5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-06-30

Author Jeff Madura provides an excellent short guide through the perilous territory of financial statement analysis. Wasting no words, he presents all the average individual investor absolutely needs to know about corporate financial reports. He tells you why you shouldn't trust them, and then shows you how to apply a skeptic's perspective to figuring out what reported numbers really mean. The market for investment books is a crowded one, but this is a standout: a thoroughgoing and systematic combination of curiosity, knowledge and prudent suspicion. We highly recommend this book to all investors. Before you climb into the investors' ring, carefully consider the advice that referees give boxers before a bout: Protect yourself at all times.

        Book Description

As recently as 1990 policymakers and academics believed widely that all that was needed for dramatic increases in prosperity in transitional economies was to roll back the state. The arguments in this book present an articulate antidote to that assertion: While the state must withdraw from many activities involving direct production and exchange, it must provide good laws and enforce them for economies to prosper. In one chapter, Robert Summers brilliantly exposes the complexity of this requirement, listing eighteen minimum conditions for the creation of the rule of law. Other chapters describe the benefits of good commercial law on economic growth, the political foundations of American commercial law, how poor governance led to the Asian financial crisis, the institutional requirements for environmental markets, and constitutional structures that lead to efficient government.
The contributors, renowned experts in their fields on the complex institutional requirements for prosperity, offer arguments from economic theory, economic history, legal theory, and political science. The chapters are simultaneously of high scholarly quality and intensely applicable. Indeed many of the ideas here are being used to design reform projects in developing countries.
Market-Augmenting Government will appeal to legal theorists, economists, and political scientists, and in particular to institutional economists. Its writing is friendly to the general reader, with only a few of the chapters requiring specialized knowledge. The book will also figure importantly in policy circles as governance moves center stage in the practice of reform and development.

          Book Description

Don't go to class without it! LABORATORY INQUIRY IN CHEMISTRY teaches you the skills you need to easily complete your laboratory investigations. Each investigation begins with a scenario that puts a real-life spin on the problem at hand, provides you with a sense of why the project is relevant, and creates a scenario that is comparable to what chemists face in the real world. Completing experiments is easy with a list of goals, materials, reagents, guidelines, and hints found at the beginning of each investigation.

I had to buy this book for a class, it's not something I selected on my own. My chemistry lab was terrible, easily one of the worst classes I ever had at PSU (the class itself was easy, the problem was how retarded and unorganized the class structure was). Because the lab was so terrible, I don't think I can give a fair review to this work because I associate it with the WORST LAB EVER. The price for this cheaply produced soft cover book is way too high, but that is most textbooks. Avoid this book if you can, but you're probably like me and have no choice in the textbooks you must buy for class, so buy it used if you can find it, because as soon as class is over the only thing it will be good for it starting a fire or that day you run out of toilet paper.

          Book Description

Students taught with inquiry-based methods have been shown to make significant progress in their ability to formulate hypotheses, make proper assumptions, design and execute investigations, understand variables, record data, and synthesize new knowledge. The inquiry-based approach encourages curiosity and openness, and fosters a stronger sense of responsibility and satisfaction in the students who are taught with it. This text presents a series of experiments that are intended to serve as the solid basis for a first-year chemistry or physical sciences course, using an inquiry based approach. Each chapter provides: 1)instructions for an experiment; 2) teachers notes that give the instructor more in-depth information about the technical nature and intellectual objectives of the experiment; and 3) a sample lab report that provides representative data and lists a composite of sources of typical errors.

3 out of 5 stars Inquiry-based, but not connected to real life problems.......2006-05-26

The strength of this book is that it lays out 35 detailed Chemistry experiments that are not cookbook labs. It has concrete examples of how to have students design their own procedures to solve a problem. When I first started reading the book I was very excited and thought I would definately use it. The farther I read though, the more disappointed I got that the labs do not include real-life connections. Most students are not inherently interested in "Calculating the Heat of Solution," but could become more engaged if the author made a connection between each topic and a real-life problem. I think that a book that is far superior is "Teaching Inquiry-Based Chemistry," by Gallagher-Bolos and Smithenry. It really explains how to get the students engaged in real-life inquiry-based problem solving and describes how to get them to do it as a community of learners.

          5 out of 5 stars 35 Great Labs.......2004-07-28

I'm a third year science teacher and just wanted a break from reinventing the wheel. This book has 35 great labs that are designed to get the students to think and also get them to understand the content too. These are not cook book labs which was exactly what I was looking for. There are thought provoking questions provided and a sample lab write-up with sample data for each experiment. Also the author includes additional suggestions, common misconceptions and safety information. If you want a book with ready to use labs that are inquiry-based, this is a great find.

The use of the laboratory is a valuable tool in developing a deeper understanding of key chemical concepts from the experimental process. This lab manual encourages scientific thinking, enabling readers to conduct investigations in chemistry. It shows how to think about the processes they are investigating rather than simply performing a laboratory experiment to the specifications set by the manual. Each experiment begins with a problem scenario and ends with questions requiring feedback on the problem.

The focus of the manual is on conceptual learning of the chemical phenomena in our lives. The manual employs the learning cycle approach, which is used as the underlying model for the guided and open inquiry/application laboratories. The learning cycle is derived from learning theory, is consistent with the nature of science, and has three sequential phases: 1) exploring/gathering data; 2) discussion/concept invention; 3) expansion/application.

The Lab book is the amost ambiguous piece of material ever written to mankind. I dont suggest any Chemistry student to use this book if he wants to still enjoy the subject. With this book I've grown a strong disliking for Chemistry Lab. The book provides no clear instructions for the procedures and therefore makes lab confusing and frustrating. A WASTE OF MONEY

When Philip Morse was promoted to Professor Emeritus of Physics at M.I.T. in 1969, he already had behind him at least three full professional careers--in Quantum physics, in acoustics, and in what Julius Stratton calls "the reduction of theory to numerically useful results," a general field of which Morse was a founder and for which no good term yet exists, that includes operations research, machine computation, and systems analysis. This volume contains papers in all these fields, written by Professor Morse's students and colleagues. By their presence here, they gratefully testify to the influence that Philip Morse has had on their work and, in many cases, on their lives.

                              Book Description

Combining hardware and personnel, design and operations, a former U.S. Air Force pilot and aviation historian focuses on the one clear American victory of the Korean War, the jet fighter battle between the F-86 and the MiG-15. Kenneth P. Werrell explains how, despite being outnumbered, the USAF won air superiority in Korea with an aircraft that was initially inferior to its opponent. His book examines the Sabre's design and development, its combat service, and efforts to improve its performance. In addition to describing the difficulties encountered with the aircraft, he details the problems with rules of engagement, friendly fire, and personnel. He shows how numerous Air Force pilots, including almost all the aces, abetted by their leaders, violated restrictions and engaged and destroyed MiGs over China.

Werrell is first to take such an indepth look at the F-86, its pilots and operations, in this the first jet versus jet war. One of the few bright spots in the "forgotten war," it is the story of how an outnumbered force, flying an aircraft at the limits of its range, decisively defeated its foe. The author attributes the undisputed aerial victory—the U.S. claimed an eight-to-one air-to-air victory-to-loss ratio—to the skill and aggressiveness of the American pilots, a mixture of World War II veterans and recently trained young men. The winning and retention of air superiority gave UN forces a critical edge in the war, allowing them to fight without fear of air attack while the communists were battered by air power. The study is based on the latest scholarship, including a number of previously untapped sources, and interviews with Sabre pilots.

4 out of 5 stars Not really slashing Sabres, but highly interesting!.......2006-11-06

Sabres Over MiG Alley by Dr. Kenneth P. Werrell tells the story of the F-86 Sabre against the MiG-15 in the skys over North Korea. However rather than focusing on the men and the combats from unit histories, Mr. Werrell approached this from a slightly different approach; first focusing on the technical development of the Sabre and it's technical comparison to the MiG-15, then focusing on the men in general, finally focusing on the specifics of individual pilots. By looking at the air war this way we get a good feeling for how well the two combatants compared (especially the part where Dr. Werrell tells us about flying the captured MiG-15) with some descriptions of how the individual pilots flew. In going over the non-combat aspects, Dr. Werrell has sections that focus on such things as; Efforts to Improve Performance; Maintenance: Unappreciated but Vital; F-86 Flying Safety; and Friendly Islands and Rescue Service. Btw, in addition to a pretty nice section on individual pilots, there's several small sections on the general air war over Korea. Supporting content wise there are some excellent pictures but no technical drawings or maps showing where the airbases were or where the battle occurred.

Given this, how do I rate this book... a more complex answer than one might expect. Technically it's a 5 star book. Dr. Werrell does an outstanding job telling about the development and evolution of the Sabre. The stories of the individual pilots is worthy of 4-4.5 stars, but the general air war over Korea is rather weak and only worthy of 2.5 stars. Given all of this and my personal focus's I can only give this book 4 Stars. I really wanted to give it more than that because of the development history of the Sabre, but I was looking to get more about how the Sabre was used, how engagements developed between Sabres and MiG's and maybe something more on the use of Eastern Block aviators.

5 out of 5 stars The Definite Account of the First Jet vs. Jet War.......2005-07-19

The Korean War began with the Americans sending P-51 and P-80 fighters to support the B-29 bombers. It was a surprise to find that they were being met with MIG-15's. The not-quite-ready F-86 was rushed over to meet the challenge, and meet it it did.

Overall the American pilots achieved a 8 to 1 kill ratio. (Subsequent information from the Soviet Union says that up against the few Russian pilots that were volunteers to the North Korean Air Force held the Americans to about a one to one ratio.) The plane was obviously a great improvement over what went before, and the training of the pilots significantly better.

This book is the story of the F-86's that flew in Korea. It is probably going to remain as the definitive book on the subject. The book depends a lot on conversations with men who flew the planes, and as this was now over fifty years ago, the number of remaining pilots is rapidly declining.

This book is the complete history of the Sabers, including the down sides such points as inadequate armaments (six .50 calibers) and friendly fire. It of course also includes the good side, with the story of all the Aces that came out of the war.

This book reminded me of the biographies on Roberto Clemente and Teddy Roosevelt that I used to pick up in elementary school, but with slightly more technical subject matter. There are some interesting stories about Delbruck's life and discoveries, but these are written in a juvenile manner and the book does not live up to its title - very little discussion of the impact of molecular biology on other scientific fields or society in general is provided. The important experiments of Delbruck, Luria, and others are also described poorly. There are much better books on the origins of molecular biology. For some fun, hagiographic info on Delbruck this might work - for anything more, it won't.
