Customer Reviews:
Excellent book on compensation.......2002-06-11
This is an excellent book on rewards and compensation. I keep this book on my shelf and refer to it constantly. And, I require all my managers to keep a copy too. The coverage is complete, the writing is clear, and the book is "must have" for anyone who needs information on executive compensation.
Comprehensive, well written and very current.......2002-05-02
With executive pay under more extensive scrutiny than ever, I found this book an excellent way to resolve the dilemma about how to pay for performance. While my company's circumstances mean that there are no clear cut solutions, this was the only book I could find that laid out all the alternatives clearly and concisely. Overall, this is the best book on reward I have ever read, and I am sure I will be coming back to it again and again as my standard reference guide.
A must for practitioners and students alike........2000-06-14
This is an awesome text. In a subject area as dynamic as executive and other compensation, this book hands it to you on a "golden" platter. A must on every human resource executives bookshelf. A must for the compensation student. This book has it all and is worth the price.
Excellent book!.......1998-04-04
I read this book from cover to cover and loved every word of it! I couldn't put it down! Although it was a bith pricy, I feel that it was worth every cent.

Book Description
What do we know about the origins of the Universe, and more important, how do we know it? In a small, easy-to-read package, this book introduces you to all of the important ideas about the Big Bang and its consequences. Craig Hogan explains what happened in the early days of the universe, why we think it's expanding (and how the expansion can look the same from everyplace at once), different ways the universe could end, and the meaning of such terms as "cosmic inflation," "cosmic background radiation," and "dark matter." For everyone who has always wondered just what the cosmologists are talking about but could never find the basics explained clearly and simply, this is the book to read.
Customer Reviews:
Big overview for a little book.......2000-11-27
Easy to read but fairly complete overview of the Big Bang.
Fine little book.......1999-12-25
Well worth the money. More precise explanations could have been used in the definition of "coupling" between matter and energy. Hadrons are not defined.Quantum fluctuations are glossed over but then, I have never seen them satisfactorily explained in any popular book. Also, why not say that the number of primeval neutrons is less than that of protons because the former are unstable and decay? A good book with few flaws.
Coherent, understandable explanations of big-bang-cosmology.......1999-08-17
An excellent book for readers with basic knowledge and interest in physics and "physical thinking". It gives a complete, understandable picture of cosmic evolution and the theories which (try to) describe it, and it took away my idea of cosmology as some kind of mysterious physics.
Interesting, informative, and manageable........1999-04-09
I'm not a physicist but do read much of this "popular" science. I found this book readable and informative. The last full chapter on the inflationary universe (repulsive gravity) is particularly fascinating.
Not impressed at all........1999-03-24
While this book contains a plothora of information, it is presented in a terrible manner. Any reader who is not up-to-par on his/her quantum physics will be completely lost. I do howver have to give credit for some excellent graphs/illustrations. They are very informative.

What I have been looking for........2005-08-09
I have been a strong advocate of Elaine Morgan's Aquatic Ape Theory and Murray's Sea Energy. This book combines my favorite subjects, e.g., evolution, aquatic ape theory, the energy of the sea water and nutrition. It is the only one of its kind. Yet, it is out of print. I donot understand that. Evolutionist are either blind with their own theories or just getting old. I noticed that terrestrial evolutionists debunk the AAT, while the marine evolutionists tend to accept AAT. I wonder if they also recognize the influence of nutrition on evolution of homo sapiens.

Nutritional Factors Challenge Species.......2003-01-23
A species must have the proper nutrition to thrive, if nutrition changes the species must adapt. Better adapted mutations survive and the species is changed. For other challenges the nutritional support for the adapting mutation must be present. For instance, man must have developed his big brain while he had access to omega 3 fatty acids ---most likely near a lake or the ocean. Today, the IQ in UK is declining to lack of proper nutrition

A Reader's Adventure.......2002-12-13
This is a fun adventure that should appeal to almost anyone, particularly those who like the "Fractured Fairytale" kind of humor. The "scathing satire" referred to on the back cover is genuinely funny. Conservative readers who think that the satire cuts entirely against political correctness should read the sections regarding Jack Crackback carefully.
Book Description
"As combat veterans and high commanders know, logic is often a stranger in wartime." —William B. Breuer, in
The annals of World War II are mined with captivating cases of strange coincidences, ominous premonitions, and baffling mysteries. Now, William Breuer's painstaking research has yielded over 100 fascinating historical accounts, including:
The mysterious fire on the Normandie . . . Who really was behind the eerily efficient destruction of the famed ocean liner?
The ominous "Deadly Double" advertisement in The New Yorker . . . Was it a coded leak to Japanese and German spies announcing the upcoming bombing of Pearl Harbor?
The botched Nazi kidnapping of the Duke of Windsor . . . How did a serendipitous series of events save the duke from Hitler's grasp (and the Allied forces from a crippling strategic setback)?
The curious sinking of the Tang
. . . How did this deadliest of U.S. submarines come to meet such an unexpected and mysterious end?
"Anyone interested in twists of fate should find this book fascinating." —Library Journal
"While away a few hours or spend a few minutes at a time enjoying this collection of inexplicable, mysterious, and strange tales." —Nashville Banner
Customer Reviews:
Coincidences of WWII.......2007-08-26
This book is more about strange coincidences than mysteries. With German paratroopers dropping at the the time and place as U.S. troops. Soldiers with the same names attacking the same positions at the same time. One U.S. general disappearing after combat never to be seen again. Hitler not invading Great Britain with operation Sea Lion after so much preparation. Hitler not invading Switzerland after all the spies and positions were ready for his word. Stalin doing nothing to prepare for Hitler's obvious coming attack. And for me the strangest of all was an ad that ran in the New Yorker of a strange game called the deadly double that was being being played in a banker, it had what looked like a German eagle as its symbol and the dice in the ad showed the date of the pearl harbor bombing. The person who placed the ad died shorting after mysteriously and the ad was placed BEFORE the U.S. involvement in the war. If these thing sound interesting buy the book.
Is this Fiction?.......2006-11-12
I only jumped in to look at what was written about Hemingway and Col. Buck Lanham and it didn't take long to realize how off this author is. The story he writes took place at "Schloss Hemingstein" in the Schnee Eifel region of Germany in September 1944, not in the Huertgen Forest as claimed, which didn't occur until November. Moreover, Hemingway met Col. Lanham back in Normandy in July. Ouch! And to think this made past Wiley editors. Oh for shame.
Unexplained lapses in basic research and fact checking.......2006-09-27
I bought a paperback copy of Unexplained Mysteries of World War II, at, of all places, the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. I am a World War II buff and it looked like an interesting and somewhat offbeat read. It was that, and in general I enjoyed the book until I became aware of numerous factual errors and numerous instances of what appear to me to be copying from other sources.
The most grievous factual error was on page 160 in the People Who Vanished section, dealing with the B-24 bomber Lady Be Good. The story says that other than a few bits and pieces of clothing, etc., nothing was ever found of the crew. This is incorrect, and could have been verified with even some casual research in the library or on the Internet. In fact, all but one of the nine crewmember's bodies have been found and recovered. This is set out in great detail in the book, The Lady Be Good - Mystery Bomber of World War II, by Dennis E. McClendon. It was published in 1962 and updated in 1982 when new information about the Lady Be Good's final mission was discovered. Diaries recovered from two of the crewmembers gave stark details of their doomed but determined trek north to try and escape the limitless desert.
On page 174 in the People Who Vanished section, the book stated that the U.S. Navy was unable to explain why Flight 19 vanished, despite an exhaustive investigation. In actual fact, the Navy's 1946 report lists a number of Facts, Opinions and Conclusions based on multiple sources of evidence.
More than a dozen specific factors were cited that led to the loss, the changing of any one of which would have resulted in a different outcome: the failure of Lt. Taylor's compass; Lt. Taylor's unfamiliarity with the area; the fact that none of the airplanes had an operable/accurate clock; bad radio reception; delays in sending out rescue airplanes; inability to obtain a prompt RDF fix on the flight to help guide it home; the onset of night, which meant the pilots were ditching at sea in the most hazardous conditions imaginable; failure of the teletype system to keep shore stations apprised of the situation, etc. A good summary of the information can be found in The Bermuda Triangle Mystery - Solved, by Larry Kusche, first printed in 1986 and updated in 1995. The Navy is not mystified about what happened to Flight 19 - they screwed up, got lost, and died.
On page 166 of the People Who Vanished section is told the discovery of the ship Rubicon adrift in the Florida Straits in 1944, her crew nowhere to be found. While newspaper stories at the time hinted that something odd, the final paragraph of the New York Times story about the incident indicates that the ship was moored in Havana and the lines may have given way during hurricane-force winds, blowing the ship out to sea sans crew. Again, see The Bermuda Triangle Mystery - Solved, by Larry Kusche. This is another non-mystery that is shown as such by examining all the facts.
On page 28 of the Puzzling Events section, the advertisement for the game The Deadly Double that ran in The New Yorker just a few weeks before the Pearl Harbor attack is discussed, and it is stated that an unknown person who did not identify himself placed the ad - and that the man later met a violent end. In fact, the couple that placed the ad, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Craig, were interviewed by the FBI and completely cleared of anything other than being involved in a rather odd coincidence. The incident was discussed in some detail in The Broken Seal, by Ladislas Farago, first published in 1967.
My final comment is in regards to pages 58-59 in the Odd Coincidences section, A Couple of Mixed-Up Britons and A Postcard with a Unique View, and page 177 of the Peculiar Premonitions section, Churchill's Sudden Impulse. While I realize that all of these incidents drew from some of the same sources, it strikes me as odd that they bear a striking resemblance to the way the same incidents are described in Mysteries of the Unexplained, Reader's Digest Association, published in 1982.
fun for a quick read but.........2006-06-08
I don't know how factual this really is. I was dubious about some of these stories, others made me cringe at how not mysterious they were. Some have not enough info, some are just silly. The one about Brit & German paratroopers landing at the same drop zone at the same time in Sicily doesn't seem so "against the odds" as the author makes it out to be. That was the front & a good drop zone so the odds go way down. Besides I thought the Germans gave up on jumps after Crete?
The ones that got to me were the ones in which it was thought British intelleigence (with US help one assumes) sacrificed Dutch agents, allowed a bomber raid to be slaughtered, told Canaris no deal when he offered surrender before D-Day or tried to have DeGaulle killed. Anyone know if these are true or partly so?
A little from column A, a little from column B..........2004-01-18
I thought it was a fairly interesting book with a lot of interesting WWII trivia that you won't get from many other places. The thing that brings this book down is the fact that if you decide to look deeper into a story, one has to wonder if the author didn't just convienently ignore facts to keep things interesting. I must agree with what the other reviewers have said about the sloppy research when dealing with stories. The author finishes the story about the Lady Be Good with this ominous sentence: "No skeleton or other signs of the Lady Be Good's crew have ever been detected." That piqued my interest, as it would for many other people. A quick internet search turns up information that 8 out of 9 of the crew were found. My book was published in 1997- the crew members were found in late 1959 and early in 1960. The worst part is, at the end of that sentence, the author had the gall to put a footnote, which when looked up reads: "Author's Archives". It would seem as if anyone with internet access and even a little interest is better informed than the author of this book.
Although I'm sure some of the information in this book is completely true, the glaring errors that are there make it hard to seperate the two. And no one reading what is supposed to be nonfiction should have to find out for themselves what is true and what isn't.
Customer Reviews:
Good pictures.......2005-10-20
I found this book interesting because of all the pictures it contains, and the questions it raises. Don't we all approach a subject from our own perspective?
Define "mystery" . . ........2001-06-27
This book is not only rather dull, it's also mis-named. The disappearance of Amelia Earhart, the fate of Martin Bormann and the LADY BE GOOD, and the German motivation in shooting down Leslie Howard's plane are almost the only "mysteries" investigated. "How close was Hitler to perfecting the atomic bomb?" is an interesting sidelight on the war, but it's not a mystery, nor is the self-sinking of the submarine TANG in 1944. Many of the illustrations included are pure padding and have little or nothing to do with the subject under discussion, and because the author is a Brit, he stretches to include details of British involvement in events in which they were very peripheral.

A useful supplementary text for history classes........2004-03-17
"The Global Experience" is a collection of excerpts from various historical primary-source documents, this particular volume ranging from the beginning of civilization up through the year 1550. The documents are arranged chronologically by civilization and time period, and each one is briefly introduced with appropriate background information provided. The book also offers "Questions to Consider" for each document, which may help the student focus on what is important about a particular piece. Occasionally two documents will be compared, showing similarities in theme from culture to culture.
This book is not, however, intended to be a history text in and of itself. It merely offers supplementary material, which may be incorporated into a curriculum. The background information given is only what is necessary for the understanding of the text, and does not go in-depth. The readability of the text varies from piece to piece, as is to be expected. Some are very easy to read and comprehend, and others take more work to get through. Also, it should be emphasized that the writings given here are, for the most part, ONLY excerpts, and not the full text. If you are going to be studying a particular piece of writing in depth, you would want to find a full-text version, and not use this book.
Topics covered include four different creation stories, Sumerian legend, the ancient Near East, ancient Egypt, acient China, Greek epics and poetry, Hindu writings, Buddhist writings, classical India, classical Greek and Roman texts, the rise of Christianity, the rise of Islam, Islamic law and culture, Germanic tribes, feudalism and chivalry, Africa, Byzantium, scholasticism and mysticism, Medieval life and government, the Mongols, the Black Death, the rise of the Ottoman Empire, Russia, the Renaissance and Reformation, and the Age of Exploration. This fourth edition includes 18 new texts not found in the older third edition.
