Weak.......2002-08-22

One star may be a bit harsh, but books like this should be fairly easy to put together and this one just doesn't work. The Q&A format is all wrong because there is no way that the author can anticipate half of a reader's questions. And the format also makes it tougher to use as a reference because the book does not systematically go through the software. Some things get glossed over and anyone looking for detailed help will be disappointed. Even though I have Money 2001 software, I preferred to use the MS Money 2000 for Dummies book because it's far better organized. And the software revisions don't change much from year to year, so the book was still highly valid.

I bought this book because I was having trouble figuring out certain things that can be done with MSN Money 2001. I would have returned it but I bought it and didn't read for 4 months, when I finally read it I was truly disapointed. This book does not tell you anything but the pure basics, it is not a reference book, it is a how to balance your checkbook book. Please before you buy this item or any by this company, I would suggest getting something else.

Ask the Expert Guide to Microsoft Money 2001.......2001-08-05

This is a good, solid beginners guide, very readable and well organized. It's not as 'cute' as the Dummies series, but stronger on content. Worth a lot more than it cost!!

Unfortunately, I did not check out Amazon.com's reviews before buying this book. Most of the posted reviews accurately reflect my thoughts regarding this "Ask the Expert" book.

In short, I found the book to be too basic for my thirst for knowledge. For example, I tried to figure out how to archive my files within Money. The appendix directed me to a single page which didn't have the word "archive" anywhere on it.

The three pages on budgeting add no information to what is on Money's help screens.

My "expert" advice: Wait for a different book.

DK Publishes Another Great Book.......2003-08-11

As in all other DK books, colored pictures, photographs, and high-quality gloss paper are found in this book. This book clearly gives a drawing of the constellations, a little history, where it is visible (latitudes), and at the very end, finishes it off with a map of all of the stars from both hemispheres, meaning that you can take this book anywhere in the world and use it! Plenty of information to be found in this book for star gazers. For pros, it's a great reference as it lists individual star names, also, like M2, etc.

Crumpled Paper Dolls is proof of a life uncommon, unabridged, unforgettable. Assuredly, a life less ordinary.

Matthew's words, although uncomfortable at times, are hauntingly familiar. He reels you in with his tortured melodies and keeps you bound to him with his brave honesty and hope. Matthew is revealing to the point that I almost feel like an intruder at times. He shares his journey through life, love, and the pursuit of oneness.

I will always cherish this book. I have my face, heart, soul, and mind in it all the time.

There is a distinct dichotomy between the subject matter and the words Nolan uses to describe it: The former is sharp enough to cut through your soul, while the latter is angelic and beautiful. Taking on matters most don't want to shine a light on, Nolan takes your hand and shows you that it can be scary, but cathartic at the same time. Not since Anne Sexton have I enjoyed having my emotions stirred so fiercely. A must read for any lover of poetry and any lover of honest life.

A wonderful book! It takes twists and turns that are unexpected, with words sometimes razor sharp. It's a very realistic look at life. Honest, and sometimes sad within it's honesty. It's life as we know it, but don't always say it, and it's very well said.

It's a year or so before America enters World War II, and Los Angeles private detective Fergus O'Breen is called on to investigate a mysterious death. Lots of references to cards (playing and tarot) and adherence to the structure of the classic puzzle mystery make this a good choice for a light read.

Winning With Indirect Methods.......2004-04-24

Noted Military Historian Bevin Alexander's latest effort represents an expansion of BH Liddell Hart's work. In his classic text on strategy, Liddell Hart differentiates between direct and indirect methods of warfare, and finds the latter to be by far the more successful approach. Liddell Hart does not examine different types of indirect action, however, and this is where Alexander's work comes in. Alexander begins with the premise that frontal assaults against fortified positions should never be attempted. Attacks should always come from the side or rear. This has the advantage of striking the enemy where they are weaker, and perhaps more importantly, it throws them off psychologically, disorienting, and frightening them. Alexander lists thirteen such variations on these same ideas, such as encirclement, holding in one place and striking another, creating diversions, cutting of the enemy's retreat, etc. Each method receives its own chapter, accompanied by several historical examples of the successful execution of the tactic, usually taken from as many different eras as possible. Of particular note are the examples taken from Stonewall Jackson's campaigns, a subject on which Alexander is one of the leading authorities. In writing this work it seems clear that Alexander is trying to place himself in line with the classics of military theory: Sun-Tzu, Clausewitz, Liddell Hart. Only time will tell whether or not he achieves this lofty goal. In the meantime there is little doubt that this fascinating and well-written work should be closely examined military strategists, historians, and armchair generals.

Not for everyone.......2004-03-24

This book kinda caught be by surprise at first. Mainly it talked about how to win wars nowadays, against terrorist and not a full fledge conventional army. I continued to read though and found that the author does a very good job of comparing strategies used in the past with ways to win wars today. Another fact I enjoyed was that he does not care which side he is on. Constantly I read books that only take the American side, well in this book it plainly shows stupid maneuvers by American commanders from the enemy side. However, if you are someone who wants a book dedicated to looking at past battles and how they were won this is not for you. Although it does go into fantastic detail with plenty of maps, the book is about today and how to win the small unit actions required in todays world.

13 Rules That No Longer Apply...Or Do They...Maybe.......2004-03-19

One of the few books I've had to put down. This is because of it's redundancy, encyclopaedic breadth at the expense of depth, and it's premature obselesence.

Written post 9/11, pre Gulf War II, it's a summary of 13 military battlefield strategies. Pretty much each has an ancient example, middle example (1200-1850), and modern example (1850-1970). All well and good as an excercise in categorization, but each chapter inevitably ends with: this rule has been true for 2000 years; America's military supremacy makes the rule obsolete; I'm not sure what a future battlefield is going to look like, but somehow this rule will apply despite what I just said that the rule no longer applies.

The few times Alexander speculates about details of future battlefields--in particular Iraq--actual events have proven him to be off target. He's also enamored with today's technology of instant information, total observation by satellite and unmanned Predator reconnaisance planes; which as far as he's concerned means you'll never see an army larger than a platoon ever again.

For every military theorist who's correctly predicted the impact of a new technology, there's a dozen who've been way off. Alexander is most likely going to join the group of dozens.

One problem that Alexander sites a few powerful times, but fails to apply to his vision of the future, is the cycle of technological sumpremacy. Inevitably, one side developes a strategy or weapon that makes them king of the world, inevitably opponents develop a defense or a counter to this supremacy thus leveling the battlefield. All of Alexander's predictions essentially point to endless American supremacy thanks to our technology, but doesn't history show enemies of America will (WILL) find a counter someday? Somehow, for Alexander, that timeless rule doesn't apply now either.

And just like his book with no conclusion, this review has none either.

"Winning Wars for Dummies" this ain't............2004-01-30

There is no question that Alexander has a brilliant command of historical battles. As a guidebook about what the 13 rules of war are and examples of them in real life, this book ranks at the top. And the battles are described in such interesting detail that the reader finds himself cheering for the brilliant general and sighing for the unfortunate opponent. The problem I found with the book is that it reads much like an encyclopedia. Every chapter is completely disconnected from the others and there is little "cross referencing" indicating what the drawbacks and weaknesses of many of the rules are. Using superior weapons or methods might always be good but attacking the heart of the enemy might be good sometimes and disastrous other times. To his credit, the author does sometimes say what the hapless opponent should have done.

Still, the book is a good read for discriptions of battle strategies and the background of some major campaigns.

Fenton is the reigning expert on the Iroquois and has published extensively on a multitude of subjects relating to them. This is his life's work and it is a tremendous achievement. Not a book to curl up to, nevertheless it is a must for anyone who professes interest in American history. Worth owning.

This book gives an exposition of the exciting field of control of oscillatory and chaotic systems, which has numerous potential applications in mechanics, laser and chemical technologies, communications, biology and medicine, economics, ecology, etc.

A novelty of the book is its systematic application of modern nonlinear and adaptive control theory to the new class of problems. The proposed control design methods are based on the concepts of Lyapunov functions, Poincare maps, speed-gradient and gradient algorithms. The conditions which ensure such control goals as an excitation or suppression of oscillations, synchronization and transformation from chaotic mode to the periodic one or vice versa, are established. The performance and robustness of control systems under disturbances and uncertainties are evaluated.

The described methods and algorithms are illustrated by a number of examples, including classical models of oscillatory and chaotic systems: coupled pendula, brusselator, Lorenz, Van der Pol, Duffing, Henon and Chua systems. Practical examples from different fields of science and technology such as communications, growth of thin films, synchronization of chaotic generators based on tunnel diods, stabilization of swings in power systems, increasing predictability of business-cycles are also presented.

The book includes many results on nonlinear and adaptive control published previously in Russian and therefore were not known to the West.

Mathematical control theory is a separate branch of mathematics that, over a span of 150 years, has developed an extensive literature covering its various concepts, constructions and applications. Even for deterministic systems, the theory and applications now involve several areas of which only a few are typically presented from a unified viewpoint. In particular, until now, a self-contained treatment of the following areas has been unavailable: the basic theory of finite dimensional linear systems, of nonlinear systems, optimal control and infinite dimensional linear systems. Mathematical Control Theory: An Introduction presents, in a mathematically precise matter, a unified introduction to deterministic control theory. Moreover, with the exception of a few more advanced concepts required for the final part of the book, this presentation requires only a knowledge of basic facts from linear algebra, differential equations and calculus.

In addition to classical concepts and ideas, the book offers many recently published results. In particular, the author includes the stabilization of nonlinear systems using topological methods, realization theory for nonlinear systems, impulsive control and positive systems, the control of rigid bodies, the stabilization of infinite dimensional systems and the solution of minimum energy problems. This book introduces nonlinear control systems at a level suitable for graduate students and researchers. Chapter 1 introduces invariant distributions, a fundamental tool in the analysis of the internal structure of nonlinear systems. It is shown that a nonlinear system locally exhibits decompositions into parts similar to those introduced by Kalman for linear systems. Chapter 2 explains to what extent global decompositions may exist, corresponding to a partition of the whole state space into lower dimensional subsets. Chapter 3 describes various formats in which the input-output map of a nonlinear system may be represented, and provides a short description of the fundamentals of realization theory. Chapter 4 illustrates how a series of relevant design problems can be solved for a single-input single-output nonlinear system. It explains how a system can be transformed into a linear and controllable one, discusses the role of the nonlinear analogue of the notion of "zero", and describes the problem of asymptotic tracking, model matching and disturbance decoupling. Chapter 5 covers similar subjects for those multivariable nonlinear systems which can be rendered noninteractive by means of static state feedback, and Chapters 6 and 7 are devoted to control via dynamic feedback for a broader class of multivariable nonlinear systems. The book was first published in 1985 as Volume 72 in the series Lecture Notes in Control and Information Sciences.
