Book Description
As stability has begun to return to the Asia-Pacific region, so do international investors' appetites for high-yielding Asian securities. Right now, due to the substantial bank debt accrued during the last financial crisis there, the liveliest investment areas in the Asian-Pacific region are fixed income instruments. Authors Jonathan A. Batten and Thomas A. Fetherston provide country-by-country analyses, including highly-focused descriptions of the history, current disposition, and future prospects of each country's bond markets, along with detailed explanations of the market structure and conventions in each.
Jonathan Batten is a Professor of Finance at Deakin University. His professional experience includes senior posts at the Australian Industry Development Corporation, The Bank of Tokyo, Credit Lyonnais and IBM Consulting in their Asia-Pacific Banking and Finance Group.

Book Description
Negotiating a Labor Contract: A Management Handbook, Third Edition, gives you the winning strategies you need to meet the increasingly complex challenges of labor contract negotiations today. This practical and authoritative publication covers all aspects of negotiations, from assessing the bargaining climate to drafting the final contract document. In between, it covers such essential topics as preparations for negotiations, presenting proposals and counterproposals, costing demands and offers, ways to avoid impasse, labor law issues, preparing for strikes, and working with mediators. Stressing process more than philosophy, this volume leads novice negotiators through the entire bargaining experience and also provides seasoned management spokespersons with new insights and practical tips. In addition to giving you expert guidance, the book contains dozens of handy forms and checklists that will simplify labor negotiations preparation and analysis.
The Third Edition of this comprehensive treatise on labor contract negotiation processes and techniques has been updated and expanded to reflect the latest developments in the field of collective bargaining, including:
--Long-term contracts --Cost-sharing of health care benefits --Recent NLRB and court decisions --Current examples of contract costing and bargaining parameters --Updated forms and worksheets --New pension developments, including cash balance plans, and more. The Third Edition also features a new chapter on non-traditional negotiations. In this chapter, the author reviews various methods that alter the labor-management landscape of contract negotiation. Many employers, especially in the public sector, have sought additional guidance on such collaborative models. You get details of the rationale and strategies for conducting collaborative or "win-win" bargaining, and such innovations as early opening of contracts, limiting the scope of negotiations, and interest arbitration. You will gain insight into the advantages and disadvantages of this non-traditional form of bargaining.

Don't Negotiate a Labor Contract Without It.......1998-10-26
"Negotiating a Labor Contract" by Charles S. Loughran is an outstanding how-to book. It breaks down a highly complex subject in an easily understood manner. There is no legal mumbo-jumbo in this book - just a practical, to the point, step-by-step overview of the entire labor contract negotiating process. The book benefits not only the labor relations professional. Operations people will gain a strong understanding of the negotiating process, including the preparation required prior to beginnning bargaining. It will allow management to position themselves to get the best deal possible. The book's appendix includes detailed checklists on, among other items, negotiations and strike contingency preparation. It also includes a succinct overview of the law controlling labor negotiations. The book was indispensable for me as a member of the negotiating team during a protracted nine-month negotiation that included a union reneg, a tie ratification vote, elimination of dues check-off and declaration of impasse. With each twist and turn in the road, there are people who gladly will offer advice. Throughout it all, Charles Loughran was there to keep me pointed in the right direction. I also found the book invaluable when I was assigned to be chief spokesperson for several small bargaining unit negotiations. I recommend the book strongly to anyone who is involved, in any way, in labor contract negotiations. I must include in this group, members of Union negotiating committees. Union reps who read this book would benefit greatly (and so would their members). It has been three years since I read the book, but I refer back to it frequently. I also recommend it to others whenever possible. My hope is that the author is able to keep the book up-to-date. The second edition is now six years old. At least one line of his advice, that "management negotiators should seek to include a 'zipper' clause" (p. 465) appears to be a concept no longer in vogue among labor attorneys. Nevertheless, to me, Charles Loughran's work will always be a classic of business books. Don't negotiate a labor contract without it.

Book Description
Biological and cultural processes have evolved together, in a symbiotic spiral; they are now indissolubly linked, with human survival unlikely without such culturally produced aids as clothing, cooked food, and tools. The twelve original essays collected in this volume take an evolutionary perspective on human culture, examining the emergence of culture in evolution and the underlying role of brain and cognition. The essay authors, all internationally prominent researchers in their fields, draw on the cognitive sciences -- including linguistics, developmental psychology, and cognition -- to develop conceptual and methodological tools for understanding the interaction of culture and genome. They go beyond the "how" -- the questions of behavioral mechanisms -- to address the "why" -- the evolutionary origin of our psychological functioning. What was the "X-factor," the magic ingredient of culture -- the element that took humans out of the general run of mammals and other highly social organisms?
Several essays identify specific behavioral and functional factors that could account for human culture, including the capacity for "mind reading" that underlies social and cultural learning and the nature of morality and inhibitions, while others emphasize multiple partially independent factors -- planning, technology, learning, and language. The X-factor, these essays suggest, is a set of cognitive adaptations for culture.

Book Description
Because of their vital role in the emergence of humanity, tools and their uses have been the focus of considerable worldwide study. This volume brings together international research on the use of tools among primates and both prehistoric and modern humans. The book represents leading work
being done by specialists in anatomy, neurobiology, prehistory, ethnology, and primatology. Whether composed of stone, wood, or metal, tools are a prolongation of the arm that acquire precision through direction by the brain. The same movement, for example, may have been practiced by apes and
humans, but the resulting action varies according to the extended use of the tool. It is therefore necessary, as the contributors here make clear, to understand the origin of tools, and also to describe the techniques involved in their manipulation, and the possible uses of unknown implements.
Comparison of the techniques of chimpanzees with those of prehistoric and modern peoples has made it possible to appreciate the common aspects and to identify the differences. The transmission of ability has also been studied in the various relevant societies: chimpanzees in their natural habitat
and in captivity, hunter-gatherers, and workmen in prehistoric and in modern times. In drawing together much valuable research, this work will be an important and timely resource for social and behavioral psychologists, anthropologists, paleontologists, and animal behaviorists.

Book Description
The four books comprising this novel, each covering a decade in South Africa's history, are interlinked with the developing stories of its characters. The book tells the real story of who saved South Africa from itself in the final turbulent decades of the last century, revealing Rupertheimer, the political mover and shaker behind the scenes who secretly and single-handedly steered his country to an embryonic democracy. Picturesque and provocative, brash and funny, this book does for South Africa what Catch-22 did for World War II.

Book Description
Here is the enlightening story of an esteemed and eloquent Mi'kmaq woman whose message of "gentle persuasion" has enriched the life of a nation. Rita Joe is celebrated as a poet, an educator, and an ambassador. In 1989, she accepted the Order of Canada "on behalf of native people across the nation." In this spirit she tells her story and, by her example, illustrates the experiences of an entire generation of aboriginal women in Canada. Song of Rita Joe is the story of Joe's remarkable life: her education in an Indian residential school, her turbulent marriage, and the daily struggles within her family and community. It is the story of how Joe's battles with racism, sexism, poverty, and personal demons became the catalyst for her first poems and allowed her to reclaim her aboriginal heritage. Today, her story continues: as she moves into old age, Joe writes that her lifelong spiritual quest is ever deepening. Celebrated Mi'kmaq poet Rita Joe is much in demand as a storyteller and spokesperson for First Peoples across Canada and the United States. Her poetry has been widely anthologized, in particular in educational materials. Born in Whycocomagh, Cape Breton Island, Rita Joe now resides on the Eskasoni Reserve on the Bras d'Or Lakes.

Book Description
After developing his Law of Gravitation, Newton came to believe that the Universe was infinite and homogeneous on a large scale. Einstein's original intuition was similar to Newton's in that he thought our Universe was static, infinite, isotropic and homogeneous. The field equations of Einstein's general relativity are solved for this universe. One of the three solutions found, the "infinite closed universe", traps light within a finite portion of the universe. This infinite closed universe model is shown to fit all the data of the Hubble diagram better than the Big Bang, and it fits the recent supernova data without having to postulate mysterious dark energy. Using general relativity and the physics which evolved from Newton, the author finds the force of gravity between two point particles. Utilizing this force and the infinite closed universe model, the net force of gravity on a point particle, in arbitrary motion, due to the uniform mass distribution of the universe is calculated by an integration. This net force of gravity is found to be equal to the force of inertia. These calculations explain Newton's First Law, Newton's Second Law, and the equivalence of inertial and gravitational mass. In addition, by the extension of Einstein's general relativity to two-body interactions Newton's Third Law is elicited. These results show that the cosmological redshift and the physics that we know are likely the result of the uniform mass distribution of our infinite closed universe and gravity alone.
Customer Reviews:
Best Book in Ages.......2003-08-04
This Ph. D. physicist, Barry Bruce, has written an astounding book- cosmologically uniting Newton, Mach, and Einstein while producing a breathtakingly superior fit to the Hubble red shift data.
It is a conceptually and analytically powerful book - but also
a well polished enjoyable read. My physics Ph.D. is in theoretical physics from Boston University 1986 .
I found the book to be extremely competently done, enjoyable to read, and to offer a far better fit and conceptually much simpler explanation of the cosmically oriented raw data.
( More natural than current cosmological theories. )
The theory accomplishes in addition a fundamental explanation /
derivation of Newton's first, second, and third laws.
Using Einstein's General Relativistic Equations, it unites in one theory aims of Einstein, Mach, and Newton at the foundational level.
This book is a must read not only for cosmologists but for anyone teaching classical or relativistic physics.
