How things used to be, not how they are today. Old processes, old way of doing things. Unfortunately, there's really nothing else out there to fill the gap - this may be the best available. Be warned, if you want to set up a proactive purchasing department, this is not how to do it.

Caveat Emptor.......2007-06-12

True, the book does not represent Hawking's latest views, but for those wishing to wade into the shallow end of Hawking's writing this is not bad.

Coming in at a short 112 pages, this heavily illustrated book gives one a opportunity to at least familiarize themselves with issues that Hawking gives much more detailed treatment to in his other works: A brief history of time, Black holes and Baby Universes and On the Shoulders of Giants.

One good for instance is his chapter on the arrow of time. In it Hawking observes that there is not only one but several arrows of time. Though he only talks about cosmic expansion, gravitation and the perceptual arrows of time (and not Kaon decay or the quantum arrow of time which may be the master arrow), one still gets the idea that there are physical reasons for why time assumes a directionality.

Another example is his final chapter on the quest for a theory of everything. Though now -- particularly with waning enthusiasm for string theory -- there is reasoned speculation that maybe there may never be a theory of everything, his chapter stills reflects how many view still view the search.

And finally, his chapter on black hole radiation harkens back to the research that originally put him on the map, his 1974 finding that black holes do indeed radiate and even given enough time will decay.

All together, Hawking's book shows the lucid explanatory power of one who both knows and knows how to explain.

So yes, by all means, read this book, but don't stop here and read the rest of his books too.

Advanced astrophysics for dummies.......2006-07-16

The general consensus is that the three greatest physicists of all time are Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. Unfortunately, Hawking is often known more for his lack of physical prowess than for his prowess in physics. He possesses a brilliant mind, and is also very effective at the writing of popular science. Hawking has an uncanny ability to make the incredibly complex ideas of astrophysics understandable to people who have difficulty balancing an algebraic equation.
Hawking is once again at the top of his game with this book. It is a collection of the seven popular lectures that he presented to the public. Their titles are:

*) Ideas about the universe
*) The expanding universe
*) Black holes
*) Black holes ain't so black
*) The origin and fate of the universe
*) The direction of time
*) The theory of everything

Each is fairly short; the ideas are explained without the reference to equations. There are many illustrations that give a visual explanation of concepts such as the curvature of space, the expansion and contraction of the universe and the direction of time.
If you have an interest in the fate of the universe but always felt that advanced astrophysics was beyond you, then this is the book for you. It doesn't explain everything, but it does show you the best current theories of how the universe started, how it is constructed and how it appears that it will end.

Early work of Hawking's he didn't want published now.......2004-08-07

On his website, http://www.hawking.org.uk/info/iindex.html, Hawking says that he wrote this years ago, it does not reflect his latest views (contrary to the cover blurb), and that he did not endorse its publication. I just wanted to pass this information along. There's a lot more reviews mentioning this for an earlier edition of this book, without "illustrated" in the title, so if you want to buy the book look at those first. Setting aside the misinformation in the advertising (for which I'm giving it one star), and the change in Hawking's views, it's a reasonable book.

makes a person think.......2004-08-04

I like reading alot and if you do too then go ahead an d read this one. Many times I will get a book that goes way over my head in terminology. This book is easy to comprehend and makes you think about "what if's", and "could this really be". Sort of like X-files meets reality. A must have for any one who believs in an outer existence.

A careful freshman could compile a better review than this........2006-05-26

This book is utterly staggering in its low quality, both in terms of Homerically incompetent editing and chemical errors. Many sentences appear to have been proofread drunk, if they were proofread at all. For instance, in some places the editor clearly converted all text to one font, converting Greek letters into Roman ones. Sometimes, bizarre substitutions are made for symbols; degree signs are replaced with a Greek gamma, and deltas are sometimes replaced with thetas. Integral signs (!) sometimes appear seemingly randomly in the middle of bonds in chemical structures. Spelling errors are uncountably frequent ("Diels-Adler" reaction, anyone?)

Of course, a far worse problem consists of errors in the chemistry itself. The organic section is especially atrocious. I honestly wonder whether the author was able to do better than a 'C' in beginning organic; if so, she should be ashamed of the slipshod job displayed. Particularly egregious errors include displaying a ketone hydrate with C=O double bonds (resulting in a hexavalent carbon atom), describing "quaternary amines" with no mention of the fact that they are, of course, positively-charged ammonium ions, and depicting the acylation of an amine with a ketone, rather than with an appropriately reactive carboxylic acid derivative (e.g. an acyl chloride or anhydride). Less ridiculously inane errors on more esoteric topics, which are also myriad, are even worse, as they run a far greater risk of confusing the reader.

For its prominence as a purveyor of study aids, the Princeton Review surely should be able to do better than this travesty of a reference.

Craking the GRE Chemistry test--2nd edition.......2005-07-23

This book is full of errors, in both the study section and the answer key. If you use this book as a study aid, you will learn to do chemistry incorrectly! The Princeton Review should proofread and correct error before publishing their books. This book is a disservice to chemistry applicants everywhere.

Save you money.

Only good for its Table of Contents!.......2005-01-21

This book (unfortunately, one of the only GRE Chemistry books out there) is filled with errors. Some of them are typos, and (even worse) some of them are blatant, chemically illogical errors.

If you try to study for the GRE using this book, it'll send you on a wild goose chase searching for other textbooks, to validate (or discredit) what's printed here. [In a way, that can be a good thing because you'll learn a lot from reading other textbooks. But of course, it can be a huge waste of time!]

I'd use this book for its Table of Contents, to serve as a list of topics. Then go elsewhere (like to your textbooks) to get the info you need and build your own study book.

Errors, but better than nothing........2004-07-16

Unlike tests such as the Psychology GRE, there really isn't much in the way of GRE Chemistry prep materials, excluding what is given on the GRE's site and a few obsolete or out of print books. I bought this book because it was the most modern and easy to find of books available.

I'm not sorry that I bought the book, but I would warn anybody else who is using this as their main study guide that the book does have a lot of problems, including:

1. Errors! Drawings of molecules are often incorrect (are missing bonds, have extra or missing substituents), graphs are sometimes incomplete, and a lot of diagrams have formatting errors that make the contents unclear. ALSO, take note that this book considers the compression of air into a smaller volume by a piston as negative work, when the GRE test itself considers that positive work.

2. Level of difficulty of the review chapters are not at the same level as the questions on the practice test. The questions on the practice test are trickier and often are you-know-it-or-you-don't questions that aren't covered in the text of the book.

3. Not a very good review of PChem beyond macroscopic topics such as entropy and free energy. Also had what I considered a bad review of galvanic/electrolytic cells.

I'd still recommend this book if you are looking for an inexpensive review of what topics to cover, but I'd get a couple good general Chemistry books to cover those topics in better detail.

Ask your professor for the ACS exams - or to take them at least to get a feel for the types of questions you will get asked.

An absolute bible of information.......2007-08-13

BUT... you can't be scared off by technical stuff. Hatcher has a way of explaining it for the layman, but most of the book is just insights into firearms technology as seen by an insider. Great read. Buy it before any other gun book. May I also suggest Hatcher's other masterpiece, Book of the Garand.

Hatcher's Notebook. Still a Classic.......2007-05-15

I'd read snatches from the book in our local Public Library from time to time. Finally decided to treat myself to the luxury of having it on hand all the time. Whilst it may be considered to be a little outdated now (2007) it's still a classic and an absolute mine of knowledge. Provides a fascinating and factual account of the development of modern 20th Century Small Arms, ranging from bolt action rifles, automatic pistols, Machine Guns and Sub Machine Guns. Add to this the development of modern smokeless powders, primers and the treatment of steel, then you have a veritable fount of information that is still relevant today.

The classic gun crank's book. If you have the slightest curiosity about any aspect of firearms design, ballistics, or history, Hatcher's been there & done that. One of those books you can pick up, open to any page, and start reading.

Fascinating classic publication. Hatcher was a firearms/explosives expert with the US army covering both world wars. Much detail on vintage firearms and their virtues and defects. Reports on individuals who managed to blow themselves up, mostly by accident. Details of which way up bullets come back down when fired vertically from a machine gun. Etc. A lot of the technical stuff is probably long out of date, but well worth a read.

A must for anyone interested in small arms.......2006-08-16

This book is a wealth of knowledge, from telling you what happens when various object are shoved down your rifle's barrel to breaking down the serial numbers and receiver composition of 1903 rifles. This book contains almost every bit of weird or not readily available information a firearms enthusiast or gunsmith could want and makes a great addition to any referance material.

In recent years, C has become the programming language most often chosen by "serious" programmers; those who program for a living. C's rich set of operators and library functions allows programmers to write powerful, concise, and elegant code. Furthermore, C compilers exist for virtually every type of computer, and C programs are portable between different types of computers. Perhaps the main advantage of C over other programming languages is its versatility. On the one hand, C is a powerful general-purpose language that supports structured and modular programming languages; but at the same time, it provides access to lower-level facilities that most other languages hide from the programmer. Essential C is intended for students who have had no prior programming experience. Providing a simple and brief introduction to programming in C makes this text suitable for a first semester, freshman level course. Only the basics a students needs to understand and write useful C programs are presented and explanations using computer jargon are avoided. Examples are referred to whenever possible. The topics have been carefully chosen for their relevance to practical scientific and engineering programming. Although the text is written with the scientific and engineering students in mind, it should be suitable in other disciplines as well.

This is, by far, the best book for the beginning programmer. The prose is clear and intelligent. The example problems and the exercise problems are interesting.

If you are looking for a programming book for the first time, or if you wish you had picked up a good programming book the first time around, then this book is for you.

Book Description

In 1989 the international community banned the international trade in elephant ivory; three years later the ban was renewed. Dr. Harland believes the ivory ban is the most controversial--and most misunderstood--piece of international wildlife law ever made. His book, Killing Game, seeks to unravel some of the misunderstandings, and it attempts to determine if international law can be an effective tool for the conservation of wildlife and if international law has served the African elephant well. Part I is an extended investigation of how and why international law is used so badly by the conservation community, and how it could be used better. Here Dr. Harland focuses on the problem of which laws are complied with and which are not; in the process he shows the importance of factors of compliance in determining the degree to which laws will be followed. In Part II he examines the status of the African elephant in international law in light of these factors. This book will be of interest to those involved in formulating international law, as well as the conservation community in general.
