Central banks in Great Britain and the United States arose early in the financial revolution. The Bank of England was created in 1694 while the first Banks of the United States appeared in 1791–1811 and 1816–36, and were followed by the Independent Treasury, 1846–1914. These institutions, together with the Suffolk Bank and the New York Clearing House, exercised important central banking function before the creation of the Federal Reserve System in 1913. Significant monetary changes in the lives of these British and American institutions are examined within a framework that deals with the knowledge and behaviour of central bankers and their interactions with economists and politicians. Central Bankers’ behaviour has shown considerable continuity in the influence of incentives and their interest in the stability of the financial markets.

At the start of the American Civil War, neither side had warships on the Mississippi River, which was a vital strategic artery. In what would prove the vital naval campaign of the war, both sides fought for control of the river. While the Confederates relied on field fortifications and small gunboats, the Union built a series of revolutionary river ironclads. First commissioned in January 1862, these ironclads spent the next two years battling for control of the Mississippi, fighting in a string of decisive engagements that altered the entire course of the war. This book explains how these vessels worked, how they were constructed, how they were manned and how they were fought.

Great Book - technical details and great pictures.......2002-12-26

A number of books have been written about America's bloodiest conflict - the Civil War. This book concentrates on Union river ironclads, which formed the nation's first "brownwater navy." The book details the design and development of the ironclads, major operations involving them, and a catalog of vessels with specifications. What makes Konstam's book different is that it focuses solely on Union river ironclads and subsequently has more technical data and photos of these particular ships than any other tome that I have encountered. The book does focus on this particular class of ships somewhat in a vacuum and pays little attention to the overall strategy of the riverine campaign or wooden support vessels. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in naval warfare - especially those who enjoy reading about the transition from ships of wood to steel. Union River Ironclads has a wealth of technical information and dazzling full-color drawings and schematics of the ships. I have enjoyed both its academic utility and just looking at the pictures.

Author makes a pretty good case.......2006-03-27

In 1753 at Liege, Clementina Walkinshaw, mistress of Charles Edward Stuart, gave birth to the Young Pretender's only known child, Charlotte, later given the Jacobite title Duchess of Albany. (Being illegitimate, she had no claim to the succession.) Though she never married, Charlotte had three children by Prince Ferdinand de Rohan, who were raised in the strictest secrecy regarding their parentage; none were even mentioned in Charlotte's will of 1789. However, the author provides convincing documentation that the youngest of Charlotte's children, Marie Victoire de Rohan, was legitimated by her father and married a Polish nobleman named Nikorowisc. Their granddaughter, in turn, married Count Leonard Pininski and became the author's great-great-grandparents. Claiming descent from the exiled Stewarts is practically a cottage industry, but Pininski, whose mother was a Scot and who grew up in Britain, makes a good case for the validity of his particular line.

These studies underlie the new theory of intellectual change in this key period propounded in the introduction.
