5 out of 5 stars CPA Focus Notes.......2005-11-23

I would not have passed the CPA exam without Mark Edward's Focus Notes. They were invaluable.

I wish he would do Focus Notes for the CMA exam.

3 out of 5 stars Good notes, not updated for current CPA Exams........2002-10-14

These focus notes are very useful to get the core concepts to pass the CPA, and in my opinion would relieve the "too much information" problem in the Wiley CPA books series.

In my opinion, these focus notes will be more useful if combined with another text book. Perhaps the Wiley CPA books series have the advantage of faster cross referencing, since they have the same module division.

If you are a Beckerconviser student, I would recommend that you buy their flash cards...(yes they started selling their own flash cards to their students in fall 2002).

One last note, if you are buying the second edition of the focus notes and using them to attend coming CPA exams,BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT UPDATED!!!.
Examples of outdated notes in the financial accounting and reporting section are:
1. in the Intangible assets section (40 years is not any more the maximum useful life for intangible assets), and
2. the treatment of discontinued operations in the financials.

I gave it a 3 stars score because of the update issue.

4 out of 5 stars Business Law Focus Notes.......2001-05-09

I used the Focus Notes to assist in preparing for the May 2001 Business Law portion of the CPA exam. I made additional notes on the Focus Notes as I read my textbook and as I completed practice exams. I felt I saved a lot of time I might have wasted making my own flash cards, and the logical format of the Focus Notes helped to clarify the information for me.

I felt great after I completed the exam, and I highly recommend the Business Law Focus Notes as part of your studying.

      Book Description

This new edition of the authoritative English-language treatment of Islamic personal status law gives practitioners and courts throughout the world direct access to this important body of law in its most up-to-date development. All Middle Eastern and North African Arab states are covered; new to this edition is coverage of recent provisions enacted in Kuwait, Yemen, and Sudan. The chapter on dissolution of marriage has been completely revised to reflect current legal interpretation and judicial practice in this rapidly changing area of Islamic law. Also new and especially valuable are English versions, for the first time anywhere, of fundamental Shiite and Jaafari legal works with the most thorough analysis and commentary available in any non-Arabic source.

Dr. Nasir's much-appreciated methodology has been continued since the very successful first edition of 1986. For each topic - e.g., marriage, dower, dissolution of marriage, parentage, inheritance, and waqf - he begins with a consideration of the subject in Sharia law, and then goes on to present legislation and contemporary views, in particular Arab countries. This approach, while it clearly manifests the continuity of Islamic law respecting personal status, is of great practical value to judges and practitioners, especially those who must resolve disputes under Islamic law in non-Muslim countries.

      Book Description

FROM THE REVIEWS: ¿Webb offers coherent, understandable, and sometimes humorous coverage of a diverse range of topics. He provides readers with non-trivial insights into research fields they may not have encountered previously . . . I think everyone who has ever considered the possibility that other intelligent civilizations exist elsewhere within our galaxy will enjoy Where Is Everybody? They will find much to agree with, and much to argue about, in this very accessible volume.¿ ¿SCIENCE During a Los Alamos lunchtime conversation that took place more than 50 years ago, four world-class scientists agreed, given the size and age of the Universe, that advanced extraterrestrial civilizations simply had to exist. The sheer numbers demanded it. But one of the four, the renowned physicist and back-of-the-envelope calculator Enrico Fermi, asked the telling question: If the extraterrestrial life proposition is true, he wondered, "Where IS everybody?" In this lively and thought-provoking book, Stephen Webb presents a detailed discussion of the 50 most cogent and intriguing answers to Fermi's famous question, divided into three distinct groups: - Aliens are already here among us. Here are answers ranging from Leo Szilard's suggestion that they are already here, and we know them as Hungarians, to the theorists who claim that aliens built Stonehenge and the Easter Island statues. - Aliens exist, but have not yet communicated. The theories in this camp range widely, from those who believe we simply don't have the technologies to receive their signals, to those who believe the enormities of space and time work against communication, to those who believe they're hiding from us. - Aliens do not exist. Here are the doubters' arguments, from the Rare Earth theory to the author's own closely argued and cogently stated skepticism. The proposed solutions run the gamut from the crackpot to the highly serious, but all deserve our consideration. The varieties of arguments -- from first-rate scientists, philosophers and historians, and science fiction authors -- turn out to be astonishing, entertaining, and vigorous intellectual exercises for any reader interested in science and the sheer pleasure of speculative thinking. Stephen Webb is a physicist working at the Open University in England and the author of Measuring the Universe.

      4 out of 5 stars 50 answers to a very good question.......2007-08-10

This fine book by Stephen Webb offers fifty different solutions for the Fermi paradox. In short, Enrico Fermi wondered that since universe is so big and should contain lots of life, where are they? Why haven't we seen any evidence at all of extraterrestrial intelligence?

Well, there are plenty of good explanations, as this book proves. The solutions are divided in three categories: "they're already here," "they exist but we can't communicate with them," and "we're alone". Since there's a real lack of proper knowledge about these things, reader will find plenty of educated guesses, hazy probabilities and that sort of thinking, but that's the nature of the whole question.

I'd definitely recommend this book to anybody who's interested in the existence or non-existence of extraterrestrial life. While there are no set answers, this book will give the reader a lot of material to chew on. (Review based on the Finnish translation.)

4 out of 5 stars If a tree falls and no one hears it, does it make a noise?.......2007-05-15

Fermi gets all the credit from his own community for apparently making an observation nobody else had. However, that Fermi was the first to ask "Where is everybody?" is hardly proven, and really not worth the effort, brief though it was, that the author makes to paint Fermi as some sort of Second Coming. Fermi was good, but I doubt he was the first or only person to have thought about this "paradox" that now carries his name.

While full of science nuggets and amusing discussion, this book fails to prove anything, and or nothing, at the same time. As it should be.

Judging whether or not other life exists in the universe simply on the basis that WE haven't found it or been visited by it - YET - is hardly the science of Fermi and his colleagues.

So don't look to this as some sort of final decision on the existence of ET, you will be disappointed. It is as advertised: A collection of solutions to the Fermi's paradox, and the arguments for and against them.

Should provoke some great water cooler, fireside, morning commute in the car discussions.

      5 out of 5 stars chemistry.......2007-01-02

for anyone who has ever wondered "Where is everybody?" this book is for you. Stephen Webb explains Fermi's Paradox of extraterrestrial life and offers 50 solutions to it, including his own. this book may appear to be long at first glance, but reading it is no work at all. the main premise of the book, as evident by the title, is "are we alone in the universe?". webb tackles this subject head-on, dedicating about at least 2 pages per solution. he explains the technology and philosophy behind each solution in easy, non-sophisticated, terms so any average joe can read this book without any prior knowledge of technology such as gamma rays or math like Drake's equation. overall this book was highly fascinating and stimulates the reader into really considering each solution to the question "where is everybody?". not only is this book interesting and intelligent, but there are over 200 notes and recommended readings, so if there is a subject you become very interested in, the information to find more about it is right in the back of the book.

5 out of 5 stars You can't judge a book by its cover.......2006-12-12

Initially, I assumed that WHERE IS EVERYBODY was a light, humorous little account of Fermi's paradox, a generalized description of the problem with humorous asides. My view was shaped by the cover art - a flying saucer with little green men whizzing by Earth. I could not have been more wrong since it is an extremely serious discussion on why we still have no evidence of extra-terrestrial intelligent life.

The author, who also wrote the excellent "Measuring the Universe" lists 49 solutions to why we have not heard from nor seen any evidence that ETCs (extra-terrestrial civilizations) exist. He then offers a final solution himself. The arguments fall into one of three categories: They are here, They exist but have not communicated or They do not exist. They range from the practical (#16 - They are Signalling but we do not know how to listen" to the silly (#1 -They are here and Call themselves Hungarians) to the chilling (#22 - Berserkers) to the thoughtful (#28 - They hit the Singularity).

The mood shifts as one reads and the reasons begins to mount. At first the author appears hopeful, positive, expectant but as the reader goes further the tone becomes doubtful if not hopeless. There are many practical reasons why we could have missed them and these are covered. If they do exist (extremely unlikely in my view) the most likely reason is that they are so technologically advanced that communication is impossible. Just a few hundred years ago smoke signals were a means to signal. Only a few decades ago computer tapes, VHS, LP records were the height of technology. The National Archives has a vast amount of data that cannot be referenced because the technology to read the data has vanished. Our ability to condense and send data grows at an exponential rate; we cannot imagine what a civilization a million years more advanced would do.

I am glad the author discussed cultural factors - a different mathematics or logic, the absence of language, the rise of science, the rarity of intelligence and toolmaking. Oddly, the idea of consciousness was only mentioned in passing. The author insists that the origin of life itself, non-living materials morphing to living creatures, may be a solitary occurrence. Repeatedly the author stresses the uniqueness of human beings and not just in the cosmos. On Earth, out of fifty billion species, we alone developed a true language, learned to use tools, invented a method for discovering the secrets of the universe.

The factors in the rise of humanity are (in my opinion) so random - the origin of life, the catastrophies that restarted evolution repeatedly, our huge moon, tectonics, the appearance of erukayote entities with defined bodies, our appearance at a stage when the planet was not hit with an asteroid - as to almost demand a cold, hard look at the probability that we are alone. The author offers the final and, in my opinion, the most logical, reason we have not heard from anyone: We are alone, at least in the galaxy. The old numbers game ("There are 400 billion stars therefore there must be intelligent life elsewhere") breaks down when one considers the incredible chain of events that led to the rise of our own species. Like any good scientist, he leaves the door open for a change of opinion. This is a though-provoking, provocative book that deserves attention. My grade - A

5 out of 5 stars a survey for the layman.......2006-08-15

This book provides an extensive survey of popular ideas relating to Fermi's paradox. It does not try to validate any one hypothesis, so if you're hoping to find justification for your personal beliefs you may be disappointed. The author has the difficult task of trying to present contradictory solutions in a reasonable manner. He offers his opinion on the merits of each proposal without being heavy-handed. The addition of a little humor doesn't detract from the seriousness of the topic.

It's a fair treatment. Were the book to dispassionately present each theory without comment, it would make for dry reading. The reader would have to weigh every premise without the benefit of the writer's knowledge and understanding. Instead, it provides a basis for you to make your own judgment. The critique is fair and reasonably unbiased. The book gives insight into scientific debate and shows how competing ideas about extraterrestrial civilizations have developed. It can be appreciated from that standpoint and not as promoting one particular view.

        Book Description

Advances in Quantum Chemistry presents surveys of current developments in this rapidly developing field that falls between the historically established areas of mathematics, physics, and chemistry. With invited reviews written by leading international researchers, as well as regular thematic issues, each volume presents new results and provides a single vehicle for following progress in this interdisciplinary area.

This volume is dedicated to Jens Oddershede, to celebrate his sixtieth birthday. As the title suggests he viewed quantum chemistry as an adventure and not a job. He is still an active participant in theoretical chemistry and presently among the most cited scientists at the University of Southern Denmark. He is perhaps best known for his success in developing the polarization propagator formalism and applying it to the calculation of various response properties of molecules.

The volume is made up of contributions from friends and collaborators, papers within the volume being sorted by when the contributor first published with Jens Oddershede rather than by subject matter.

This volume strives to give complete information about the main aspect of the stability behaviour of steel structures and their members. In following this objective, the volume presents a complete scientific background (profiting from the fact that the authors of the individual parts of the publication have personally been very active in the corresponding field of research for an extended period of time now), but also establishes recommendations, procedures and formulae for practical design. The significance of the volume may be seen in its challenging current concepts of stability analysis, encouraging progress in the field and thereby establishing an advanced basis for more reliable and economical design.

            Book Description

The book is devoted to the achievements of two complementary multispacecraft missions – INTERBALL and CLUSTER II. The advantages of these powerful instruments for magnetospheric investigations are clearly shown together with problems that were or should be overcome in the mission management and data processing and interpretation. The main goal of both missions is the investigation of coupling among different magnetospheric regions and, consequently, the core of the book deals with this topic. Nevertheless, various coupling processes are influenced by upstream conditions or triggered by solar wind or interplanetary magnetic field disturbances. The book also stresses the importance of the solar wind input on magnetospheric processes. The Editors of the book hope that it will be useful for scientists involved in Solar – Terrestrial relations or Space Weather programs as well as for students of space or plasma physics. The book surveys of present knowledge and puts it into context of the latest results of aforementioned missions. Since the book treats not only achievements but the problems of multispacecraft observations as well, it can serve as a tool for the planning of further missions.

His roommate's a porn-star, his co-workers can't decide if they're working a job or doing a stint at summer camp, and no one knows a slang term for nipple's that's about as hard as life gets for Driftwood Dan. He works the western tourist trade, and if times get tough, he packs up his problems in a duffel bag and heads on down the road to the next two-bit job.

But when a sexy tourist-lady turns his head, is Driftwood ready to give up the raunchy, carefree life he loves, just for the sake of getting laid regularly?

Ray Sikorski, winner of Montana Crossroads Magazine's 1997 Short Fiction Award, completes this irreverent volume with a baker's dozen of short stories. Widow wannabe's, ping pong prodigies, and a woman who can raise herself five feet above the ground without any help from anything; they're just a few of the characters who reside in these quick, feint-and-jab vignettes of life, love, and laundromats.

"Driftwood Dan" charmed me. Mr. Sikorski writes in an earthy, modern conversational style, which sparkles with keen intelligence and a fine sense of humour. He puts "Dan" through various odd experiences, often dealing with sexuality. (Adult reading)
This author has a particular knack for ending each of his protagonist's adventures on a pointe that surprised and amused me. I predict a fine career for this highly talented writer, whether he chooses to continue to write about the endearing 'Dan' or turns to other topics.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Adventure.......2001-09-30

The misadventures of Ray Sikorski's "Driftwood Dan" offer a funny and charming look at the people who work at some of our national parks. Obviously gathered from Sikorski's own experiences, "Driftwood" is strangely captivating as he bumbles from job to job, collecting friends and bizarre stories, dispensing his country wisdom. Sikorski is a modern day Jack Kerouac!!

4 out of 5 stars An afternoon with Driftwood Dan.......2001-08-14

This is a book that you can sit down and read in one afternoon (one short afternoon) but you can also go back to many times and only read one small part to the same effect. The stories are brief for the most part and show an amazing sense of humor that catches you off guard on occasion and requires you to go back and read the last few lines again, just to confirm that subtle joke was, in fact, meant to be just that. If you are looking for something casual and comfortable and clever, then this might meet your requirements. I only gave it four stars because I think 5 out of 5 suggests perfection and I have yet to read a "perfect" book.

            Book Description

Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson’s decisive victory over the combined fleets of France and Spain on 21 October 1805 remains one of the greatest naval triumphs in history. Off Cape Trafalgar, 27 British and 33 Franco-Spanish ships pounded each other in an epic four-hour struggle on whose outcome rested nothing less than Britain’s security against Napoleonic invasion. Nelson’s brilliant tactics, inspiring leadership and the superior training and morale of his crews left his opponents shattered in a savage encounter that not only marked the last great battle fought in the age of sail, but ushered in a century of British naval mastery.

4 out of 5 stars An Epic Battle That Is Clearly Explained.......2006-10-06

This book does a fine job of describing the battle and is one of the better editions in "Osprey's "Campaign" series. The author spends just the right amount of time on related aspects of this campaign such as the state of the three navies involved and the opposing commanders. One criticism of the book, however, is that more time could have been spent on the French commander, Vice Admiral Pierre Villeneuve. Vice Admiral Lord Nelson clearly receives the lion's share of attention.

The author does an excellent job of describing the various stages of the battle. The story is told in a chronological order that is both clear and concise. This is a significant accomplishment given that the battle consisted of a several different engagements. For example, he does not just focus on Lord Nelson's flagship in the weather column, HMS Victory. A fair amount of time is spent on other vessels, such as the French ship Redoutable and the HMS Royal Sovereign, which lead the lee column.

The maps do a good job of describing the numerous ship locations. In addition, full color drawings of some of the battles provide a good feel for 19th Century warfare and the activities of the crews. The 3D Birds Eye View maps are nice, but do have one flaw. The critical events described on these maps are mostly positioned at the fold in the page. Thus, it is hard to see what the text is trying to describe.

The book carries the reader through several significant events that followed the battle. Specifically, it describes the storm that nearly destroyed the fleet. The author also spends time on Lord Nelson's funeral. Bottom line: this is a short book that does an excellent job of describing in detail the very chaotic Battle of Trafalgar.

4 out of 5 stars What Does Lady Hamilton have to do with Trafalgar?.......2005-10-09

Oxford historian Dr. Gregory Fremont-Barnes provides an Anglo-centric but capable interpretation of the British naval victory at Trafalgar in October 1805. Readers interested in a quick summary of the events leading up to the battle and the main actions in the battle will be satisfied with this volumes narrative and maps. The author's writing style is crisp and he is able to keep both maps and text in synch to deliver a coherent summary of the battle. However, the author's over-emphasis on Nelson's personal life detracts from his coverage of the Franco-Spanish participants and his interpretations are far too over-generalized. Over time, the British victory at Trafalgar has morphed into a certain mythology, to which this author adheres.

The author begins with the usual Osprey introductory sections, including campaign background, opposing commanders, forces and plans. To be blunt, these sections are somewhat less than adequate. About 60% of the opposing commanders section is just about Nelson, with just a nod to the other British commanders and their Franco-Spanish opponents. The section on opposing forces is overly-generalized to a fault, with no real specifics on the ships or their weapons; for example, there is no mention that different rates carried different size cannon or that some ship types were more maneuverable than others. The author does repeat the oft-quoted simplification that British ships fired roundshot and that the French fired chain-shot to disable sails. While the French may have preferred anti-rigging tactics in frigate actions, this makes no sense in a general action like Trafalgar where vessels were not as free to independently leave the battle. Furthermore, much of the action at Trafalgar was at close range - does it make any sense to aim at the enemy's rigging when the enemy ship is virtually alongside?

The section on opposing plans and the lead-up to Trafalgar has its ambiguities. Although British historians like to claim that Trafalgar prevented a French invasion of England, this volume - as other larger works do as well - avoids much discussion of actual French plans. Given that Napoleon was already planning major operations in central Europe, there really weren't any uncommitted French forces left to invade England by the time that Trafalgar was fought and the best weather period in the English Channel was already past. Indeed, the Franco-Spanish fleet was essentially aborting the invasion when it left Cadiz, enroute to return to Toulon (a fact that most English historians tend to gloss over). Despite all the coming and going to the West Indies, the Franco-Spanish fleet had accomplished nothing in 1805, other than finding their way back to their homeports.

The author's description of the actual battle of Trafalgar is decent and readers should have no trouble following it, but some of the pre-battle dispositions are vague. For example, why was HMS Africa on its own up by the front of the Allied fleet? There is also a disconnect between the order of battle and the text, which uses different terminology for the same sections of the Allied fleet (which reversed course and position at the start of the battle); for example, the author refers to Admiral Le Pelley's "van division" but the OB refers to this as the "rear squadron." It's confusing. The volume includes five 2-D Maps (fleet movements before Trafalgar; Calder's Action; opening phase of Trafalgar; situation at the end of the battle; Strachan's action), three 3-D maps (Bellerophon under pressure; situation of leading vessels of Nelson's column; final stage begins) and three color battle scenes by Christa Hook (Royal Marines on the Royal Sovereign; French sharpshooters in the mizzen top of the Redoutable; gun crews in action on HMS Victory). The author also includes an excellent bibliography and a glossary of naval terms.

Assessing the scale of the British victory is difficult, since the only compilation of Allied losses is in tiny print in the OB section. The Allies lost 17 ships at Trafalgar, subsequently recaptured 3, and then lost 8 more in the next two weeks. Indeed, of the 33 Allied ships-of-the-line at Trafalgar, 23 had been lost in October 1805. Other than the elimination of so many Allied warships, the author claims that Trafalgar had "important consequences" - namely, the British occupation of Sicily. However, a British foothold in Sicily did not contribute to the defeat of Napoleon. Like most British historians, Dr. Fremont-Barnes sees Trafalgar as an epoch-making event, but this ignores the fact that the French made strenuous efforts to rebuild their fleet and while there were no more major fleet actions, the Royal Navy still had to commit substantial forces to blockade French ports. Naval history did not just "end" after Trafalgar and this author ignores the fact that the French Navy was at the cutting edge of naval technology for the next fifty years after Trafalgar. Claiming that Trafalgar was "the most decisive naval battle in modern times" as this author does ignores the fact that other battles, like Midway and Leyte Gulf, also had major strategic implications.

Nowhere is the author's over-emphasis on Nelson more prominent than in the final section, where he spends a couple pages discussing Nelson's funeral and his requests about Lady Hamilton and his daughter. Why is it that the author found it more important to mention Lady Hamilton's debts (a person who was not at Trafalgar) and death, but fails to mention that poor old French Admiral Villeneuve committed suicide? Throughout this volume, spotlight on Nelson drives the Franco-Spanish opponents into the shadows.

1 out of 5 stars One-sided tome explains Palestinian victim mentality.......2006-12-24

"Before Their Diaspora: A Photographic History of the Palestinians, 1876-1948" by Walid Khalidi is a one-sided tale of how the Arabs of Palestine lost everything after the Ottoman Empire for whom they fought was defeated and replaced by the British in 1918.

The book richly chronicles the mostly upper class segments of Arabs who lived in the British Mandate of Palestine. It does a poor job, however, of telling history.

In Khalidi's book everywhere and at all times, Palestinian Arabs are the hapless victims of Zionists and the British. No where does Khalidi discuss the sinister side of the Palestinians' chief leader at the time, the Grand Mufti Amin al-Husayni.

Grand Mufti Amin al-Husayni, the leader of the 1936 uprising in Palestine was bankrolled by both the Italian Fascists and the Nazis. The Grand Mufti directed the assassination of hundreds of Arab leaders in other clans, leaders who may have sought compromise with the Jews or more effectively led the Palestinian Arabs, sparking a cycle of internecine Palestinian strife that continues to this day.

After fleeing Palestine in 1937, Amin al-Husayni went to Lebanon, then to Iraq, where he helped engineer the May 10, 1941 pro-Axis coup. In an act all too familiar today, the Mufti issued a religious ruling or fatwa calling for holy war (jihad) against the British. His fatwa speech was carried by Iraqi and Axis radio stations. In it he said, "In Palestine the English have committed unheard of barbarisms; among others, they have profaned the al-Aqsa Mosque and have declared the most unyielding war against Islam, both in deed and in word."

When the coup collapsed, Amin al-Husayni escaped to Germany where he encouraged Hitler to accelerate the "Final Solution" to exterminate European Jewry. He helped recruit Bosnian Muslims into the 13th Waffen SS Division, an elite part of the Nazi war machine responsible for killing some 80 percent of Bosnia's 14,000 Jews.

In another propaganda broadcast, the Mufti said, "Arabs, arise as one man and fight for your sacred rights. Kill Jews wherever you find them. This pleases God, history, and religion. This saves your honor. God is with you."

After the war, Amin al-Husayni escaped to Egypt where he helped organize the Palestinian Field Commands - the forerunner to today's Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). He died in 1974, unpunished for his war crimes.

The late PLO chairman Yasser Arafat was a cousin of al-Husayni. Arafat studied under the Grand Mufti's guidance where he learned much of his virulent anti-Semitism directly from a contemporary of Hitler.

To Europeans who had just defeated Hitler, the Palestinians were hardly innocent bystanders deserving of support in 1948. In the wake of the Holocaust, one can empathize with the Jews of Palestine for being reluctant to deal with Palestinian leaders such as al-Husayni. One wonders what the history of Palestinian Arabs would have been had they been served by better leaders.

Of course, Khalidi ignores every last bit of this in his one-sided tome.

5 out of 5 stars Desolation is in the Eye of the Beholder.......2003-07-23

Zionist propaganda is typically based on the assumption that before the advent of the Zionist colonizers from Europe, Palestine was a desolate piece of land empty from but a few inhabitants. "Before Their Diaspora" presents a powerful collection of photographs from pre-1948 Palestine in order to dispel the Zionist claim. What we get as a result, however, is much more than a simple argument that "there were people in Palestine". We are transported to Palestine, and back in time, to nearly re-live the story of its inhabitants. We get to see these people's faces, join in on their weddings and celebrations, climb their trees with them to pick olives or oranges, and survey their blooming countryside and thriving cities. We get to see and feel a living nation of human beings, with roots and traditions as ancient as civilization itself.

A useful feature of this book is a thorough timeline at the beginning of each chapter, so we can follow their story and see how the arrival of more and more Zionist immigrants and the resulting conflict affected their lives. The book also provides extensive maps and statistics indicating the proportions of land and population, by region at each point in the story. Thus this book is as useful for the researcher as it is fascinating for the average reader wanting to know about Palestinians. I highly recommend getting this book along with "All That Remains: The Palestinian Villages Occupied and Depopulated by Israel", by the same author, which uses meticulous research and hundreds of photographs to show us the sad conclusion the 1948 war brought upon the people we get to meet in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Intriqued in Vancouver, Canada.......2002-08-30

This is the most beautiful book I have ever come across that depicts pre-1948 Palestine through photographs of the people and the, now destroyed, country.
It portrays the Palestinians as industrious, enlightened, and a richly creative people who had established a highly developed society that was destroyed by British colonialism and Zionist brutality.
It is remarkable how the pictures require little explanation. The author has provided a plethora of diverse photographs from several decades that show Palestine at its height of development and economic prosperity to its rapid decline caused at the hands of British greed and Zionist aggression.
This book is a must for anyone interested in looking at the rich history and developed society of pre-1948 Palestine. I highly suggest that anyone who wants to learn about a people who has been displaced for more than 50 yrs, should look at their history and look at how their lives were before colonialism and the forced rule of Israel.

This book should be of interest to anyone who is curious about pre-colonial societies in the Middle East and abroad. Let us not forget that colonized societies had a far richer history and socio-economic development then we can fathom today or are willing to acknowlege.

            5 out of 5 stars A Real Mind Opener.......2002-04-27

It presents the Palestinians as real people, not as cartoon cut-outs. This book provides insight for a largely ignorant and deceived public on the structure and history of a surprisingly Western society now largely destroyed. Without books like this, history would never tell us about these people. A real gem, and a great conversation-starter.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning, remarkable, and intelligent.......2002-03-06

This is a great book by one of the world authorities on the modern history of Palestine. The photo collection is fascinating, and provides a rare glimpse into the world of pre-1948 Palestine.
