        Book Description

This book contains a comprehensive and well-researched study of the relationship between municipal amnesty laws and developing principles of international criminal law. It pursues a path towards defining criteria for reconciling these two delicate fields of transitional justice. It concludes with a concrete proposal for the international community of states. `O'Shea's study on the limits of amnesty in the context of recent developments in international criminal law, particularly the creation of a permanent International Criminal Court, is essential reading for scholars and practitioners. His examination of amnesty in the context of national experience and international expectation covers new ground, and presents a challenging Protocol for the consideration of States which is both innovative and realistic'. Book Description

If, as Immanuel Kant once said, we are guided by the starry sky above and the moral law within, then, thanks to David Levy, we can now conceptualize Kant's adage at least half-way. David Levy's Guide to the Night Sky is designed to satisfy observers who have just become interested in the sky and want to navigate their way around it. By stirring the imagination and putting observation in a framework of personal adventure, Levy explains how to discover the Moon, planets, comets, meteors, and distant galaxies through a small telescope. Fully updated, the new edition includes:
      • A new section on the computer-controlled telescopes and how to use this new technology;
      • One new chapter on how charge-coupled devices (CCDs) have revolutionized the art of astronomical observation
      • An explanation of how a new variable star is discovered and studied, based on Levy's personal experience Levy explores topics as diverse as the features of the Moon from night to night; how to observe constellations from both urban and rural observation sites; how best to view the stars, nebulae, and galaxies; and how to map the sky. David H. Levy is one of the world's foremost amateur astronomers. He has discovered seventeen comets, seven using a telescope in his own backyard, and had a minor planet, Asteroid 3673 Levy, named in his honor. As a respected astronomer, he is best known for being the co-discoverer of the famous Shoemaker-Levy9 comet in 1994. Levy is frequently interviewed by the media and succeeded Carl Sagan as science columnist for Parade magazine. He has written and contributed to a number of books, most recently The Scientific American Book of the Cosmos (St. Martin's, 2000), Advanced Skywatching (Time Life, 2000), and Deep-Sky Companions (Cambridge, 2000).

            Book Description

Recent years have seen the rise to prominence of ever more sophisticated philosophical and scientific critiques of the ideas marketed under the name of Darwinism. In Uncommon Dissent, mathematician and philosopher William A. Dembski brings together essays by leading intellectuals who find one or more aspects of Darwinism unpersuasive. As Dembski explains, Darwinism has gathered around itself an aura of invincibility that is inhospitable to rational discussion—to say the least: "Darwinism, its proponents assure us, has been overwhelmingly vindicated. Any resistance to it is futile and indicates bad faith or worse." Indeed, those who question the Darwinian synthesis are supposed, in the famous formulation of Richard Dawkins, to be ignorant, stupid, insane, or wicked.

The hostility of dogmatic Darwinians like Dawkins has not, however, prevented the advent of a growing cadre of scholarly critics of metaphysical Darwinism. The measured, thought-provoking essays in Uncommon Dissent make it increasingly obvious that these critics are not the brainwashed fundamentalist buffoons that Darwinism's defenders suggest they are, but rather serious, skeptical, open-minded inquirers whose challenges pose serious questions about the viability of Darwinist ideology. The intellectual power of their contributions to Uncommon Dissent is bracing.

4 out of 5 stars Food for Thought.......2007-06-27

To me, there's more to life than is either explainable or predictable exclusively by Darwin's theory. Where did the first cell come from, anyway, and why was it so amenable to the evolution process? THis book offers several discussions as to the sometimes mistaken view of Darwinism as being a proved theory on a par with other theories of science, gravity or energy. Darwinism can't predict future interactions or allow repeatable experiments, for example.
Some authors have more of a religious bent than others but, overall, the discussions do not dwell on magical creation. The point is that there is something more going on than just shaking a planet full of dirt and 'evolving' Shania Twain and Albert Einstien. David Berlinski is particularly brilliant, well spoken and knowlegable. Search other of his writings on the web.
I'd keep a pretty open mind as to whether Darwinism, exclusively, can explain all the phenomina associated with life on Earth.

            5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-05-13

This collection is must reading for anyone who has an interest in thinking about Darwinism and well-written responses to various types of Darwinism. No cheap shots or half-baked arguments found here.

All are carefully selected pieces - and each is worth taking the time to mentally engage.

            5 out of 5 stars Darwin's delusions examined.......2007-03-11

Essentially the theory of evolution can be said to endorse by implication the claim that birds fly because they are afraid of cats. Enough said.

4 out of 5 stars Creationism without the forcing of Religion.......2006-12-22

This is a very good collection of writings and essays that merely say that Creationism is just as viable as Darwinism. Good read that really makes you think. It also makes clear arguments and clear and decisive points about Darwinism. It is also nice because it's Secular creationism and not doesn't spout religion at you. It allows you to make up your own mind and not to be influenced by one theory or another but to keep your mind open. And in the long run thats all that matters.

5 out of 5 stars A pick for college-level collections strong in either science or philosophy.......2006-09-07

It's hard to easily categorize this: both science and philosophy blend in Uncommon Dissent: Intellectuals Who Find Darwinism Unconvincing, making it a pick for college-level collections strong in either science or philosophy. Contributors discuss Darwinian evolutionary theory with an eye to revealing its problems: Dembski gathers essays from leading intellectuals who provide strong counter-arguments against Darwin's ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Mike is one of the best Southern writers today........2005-07-13

One never appreciates the advantages of living in a small community such as Lake Wylie until you run into an old friend.

Recently, during one of my many sojourns to Jac-Lyns, AKA our local post office, I happened upon local folklorist extraordinaire Mike Marr. For those unfamiliar with Mike Marr, let me tell you who he is: Mike is one of the best writers I have ever encountered. And trust me, I have known quite a few journalists/columists/reporters in my 25 + years of working for publications.

Recently, Mike published a collection of his Lake Wylie Magazine columns in a volume called: "Hero of Bullfrog Hill." I asked him for a copy and he cryptically wrote a personal note: " For Gene... Who has already read them all..." Well, that's probably true, since Marr was the most poetic columnist I even published when I was editor of Lake Wylie Magazine from 1997-2004.

Mike has a Mark-Twainish style to his writing, which has always impressed me. Where many columnsits err is that they try to preach & convince us that their way is the ONLY way --- in 500 words or less.

Mike never did that. He is folksy, real & talks about life experiences to which we all can relate. Skinny-dipping. Snow-sledding. Ghost tales?

Well maybe... but you have to read this great collection of stories to see how much is fact & how much is fiction.

Reading the writing of Mike Marr is like watching a sunset on Lake Wylie. It's beautiful, everyday and awe-inspiring.

Marr suggests that his book is great fodder for the "morning constitutional" that most men experience. I suggest his volume is better than that.

Leave the morning newspaper on the porch and read his stories. You will be more than fulfilled by what he delivers.

For a country boy, Marr sure knows how to market his writings.

–Gerald J. Higgins, major general, U.S. Army (ret.), from the Foreword

In the predawn darkness of D-Day, an elite fighting force struck the first blows against Hitler’s Fortress Europe. Braving a hail of enemy gunfire and mortars, bold invaders from the sky descended into the hedgerow country and swarmed the meadows of Normandy. Some would live, some would die, but all would fight with the guts and determination that made them the most famous U.S. Army division in World War II: the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles.”

George Koskimaki was part of the 101st Airborne’s daring parachute landing into occupied France that day. Now, drawing on more than five hundred firsthand accounts–including the never-before-published experiences of the trailblazing pathfinders and glider men–Koskimaki re-creates those critical hours in all their ferocity and terror. Told by those who ultimately prevailed–ordinary Americans who faced an extraordinary challenge–D-Day with the Screaming Eagles is the real history of that climactic struggle beyond the beachhead.

5 out of 5 stars Deatiled overview of the 101st DDay experience.......2004-06-29

This book gives detailed information on each regiment and battalion of the 101st and its operations on d day. The storyteling is strictly informational, but keeps you excited. Some info and maps are very helpful, this book finally helped me to recreate the famous "jeep ride of Col. Sink", as it gives detailed maps of most important events of the 101st.
If your interested in the 101st or D day or in WWII in general, buy it, it is packed with information.

This book is definitly not worth the $15.37. If you have a school project or thinking of going to Peru save your money, not that much information in the whopping 32 pages. As a grandma buying this for my grandson I felt it was a ripoff.

The book makes an important contribution to the discussion on the nature and impact of current processes of regionalization and globalization. NGOs criticism on Mexico’s weak enforcement of environmental policy could not be ignored or silenced in the NAFTA debate. In the end, a supplemental environmental agreement was added to the trade agreement: a unique event.

4 out of 5 stars An Academic Perspective on NAFTA and the Environment.......2000-06-13

Coming from the Netherlands, Barbara Hogenboom has achieved a honest and relatively impartial review of how environmental issues were treated in the negotiations which led to the creation of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the North America Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC). Although her approach to the subject is obviously academic, in this work her writing makes use of a journalist style that should be accessible to most readers without a background in political studies.

Based on a review of relevant literature and interviews of participants both within and outside Mexico, Hogenboom's work provides insight not only on the development of NAFTA, but also into Mexican environmental policy-making in the early 1990s. Hogenboom digs behind alarmist headlines and reveals the subtle agendas of government policy-makers and the NAFTA negotiators. Hogenboom is also careful not to overstate the role of NAFTA in altering the Mexican government's approach to the environment. Instead, she paints the wider picture of environmental policy development occurring within Mexico including the centralized and authoritarian tendencies of Mexico's PRI government, the limited influence of the US government diplomacy and World Bank investments, and the slowly evolving role of Mexican environmental non-governmental organizations (eNGOs) in influencing government decision-making.

Hogenboom's strongest point is also her weakest. Hogenboom's work is well documented and is not given to the sort of mild alarmist statements of similar books written for activists rather than academics. It is refreshing to have a relatively impartial voice comment on the debate of NAFTA and the environment, yet her academic detachment can reach the point of causing the reader to lose interest. In short, do not expect this book to keep you awake on a long flight nor keep you sufficiently engaged to read it all in one siting.

Although this book is slowly becoming dated, it is still worth consulting should you have a passion for the Mexican environment, policy development, or a general curiosity into what happened during the secretive process leading to the creation of NAFTA. Should your interest be in the Mexican environment, I highly recommend that this is an excellent book to read alongside Joel Simon's "Endangered Mexico" and Lane Simonian's "Defending the Land of the Jaguar".
