        Book Description

There has been, to date, little treatment, let alone a comprehensive assessment, of the merits and demerits of US-style transnational human rights litigation by non-American legal scholars and practitioners. The book seeks not so much to fill this gap as to start the process of doing so, with a view to stimulating debate amongst scholars and policy-makers. The book's doctrinal coverage and analytical inquiries will also be extremely relevant to the world of transnational legal practice beyond the specific question of human rights litigation.

"This is a wonderful book by two of the best historians of biology in the business."—Michael Ruse, author of Darwin and Design: Does Evolution Have a Purpose?

"The detailed and thorough research underpinning this book is truly remarkable."—Frank Drake, senior scientist and director of the Center for the Study of Life in the Universe, SETI Institute

The Living Universe is a comprehensive, historically nuanced study of the formation of the new scientific discipline of exobiology and its transformation into astrobiology. Among many other themes, the authors analyze how research on the origin of life became wedded to the search for life on other planets and for extraterrestrial intelligence. Many scientific breakthroughs of the last forty years were either directly supported or indirectly spun off from NASA's exobiology program, including cell symbiosis, the discovery of the Archaea, and the theories of Nuclear Winter and the asteroid extinction of the dinosaurs.

Exobiology and astrobiology have generated public fascination, enormous public relations benefits for NASA, and--on the flip side of the coin--some of the most heated political wrangling ever seen in government science funding. Dick and Strick provide a riveting overview of the search for life throughout the universe, with all of the Earthly complexities of a science-in-the-making and the imperfect humans called scientists. Their book will appeal to biologists, historians and philosophers of science, planetary scientists (including geologists), and an educated general readership interested in the investigation of life on other planets.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent history of astrobiology.......2005-01-24

Dick and Strick present a history of astrobiological research from the 1950's to the present time. The reader is treated - and I mean treated - to wonderful expositions of the politics and science of NASA's involvement in astrobiology. Featuring early origin of life research, the Viking mission, and the Mars meteorite (among other topics), this work will appeal to scientists and historians alike. Most importantly, it is accessible to non-specialists. Well worth picking up if you are interested in astrobiology and how important that field is to the future of NASA.

This is the proceeding of the 5th International Workshop on Food Mycology sponsored by the International Commission on Food Mycology. The workshop took place October 16-18, 2003 in Samso, Denmark.

The Fifth Workshop was attended by some 35 participants, drawn from among food mycology and related disciplines around the world. The workshop was highly successful, with papers devoted to media and methods development in food mycology, as is usual with these workshops. Particular emphasis was placed on the fungi which produce mycotoxins, especially their ecology, and through ecology, potential control measures. Sessions were also devoted to yeasts and the inactivation of fungal spores by the use of heat and high pressure. Nearly 40 scientific papers were presented over three days of the workshop, and these papers are the major contributions in these Proceedings.

            Book Description

In Alien Species and Evolution, biologist George W. Cox reviews and synthesizes emerging information on the evolutionary changes that occur in plants, animals, and microbial organisms when they colonize new geographical areas, and on the evolutionary responses of the native species with which alien species interact.

The book is broad in scope, exploring information across a wide variety of taxonomic groups, trophic levels, and geographic areas. It examines theoretical topics related to rapid evolutionary change and supports the emerging concept that species introduced to new physical and biotic environments are particularly prone to rapid evolution. The author draws on examples from all parts of the world and all major ecosystem types, and the variety of examples used gives considerable insight into the patterns of evolution that are likely to result from the massive introduction of species to new geographic regions that is currently occurring around the globe.

Alien Species and Evolution is the only state-of-the-art review and synthesis available of this critically important topic, and is an essential work for anyone concerned with the new science of invasion biology or the threats posed by invasive species.

              Book Description

This monograph gives a systematic presentation of ideas, methods and results of the modern statistical theory of open systems -- systems capable of exchanging matter, energy and information with the surrounding world. The resulting self-organization can lead to more sophisticated and advanced structures. Central to this work are the statistical criteria of self-organization. The feasibility of a unified description of kinetic, hydrodynamic and diffusion processes in passive and active macroscopic systems without resorting to the methods of perturbation theory is demonstrated. On this basis, a general definition of thermal flux is given in terms of the entropy gradient. Moreover, a consistent method for calculating both kinetic and hydrodynamic fluctuations is proposed. This approach is then used to construct a theory of classical and anomalous Brownian motion in nonlinear media. This theory makes it possible to treat in an original way the phenomenon of turbulence, and to propose a unified kinetic description of laminar and turbulent motion. The proposed methods are also applied to the statistical description of quantum macroscopic open systems. This provides answers as to whether or not the quantum mechanical description is complete, and whether or not there are hidden parameters in quantum mechanics. The book has no analogy in the existing literature. It is both a monograph and a textbook, and is based largely on the author's original research. The book will be useful to postgraduate students and researchers in chemistry, physics, mathematics, economics, sociology, and engineering.

                  Book Description

Paradise in Ashes is a deeply engaged and moving account of the violence and repression that defined the murderous Guatemalan civil war of the 1980s. In this compelling book, Beatriz Manz--an anthropologist who spent over two decades studying the Mayan highlands and remote rain forests of Guatemala--tells the story of the village of Santa María Tzejá, near the border with Mexico. Manz writes eloquently about Guatemala's tortured history and shows how the story of this village--its birth, destruction, and rebirth--embodies the forces and conflicts that define the country today.
Drawing on interviews with peasants, community leaders, guerrillas, and paramilitary forces, Manz creates a richly detailed political portrait of Santa María Tzejá, where highland Maya peasants seeking land settled in the 1970s. Manz describes these villagers' plight as their isolated, lush, but deceptive paradise became one of the centers of the war convulsing the entire country. After their village was viciously sacked in 1982, desperate survivors fled into the surrounding rain forest and eventually to Mexico, and some even further, to the United States, while others stayed behind and fell into the military's hands. With great insight and compassion, Manz follows their flight and eventual return to Santa María Tzejá, where they sought to rebuild their village and their lives.

                        Book Description

Modern society's utilization of fossil fuels has provided humanity with great benefits and many unintended consequences. What Energy Sources Should Be Pursued? examines the good and the bad inherent in all power sources including oil, nuclear, solar, hydrogen fuel cells, windmills, and others.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of views, no differentiation.......2006-07-26

If you want two different views on several energy topics (oil, nuclear energy, solar power, wind power, and hydrogen technology) but are not concerned about if the views are well-based, this is the book for you.

The problem is that there are a lot of big claims from both sides in this book and only one of the claims can be right, but this book offers no (good) way to differentiate which claims are true and which are false. For example, we have two chapter titles, "The World's Oil Supply is Plentiful" and "The World is Running Out of Oil," each that have completely contradicting conclusions, yet we are left to figure out which is true and which is false.

On a couple of the articles you can figure out which is credible and which is not. For example, the wind energy articles ("The Use of Wind Energy Should be Increased" and, not joking, "The Use of Wind Energy Should Not be Increased"), we can figure out which seems to be knowledgable by reading them carefully. For the record, many of the claims of the "Not" article such as the extensive extrapolations lack credability; the writer tried to compare Denmark to the United States when the physical size of the U.S. would help alleviate the problems at issue. Also, the "Not" article rants on and on about how we should increase energy efficiency, which we should, but that isn't what the issue is about (the author goes completely off topic multiple times as if to try to show he has some important knowlege instead of showing he has knowledge about the topic).

Anyways, it is an interesting read, but I would recommend checking out a copy from the library (just skip it altogether), unless this is just for research about the two different sides of the issue with no reflection on what is fact and what isn't. I'm going to look elsewhere for another book.

Three stars is since, under scrutiny, you can figure out that a lot of the anti-renewable energy papers are a lot of fluff with a couple legitimite complaints that are being resolved.
