    Book Description

This easy-to-read accounting theory text contains two distinct, but integrated parts. Part One focuses on two interwoven topics: accounting theory formulation and standard setting in a chronological format. This section analyzes the major historical efforts attempted in the development of an accounting theory. The Conceptual Framework project is studied, and the FASB and how it influences current standard setting is examined. Part Two covers contemporary financial reporting issues as they relate to the FASB's Conceptual Framework. Controversial accounting areas, such as cash flows, accounting for pensions, post-employment benefits and stock options, are studied within the context of the definitions of assets and liabilities provided by the Conceptual Framework. Interesting and challenging cases provide the reader with practical experience in applying accounting theory.

        Book Description

Part biography of a book, part scientific exploration, part bibliographic detective story, The Book Nobody Read recolors the history of cosmology and offers a new appreciation of the enduring power of an extraordinary book and its ideas. Prodded by Arthur Koestler's claim that when it was first published nobody read Copernicus's De revolutionibus—in which Copernicus first suggested that the sun, not the earth, was the center of the universe—renowned astro-historian Owen Gingerich embarked on a three-decade-long quest to see in person all 600 extant copies of the first and second editions of De revolutionibus, including those owned and annotated by Galileo and Kepler. Tracing the ownership of individual copies through the hands of saints, heretics, scalawags, and bibliomaniacs, Gingerich proves conclusively—four and a half centuries after its publication—that De revolutionibus was as inspirational as it was revolutionary.

5 out of 5 stars Chasing the Revolutions of Nicolaus Copernicus.......2007-05-18

In 1970, Owen Gingerich set out to survey every surviving copy of Copernicus's book. His journey took him around the world and, eventually, took thirty years to complete.

This book is the story of that journey. In equal parts, Gingerich provides us with the biography of a book, some knowledge of the scientific knowledge it contains, an insight into the people who owned it and some fascinating information about 16th century book publishing. We also see some of the dark side of the rare book trade.

A great 'book about a book'.

        Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars First Class Detective Story.......2006-12-18

The author chronicles his 30 year search for fate of the original copies of the Copernicus's revolutionary text. This makes for a first rate detective story. The book is as hard to put down as any good mystery.

Gingerich shows that the history of astronomy is interwoven with the entire history of mankind.

4 out of 5 stars Creating a Census for an Antique Book.......2006-09-19

This book is rather different. Although it's about Copernicus' book "De Revolutionibus", very little astronomy is discussed. There is also very little about Copernicus himself. The main theme of the book is finding as many still-existing copies of Copernicus' book as possible, and describing each one in detail - the ultimate purpose being the publication of a so-called "census" of that ancient book, i.e., a snapshot in time that identifies and describes each individual copy and where it is located in the world. Since I know nothing about antique book collecting, I learned a lot on this field by reading this book. I was not aware of all the work and travel required in finding a given copy of a book, especially identifying the authors of any hand-written notes on its pages. I did find certain lengthy descriptions rather monotonous, but some of the author's adventures are quite intriguing, particularly where he makes use of his notes to identify possibly stolen copies that eventually surface at auctions or elsewhere. Some aspects of life and technology in the sixteenth century that are important for the theme of this book, as well as discussions of some of Copernicus' contemporaries, are touched upon. But as the author states, this book is really a memoir of his census project. I think that this book would be of most interest to those with a passion for ancient books and ancient book collecting.

5 out of 5 stars A historians quest for truth.......2006-08-29

A wonderful voyage in search of copies of first and second editions of Copernicus and the revolutions. Mysteries revealed through the tenacious searching for these volumes by Dr.Gingerich. Style is easy to read and maintains ones interest though to the end by the use of comic relief.

2 out of 5 stars Little wonder nobody read.......2006-05-21

I read this book on the advice of a review in the science journal, Nature. But I must say that it is, at best, a monotonous, plot-free read. There is virtually no history of science here, no gripping detective story or expose, and it is certainly far from engrossing. There are no personalities involved, little sensitivity to history, and so nothing to grab one's interest. Except for the first chapter (concerning a law suit over a stolen copy), the rest of the book pretty much consists of a dry, bare-boned littany of the author's survey of extant copies of Copernicus' great treatise, De Revolutionibus. There are a few entertaining comments about Edward Rosen (another historian of science fascinated with Copernican minutiae )that smack of professional rivalry (or perhaps a generational shift in science history studies?). The rest of the chapters consist of lifeless prose on boring topics, with an rambling commentary on the then-current Cold War. The book is tedious because it fails to breathe life into its topic. But then, how could it? For it is little more than a glorified list of copies. It took nearly all my gumption (not to mention a looong layover in Chicago O'Hare Airport) to even finish the book. Stick to the highlights (Chapters 1-3, Plate 1a, and the photo on p. 198 of Galileo's horoscope for Cosmo d'Medici) and you'll have about all there is worth having here.

                          Book Description

Between the 3rd and 6th centuries AD the traditional legions of heavy infantry were whittled away and eventually replaced by a force of various arms and nationalities dominated by cavalry and supported by missile troops. However, in spite of this trend towards cavalry, the pedes remained the backbone of the Roman army until well into the 5th century. This book details a warrior who was very different from the legionary who preceded him; perhaps he was not as well disciplined, but in many ways he was more flexible – ready for deployment to trouble spots, and for fighting both as a skirmisher and a heavy infantryman.

5 out of 5 stars Details on an ignored period.......2007-03-29

I have been interested in this general topic for several years, and have long tried to find a good book on the later Roman army, especially the footsoldiers. Upon the discovery of this book, I had to look no more. This book helped me get rid of some common misconceptions I held, and parts of it introduced me to concepts I had no idea of whatsoever. Using archaeology and Roman literature and artwork, the author paints a detailed picture of the late infantryman's origins, appearance, and experience, tactics, and duties in both war and peace. The soldier is also not portrayed in as negative a light as the later Imperial army usually is; even though the Romans of the 3rd-6th Centuries had fallen so far, their armies could still hold their own against their Sassanid, Germanic, and Hunnish foes. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the late Roman army.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful little book.......2004-08-07

For the novice or the expert, this book gives a nice overview of the transformation of the Roman infantryman from being the heavily-armored core unit of the Imperial Roman army, to the lightly armed auxiliary force of early Byzantine times. As always, the plates in this Osprey book are well done and every attention is paid to getting the details right. A useful list of further reading is included at the end, which is very helpful for those who wish to flesh-out the scanty but tantalizing descriptions in the text with true research material.

All in all, this is a very useful little book and I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the military of late antiquity.

                          5 out of 5 stars A good book on a misunderstood era.......2004-07-09

A very good book about an era that is really fascinating to me. The subject being the change over from the "Classic" era to the start of the "Dark Ages". It is during this time that the Legions change into Field Armies and Garrison Troops because of the pressures of the Barbarians and the ecomonic collaspe of the Empire. (I shall not go into the near constant state of civil wars between the competing thugs, nutters and other sods that wanted to wear the purple.)
The Illustrations alone are worth the price but the text, maps are an added bonus. I have to agree with the other reviewer in the the B/W photos are the only down side of this book. All in all a very good buy for those with a taste for this type of history.

4 out of 5 stars Another beautifully illustrated and informative Osprey book........1999-01-20

Do you ever feel frustrated by books which have a lot of illustrations but not sufficient text to explain them? How about books which have plenty of text but lack maps, diagrams, or other illustrations which would really help you understand what the writer is talking about? Well, what I like about the Osprey military books is that they offer a good ballance of text and illustrations which harmonize to convey information to the reader in an efficient and entertaining manner.

This is one of my favorite titles from them. It covers a very fascinating period of transition in Europe -- that of the late Roman Empire. Much of the information in the text is taken from writers who lived around that time, and there are photographs of art works from the period which show us the dress and equipment of the late Roman infantrymen. My only complaint is that these photographs are printed in black & white and are often small, so one can miss much of the spectacular color and detail of these invaluable mosaics and frescos. Printing everything in color would, of course, make the book more expensive, but it still might be worthwhile. Depends on how one looks at it, I suppose. Osprey books do, however, offer a section of full color illustrations in the middle which reconstruct as best as possible the appearance and activities of the troops under study. The color illustrations in this one are superb. They show just how beautiful the uniforms were, and how slick the armor could be in the Roman armies even in the period where everything was declining and falling apart, giving way to a new European order. Though the Dark Ages were coming up, the late Roman period forshadowed aspects of the Medieval period which would bloom like a Phoenix from the ashes of the Dark Ages.

I recommend this title to anyone who is into history or who just enjoys good color illustrations. Those of you who have read my other reviews on Amazon know that I do a lot of research on Arthurian matters, particularly the historical origins of the Arthurian myths. Though this is not a title which focuses on Arthur or even Britain particularly, I still recommend it to anyone who is into Arthurian studies because it covers that general part of the world in roughly the same period.

"Eqbal Ahmad, perhaps the shrewdest and most original anti-imperialist analyst of Asia and Africa…[was] a man of enormous charisma and incorruptible ideals…. He had an almost instinctive attraction to movements of the oppressed and the persecuted…[and] a formidable knowledge of history. Arabs, for example, learned more from him about the failures of Arab nationalism than from anyone else.… Ahmad was that rare thing, an intellectual unintimidated by power or authority."-Edward W. Said, author of Culture and Imperialism, eulogizing Ahmad in The Nation and The Guardian

"[Eqbal Ahmad] was a shining example of what a true internationalist should be.… Eqbal was at home in the history of all the world's great civilizations. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of states past and present, and he knew that states had a rightful role to play. But he also knew that states existed to serve peoplenot the other way aroundand he had little to do with governments, except as a thorn in their side. To friends, colleagues, and students, however, he gave unstintingly of himself and his time.… His example and his memory will inspire many to carry on his work."-Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations

"A very dedicated and honorable activist, Eqbal was right in the middle of everything.… He was a student of revolution and imperialism and a very good one."-Noam Chomsky, MIT

"Eqbal Ahmad was unique in combining compassion for the dispossessed-en masse and one by one; the intellectual capacity to analyze cultural, political, and economic issues on a transnational level; and an ability to raise his always eloquent voice on behalf of constructive and original solutions."-Victory Navasky, Publisher and Editorial Director, The Nation

I was not impressed by the book. I particularly did not like Eqbal Ahmad's negative attitude towards nationalism. A healthy nationalism is a good thing. Another point on which Eqbal Ahmad is mistaken is an issue of co called "Armenian genocide". "The genocide" never happened and there simply no historical facts to support Armenian claim to the one.

This book was written by a man whose greatest committment appears to be NOT to a political party, his own self-interest, or some other more or less selfish and narrow agenda, but rather to seeing clearly, reasoning fairly, and calling a spade a spade. If you want to get the point of view of someone who is as non-brainwashed as possible, look no further. This man, at least, is sane.

It is interesting to note that he is also off the radar screens of the right-wing gang-bangers. Otherwise they would be here saying nothing and pulling the rating down.

Confronting Empire is a well-done piece of work. I see a great amount of sympathy on Eqbal's part, and his ideas are life affirming. He discusses Pakistani and Indian poetry as well as geopolitics, and focuses on many areas where conflict is prevalent. Ahmad is asked how he would define his politics. "Socialist and democratic. Those have been my two lasting commitments. By democratic, I mean genuine commitment to equality, freedom of association, critical thought, and the accountability of rulers to citizens. By socialism, I mean control of the wealth by people rather than by the state or by corporations." He holds Edward Said and Antonio Gramsci in high esteem. One of many good things about Ahmad, he is always hopeful.

I read this book in 3 hours on a long haul flight and then talked my neighbouring passenger into following suit. It's that good.

A stirring page turner with simple unawashed straight-talk about politics, religion, world order, even the vagaries of corporatization. Really, I hesitate to make this into a long intellectual review but you will find themes ranging from the opportunism of Gandhi, to the seeds of discord that US itself sowed in the middle east and south east asia (and what the future holds), to the after-effects of blatant commercialization on our social lives, to.... Wait, what am I doing. There is no way you will regret the 11 dollars that go into this incredibly eye-opening insight, so stop wasting your time reading these reviews and just buy it!

Quite simply as close to an intelligent thriller as a work of non-fiction can come. Required reading.

Eqbal Ahmad is a rare example of a man who struggled to live by his principles and has shown others the way by the sheer humanity and clarity of his thought. He was a true and worthy inheritor of the sufi tradition.

The origin of different kinds of igneous rocks can be understood in terms of the tectonic setting in which they form and in terms of the isotope compositions of strontium, neodymium, and lead they contain. This book explains the petrogenesis of igneous rocks as a consequence of tectonic processes resulting from interactions between asthenopheric plumes and the overlying lithospheric mantle. The relevant principles of isotope geochemistry are explained in Chapter 1 making this book accessible to university students as well as to professionals. The relevant isotopic data are presented in diagrammatic form. In addition, the text avoids the use of acronyms.

The granitic rocks outcrop abundantly throughout the continents, often forming the cores of mountain chains, and their nature and origin has intrigued earth scientists for hundreds of years. Now that we know that granites for the most part are produced by melting in the deep crust, their appearance in the upper crust provides a way of sampling these otherwise inaccessible depths - not only to learn of the composition of this crustal understory but how it was constructed through time. There is still much to discover, especially concerning the physics and chemistry of the complicated processes of granite generation, and it is the purpose of this book to highlight the existing enigmas.

                                          Book Description

This rigorous and up-to-date synthesis of current research and thought in igneous petrology explores the complex process of the generation and cooling of igneous rocks--those formed by solidification from a molten state, either intrusively, below the earth's crust, or extrusively as lava. Through the study of the mineral associations, compositions, and textures achieved in the formation of these rocks, Paul Hess traces the evolution of igneous rocks from site of origin to place of residency. He probes the clues that the distribution of igneous rocks provides for understanding plate tectonic processes. And he focuses on a number of unresolved problems critical to igneous petrology: the ultimate source rock of a magma; the location and process of melting; the collection of magma into large movable masses; the extraction of magma from its source and its emplacement onto the earth's crust; and the conditions of the crystallization and cooling of magma in its ultimate transformation into igneous rock.

This comprehensive work, which integrates geochemistry, tectonophysics, and planetary geology with classical igneous petrology, provides a solid introduction to physical processes and isotopic principles and applies these processes and principles consistently in the discussion of petrogenetic models for all the major types of igneous rocks. It is a stimulating resource for students and researchers in igneous petrology as well as for geologists in allied fields (geophysics, geochemistry, cosomochemistry, and metamorphic petrology).

                                          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Petrology........2001-06-01

This book offers a very good introduction to igneous petrology. It starts out with a chapter about phase diagrams, which gives an excellent survey of common petrological systems. It continues with chapters on chemical proporties of different elemants, among these an excellent chapter on trace elements and radiometric datings. After this, the book goes into all the common rock-types, e.g. there's a chapter on peridotites and mantle composition, MORB basalts, OIBs, anorogenic granites, kimberlites etc.

Hess is very concise, and it may be somewhat difficult to grasp all the points in first reading, but if you take the time, there is indeed a great deal of points to get. Note however, that a knowledge of common mineralogy and basical petrology is necessary. The best about this book is, that it doesn't just list the theories and say 'that's how it is' - the observations are listed, and then everything is discussed and explained - all the reasoning behind the theories.
This book is from 1989 and is still going strong. If a new edition was made, that would be perfect.

                                                    Book Description

The volume contains papers presented at a symposium addressing the question of how the selective nature of harvesting of natural populations might cause genetic changes. Attention is focused on both theory and on data from experiments and real fish populations, with contributions from quantitative genetics,, life-history theory, population genetics and fisheries. The volume opens with a review of harvesting induced changes in fish populations by Policansky and is followed by sixteen other papers split into four topics: selection differentials, reaction norms, selection responses and the consequences for management.
