Supplier Management Handbook
ASIN: 0750673435 |
Book Description
This book reconciles two divergent worlds for the beleaguered quality manager. The first is that of quality and managerial fads, promoted by quality professionals and the quality 'industry' - with its seminars, certification programs and the pressures of an ever increasing number of international standards, state and national legislation and powerful corporations. The second is a virtual antithesis to this world of mission statements, quality policies, procedures and statistical techniques, and is embodied in the international phenomenon that is the Dilbert (TM) cartoon strip. Across America and Europe millions of ordinary employees revel in the truths that are exposed concerning corporate absurdities and a blind reliance upon acronym-laden quick-fixes.
Here you will find the gap bridged between the vast literature of quality fads (including the recent tranche of international standards) and that more humorous portrayal of these worlds. The origins of today's quality ideology and industry is traced, followed by a description of how the quality profession popularizes, promotes and ultimately benefits from the fads that come and go. Finally it is shown that despite the propaganda of the profession, there is a separate reality to "quality" and that management principles in this field can only ever be a small limiting factor in corporate success.
Addresses a vital aspect of Supply-chain Management, one of todays hottest management topics
From a widely and internationally published quality author and professional

Chocolate in Mesoamerica: A Cultural History of Cacao (Maya Studies)
ASIN: 0851996191 |
Book Description
An understanding of genetic resources is an essential prerequisite for any breeding program. The cacao (Theobroma cacao) plant has a rich genetic diversity that exists at two levels: that of the primitive populations in the area of original distribution of the species, and that of the derived
cultivated populations.
This book provides a comprehensive review of our current knowledge of this subject. Starting with the foundations of genetic diversity in the Amazonian and Caribbean regions, it describes how this has developed in cultivated populations, first in South America and around the Caribbean, and then
beyond the Americas. It then describes the relationships between populations and how the genetic resources can be utilized to produce new cultivars. The book is written by an acknowledged world expert with 50 years of experience in the subject, and should provide a unique knowledge base upon which
further work can be based. It will interest workers in plan genetics and breeding, botany, and the cocoa and chocolate industry.

Praise for "Whitewash"
"F***ing Brilliant" - The Estate of Euan O'Dell
"How does Blair do it? Everyone in this town talks to Erik Blair, because if you don't, you're screwed." - Paris Biddle Blumenthal
"Blair's paroxysms of outrage at being a victim of deception speak for all of us who thought we knew what we knew when we knew it. And his unparalleled gift for the intimate anecdote reveals an inner Washington we all should have seen coming a long time ago" - Frank Arouet
"A disarming account which reveals the salient fact of modern political life: the perpetual war between honesty and loyalty. Whitewash" should awaken us from our dogmatic slumbers" -Samantha Franken Butler
When Erik Blair took in a homeless woman, injured by the roadside, he could not possibly have imagined the staggering rise to fame and power that the future held for her. Nor could he have known that she was hiding a secret life. The CIA, the President, and his staff most certainly could discern her true identity, though, if only they would dare to look. But is there anyone willing to pay the price of honor...?
Customer Reviews:
Thoughtful and timely.......2005-02-21
Jayson Blair, Armstrong Williams, apparently many journalists these days are faking it. Another fake journalist, using an alias, gets access to the White House.
Politicians, of course, have spun their public image for so long most don't even remember who their real self is.
Neither politicians or the press are doing much to help us sort out truth from fiction. If anything they're all making it worse. And who cares? Everybody's watching "reality TV."
For those of us who do care the only thing left to do is laugh. Which you will if you read this book.
The characters are interesting and the story draws you along - it's a mystery as much as it is a satire. Erik Blair means well, even if he's not perfect, and the author doesn't simplify things into good v. evil. It's fiction, but it's more like things really are.

Download Description
You're no idiot, of course. You know that the Middle East is always in the news. But the situation there is so complex, you just can't keep track of it all. Was King Hussein related to Saddam Hussein? Why all the fighting over the West Bank? And what does oil, water, and sand have to do with it? Don't let your brain get parched. This useful book sorts through the political and military quagmire of the Middle East in language anyone can understand.
Customer Reviews:
Complete waste of time.......2007-10-15
This book is biased, poorly written (even for a complete idiot) and is a COMPLETE waste of time. Do not even waste one minute by reading this book, unless you are looking for a way to make yourself feel better about Israel's invasion of Palestine.
The background necessary for understanding the conflict in the M.E........2007-09-20
This book is an eye opener. I understand why many people are upset by it: It completely contradicts the "politically correct myths about "the poor Arab victims of Israeli imperialism." It also contradicts another myth; that Israel, one that almost everyone believes: That America is Israel's great benefactor. It is not possible to explain all this is in this review, that is why everyone who is interested in this subject must read the book. After reading the book and check the sources, you may have and entirely different perception on Jewish/Arab conflict and America's role in it.
The conflict cannot be solved as long as we continue to believe in myths. It is politically correct these days to blame Israel. What we are overlooking is that Israel is facing the Arab and Muslim world that is unified about only one thing, their hatred of Jews and commitment to destroy Israel.
The Arabs have openly promised to exterminate the Jews before starting each of the wars against Israel:1948, 1956, 1967, 1973 as well as in the long-lasting war of attrition.
Most people believe that "Israel was established by the Brits", the reality is diametrically opposite. The Brits did everything in their power to prevent Jew from entering Palestine. Just before and during the WWII the Brits prevented Jews from entering Palestine, condemning over 1 million immigrants to the German gas chambers.
When after declaring independence, Israel was attacked by all the Arab states, the Brits and Americans imposed weapon embargo on Israel, while the Brits continued supply vast quantities of weaponry to the Arabs. British officers were actively leading the Jordanian Arab Legions against Israel. British advisors were assisting the Egyptian army, and British pilots were flying the Egyptian air force. (4 were shot down over Israel and taken prisoner).
Haven read this book, most readers will have learned an entirely different perspective than the one commonly found in the media.
Completely Biased.......2007-07-12
I just thought everyone should know this book is totally biased towards Israel. There are plenty of other books that outline the nature of the conflict more accurately and, after reading one of those, if you are looking for a book with an argument in defense of the Palestinians I would recommend any of Norman Finklestein's books. He skillfully supports all of his claims fairly unlike Bard.
Pro-Israel Bias Alert.......2006-11-29
When I purchased this book I expected a balanced analysis of the Middle East conflict. I thought the Idiot's Guide series of books sought the middle ground presenting the facts and allowing the reader to come to an informed opinion. Instead the author supplies facts sparingly and always from a Zionist perspective. Reading this book has damaged the credibility of the Idiot's Guide series for me. I wanted information. What I got was an apologia for Israel. The book could have been written by AIPAC (in fact, Mr. Bard was for three years editor of the Near East Report, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's (AIPAC) weekly newsletter on U.S. Middle East policy.) The author finds excuses for Israeli acts of terror like the bombing of the King David Hotel in 1948 (the entire passage seems based on the memoirs of Menachim Begin) or the murders of Arab residents in Deir Yassin in 1948 by the terrorist Irgun Gun or the massacres in Sabra or Shatila in 1983. Nor does the author properly detail the appropriation of land from Arab owners or the construction of illegal Jewish settlements in the Occupied Territories (no entry exists for "Occupied Territories" in the index). The Palestinians are presented as the authors of discord and the enemies of peace and any harsh measures initiated by the Israeli government are always excused as reasonable responses to Palestinian provocation. This is propaganda posing as scholarship. It should carry a proviso that reading this book may be hazardous to the truth. I do not recommend this book to anyone who seeks the truth but if you are a cheerleader for anything Israel does you'll love it.
Extremely biased .......2006-11-27
Interesting enough presentation of material. Good if you are looking for information in support of the Israeli side of the story but don't expect non-biased information. It is written by the Executive Director American-Israeli Cooperative and his bias is obvious. I am very disappointed the Idiots Guide series would select such a non-neutral author.

World Conlicts at a glance.......2007-05-26
"Complete Idiot's Guide to World Conflicts" covers all the major hot spots of fighting in the world today. The book is laid out in parts covering major regions of the Earth like Africa, Middle East, Asia (to include the Pacific Islands), Europe, and the Americas. It covers the major conflicts from it's origins to the final bloody death tally, usually running in the hundreds of thousands. The book has a repetition to it, it seems to me all the causes for these conflicts are always the same, usually boiling down to greed or racial hatred. Another point I had to disagree with was author Steven D. Strauss's seeming anti-American slant on especially the later chapters. I felt like he was saying that the American government is the cause for almost all ills in the world. Still, a good over view of what is going on in the world, just take the commentary with a grain of salt.
Quick and dirty guide to world conflict.......2006-08-04
The book is what it purports to be--a quick and dirty guide to the world's conflicts. Other reviewers, who labeled it slanted or say it doesn't contain all the facts, miss the point. If you want ALL the facts about one of these conflicts, you can find those in the long, dry books that we academics write (please do! we need SOMEONE to read what we write).
For each conflict the author writes about, he takes a particular angle. This simplifies the story, allows readers to get an overall feel for the participants and chain of events, and guides what he includes. For most readers, this makes the book useful and informative without being overwhelming. For specialists (or even just people who care about a particular issue) it is obvious that he leaves stuff out. As someone who has written on the subject of North Korea, I was pleased with his chapter on the subject. In limited space, it tells casual readers what they need to know, without getting bogged down in complications.
A reviewer said it has an anti-US slant. I thought that if anything, it had a pro-US slant. I guess that's a good sign that it is actually somewhat balanced.
Incredible!.......2006-01-07
Ideal for George W. Bush.
Not what I hoped for........2004-07-26
I picked up this book in my constant quest to expand my base of knowledge as a high school teacher of World Studies. I was rather surprised at the lack of depth and glaringly obvious omission of key details. For example, the section on North Africa does not even mention Libya or Morocco, and the multi-page description of the Sudan conflict never mentions oil, a critical factor in the tug-of-war between the Arab north and African south. I found the maps to be irrelevant, and there sometimes even simple grammatical errors. Most disturbing was the slanted writing. I have no problem with a viewpoint from an author, but for a book purporting to be a factual description of world conflicts, the bias was evident. Some chapters are well-written, such as the Indonesia chapter, although a correctly-labeled map of all the separatist regions
described in the text might be helpful! I gave this book three stars because it does provide many clear, concise details, but for a much better book along the same lines, check out WHAT EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE REST OF THE WORLD.
Disappointingly Slanted.......2004-01-05
I skimmed this book in a bookstore and thought it would be a great volume to inform me for debating current political issues with better regard to their historical foundations. I bought the book on Amazon and upon reading it, I was disappointed in the author's leftist slant. He blames most world problems on the United States in any spurious way he can derive.
There are some useful facts here, but read this book with a grain of salt if you have it, or buy a better book if you do not. It is one thing to take a position and justify it, like Jared Diamond in "Guns, Germs and Steel", an excellent book, though I disagree with his premises. It is another thing to do as Strauss does in this book and lbindly take a slant, possibly even unaware of the slant, and meander through a supposedly historical acocunt whilst rewriting it to suit your tastes.
I wish there was more consistency in the quality of "Complete Idiot's guide to..." books.
Book Description
If you are too young to remember the Vietnam War, this book will give you a comprehensive view of the thirty-year conflict, a more complete story than you might get in your history textbook. It will satisfy the curiosity of those who want to know more about the history and culture of the United States during the sixites and seventies, and it will give older readers an unbiased reminder of their youth.
Customer Reviews:
What a travesty on Vietnam. Libler slant all the way.......2005-07-13
This is mostly a bunch of B.S. and it has all the markings of a liberal, anti war writer who knows zilch about Vietname ( well other than that reported in the media which was .. umm not fact)
If you want to know the whys of Vietnam and why things happened the way they did, read this book.
Dereliction of Duty : Johnson, McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam by H. R. McMaster
should be an idiots guide to the politics of vietnam.......2005-05-16
overall, i was a little disappointed when i finished this book. I wanted a book on the vietman war itself. Of course, the history and the background of the country will be involved. but the book rarely goes into detail of actual combat in vietnam. it mostly discussed the decision making among gov't officials, lies, deceit and the presidential elections. Vietnamization was covered well, but didn't talk about how the troop withdrawls were being conducted. No major or lesser known battles were discussed except the tet offensive. Then, it jumps to watergate, president ford and normalization. There is a chapter on vietnam movies. it was a nice but-not-needed chapter. I agree with the other reviewers that are 3 stars or less. I'll need to but a better book on actual battles there. For being a political war, I understand that Maga covered the politial topics, but cover more battles, too.!! If you want a book that covers what i talked about, then this book is for you. If you want actual Vietnam battles and strategies look elsewhere.
A good place to start.......2002-02-05
Having gained an interest in the war nobody seems willing to discuss, I started reading about the Vietnam war about a year ago. During this time I've read some pretty heavy books and some very moving personal accounts, yet found it difficult to recieve an overall picture of the war. This book does a great job of giving that background story and very general sort of history from which to build on. I must admit that I find the comments that the book may not be entirely accurate somewhat unsettling, but I still think that the book has great value. In High School and even college I recieved virtually no instruction on the Vietnam war, and having to start from scratch I found this book very valuable. In the end, it may not be the definative history of the Vietnam war, but if you take it for what it is it doesn't have to be.
Just what I had in mind........2002-01-30
This isn't a book that Henry Kissinger needs to read. It's a book for those of us who feel like we don't know what happened during the Vietnam era and who want to be able to converse halfway intelligently about it.
I did not find the approach bizarre at all. The section on Indonesia, for example, was one of the book's best parts in that it attempted to show the the US's view of Vietnam involvement was based upon its (America's) experience with Indonesia. This section compared Indonesia and Vietnam in a variety of ways in order to show that American involvement in Vietnam, while ultimately disastrous, may have been partly motivated by our hope that events would unfold the same way there as they had in Indonesia.
Did he really research this book?.......2002-01-04
On Page 239, the part about Hamburger Hill, the author says the Marines were fired upon from heavily dug in NVA. This was an 101st Airborne Battle, not the Marine Corps. The 3rd Brigade, and units of the 2nd Brigade of the 101st fought in this battle. I hope the rest of this book isn't as poorly researched as Page 239. I was a member of D/2/501 Inf, 101st Airborne Div., so I know about what I speak.
