerrilla action of the occupation. In retaliation for this action, the Germans committed the Ardeatine Caves Massacre, slaying hundreds of Roman men and boys. The Pope's decision not to intervene in that atrocity has been a source of controversy and debate among historians for decades, but drawing on Vatican documents, Katz authoritatively examines the matter.

Katz takes readers into the occupied city to witness the desperate efforts of the key actors: OSS undercover agent Peter Tompkins, struggling to forge an effective spy network among the Partisans; German diplomats, working against their own government to save Rome even as they condoned the Nazi repression of its citizens; Pope Pius XII, anxiously trying to protect the Vatican at the risk of depending on the occupying Germans, who maintained order by increasingly draconian measures; and the U.S. and British commanders, who disagreed about the best way to engage the enemy, turning the final advance into a race to be first to take Rome.

The Battle for Rome is a landmark work that draws on newly released documents and firsthand testimony gathered over decades to offer the finest account yet of one of the most dramatic episodes of World War II.

The Battle for Pius.......2007-08-07

This is an excellent history of both the Nazi occupation of Rome and the activities of the resistance. Of course, the real purpose of the book is to serve as a vehicle for Katz' condemnation of Pius XII and the Papacy. Through the first half of the text I was a convert, but skepticism had set in by the time I finished. First, in analyzing the behavior of Pius, Mr. Katz argues the most negative possible interpretation with deadening fervor. Second, while accepting the fact that Pius knew by mid-morning of March 24 that the Nazi's planned a 10-to-1 retaliation for the Via Rasella bombing, there is apparently no evidence that he knew the Ardeatine massacre would take place that same day, but Mr. Katz is quite deliberate about minimizing this fact while condemning Pius for not having taken action. Third, the reader is dropped into this story on the eve of Mussolini's fall. The two-decade relationship between the Vatican and Mussolini's government is given no attention, yet this relationship would have been an important factor in how Pius dealt with the occupying Germans. In conclusion, Mr. Katz's view of Pius XII could very well be right on target, but my reaction to his presentation is similar to my reaction to the politically-correct specials on PBS -- "Okay, now I want to hear the other side of the story!"

Information good, but too many characters to simply provide an index in beginning of book - I would have preferred parenthetical references. Too many dates.....read like a typical newspaper article.
Otherwise an objective-appearing work of value.

The (Complicated) Battle for Rome.......2006-09-14

I found Mr. Katz' work in this book to be above average. The occupation of Rome is a complicated subject, but he manages to cover a great deal of material, tying it all together logically, and giving a great deal of detail without neglecting the greater picture. This isn't just a mixture of old information that has been available in other books before, either. The author has used data only recently declassified to give even more insight to what has, in the past, been a rather fuzzy understanding of events.

It did take a chapter or two to really get involved in the story, admittedly. The author refers to an event in the preface that doesn't actually take place until 2/3rds of the book later, which sort of lends a "when he is going to talk about it..." thought process, and I've found myself referring back to things I didn't quite process at the beginning of the book, as I read further.

In general terms of approachability and interest, however, it's been a great read.

intricate story.......2006-06-09

Well researched, shows the different characters that played roles during the german army occupation of Rome. My only regret is that some of the famous phrases, quotes, or poems in original language (roman dialect) were not reproduced, but rather only the translation in english.

A Great Public Service.......2005-08-23

Since my first visit to Italy, and especially Rome, in 1949, I have been fascinated by its people, history and culture, both historical and contemporary. There seems to be no end to the amount one can learn about Italy; almost daily new facts arise that bear not only on the present but also on events of the recent past to long ago..

Robert Katz, the distinguished historian and authority on the modern period, particularly 20th -century Italy until today has performed a great public service in bringing us TheBoot.it, in which he clearly and, above all, correctly reviews many of the events that in our time have brought Italy from the depths of misery and fascism to a level of prosperity and democracy enjoyed by few other nations of this world. His research and analysis, much of it appearing only on TheBoot, provides an invaluable source of vital information either long forgotten or unavailable elsewhere.

I congratulate and thank Robert Katz for his unique service to all of us.

A touching yet comic tour de force........2001-08-11

An inspiring book for would be inventors who think they could be the next Thomas Alva Edison. Baylis traces an eventful life from childhood during the London Blitz to his hilarious adventures as an underwater stunt man. He recounts in detail the pit falls awaiting the tyro inventor and explains how he invented his clock work radio after watching a TV programme on the spread of the AIDS epidemic. Baylis is not only a brilliant inventor he also proves himself here to be a clever and witty writer. This is a book that demands to be read at one sitting and should be on the Christmas list for everyone's favourite relative.
