How did life originate? Well, it's a wide open question. As Popa tells us, an explanation that is missing a critical step won't do. There are plenty of clues. But Popa shows us that there are still many approaches to putting the clues together.

There are plenty of approaches that are being pursued today. Popa tells us about many of them. Still, let's remind ourselves of some of them. One is to look for fossil evidence and DNA evidence of our earliest ancestors. Say that these turn out to be hyperthermophiles. Use that information, as well as the stability properties of RNA and DNA, to deduce the environment life originated in. A second idea is to look at the way we synthesize RNA (or DNA) today. Use that information to speculate about how the first RNA and DNA evolved. A third idea is to look at the self-assembly properties of entities for clues. A fourth idea is to note the similarity of ATP and the nucleic acid adenine. Assume this is no coincidence! A fifth idea is to do all sorts of experiments with collections of monomers and see if they arrange themselves into replicating strings. A sixth idea is to concentrate on computer simulations of all this. Computer simulations of the origin of replication show that there are some dangers, such as the "selfish RNA catastrophe," the "short-circuit catastrophe," the "population collapse catastrophe," and simply the risk of too many replication errors. Draw conclusions from the fact that these hazards were successfully avoided. A seventh idea is to at least answer the question of what came first, replication, metabolism, or cellularization. And so on. It seems that there is a great deal we aren't at all sure of.

Popa starts with the issue of the issue of the development of cellularization, metabolism, and replication. He asserts that since all are needed for life, they must have evolved together, not serially. He states that the ATP coincidence probably is unimportant, with ATP's use as an energy carrier being a late development. And he takes on the mathematical modelers by stating that they generally omit first order effects by not tracing the energy flow and the degradation of the evolving entities.

The issues Popa dwells on most are the energy sources, bioinformation, chirality, and the origin of specificity (as opposed to "metabolism" or "homeostasis"). Of these, the part on chirality was the most interesting to me. Popa discusses the implication that life's chirality implies the existence of some large-scale chiral driver, such as rotating vortices or asymmetries in right and left circularly polarized light.

There's also quite a bit of useful material about the definition of life. Popa is right to make the point that "life" and "living entities" are not at all synonymous.

Anyway, it is an interesting book about a tough problem: I'm glad I can just read about it and don't have to solve it!

There have been several recent breakthroughs in the supramolecular domain: larger molecular components are being synthesised; 2D layers involving multiple recognition sites; crystals with intricate building blocks are being designed; more components are being used in assembly and self-assembly `algorithms' (some having molecular weights as high as 15,000); and there is an increasing versatility in applications.
The difficulty in characterising and obtaining structural information on such large assemblies has increased to such a level that no single technique is now adequate. Various methods have now been upgraded and are being combined: X-ray diffraction (structures with hundreds of independent atoms), NMR, AFM/STM (manipulation of a single molecule), FAB/MS, time-resolved techniques up to the picosecond range, new computational approaches, and others.

Bashin' Bob Clarke takes loving care of his Heartache and Hunger Creek Baptist Church congregation while he coaches them toward their black belts in devil stomping. These delightful stories defy the choosing of a favorite, and McLemore's cartoon illustrations pack just the right punch to enliven them. Most of all, while you are laughing, you will acknowledge and appreciate God's gift of friendship, community, parenthood, eagle-eyed newspaper editors, and hard-working preachers.

Bashin' Bob is Great Fun.......2002-02-13

What a fun book for the whole family! The 43 short stories are quick and easy to read and loaded with slapstick humor. The stories are centered around an imaginary town in rural Georgia and all the folks who live there. There's Bashin' Bob, he's the preacher, Goat Herder (he's the newspaper editor who writes down all the shenannigans around town), Camouflage Clark (the town's best hunter), Miss Dreama and a whole passle of other hilarious characters.
I particularly liked the story of the 14 year old girl who wanted to marry the 15 year old boy. After a chat with Bashin' Bob, she decided it wasn't such a good idea after all, but you'll have to read the story to know why. Many of the stories have a life lesson to them, but they are all fun and funny and a delicious look at some typical Southern personalities.
This book is great for reading together with the family, or just on your own. But don't be surprised if you find your self laughing out loud. Bashin' Bob is whopping great fun.

Story's Concise Historical Atlas is an excellent overview of the war, probably the best brief treatment I've seen. The maps are clear, brightly colored. Most of them are easy to grasp. The main battles and campaigns are well covered. There also are some nice surprises, such as continental Africa, Spain, the Chinese Communist Long March, the building of the bomb, and the Japanese camp system, that war surveys don't usually include. The maps stretch over a huge 50-year period, which is a big help in conveying the roots and consequences of the war. The commentaries that go with each map are also good. The writing is crisp, with lots of good basic information, useful insights. They have a dramatic quality that's quite powerful and makes you want to keep turning the pages. Some people might think there's too much coverage of the Eastern Front and mainland Asia, and there are a few errors and typos that need to be corrected in a future edition. Overall, though, a successful effort. Oxford is to be commended.

Useful introduction to Second World War.......2005-12-17

In depicting the most wide-ranging conflict in human history, one of the greatest challenges for any historian of the Second World War is the one of making the conflict accessible - a challenge that is even greater when that person is seeking to offer a "concise" account. In this respect, Ronald Story's effort is a modest success. In this book he offers fifty maps detailing various aspects of the conflict, from Europe immediately prior to the First World War to Asia after the second one. Each is accompanied on the opposite page with text that provides a short summary and analysis of the subject of the map; when combined they offer a short, accessible overview of the conflict from its early 20th century origins to its mid-century consequences.

While a good starting point for readers seeking an introduction to the conflict, the atlas also has something for more knowledgeable students of the war as well. The maps themselves are clear, colorful, and easy to read, providing a nice supplement for anyone frustrated with the paucity or illegibility of maps in other books on the war. For the most part, the maps focus on the strategic and political aspects of the war. Only six battles (El Alamein, Kursk, the Battle of the Bulge, Berlin, Midway, and Leyte Gulf) receive dedicated maps, and even these are short on details that can be found elsewhere. Europe receives the majority of the attention; though the Eastern Front is fairly well covered, the bulk of the maps dealing with the war in Asia focus largely on the Allies' "island-hopping" campaigns. Nevertheless, for those readers seeking a handy overview of the "geography of the conflict" (as the subtitle advertises), this a good book to get.
