Red dragon in orbit.......2007-01-09

China is clearly one of the space players in this century. Her resources are ample, both regarding technical knowhow and intellectual power, there is an unfailing sense of the ultimate goal - manned presence outside the Earth, and the intermediate goals - using the space for earthly purposes, are well understood. The Chinese space programme dates from the fifties, when the US, to their ultimate regret, evicted one of the fine minds who, at that time, was busy pioneering American astronautics. Political unrest - to say the least - on and off threatened to derail the development of missile technology, launchers and satellite technology. The space leaders come through as steadfast in the turmoil of the times, and as the political leadership in China moved from revolutionary fervour onto controlled economic evolution, so the space programme has moved more steadily tovards orderly development. All this and more are presented in this book, which bears the Harvey hallmark of being well researched, lucidly expositioned and showing deep insight in the subject at hand. I read it as one reads a novel of suspence and mystery, it now occupies a honored place along my other reference litterature on space.
When, during the coming years, we await new Chinese exploits in space, we need the understanding put forth in this book on the Chinese approach to development. Harvey illustrates how, in face of adversities, the Chinese space leaders, like the proverbial turtle, contrive to move slowly but inexorably towards their goals, when the hares in and of the United States fritters away resources by jumping hither and yon. It may well be that the tortoise yet overtakes the hare, if not in a race to the surface of the Moon, then to the sands of Mars.

impressive advances in an extended long march.......2006-12-07

China is still a developing country. But it has the distinction of being only the third country to launch a human into space, after Russia and the US. Harvey tells of the arduous path that China took. There have been the driving forces of international prestige and the building of a credible nuclear deterrent. The latter has required the ability to launch missiles into space in a controlled manner.

Harvey has conducted impressive research into a subject still heavily shrouded in secrecy. He describes many successes made by the Chinese. But also failures. Though the reader should remember that Russia and America have had their share of disasters, including the loss of lives.

The text also shows that in recent years, the Chinese space program has increasingly turned to commercial applications. Notably satellite imaging of the earth and communications. This reflects China's massive growth, with the increased need for such tasks as better analysis of weather patterns for agriculture. Also, the space program has started to perform more scientific research. All of this is a good sign for the future, both for China and the rest of the world.

The New Kid on the Space Block.......2006-01-01

For those in the West with little overall knowlwdge of the Chinese space effort, this is the primer. The book provides a fun read through the preperations and efforts to launch the first Chinese human to space orbit. Brian Harvey provides very useful insight to those who are looking globally in the human quest for space access. The book provides hope that the third nation to launch humans to space will mature and take serious the rhetoric of building a space station, or better yet, a Chinese program to put humans on the Moon. Harvey's book would have been made better with utilization of color photos splashed about the book.

If you are a fan of The Tick, or just a fan of superheroes in general, you will love this wacky and hilarious tale. The author has a wonderful imagination, and his hero's over-the-top antics never failed to make me laugh. There is more to the story than just chuckles, however; beneath all the humor, there is a serious message on what it means to truly be a hero.

I had no idea what to expect when I started reading this book. I know the author personally, but this is the first of his writings I have read.
I really enjoyed the lighthearted fun that gets poked at just about everyone. The humor is good, well placed, and fluid throughout the book.
Tired of the regular superhero scene? This is the place to be. Talk about misfits in the superhero world... Talk about the AMA - 'Bastards!' <- you have to read the book to get this one...

Not Enough Space.......2007-03-29

A fine intro to the subject, but it makes for somewhat dry reading. A men-at-arms title also does not have nearly the space for plates or text that this broad of a period deserves, but the author does an impressive job of describing the equipment of not only the classic legionaries, but also of both infantry and mounted auxiliary cohorts. The plates are also pretty good.

A Good Little Reference Book.......2006-03-23

The author and illustrator did an excellent job of breaking down the various items of Roman armor and weapons. The author's descriptions of the various shields, swords, and body armor is very detailed. The illustrator also does an excellent job. The book contains several pages of color drawings which depict various Roman soldiers at different points in history. The photographs in the book, however, do not show authentic artifacts. They do show accurate recreations of Roman hardware. In addition to the book's analysis of Roman war material, it contains a very concise chronology of Roman history. There is also a listing of where the various legions were stationed around the world. Bottom line: This is a great little reference book on Roman weapons and armor. At 40 pages, it is also a quick read.

Excellent book for starting your research!.......2001-11-13

This book has been around since the mid-1980's. It is well worth adding to your library of Roman Military books! The color drawings are not as fancy as the new style Osprey, but they show the details of Uniforms and equipments. The photographs and line drawings are excellent and make this well worth adding. Modern gladius copies use these sketches as the pattern for the decorations on scabbards. The descriptions and introductions of the Roman equipment are a good place to start learning.

Don't expect the artistic styles of later Osprey works, instead, you will find good scholarship from a master craftsman of Roman military equipment.

Good Writing but bad pictures.......1999-08-11

I thought the writing of The Roman Army from Caesar to Trajan was good but the pictures are a whole other story. The Pictures are way to jazzed up. There filled with fakey dramatic expressions. If you want a good Roman Army book Get Republican Roman Armies 200-104 BC.

Strange and compelling - a unique book.......2000-06-10

This is a very beautiful book. It abounds with treasuered monuments and the marvels of nature across the globe. It is a book for conservationists, sponsered by UNESCO and as such it takes a turn that most books of its kind do not.

What struck me immediately about this book was that the pictures are "different". After a few minutes I realized why. These pictures succeed in making all of these glorious sights somehow more real, more tangible and infinitely more accessible. Sometimes the traditional view is taken from another angle and it shows the section of the building that is crumbling. Often there are people photographs where it's uncommone to see them. Overall, the color is softer, more human than most large picture books and the result is a very beautiful book.

The book is divided by country with informative text in each section. Bear in mind that I bought this as a picture book. Yet I found myself reading the text over and over.

Each item is explained with its location, a description, and its significance, but that is such a dry way to explain this book.

The book has history and life on every page.

UNESCO is dedicated to saving so many things. I will try just to list some of the gorgeous items in these pages: Machu Piccu, Iguazu Falls, Lord Howe Island, The Mausoleum of the first Qin Emperor, Mon St. Michel, Tikal, Ellora Caves, Darien National Park in Panama, Chan Chan, Auschwitz, Tower of Elem, Garajonay National Park, Carthage.

This is a very stirring book. I wish I could do it justice
