4 out of 5 stars Helped me write MUCH BETTER descriptions.......2004-02-01

I had to read this book for work. The author suggests reading one chapter a day, which is pretty much how I did it, with one exception.

I found the material to be much easier to digest when I read it only one chapter a day. I wasn't bombarded with all of this new stuff that I had to remember and implement into my descriptions.

Having all of the pictures really helped because it illustrates the points that the author is trying to get across.

I suggest keeping the book close by when your brain just goes to mush and you can't think of the benefit of this gadget. Reread Appendix A and try to answer the 20 questions in there. It will help you come up with something.

If your description just doesn't make much sense or parts are out of order and you can't figure out why, reread Appendix B, it have all of the "rules" the author presented in the book with a brief explanation of each.

4 out of 5 stars A copywriter's resource that really sizzles!.......2000-04-19

Very helpful! Typical of many books written by veteran admen, the text is broken up into bite-sized chunks with snappy headlines, but in this case the format serves the message well. Lewis' tone is chatty and informative, there are lots of good ad examples, and best of all, each chapter begins with a brief writing assignment. I found it a valuable resource.

3 out of 5 stars A classic in astronomy, but not worth the price for students.......1997-12-06

Here, Spitzer introduces many fundamental concepts in astronomy, and at the time it was written was perhaps the only single publication that covered all of the topics in the table of contents from a fairly fundamental level. When I paid $80 for this book for an Interstellar Medium course about 5 years ago, the instructor said he would not have required it had he known the price. Now it stands at $112! If this material is important to you and you do not have a well developed graduate level curriculum to study from, then perhaps it is worthhwhile, otherwise I recommend "Astrophysics of Gaseous Nebulae and Active Galactic Nuclei" by Donald E. Osterbrock for $36 as an excellent substitute, though you won't find much on dust grains and kinetics in it. For those topics you should go to review articles and a statistical mechanics text anyway! Spitzer was a great astronomer and he wrote what was at the time an indispensible book, but at this price think carefully before you buy.

        1 out of 5 stars Multiple typos.......2003-12-11

I was required to purchase this text for my nurse anesthesia curriculum. I found it poorly written with confusing explanations of simple material that I had learned from previous courses.
The text was full of typographical errors as well as gross math errors. Throughout the book there are example problems worked out to show the reader how to solve formula. This would be very helpful if the text had been proof-read by anyone. There are blatant math errors that make the reader wonder about the validity of the explanation if simple math computations are wrong.
I would not recommend this text.

With all the attention focused on environmental issues and the decline of Arctic conditions, a book like Canada and Arctic North America: An Environmental History proves an essential 'must' for any college-level or specialty collection focusing on Northern Hemisphere environmental conditions, politics, and science. Part of the 'Nature and Human Societies' collection, it offers an environmental history surveying interactions between people and the land in Canada and North America, from the effects of logging and the drive for new energy sources to the effects of modernization. A 'must' for any serious collection offering in-depth environmental histories.

          Book Description

In recent years, the study of the theory of Brownian motion has become a powerful tool in the solution of problems in mathematical physics. This self-contained and readable exposition by leading authors, provides a rigorous account of the subject, emphasizing the "explicit" rather than the "concise" where necessary, and addressed to readers interested in probability theory as applied to analysis and mathematical physics. A distinctive feature of the methods used is the ubiquitous appearance of stopping time. The book contains much original research by the authors (some of which published here for the first time) as well as detailed and improved versions of relevant important results by other authors, not easily accessible in existing literature.

Be comforted in believing a terrible justice awaits the wicked...a place for stealers, murderers, betrayers. But what shall become of the annoying...the appalling...the villain picking his nose at the next table? The clueless wench who's cut you off in traffic? The neighbor whose cat has befouled your tires relentlessly, repeatedly? They'll get theirs, and it won't be pretty. Take a journey through a comic underworld where the rude and crude pay for their sins in the bowels of poetic justice. This high-language, lowbrow saga squats on the shoulders of Dante's Inferno, using classical verse to besmirch everything deserving. From these pages, the gross have nowhere to hide. Abandon Every Hope is for classics and comics readers alike. It is painstakingly written poetry that reads easily. But danger lurks for those who are vile and who cannot laugh at themselves. They will know what place awaits, and knowing, must Abandon Every Hope.

          5 out of 5 stars Satire/Satyr.......2000-10-12

This is one of the most exciting new reads of the year! A deft, masterly portrayal of a greeting card writer at the epicenter of the swirling, chaotic absurdity that is modern American life, Abandon Every Hope is a pirandellian filibuster of a novel. During the first few chapters, I was a bit skeptical about the use of iambic pentameter---a stylistic tribute to its literary antecedent, Dante's Inferno---but once I got used to the rhythmic pull of the prose, I was laughing out loud at the depiction of the self-important, jejune cast of characters caught in a downward spiral of a comic-hellish New Orleans. I recommend this book if you have ever shook your head and wondered what happens to boorish, narcissistic people who go about their lives oblivious to their effect on others, but beware, in this novel's highly polished prose you may find yourself staring back.

          Book Description

Civilization might have been spared much of the damage suffered in the world wars this century if the influence of Clausewitz's On War  had been blended with and balanced by a knowledge of Sun-tzu's The Art of Warfare.  --B.H. Liddel Hart

For two thousand years, Sun-tzu's The Art of Warfare was the indispensable volume of warcraft. Although his work is the first known analysis of war and warfare, Sun-tzu struck upon a thoroughly modern concept: "The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting."        Karl von Clausewitz, the canny military theorist who famously declared that war is a continuation of politics by other means, also claims paternity of the notion "total war."   His is the magnum opus of the era of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic vars.

Now these two great military minds are made to share the same tent, metaphorically speaking, in The Book of War. What a bivouac it is, and what a conversation into the night.

Military writer Ralph Peters has written a new Introduction for this Modern Library edition.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Interesting mix: Unabridged Clausewitz and Sun Tzu.......2001-05-07

I have the Regnery edition- "War, Politics, and Power" and I've read Sun Tzu. So I offer my review on his writings and recommend this book. These books were widely disseminated in Red China, Nazi Germany, and the Soviet Union.

Essentially, this book contains the best writings of the German military theorist as well as the Chinese military theoriest Sun Tzu. Clauswitz, the Prussian Sun Tzu, effectively brought the concept of total war into acceptability. Gone our the days Antonie Henri Jomini's chilvarious code of conduct and honor- Civilians will not only be subject to attack - they'll bear the brunt of the battle in an age of total war. Several points are made- which are crucial to surmising Clausewitzian theory- 1) "War is the continuation of state policy by other means;" 2) "All war is based on the art of deception;" 3) "No one starts war... without first being clear in his mind what he intends to achieve by the war and how he intends to conduct it;" 4) War is "an act of force to compel our enemy to do our will." 5) "If the enemy is thrown off balance, he must not be given time to recover. Blow after blow must be struck in the same direction: the victor, in other words, must strike with all his strength... by daring to win all, will one really defeat the enemy."

This is an excellent combination- The concept of total war is a sound foundation for any student of military history. Piecing Tzu and Clausewitz in one complete compendium of total war military theory makes for an excellent volume of military theory.

5 out of 5 stars Two classics of world thought.......2000-06-20

As Caleb Carr points out in his series introduction, the study of war is the study of half of human history and nature, and is thus important. This is a great collection and a great introduction to that. These two books form a comprehensive study of the philosophy of war, mainly because they are so opposite in nature yet both generally correct. And, surprisingly, Sun-Tzu's maxims on a subject of the most horrendous violence are often quite beautiful. Extra points for the full, not abridged, version of Clausewitz, especially since he never finished the book. An excellent introduction by Ralph Peters.

4 out of 5 stars War Maniacs will enjoy.......2000-04-17

This book is for the total war maniac. If you are interested in the subject this book is for you. It is defintly worth your money. It explains a lot about his thoughts ideas and other things. It did get a bit tedious though......
