Nice Resource.......2007-08-26
A good resource. I like to use it in conjunction with a Planosphere. I have not explored every "sample" in the book yet, but in general it is a good book to use and allows you to explore the heavens.
Celestial Sampler.......2007-02-14
It is always a joy to receive my Sky and Telescope and NightSky (now deceased) magazines and open them up to Sue's columns to see what new celestial wonders await. This book is a compilation of her articles written over the years in a style that is entertaining, informative and not so technical that a novice like me can easily follow. Her introduction is a colorfully illustrated lesson on general astronomy with monthly sky charts, viewing tips and her personal approach to our science.
The book takes you month by month beginning with January`s wintry delights. Each of the objects discussed are illustrated by star charts and photographs clearly identifying each target and how to find it. This includes a chart listing the object, type, magnitude, distance, RA and DEC. The text is a delightful mixture of fact and myth. What you can expect to see is vividly described with various telescopes, apertures and magnification powers and her own personal observations. Whether your interests are in stars, planets, or deep space objects, there is something for everyone to enjoy and learn. I can't wait for her next edition of Celestial Sampler to be published!
Jack Fox, Richmond Astronomical Society
The Joy of a Small Telescope.......2007-01-18
This book is compiled from Sue's older "Small Scope Sampler" column, which, as the title implies, emphasizes brighter targets, but also makes a point of describing the surprising things you can do with a small telescope if it's used with care beneath a reasonably dark sky. In this way she encourages those who are not equipped with gigantic instruments to go out and enjoy the many, many wonderful sights available to decent small telescopes. Sue's skills as a visual observer are equal to anyone's. Her writing is fluid and unpretentious. Her object selection covers all the bases.
For the past few years, Sue's column has been renamed "Deep Sky Wonders" in honor of an old tradition at Sky & Telescope magazine. Her next compilation will probably be drawn from these, and will feature more targets suitable only for larger scopes. Yet Sue still loves her 4" scope the most, and it still shows even in these later columns.
Great Compilation.......2007-01-11
I really enjoy Sue's monthly column in S&T - this collection is geat!
Well laid out, and much easier to use without the ads S&T spaces in the monthly articles =-)
Her style, prose, and eagle eye's are unparalled - you'll enjoy this book and her star tours!
An Excellent Compilation.......2006-06-15
Celestial Sampler is a conglomeration of Sue French's "Small Scope Sampler" articles that appear in Sky & Telescope magazine each month. It collects 60 installments since its July of '99 introduction. Each article guides the reader through a half dozen or so objects to look at that are nearby one another, so star hopping from one to the other is easy.
The articles are helpful in that they highlight inconspicuous things to look at, such as random NGC objects, and obscure double stars, while visiting old favorites, like the Messier objects. As such, the book is best suited for beginner-to-intermediate level observers who have tackled the major objects out there (M42, M57, etc.), and are looking for something more to look at.
Each article includes a list of around 5-15 objects, a few photos, and a finder chart that plots all of the objects, with stars down to about mag 7-9. The finder charts closely resemble what you'd find in Sky Atlas 2000.
The text of each star hop briefly describes how best to find each object, and a description of the object itself. Frequently each object is described under multiple apertures, though her 4-inch aperture is her "workhorse" scope, and gets the most descriptions. Each object is listed in bold, so finding a description for something is quick and easy.
Overall, this is an excellent guide to finding some more "off the beaten path" stuff that's out there. Even if you already have the S&T issues in which these articles have been published, the book serves as an excellent field companion, since it is well-printed, and glossy, so dew won't be a problem. Recommended.

Book Description
Professor Argyle Giles Yardley teaches at Brentley College for Women in Val de Ries, Vermont. He accepts playwright-director Sally Venture's invitation to appear in Precarious Global Incandescence, a serious play. Rehearsals go badly; the play becomes a musical, and he's asked to play showgirl, Grandilee. He agrees only because he's determined to win the hands, feet and all the rest of young Sally. Professor Yardley suddenly finds himself with characters like wardrobe mistress, Fishbone Mary, eleven-year-old tap dancer, Weesily Sam, and property master-actor, Kimberly Cain. "Call me Cain because I'm Able." He is confronted by major crises caused by the mounting of an amateur theatrical production and the fact that he's getting older. He counteracts this with magical powers of Glenyiddish Scotch Whisky. As one reader put it, "Precarious Global Incandescence is a roller coaster ride and a jolly good show."
Customer Reviews:
Precarious Global Incandescence.......2005-03-19
A wonderful romp through the trials and tripulations of an amature theatrical performance. Professor Argyle Giles Yardley manages to "Switch Roles" and become Grandilee inbetween trying to balance various relationships. You know what they say in the theater - "Break a Leg!" And Giles comes pretty close to doing just that. I loved the book and recommend it for anyone who loves the smell of grease paint and trials of the theater or who just enjoys a good story.
Book Description
Two centuries ago, the ostensibly pacifist president Thomas Jefferson launched America's first war on foreign soila war against terror. The enemy was Muslim; the war was waged unconventionally, with commandos, native troops, encrypted intelligence, and foreign bases under short-term alliances. For nearly two hundred years, Barbary pirates had haunted the Mediterranean, enslaving infidels and extorting millions of dollars from European countries in a holy war against Christendom. Newly independent, American ships became a target of piracy. Instead of paying tribute, after his inauguration Jefferson chose to fight. With telling illustrations, Jefferson's War traces the events surrounding his resolute belief that peace with the Barbary States, and the attainment of Europe's respect, could be gained only through the "medium of war." Jefferson ordered the new U.S. Navy to Tripoli in 1801, starting the Barbary War that ended in 1805. The war proved that ship-for-ship the U.S. Navy was the equal of any navy afloat. William Eaton's bold frontal assault on Derna with a fractious army of Arabs, disaffected Tripolitans, European mercenaries, and eight U.S. Marines punctuated the American victory as the marines ran up the Stars and Stripes over the citythe first flag-raising on hostile shores by U.S. troops.
Customer Reviews:
A competent and detailed account of a largely forgotten war.......2007-01-16
This book competently highlights "America's first global war on terror." It is the fascinating story of America's early interaction and conflict with the Barbary states in North Africa. It is a complex story that contains the whole range of diplomacy and war; courage and cowardice; brilliance and incompetence. A brief synopsis of the events covered can be found in the publisher's blurb above, and need not be repeated here. This review will serve mainly to highlight strengths and weakness of the work. The author tells the story very well but perhaps with a few too many tangents and largely irrelevant details and stories as well as the rather annoying habit of making somewhat forced comparisons between the situation at the start of the 1800s and today.
First the author has a lovely narrative flow that is perhaps necessarily hindered by a superabundance of names and places. This may well be the nature of the beast as there were four Barbary States, each with its own Deii, Bey, Pasha, Sultan, or Emperor let alone the other regional powers which will include many that the layman may find unfamiliar. Unless you have previously studied the Napoleonic Mediterranean, you may find it useful to keep a small cheat-sheet on your bookmark and a small map handy. However, this is not a serious hindrance to the serious reader.
More annoying is the author's tendency to "period hop." That is to say that he has decided to structure his work only in the most loose chronological format. Mostly he wants to follow people and places. At times this makes for a disjointed narrative. Additionally, and perhaps because of this, he also has a tendency to repeat himself. At times one can be grateful for the reminder, while at others it is annoying and slightly insulting.
Another problem with the narrative is the author's desire to tell you EVERYTHING about many of the main players. For example, in tracking the unhappy life of a US Marine officer after the events at the heart of the book he consumes a surprising number of pages when most readers would be satisfied with a simple "he became increasingly embittered and died in near disgrace." A fair bit of judicial "skimming" is indicated here.
The final issue I have with this generally good book is the Author's desire to make comparisons to the current Global War on Terror. In many cases, the comparisons are worthy and real, however, in the vast majority they are either: 1) Obvious, eliciting a "Duhhh, I could see that myself before the blinding flash of the obvious" response; 2) needling and insignificant or 3) rather forced. In a well written history, the comparisons to modern times should be self evident to the reasonably educated reader. Pointing them out seems akin to having to explain the punch line of a joke, either unnecessary or simply pointing out the inadequacy of the joke.
All that said, these are relatively minor criticisms of a well researched book. It is a very comprehensive coverage of America's first major foreign adventure and first war against an Islamic power. This is probably one of the three books I would recommend for anyone making a study of the Early US Navy and foreign policy. The other two, FYI are Barbara Tuchman's "The First Salute" and a book of the first few naval wars in American History entitled "Six Frigates".
Jefferson's War is a comprehensive and interesting account full of detail (although sometimes too much detail) of America's first "war on terror" from the halls of Washington to the Shores of Tripoli.
Readable account of America trying (literally) to get its sea legs.......2005-12-07
Joseph Wheelan tackles the story of America fighting (occasionally) a war in the early 19th Century against Tripoli for its habit of attacking U.S. shipping in the Mediterranean, taking the ships for its own, and making slaves out of the crews - your basic piracy.
The writing itself is fairly average, but the book is worth reading for a couple of reasons. First, it's fascinating to focus in on a time when the U.S. was not the biggest kid on the block and didn't have its military house in order. Two thirds of the time, there was little to nothing you could point to with pride as an American. Three of the four U.S. Naval commanders over the course of the war seemed to take the assignment more as an Italian holiday than as a war.
Second, it's wonderful to learn about the individuals who did step up and begin to form the framework of a Navy that would hold its own quite admirably just a few years later against the British Navy in the War of 1812. The historic gems in the book are great, too. The 14 towns of Decatur in the U.S. are named after a naval hero from this war and the first ever U.S. military force to land on foreign soil did so in this war (Shores of Tripoli ring any bells?).
Overall, this one is worth a read for any fan of history.
Eloquent history for the adventurous laymen.......2005-11-30
Joseph Wheelan's book, "Jefferson's War" is an exciting narrative about America's first war against Islam. There are pitifully few books on this topic and fewer still that are this readable.
Wheelan discusses the dangers America faced in its first few decades, the complexity of Jefferson's character, and how diplomacy was carried out in the early 19th century. Wheelan, with a broad stroke, makes the comparison that America's current war on terror is similar to this war against tribute. I doubt anyone will buy it. Those who denounce this book because of this would further aggravate the difficulty of obtaining books on this time period.
This book at times shows solid research-but is not a scholarly work. Its accessibility is the best reason to praise it.
If you're interested in early America, Thomas Jefferson, or simply want to read to read an adventure book that is true, this book is for you. If you want a scholarly work on this subject, then you may have to wait indefinitely.
Standing up to pirates.......2005-10-16
Wheelan is a journalist who has written a "popular" history of the US war against the Barbary Pirates in the early 19th century. It is a straightforward, non-Academic narrative history that provides context and describes the war against, primarily, Tripoli. He points out that after the Europeans had spent hundreds of years bribing and placating these north African Muslims, the US refused to play the game. At first, due to a lack of resources and the fact that the US was a confederation with a powerless central government, it had to pay tribute. However, after the central government was given the right to levy taxes, one of the first things it did was raise a Navy, and the primary threat was the Barbary Coast. One of Jefferson's first actions as president was to send the Navy in harms way. Although the first two Navy commanders were too timid for the mission, Preeble put teeth to the threat. Later, an overland expedition led by former Army officer William Eaton drove Tripoli to sue for peace. Of note are the similarities between the way today's Islamic terrorists behave when compared to the Islamic pirates of the time.
Good book, worth reading.......2005-05-10
No long-winded review, just praise for a book I enjoyed. The author illuminated a part of American history I knew little about and I'm pleased I read the book and learned from it. I recommend it.

"Boxers or Briefs?" has become a political litmus test for presidential candidates, but what does the answer really tell us? Quite a lot, argue Elaine Benson and John Esten in Unmentionables: A Brief History of Underwear. The question posed to Bill Clinton in 1992 may seem silly, but undergarments have a distinctly political part to play in history. During the women's movement, it was not effegies of men that women burnt, but bras, a daily reminder of difference--if not inequality. The history of underwear is an exposition that marks out the roles of culture and nature, the position of women, and the American love affair with the T-shirt. This thoroughly illustrated volume covers all, from the first fig leaf to the newest Fruit of the Looms and from bloomers to panties, revealing a side of humanity not often seen in public.
Customer Reviews:
BEST BOOK EVER.......2004-01-27
I thought when I read Don Quixote by Cervantes that I'd read the best book ever written. Then I happened upon Tolstoy's War and Peace, and I thought no reading experience could ever compare. THEN, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I FOUND IT: Elaine Benson's matchless "Unmentionables: a Brief History of Underwear." The pun in the title was divine! I thought the book could never live up to its wonderfully witty title! BUT, GENTLE AUDIENCE, IT DID. And more. The title is the least enjoyable part of the book! It is terrific! Witty and informative! Truly a masterpiece to rank with the great books of the millenium.
unmentionables.......2002-01-30
fabulous overview of the history of undergarments, both male and female. delightful photographs and artwork, as well as readability. i am happy to have purchased this book
Not worth its salt.......2000-04-08
This book told me nothing I didn't already know. Wow, they wore CORSETS in the 19th century! Gosh, what a revelation! Actually, there was a good deal of information packed into the 72 pages, except most of it was information I already knew from my experience as a seamstress and historical connesieur. The pictures, while interesting, were uninspiring and singularly unhelpful, although that was a function of layout more than visual choice: all of the pictures are grouped at the ends of the chapters instead of scattered throughout the text (preferably next to their descriptions). In other cases, there aren't even appropriate pictures for visualization purposes. For instance, Benson talks about various undergarments such as farthingales and bustles and paniers, but there are no pictures of even the full outfit to give you an idea of what might be worn underneath. Benson talks fancy and seems to be excellent at telling you that she doesn't know a heck of a lot more than you do -- except that she's the expert.
Cute but overpriced.......1999-08-08
There is not much to this book-it is just delightful fluff-but I enjoyed it immensely!
The best book ever.......1998-10-10
I bought this book after seeing Mrs. Benson being interviewed on national television and I just had to get it. After picking up the book I was unable to put it down. It was amazing to think that the book could be so enriched with information about what most people think to be a silly subject. The book has both text and pictures, making an absolute joy to read. I was crushed when I read Mrs. Benson's obituary in the New York Times on Sunday, October 4th 1998. I find it amazing that a 70 year old woman could write a book about underwear of all things. I recommend this book for anybody who likes to read at all. I have bought around 15 copies to give to friends and family, seeing as that it makes a perfect gift. I also have one on every coffee table in my house. I strongly suggest that you buy this book ASAP!!!
