4 out of 5 stars A Little Outdated But Good Guide To The Basics.......2001-01-05

The book is written as a basic yet quite complete guide to all the different financing options available to a company. It is dated 1994 and is a little outdated, particularly in the sections describing venture capital and other types of start-up financing but the fundamentals are there.

As a professional working in corporate finance I found it very useful as a source of quick reference to some less common types of financing and as something I can recommend to my clients to prime them with some knowledge on a subject.

I think that owners and managers in existing companies with $1 million in revenue or more will find the book most useful. It will give them some idea about their options and a body of issues to consider when choosing a financing type or discussing the issue with an advisor.

If you are looking for a guide to start-up financing this book will give you some information but you can definitely find more comprehensive and up-to-date titles.

Finally, I personally expected that E&Y will add their own research to the general topics. However, the book offers little unique information - yet it does it in a well organized and written fashion.

Barrett, Bryant, Translator. The Code Napoleon, Verbally Translated From the French: To Which is Prefixed an Introductory Discourse, Containing a Succinct Account of the Civil Regulations, Comprised in the Jewish Law, the Ordinances of Menu, the Ta Tsing Leu Lee, the Zend Avesta, the Laws of Solon, the Twelve Tables of Rome, the Laws of the Barbarians, the Assises of Jerusalem, and the Koran. London: W. Reed, 1811. Two volumes. cccxciii, 575 pp. Reprinted 2004 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. LCCN 2003044238. ISBN 1-58477-381-2. Cloth.

      * Reprint of the first English edition. Bryant Barrett was an English attorney and member of Gray's Inn. His superb translation is noteworthy in part because it was published the year the Code was enacted. As such, it has the advantage of being in a style of English that is an idiomatic contemporary to the original French. Many scholars believe that this is the finest translation of the Code. Indeed, they have found it to be more accurate than the official Louisiana edition. Barrett's index, which follows the style of English lawyer's common-place books and abridgments, is a thorough guide to the Code. The philological basis of his 393-page introduction had a profound influence on the subsequent development of Classical British legal ethnography.

            Book Description

This book is a comprehensive design text for permanent magnets and their application. Permanent magnets are very important industrially, and are widely used in a variety of applications, including industrial drives, consumer products, computers and automobiles. In the early 1970s a new class of magnet - the rare earths - was discovered, the properties of which showed sustained improvement over the following two decades. New materials such as these have spawned many new markets for magnets, with significant performance gains in the devices for which they are used. By the early 1990s the new magnet technologies had matured. Until the advent of the present book, however, there has been no text that unified all the relevant information on the wide range of modern permanent magnet materials. This book, therefore, has been written as a comprehensive review of the technology, intended for scientists and engineers involved in all stages of the manufacture, design and use of magnets. A brief theory of magnetism explains the behaviour of the different classes of permanent magnet, and the various production processes that lead to quite diverse material characteristics. The core of the book is a detailed treatment of the methods that are used to design permanent magnets, including assessments of the changes they experience under practical operating conditions. Modern analytical techniques are described, including the finite element method, with reference to the accurate simulation of permanent magnet materials. With the evolution of new materials, the markets for permanent magnets have changed. In this book, the author emphasizes the most important modern applications, and discusses the viabilityof the various magnet types that are now available. This book, the first to cover comprehensively all aspects of modern permanent magnet materials, their design and application, will be of value to anyone involved in the design and use of magnets.

4 out of 5 stars not to bad book for magnets designers!.......2004-09-02

I have read this book, not a bad book, there are couple of good chapters, the ones for thermenal stability, magnetic circuits and applications.but I do recommend "Introduction to magnetism and magnetic material" as starter book because this book deals with the theory behind magnets applications. So once you read this book, your able to understand campbell's one.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of Theory adn Modelling Using Magnets.......2000-06-15

Dr. Campbell has written a thorough guide for understanding permanent magnetic materials, and how to use them in designing circuits. This book begins with a review of the mathematics behind the theory of permanent magnets. It then discusses various permanent magent materials. The remainder of the book covers modelling and analysis of circuits using permanent magnets.

This is the bible for the beginning designer and a good review for those experienced in the use of mangetic materials. The book can be supplemented by attending a course run annually by Dr. Campbell....

                      Book Description

In the early 1900s, Petrov "Sugarhouse Pete" Berezney immigrated from a rural Eastern European village to the United States and settled in Jersey City. He struggled to provide for his family during the Great Depression, working as a coal miner, subway laborer, and oil refinery boilermaker, even as he coped with his wife Anna's severe depression.

Sugarhouse Pete and Anna raised five boys-John, Mike, Paul, Pete, and author Steve M. Berezney. Paul became part of a famed college football team, where he gained renown as one of the "Seven Blocks of Granite," played for the Green Bay Packers, and later became a doctor. Pete played football for Notre Dame and the Baltimore Colts. Mike left home to escape the Depression and later tried brewing bootleg gin during Prohibition with John's help. The family even mixed with famous personalities, including Jack Dempsey, Frank Sinatra, and Vince Lombardi.

Despite hardships during the 1930s, Sugarhouse Pete: An American Family Story provides an inside look at how one family dealt with the harsh circumstances of the cruelest economic period in U.S. history. This classic American tale is filled with excitement and optimism, heartache and joy, humor and laughter.

A Higher Form of Killing opens with the first devastating battlefield use of lethal gas in World War I, and then investigates the stockpiling of biological weapons during World War II and in the decades afterward as well as the inhuman experiments con-ducted to test their effectiveness. This updated edition includes a new Introduction and a new final chapter exposing frightening developments in recent years, including the black market that emerged in chemical and biological weapons following the breakup of the Soviet Union, the acquisition of these weapons by various Third World states, the attempts of countries such as Iraq to build up arsenals, and--particularly and most recently--the use of these weapons in terrorist attacks.

5 out of 5 stars A Higher Form of Killing.......2006-08-17

Terrorism thrives on fear and imagination in designing weapons of mass destruction to inflict the most damage and death. Massive planes flown into prominent symbols of American pride, bomb-laden trucks exploding in front of U.S. embassies or Marine Corps barracks, explosive charges on a small boat rammed into a United States warship, these are the events that come to mind when one envisions terrorist attacks. Chemical and biological warfare seem an improbable choice for terrorists to use due to inability to procure materials or test for reliability. Or is it?

A Higher Form of Killing offers another area for terror to grasp hold. Dubbed the "The best account of gas and germ warfare available" by the Washington Post, A Higher Form of Killing presents the history of chemical and biological warfare through several first hand accounts as well as declassified documents that grimly describe its effects. Concentrating primarily on the UK-U.S. relationship developed out of World War One continuing through to today, authors Harris and Paxman shed light on several bio/chem warfare programs developed including releasing "inert" gases over populous cities to see how far the gases would penetrate, full blown experiments using live germs and gases over deserted islands, CIA experiments using prostitutes who administered bio drugs into unsuspecting clients and many more. With several research facilities conducting experiments throughout the western world, germ and gas warfare is a mature industry capable of producing and delivering a crippling blow if employed in a devilish manner.

A Higher Form of Killing is a must read for anyone wishing to learn more about the history of bio/chem warfare and for those who dare dream of its future if these deadly weapons were possessed by terrorists; however, it is NOT recommended for those with a weak stomach (graphic descriptions and pictures of physical effects from weapons in this book).

A Higher Form of Killing was written in 1981 and thus is a bit outdated; however a revised edition was released in 2002 (still outdated).

5 out of 5 stars An interesting read.......2003-12-22

This books delivers a history of chemical weaponry from the First World War. A good insight into their uses and effects as recorded by actual use in war. This is also a frightening insight into what possibly could happen should a rogue state/terrorist were able to build these weapons.

5 out of 5 stars Great, but dated information.......2003-04-03

This is an outstanding book that outlines the history of chemical warfare through the 1980s. It's an outstanding text and one that was in everyone's personal library when I was a student at the Army Chemical School.

Buy it and understand the storied past of our most frightful weapons.

                              Book Description

4 out of 5 stars A Good Amount of Detail.......2002-04-06

This book is a little dry and at this time somewhat dated. There is a renewed focus on this topic now so it is worth a review if you have the time. The book does not suffer from a lack of detail or facts, and it does seem to be well researched. What interested me the most was the scale of the governments ever increasing efforts to find new ways to kill the enemy. If you a looking for a historical overview of this topic, then this book fits the bill.

                              3 out of 5 stars Uncomfortable knowledge.......2002-02-21

A Higher Form of Killing first came out back in the early '80s before its authors had risen to the pre-eminent position they now occupy. As a straightforward collation of facts concerning the NBC policies of various countries, (with the UK and USA to the fore possibly because their archives were easiest to access), it is very well researched. The early stages of chemical warfare are presented in the whimsical way they evolved. The book really hits its stride with the coverage of nation's efforts during WWII. What boggles the mind most is the scale of Britain's efforts to mount a strategic anthrax bombing campaign and how little we have heard of it elsewhere. Is Enigma really the be all and end all of hidden history? The next meaty section deals with the American's work with the MKULTRA project and the use of LSD. Most of these facts have now merged into X-Files/MIB/Majestic folk-lore but here they are llllllonnng before conspiracy theories became fashionable.

Now, the account of trials to spread NBC agents round cities using mass transit systems, and how to prevent this, (you can't), have a terrible currency. The book should be revised and brought up to date because when it was published NBC warfare in the Persian Gulf was only just becoming public knowledge. Saddam Hussain's atrocity against the people of Halabja had yet to happen. There is a lot more information available today about the NBC industry behind the Iron Curtain but it is still a shadowy area. The horrid pictures and illustrations of the effects of NBC agents on people should help persuade those who quibble over efforts to stop their proliferation, to shut up.
Reading this book gives the reader a portent of the events that will surely befall us soon. It is not going to be nice.

This historical revue starts with the scandal of the small pox infected blankets deliberately sent to Indian Reservations & continues to various other events down to the AIDS virus being(mid-70') developed in government lab for possible use in population control. When I tried to buy this book at a large book store, I was told all the copies had been purchased the day before by a couple of guys in black suits. Mmmmm...
