What is truly worthwhile about this book is that it cuts to the chase, and gives instant answers and guidance to anyone implementing, or beginning a process reengineering project. There are many books out there that describe what process engineering is theoretically, expousing senior-level buy-in's and how the "teams" should act. Why is it that creationists with no background in paleontology are always writing books about paleontology? Starkey's book makes me think of a car mechanic ranting about all the things wrong with heart surgery. Over and over again Starkey makes claims and blatant mistakes of fact that are easy to demonstrate so the further you plow into the book the more ridiculous it all seems. The saddest part is that anyone with even a cursory understanding of paleontology can tear his book apart with very little effort. The problem isn't whether you believe in evolution or not -- Starkey just gets his facts wrong over and over again. Sadly, if he can't get his facts right, he isn't going to convince anyone, even a well-read creationist. Skip this turkey -- it's just drivel.

A well-intentioned, but failed attempt.......2001-08-12

In the Cambrian Explosion, mechanical engineer Dr. Walter Starkey sets out to present a law-suit against evolution by examining the evidence for machine-like design in animals. The book presents several criteria for recognizing "fingerprints" of design in both machines and animals, showing the vastly greater complexity in the latter. Interesting comparisons are made of the structure, function, and operating efficiency of animals compared to machines. The unique features of self-operation and reproduction are also highlighted. In this aspect, the author makes a strong case for design.

However, in many other aspects, The Cambrian Explosion is a disappointment. In several places, the book presents evolution in an unreasonably silly manner. The persuasiveness of the arguments would likely have been enhanced by giving Darwinists the benefit of the doubt, or at least by not setting up "straw men" arguments that can easily be demolished. For example, in describing the increase of genetic material necessary for "evolving" a protozoan into a human, it is proposed that billions of atoms of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, and phosphorus must have miraculously floated "through the air from the land, sea, and air...to go to the DNA molecule of an animal (p.159)." Certainly no evolutionist claims this is the mechanism for evolution.

Overall, several problems would make The Cambrian Explosion an unconvincing book to the skeptic. Many unusual probability calculations are made throughout the book, based on sketchy assumptions with little correspondence to reality. Descriptions of biology are often a little rough or at times inaccurate; and a chapter called "The affidavits of Evolutionists" seems to be more the interpretations of the author than an accurate portrayal of evolutionist's beliefs. Furthermore, the presentation of "Progressive Creation" theory relies on some strange treatment of Biblical texts. For these reasons, the Cambrian Explosion fails to make a persuasive case against evolution.

Up to the 1950s, the Precambrian was regarded as unrewardingly unfossiliferous, records of fossils being isolated, few in number and dubious. The change came with the discovery by Reg Sprigg of body fossils in latest Proterozoic sediments in South Australia. Although there had been descriptions of isolated fossils (now recognised as Ediacaran) from rocks of this age in the nineteenth century and at the start of the twentieth century, in Newfoundland and Namibia, respectively, the Ediacara finds stimulated researches and now, at the start of the twenty-first century, diversified fossil assemblages are known, all over the world, from the period 600-543 Ma, known formerly as the Vendian and now officially as the Ediacaran. In this account, a brief description of the history of these finds is given, followed by descriptions of the most important provinces [South Australia, Leicestershire, Namibia, Russia (Podolia, the White Sea Coast, Urals and Siberia), Newfoundland (Avalon Peninsula) and Northwest Canada]: then of 27 other known occurrences of this dominantly soft-bodied and perplexing fauna(?)-it seems certain that some, at least of the fossils, are animal fossils, although some, even the greater part, could be a unique form of life, not animals or plants (''Vendobionta''). These descriptions, derived in the course of a literature search lasting over a year, are followed by discussions of important special aspects: trace fossils; geochronology and correlation; geotectonics; glaciation (the ''Snowball Earth'' concept applied to the Varangian/Laplandian/Marinoan glaciation, which ushered in this last subdivision of the Proterozoic); the evidence for Ediacaran and other life forms existing in the Proterozoic prior to its last, Ediacaran, chronological subdivison; the Vendozoa concept. The last section consists of short summary of conclusions. This text essentially constitutes an objective record of what has been published to 2005 on the Ediacaran System.

Good reference book, but a horrible textbook.......2003-10-16

This book is currently used in my Engineering Thermodynamics course, and is due to be phased out in favor of another textbook beginning in 2004. The authors of this text, Dr. Sonntag and Dr. Van Wylen, seem to know their stuff; however, they have not done a good job of writing a textbook that a typical engineering student can learn from.

The entire book is black and white text, with a few mediocre drawings, and a minimal number of worked example problems--some chapters do not have a single example problem. The few example problems that are given are usually solved by skipping most of the critical steps. The authors seem to assume that readers will be doing most of the complex calculations in their heads.

What is most annoying, however, is that for many of the book's end-of-chapter problems, the authors have not shown how to solve them anywhere within the chapter. Once again, the authors may have assumed that only geniuses would be reading their text and that they should be able to derive the necessary equations completely unaided by sample problems, illustrations, or other learning aids.

In short, I feel sorry for any full-time student who is forced to learn thermodynamics from this textbook.

For learning thermodynamics, I think "Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics" by Michael Moran and Howard Shapiro is a much better choice. It has plenty of explanatory graphs and illustrations (in color even), as well as numerous worked examples. Dr. Sonntag and Dr. Van Wylen, are you paying attention?

I give this book 2 stars overall.
As a reference book, I give it 4 stars.
As a book to learn thermodynamics from, I give it 1 star.

The Best of Ternodynamics.......2000-03-30

Is a book wich explain detaily, all the laws on termodynamics, has a very good examples and excercises. Another issue, it works on International systems Units, and is very good because the world is changing for using that units on all the industries, it has conversion factor for English and metrics units. I recommend it as the best book for the begining on Termodynamic studies.
