Straight and to the point.......2006-07-27
Most texts I've read on Accounting (from my father's extensive library) are long on explanation and short on worked examples. The Schaum series on Accounting is just the opposite. No need to wade through a ton of explanation. A short explanation is followed by worked examples and numerous test questions followed by the answers, fully worked. I'm just starting out in accounting, and sometimes the concepts didn't really gel with me. But by doing the test questions, and in particular being able to check the results and supplied workings, I found that I learnt the principles much more quickly than I would have otherwise, and was able to retain the understanding.
I borrowed this book from my local library, but then I decided it was a perfect reference book to own.
And I bought almost the entire set of the Schaum's accounting series on the strength of my experience with this learning approach.
An excellent book - an excellent series.
Well Organized Material.......2005-11-23
Schaum's Financial Accounting is a well-written book which augmented my accounting studies.
I especially like the way the table of content is organized. The first three chapters provide an introduction to financial accounting, financial statements and the process of analyzing and recording transactions.
The next three chapters spend time on adjusting and closing entries and then on trial balance worksheets (both for service-oriented and merchandise-oriented businesses). This sets the stage for examining all major aspects of the balance sheet, which chapters 7 through 12 cover.
Following Schaums Outlines typical format, this book presents material in an easy-to-understand manner and then offers the reader with opportunities to solidify their understanding of course material through "Solved Problems" and chapter-end questions.
Shim and Siegel do a fine job of keeping material concise while discussing all major topical points.
They conclude their book with chapters covering partnerships, financial statement analysis, statement of cash flows and multinational operations.
This book merits a 3 1/2 star rating. You might consider Schaums Principles of Accounting I and II for a more thorough examination of the same topical material. However, if you wish to buy just "one book" to augment your studies, "Financial Management" would be a fine choice.
Schaum's Financial Accounting 2 Ed. .......2005-10-14
I am an accounting student. I love this book! I have bought all the Schaum's books related to Accounting. If I had to choose just one book, it would be this one. I get lost trying to follow our textbook. I open this puppy up and it has everything. I'm able to follow the explanations and examples without any problem. Trust me! You will not be disappointed. I was very impressed by how fast my books got to me. I had books coming to me within 2 days. In less than one week's time, I had all 7 books. It really is worth it. :-)
Good Investment.......2000-09-28
I bought this book to complement a senior level financial accounting course that I took. The book is concise, provides plenty of examples, and helps to solidify theories & actual practices of financial accounting. There are plenty of exercises to go through to help solidify your practical understanding of the material. I found that it was particulary useful to help me review & brush up before my tests in my financial accounting course. Overall a good investment.

Book Description
Under the Army1s financial management system for spare parts, logisticscustomers receive budgets to buy spare parts from the supply system andreceive credits for returning parts to the supply system, either for repairor because they are no longer needed in local inventories. The Army1swholesale inventories of spare parts are financed by a "stock fund," whichuses its income from the sale of parts, net of credits issued to customers,to pay for repairs and procurement of replacement parts. Someinstallation-level, or retail, inventories are also financed by stock funds.During fiscal year 2001, the Army1s stock funds were in a period oftransition from separate wholesale and retail components to a Single StockFund (SSF). As part of this change, the Army implemented new price andcredit policies for spare parts. In this document, the authors introduce aset of criteria to assess price and credit policy changes in terms of theireffectiveness in meeting the overall objective of maintaining the logisticscustomer1s ability to meet mission requirements while keeping weapon systemsin operating condition at the lowest total cost to the Army. The authorsthen use these criteria to compare and evaluate pre-SSF, SSF, and proposedfuture price and credit policies, and define the characteristics of anoptimal Army price and credit policy.

Book Description
In recent years the People's Republic of China has experienced rapid economic growth, brought about in large measure by dramatic increases in foreign trade and investment. China's adoption of an `open door' policy in the late 1970s also opened up its banking market to foreigners. As a result, there has been a sharp rise in the number of disputes between Chinese sovereign borrowers and foreign banks, making the availability of appropriate dispute resolution mechanisms for foreign banks a critical factor in the expansion of international finance in China. This book recognizes the need for a unique international dispute forum that addresses intricate political and diplomatic considerations and issues of state sovereignty, issues that typically arise from disputes regarding state contracts between national governments and private foreign parties. The work addresses several problematic private and public international law issues in sovereign debt litigation, including the state immunity theory, the act of state doctrine, forum non conveniens, and the difficulty in enforcing foreign judgments. It offers a comprehensive survey of the many choices open to a foreign bank operator in planning a dispute resolution strategy in China, analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of each process, and examining a series of case studies by way of illustration. The author argues that the autonomy of each party in international arbitration circumvents potential cultural and conceptual difficulties and offers a flexible, mutually acceptable means of conflict resolution which in some circumstances can prove more effective than litigation. Arbitration and the recognition and enforcement of an arbitral award may be recognized as providing a level playing field for international financial transactions between states and foreign private parties, and the non-adversarial nature of the arbitration process makes it particularly appropriate in the Chinese context.

It is not that bad.......2003-12-15
This is my first semester organic chemistry course. Even though I have been using another book for laboratory "Organic Chemistry Lab [...] by Charles E., Jr. Bell", this book helped me to understand the concepts better (many times the instructor quized us on the reasoning behind an experiment which Bell does not mention).
Moreover, Bell's book is somewhat incomplete. For about 25% of the experiments that I performed, we used hand-outs because Bell's did not handle them correclty.
I think that "developing microscale techniques" section was really good to introduce you to the most important techniques that one must master (which Bell does not mention much either.) I think that this book is not as bad as the other reviewers think, at least, relatively not as bad as they might think.
A very bad book.......2003-09-10
This is one of the worst textbooks I have ever used. Luckily, we only used to for one week...I couldn't imagine having to use it for any longer than that. Unfortunately there isn't an option for zero stars.
The worst book I have EVER had........2003-06-04
I have had some terrible professors, but I have NEVER had a book that was as insufficient and wholly undeveloped in its topic. Mayo et al. may know what they are doing in the laboratory, but they must know NOTHING of writing books to convey knowledge. Someone told me that this is the most widely used book for organic chemistry labs. If that is true, I hate to see the sad state of science in a few years when we start to see all the chemists it produces. Because of the overwhelming difficulty of the problems in this book, students are forced to concentrate on specific answers to the questions that are asked and not on the concepts overall. The result: for all the complexity and effort involved, the student learns NOTHING. The second half of the book outright states (in the intro to Chapter 7) that "the mechanisms ... are more involved and not generally developed at the introductory level." I am an undergraduate student whose second semester of organic chemistry lab far outstrips the two- semester academic textbook.
This book is horrible.......2003-05-01
Chances are you are not buying this book for your home organic lab. You probably are buying this for a class. I feel sorry for you.
Don't buy this!.......1997-12-16
I used this text for my organic labs (2 semesters, for majors). I thought the book was pitiful. From the undergrad's perspective, it was disorganized, unclear, verbose; generally excessive. The black and white pages with black line figures are not exactly a pleasure to read. I HAD to buy it. I hope you don't!

A captive and humorous look at life, job well done, thanks........1999-11-07
My husband and I have recently finished reading this most entertaining book. For those of you with a superior sense of appreciation for humor and laughter, this book is a must read. The authors have captured it all. Kudos, we're waiting for your next project.
Perfect antidote to Oprah's selections -- wickedly funny........1999-07-09
Although this book isn't available yet in the States, it's available in Canada. I was given the book when I was at home sick, and nearly ripped out my stitches from laughing so hard! It's acerbic, rude, politically incorrect, and hits the mark -- all those things we think but won't say. Very very funny reading.
Book Description
For much of the 16th century the Mediterranean was a battleground between Christians and Muslims. A decisive battle between two large galley fleets was expected to decide the fate of the entire Mediterranean basin. In August 1571, an Ottoman fleet of some 235 galleys encountered the slightly smaller Christian fleet of the Holy League. In a five hour melee the Christians inflicted a decisive defeat on the Turks. Lepanto was the last great galley fight of all time and one of the most decisive naval battles in history. This book details the course of one of the most crucial military campaigns of the Renaissance.
Customer Reviews:
Great story .......2007-07-26
Great story and the book gets right to the point. Although I'm not so sure about the author's approach on describing the battle by sections or areas as opposed to chronological developments. Nevertheless is great reading for history buffs
A Great Book About A Great Battle.......2006-05-22
This book sets the standard for all books in the Osprey Campaign series. It focuses on the battle, is well organized, and easy to read. Konstam and Bryan should be commended for a job well done. Anyone who has read an Osprey Campaign book will recognizes the familiar organization of the chapters. Essentially, the authors improve upon this well established pattern through effective writing.
The chapter on Opposing Commanders provides a good example. A paragraph is devoted to each relevant character. In addition, the individual's name is highlighted in bold at the beginning of each paragraph. This simple element allows the reader to easily refer back to this chapter as needed.
A significant portion of this book is focused on the battle itself. Although one might think this obvious, it is not the case in all Osprey books. The Battle of Lepanto consisted of action between three smaller divisions, the North, Center, and Southern "Battles." The author takes the time to inform the reader that he will discuss each action in its entirety instead of covering the whole battle simultaneously. The point is that the reader knows what the author is doing and doesn't have to guess.
The Battle of Lepanto contains several significant figures, multiple countries, and a battle that has three significant actions. The complexity of this battle provides numerous opportunities for an author to write a confusing and jumbled narrative. The fact that Konstam and Bryan cover this battle in a clear and easy to read fashion is commendable. As noted above, this book sets the standard for which all Osprey books should strive to reach.
One of the best in Osprey Campaign series.......2004-06-03
I am a long time fan of Osprey Campaign series - I have all the 120 first titles - and this is definitely one of the very best. It is not very frequent - and not very easy - to combine historical accuracy with a great number of facts and statistics and in the same time to provide the reader with such a passionating narration. Felicitations to Angus Konstam.
A Must Have for an Osprey Fan.......2004-03-08
Much credit must be given to the author of this title, Angus Konstam, for delivering a clear, consise, and very enjoyable summary of the events leading up to Lepanto, the Battle itself, and its effects and aftermath.
The maps in this Osprey installment is great, though not magnificent but other parts of the book definetley make up for that. The Order of Battle (Consisting of three pages) is very clear and interesting to look at, as is the introduction and the opposing fleets and commanders. Though at first one may be a little confused of the names of the admirals and captains both Christian and Muslim (there are plenty of Ali's flying around), but due to the very smooth progression of this installment one will nail the names down in no time. I am, though, a little bit disappointed at the lack of information drawn on the Ottoman commanders (they didn't even give a picture of Ali Pasha, the Ottoman admiral) in this section, they later make up for it when they clearly show their personalities during the battle.
The Battle itself is the best part of the book, unlike many other Osprey campaigns that have a stronger prelude to battle than the battle proper. This part of the book has three parts of its own, the battle of the Christian left and the Ottoman right (which clashed first), the battle of the Christian and Ottoman centres (which is by far the most interesting), and the clash (though minor) of the Christian Right and the Turkish left. Though it might sound unattractive, it is truly a very good way to present the battle as each flank almost exclusivley fought with its opposite flank. Each clash is covered with great detail and imagrey (I was amazed at imagining 60 galleys packed together in an amazingly tiny space with thousands of soldiers confusedly storming each other's ships across broken oars seeing less than 5 yards ahead of them due to the choking smoke from the canon and musket, fighting desperatley with sword and pike), and is extremely clear. Never once was I confused as what happened (see Waterloo 1815 if you want a confusing summary), and even without the great 3D maps I could picture the battle, blow by blow. Coming to the 3D maps, they are very clearly laid out and colourful and not in the center of the two pages (thus allowing you not to tear apart the book), with seperate symbols units for the Venetian Galeasses, which might have very well became the desicive factor in the Christian victory. The 3 full colour battlescenes are extremely colourfull and well drawn, but do not show much in terms of actuall material other that banners and the such.
The Aftermath is almost as strong as the long, clear, and vivid battle summary, showing that the battle was not as decisive at popularly thought. As the author states earlier in the book, Galley's can be rebuilt, but the lost lives cannot. In terms of lost lives, the Christians lost a little less than the Turks (around 25,000 each) even though the Turkish fleet lost 170 of its 240 galleys. Indeed, the Turks rebuilt just a large as a fleet they lost the following year. The short-term effects might have been weak for the Christians (Cyprus was not re-captured, no other land was taken, the Barbary Corsairs lived on, and the Turks rebuilt thier fleet), but Konstam covers the long term effects clearly and backed with much evidence. Truly, as seen and told in the book, the only thing Lepanto truly created was breaking the myth of Turkish marinetime invunerability and the death of experienced Turkish ship commanders which led to a halt in the Turkish offensive naval policies (even though they have continued sucsess defensively).
Now comes the criticising. Well, the main problem with this book is the author not delivering a straight answer for the decisive factor in the battle that led to the Christian victory. This is a minor problem though, because since the battle summary is so well laid out and clearly pictured one can make their own assumptions to why the Christans won such a major victory (my assumptions is the Venetians galeasses breaking the initial Turkish line). Other than that...nothing. The lack of numerous detractors to this installment, coupled with the vivid and clear picture of a very interesting battle as well as great maps, make this a must-have for any Osprey enthusiast.
Credit to Author and Ospery.......2004-01-20
Lepanto 1571 (Campaign, 114) by Angus Konstam is a well written, yet concise, account of the Holy Alliance's total defeat of the Ottoman Navy off the coast of Greece. It follows the usual Ospery style with a brief explanations of the rival commanders, their navies, the campaign and the aftermath. The best compliment that can be given the author is that my appetite was wetted for more information concerning the battle and the aftermath. Konstam raises many questions, although only briefly, that deserve further consideration. Among them are why the Ottomans joined the battle given their knowledge of the frailty of the Holy Alliance and whether the Holy Alliance's superiority in artilitery was decisive.
All in all, this was a good book and a credit to the author and Ospery.
Book Description
David Hilliard was the Chief of Staff of the Black Panther Party, and this is his compelling eyewitness account of America's first black armed revolutionary movement. Written with the participation of many other Party members, this book provides firsthand accounts of Huey Newton's infamous shootout with the police, the murder of Fred Hampton, how Panther money was raised and spent, the sexual mores of the Party, and how illegal activities erupted and were controlled. According to the FBI, the Panthers were "the greatest threat to the internal security of the country," and, in part due to government infiltrators and disinformation, the Party began to dissolve in the early seventies as police raids, gun battles, IRS investigations, trials, and prison terms decimated their ranks.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and insightful.......2004-07-29
This was extremely eye-opening for me. I loved the fact there were black people, young black people, in that time who were collectively doing what they could for us to come up at that crucial period in the late '60s. I don't think the Panthers get the respect they deserve in terms of their part in the Civil Rights era. To some, they had a nonconventional way of getting their message across, but I admired their courage and their intelligence. Hilliard examines everyone who was a crucial part of the movement, including Kathleen and Eldridge Cleaver, Lil' Bobby Hutton, Bobby Seale, Geronimo Pratt, Huey Newton, and others. He also discusses his own personal demons and how it afflicted him as well as the party. All in all, it was a very good read for me and was much needed.
An inspiring story........2001-10-11
This is I think is first book I ever read by a Black Panther Party member. Most certaintly, the BPP was extremely controversial and weighted down with informants, provocateurs, and sell-outs. But Hillard wasn't one of them. He seems to give an honest account of his involvement in the Party. His story will give you great respect for a group of brothers and sisters who dared to take a stand against White supremacy, police brutality, and other forms of injustices. His is an inspiring story.
Essential to any comprehensive ethnic issues collection.......2001-08-08
David Hillard and Lewis Cole's This Side Of Glory (1-55652-384-X, $18.95) provides the autobiography of Hillard and his involvement with the Black Panther Party. The Party's history, focus, and events are revealed in this eyewitness account. Essential to any comprehensive ethnic issues collection.
Truthful.......1999-07-01
This book is very interesting. Hilliard follows the idea of self-criticism throughout this book, leaving the reader with a very broad view of the Panthers. He seems to exclude nothing, he shows the promblems and the triumphs of this grand party. All power to the people finally came to mean something to me, instead of being some "crazy sixties thing." This should be read by all revolutionaries trying to start an organization and people questioning their government.
A great book for young revolutionaries........1998-09-21
I am glad that I picked up this book. I was interested in learning about the BPP, so when I saw this book I bought it. The book gives an interesting account of what the BPP was about, and who the "cadre" were. I must recommend this for any revolutionary

Book Description
At first glance, Don Rupp's "Remembering Minnesota" may seem to be simply a narrative of photo's and poems celebrating a place of escape and respite from the workday world.
But on closer examination, it becomes clear that Rupp, an award winning photographer, is not leading us on an escape, but rather to a destination.
The photographs and writings in "Remembering Minnesota" describe, with straightforward eloquence, the substance of that destination - the spirituality of nature, the sacraments of familial love and of friendships, and the peace that is to be found in the realization of these things.
Don Rupp's book is a reminder of the uncommon goodness and grace that is contained in common experience. And of how blessed we are to have places like his "Minnesota", places to hold in our moments, in our memories and in our hearts.
