Surprising Errors.......2001-11-20

I'm surprised at the errors in this book. For instance, in Chapter 5's description of value investing, the author defines "Capitalization Rate," as what is really "Market Capitalization," and then in the Cheat Sheet section says "the higher the capitalization rate, the more risk involved."

It makes you wonder about any advice given in this book.

Poorly Written Many ERRORS.......2001-03-24

This book, in my opinion, is very poorly written and does not present the theories very accurately. There are tons of errors which I post below:

1.Page 17 regarding indexes. There are two main types, price weighted and value weighted. General Electric would NOT influence the DJIA as much as 3M would. DJIA is price weighted which means it is representative of ONE SHARE from each company. Stocks with higher share prices NOT market caps will influence the DJIA. GE trades at $39 so it will have one of the LEAST influence on the DJIA. However, the S&P500 is value weighted meaning companies which have larger market caps will influence it most. In this case GE will have a large influence but not on the DOW. 2. Page 22. Systematic risk IS NOT diversifiable. UNSYSTEMATIC is. Think of about the term systematic. IT MEANS MOVES SYSTEMATICALLY with the market which is not diversifiable. NONSYSTEMATIC means uncorrelated to the index which is firm specific and is diversifiable.

3. Page 25 author recommends charting. NUMEROUS academic studies show this is absolutely useless (most forms of technical analysis are).

4. Page 80 on ALPHA. This is totally wrong. Alpha is the extra return you get above a "fair return" given the asset's risk level (beta). Or for the more sophisticated, alpha is the return above the Capital Asset Pricing Model derived return for an asset.

5.Page 81 on Standard Deviation. This is very very wrong and misleading. Standard deviation, in layman's terms, is simply how much a stock deviates from its past average return on a day to day or month to month etc basis. YOU CANNOT SAY THE MARKET HAS A SD OF 1. THIS IS MISLEADING. The last line is false in regard to SD. MPT does not imply you should accept no more deviation than the market. If you margin stock you can still remain on the capital allocation line and have a higher deviation than the market portfolio and still be entirely efficient as per MPT.

6. Page 124. Free cash flow is NOT what is left over after current assets pay current liabilities. THAT IS SIMPLY WORKING CAPITAL.

7.Page 213. Again, incorrect information regarding the balance sheet account called land. LAND CANNOT BE REAPPRAISED

Solid ,useful & interesting.......2001-01-12

Ken Stern interviews 9 eminent investors with very diverse investing styles and perspectives . He covers index investing with John Bogle ,modern portfolio theory with Markovitz, forecasting market trends with Marty Zweig and value investing with Mario Gabelli , to name a few . Seeing all these different approaches drives home the point that investing is an art as well as a science (however imperfect and empiric)___there being the proverbial 1001 ways of skinning a cat ! I noticed that some of the earlier reviewers were a bit dismissive of the experts culled in this book .Well that was prior to the Nasdaq slaughter in the yr 2000 (Nazz down 39% !) I hope that the last year has taught folks who had seen the markets go only skyward that investing is a complex (and fascinating) art and more than just buying and selling the latest fad ! Unless you are the absolute tops as an investor you will take away a useful nugget or two from this book____if nothing else you will realise that there is more than one way of investing successfully and you can fashion your own electic style , based on your temperament and risk tolerance .

another useless book.......2000-04-08

This book was full of interviews with "yesterday's" investment "gurus." Most of the so-called professionals in here haven't been able to beat the market in a long time. Skip this book. It's definitely not worth the money.

Very expensive for what you get.......2007-07-07

I had to buy this book for my Writing for Chemists in college. It was very expensive when I bought it. I only used it once. The book is not very well organized, and it is difficult to find what you need. I think it is not a good book!

The ACS Style Guide (A Manual for Authors and Editors) 2nd is an up-to-date edition for the authors and editors, and a guideline for the American Chemistry Society (ACS) publications. This edition almost answers all the possible question of authors and editors. The detail index from page 431 to page 460 gives us the most effective, comprehensive and user-friendly guide for publication.

The American Chemical Society has done an excellent job in compiling this invaluable resource for its members. It encompasses everything you could possible want to know about writing a scientific paper, posters, letters to the editor, press releases, naming and numbering of chemical compounds, conventions in chemistry, copyright, ethical issues as well as preparing an effective oral presentation. In addition, it has a clear and concise section on grammar and punctuation, a very functional index, is up-to-date including guidelines on how to cite references from Web sites, and provides a useful bibliography after each chapter. My job often involves proofreading of abstracts or journal articles in various fields of science; apart from a dictionary to check spelling, this is the resource I reach for most.

Lectures by a great master........2001-12-20

Max Born, who knew both, rated Pauli as good as Einstein. I don't agree, but, OK, it's a nice compliment! Anyway, Pauli was really great, and a great writer, in this case far surpassing Einstein. These are his lectures (mostly) on Thermodynamics at the ETH, Zurich, which, by the way, was Einstein's alma mater.
Pauli lectured on all of theoretical phyisics there, for several years. He was revered, and the students carefully took notes of whatever he said and write. These notes were then carefully edited by senior colleagues, like Charles Enz. The result was a slim, compact, wonderful text of Carnot-cycle thermodynamics which has even some originality: the master deemed it necessary to reformulate the treatment of chemical equilibrium (using van't Hoof boxes)to reach his standards of excellence.
This is not a text-book on thermodynamics for beginners: it is a
exquisite booklet to polish your understanding and reveal the great elegance and depth of the thermodynamical formalism and, most importantly, ideas.

Great start to understanding the Aztec Empire.......2006-12-22

Hassig has provided us with an excellent account of how the Aztecs conducted warfare before the Spanish arrived and including the fight with them. The tactics are indicative of a modern army and this is a must read if you are studying the Aztec Empire. The book is very well done and offers a unique perspective on warfare. It is hard to find good information about ancient societies warfare but the Aztecs left good records. Their political systems are also scrutinized here. Highly recommend.
