Book Description

"A brilliantly conceived and lucidly written exposition of the most important topic on the frontier of modern finance. This book takes the mystery out of derivatives. Bravo!"—John H. Langbein, Professor, Yale Law School

"Derivatives for Decision Makers is a first in explaining derivatives to those who need to understand them. It explains what derivatives are, how they can be used as risk management tools, and what managers and decision makers need to know about the subject. Not only is the technical substance superb, but the form is accessible to all decision makers."—Afsaneh Mashayekhi Beschloss, Director, The World Bank Group

"Derivatives for Decision Makers is an excellent resource for both users and providers of derivative products, regardless of the reader's level of sophistication. The recent highly publicized derivatives problems are objectively reviewed by the authors who contribute important and sensible recommendations to avoid similar situations in the future."—Dipak K. Rastogi, Executive Vice President and former Head of Global Derivatives, Citibank, N. A.

"Derivatives can play a critical role in achieving corporate financing and investment strategies. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned practitioner, Crawford and Sen present a superb roadmap with well-chosen, real-world illustrations. Their vivid insights make this book a 'must-read' for corporate and pension fund managers."—Sandra S. Wijnberg, Vice President & Assistant Treasurer, PepsiCo, Inc.

"Crawford and Sen have done a fine job of making derivatives comprehensible for managers who need to understand the basic features and uses of these instruments. This coverage, together with the book's unique emphasis on senior management's fiduciary obligations to the firm's shareholders, sets this book apart from other attempts to make derivatives accessible to senior management. This book is an important read."—John F. Marshall, Executive Director, International Association of Financial Engineers and Professor of Financial Engineering, Polytechnic University

Derivatives are the power tools that enable users to analyze components of risk and return inherent in an investment or a business. The popularity of derivative use in the marketplace has surged in recent years, spurring financial innovation and better risk management. Yet this popular instrument is double-edged: derivatives are as risky as they are beneficial. In light of recent, highly publicized disasters—the Orange County bankruptcy and the Barings fiasco—it is imperative that business and finance professionals have a current and basic knowledge of this complicated and venturesome field.

If you are a shareholder, director, or other decision maker in a company utilizing derivatives, it is important that you know how to maximize the benefits of derivatives and minimize the damage that they can cause. Now, two leading financial experts provide the solid principles you need to understand and properly use derivative products and structured financing. Starting upwards from the ground floor, this straightforward, no-nonsense resource is replete with tables, graphs, and common examples and common sense, offering invaluable information on:

Whether you're a manager, director, attorney, accountant, corporate executive, or corporate shareholder, this comprehensive book will prove to be an invaluable guide on utilizing and handling derivatives wisely, resourcefully, and successfully.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!!.......2002-08-17

I loved this book. It was full of information that came alive. This book takes a dry, complex topic, and makes it exciting. It is a must read!!!

2 out of 5 stars Don't know derivatives? Me neither!.......1997-12-03

I really hoped that this book would explain the use of derivatives (a financial risk management tool) is a simple way, but alas, it was still too highbrow for a layperson like me. Perhaps I should have paid more attention in math class, but I still don't really understand how, when, or why to use them. However, I will persevere and find a book that can explain the use of derivatives in a more pedestrian manner. Thanks!

      * Beard's first book, in which he points out that the office of the justice of the peace was originally a creation of the Crown, traces the struggle of the office to establish its independence. ""It was the King's Peace that after many ages swallowed up every other 'peace,' and it is as a phase of the prolonged struggle for mastery between the principle of centralized administration and the principle of local independence that we must view the evolution of the office of Justice of the Peace. This is well brought out by Dr. Beard, and he is especially clear in tracing the long series of tentative steps and experiments that led up to the final establishment of the office by the statute of 1360."" Book Description

The power of big business in the Third Reich economy remains one of the most important issues of that disastrous era. Drawing on prodigious research in German corporate and government archives, Peter Hayes argues that the IG Farben chemicals combine, Nazi Germany's largest corporation, proved unable to influence national policy outside the firm's sphere of expertise. Indeed, the most infamous aspects of Nazi policy occurred despite IG Farben's advocacy of alternative courses of action. Nonetheless, Farben grew rich under the Nazi regime and was directly involved in some of its greatest crimes. This edition has a new preface that incorporates new developments and research in the field.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2003-01-10

The words of Peter Hayes contributed a new spin on the industrial contributions to the Germanic society. Corporations and volkism were thoroughly investigated. He offers new information on an old, but undying topic. It was awesome!

        1 out of 5 stars Hardly inconsequential.......2002-07-17

Dr. Hayes maintains that the directors of Farben were inconsequential to the Nazi plan of extermination--even though the company maintained an extensive operation of murderous slave labor at Auschwitz, and otherwise colluded with the Hitler regime. Since it has been made clear that the post-war Farben financially sponsored Hayes' research, I cannot see how this book and its conclusions can be taken seriously. I think the sponsorship seeps into the fabirc of the book itself. The conclusion about Farben directors which Hayes offers, referred to above, is just one example of this book's lack of credibility. Independent research would demand that any investigation of Farben's history be conducted free from financial contributions by the company itself. Hayes' book--and its slant--should be read with that in mind.

        1 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2002-05-11

I expected more and was disappointed. Hayes could have made a real contribution by better documenting the crimes of corporate collusion. Hence, I'll stick with Crime and Punishment of IG Farben, which this book can't hold a candle to.

1 out of 5 stars Shameful Volume by Peter Hayes.......2002-05-07

I first heard about this book from a friend whose opinion of this volume was not good. After reading it carefully, I must concur. I seems shameful that Peter Hayes should go out of his way to reinvent Farben directors and managers as just a pack of decent men caught up in the Nazi whirlwind while trying to help their company survive. Hayes' many conclusions are not supported by the documentation. Hayes should be ashamed of himself for authoring this book. I suggest right thinking people will agree.

5 out of 5 stars Important and Ignored.......2002-04-02

Rarely examined and more rarely understood is how respective business leaders became effective accomplices in the Nazi regime. Peter Hayes' book, Industry and Ideology, provides a cogent explanation based on both extensive citations to research and on reasoned analysis and common sense. It should be required reading not only in University history departments, but also in business schools.

        Book Description

The Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is well known to biologists and home aquarium enthusiasts alike. Scientists have studied guppies for most of the twentieth century. Some of the most intensive recent research has been conducted by behavioral ecologists, who have found that the guppy mating system makes guppies especially useful in the study of sexual selection and mate choice. By observing guppy behavior in aquaria, researchers hope to obtain new insights into how selection operates in natural populations. Here Anne Houde summarizes and synthesizes the scientific work done to date, relates the empirical findings on guppies to current themes in sexual selection theory, and suggests new directions for future research.

This book describes the sexual behavior of guppies and examines how mate choice by females leads to the evolution of the conspicuous colors and the courtship displays for which guppies are widely recognized. The author shows that female guppies prefer males with bright color patterns, especially those with orange spots, and that the mating preferences of females lead to sexual selection on both color patterns and courtship displays of males. Houde's work addresses a number of areas that are of interest in sexual selection, including the remarkable degree of plasticity and evolutionary lability of sexual behavior in guppies, geographic variation in mating preferences, possible mechanisms for the evolution of female mating preferences, and the role of sexual selection in speciation. In conclusion, the author explores the implications of her findings for behavioral ecologists who study sexual selection in other species.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars So much more than guppies.......2001-04-03

Anne Houde's book is not only about sex and mate choice in guppies, but is a profound review of the state of knowledge in sexual selection and mate choice evolution in the late 1990's. Her chapters on models of mate choice evolution in particular are among the clearest and most even handed treatments of a rather complex and difficult field. This book will be of immense value to anyone interested in the evolution and ecology of sexual reproduction and mate choice. It is of extra value to "guppyologists" because of the way Houde reviews all of the techniques used in different labs, and for the fantastic "to do" list of future research questions that she offers.

5 out of 5 stars My Doctor Wrote a Book!.......2001-11-12

I must say I was excited when I read in our local paper that Dr. Eppolito had written a book. The patients he describes all have a story - some with happy endings, some sad. It describes the problems that a rural country doctor faces each day. I didn't realize how many different roles the Dr. plays - physician, psychologist, and counselor. Dr. Eppolito is dedicated to his patients and the community he serves. My family has always admired him for that. To read Dr. Eppolito's book, you will see how much respect he has for his patients. To him, these people that have worked hard all their lives and are faced with a variety of ills are the heroes. A must read!!!

I read about this book in our local paper. It was written by an area doctor and had medical drama. It sounded like a good combination. I have to know, did anyone proofread this book? If this were my published work, I'd be totally embarassed. Typos, goofed up sentences, and words abound. Hey, I'm not an English teacher, but this book drove me nuts with all the mistakes, and that was during the first few chapters! I give it 1 star for good stories. If you like medical stories, you might like this title. If you teach English, it might give you an aneurysm!

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2001-05-31

This book tells you what happens in a small town, like Cato. Cato is described as a small country town with lots of farms. Dr.Eppolito expriences farm accidents, new friendships and a chance to live in the country. I loved the book because of the way he described all his interesting patients. I would buy this book if you live in a small rural town. You will have many laughs from this book.

          Book Description

On May 9, 1990, a bottle of Jack Daniels, a ring with letter, a Purple Heart and Bronze Star, a baseball, a photo album, an ace of spades, and a pie were some of the objects left at the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial. For Kristin Hass, this eclectic sampling represents an attempt by ordinary Americans to come to terms with a multitude of unnamed losses as well as to take part in the ongoing debate of how this war should be remembered. Hass explores the restless memory of the Vietnam War and an American public still grappling with its commemoration. In doing so it considers the ways Americans have struggled to renegotiate the meanings of national identity, patriotism, community, and the place of the soldier, in the aftermath of a war that ruptured the ways in which all of these things have been traditionally defined. Hass contextualizes her study of this phenomenon within the history of American funerary traditions (in particular non-Anglo traditions in which material offerings are common), the history of war memorials, and the changing symbolic meaning of war. Her evocative analysis of the site itself illustrates and enriches her larger theses regarding the creation of public memory and the problem of remembering war and the resulting causalities--in this case not only 58,000 soldiers, but also conceptions of masculinity, patriotism, and working-class pride and idealism.

1 out of 5 stars Carried to the Wall, by Kristin Ann Hass.......2004-01-11

This book is tripe. I was forced to read it for a college class, and am disappointed by the lack of substance in the book. While it claims to be about tributes to fallen soldiers in Vietnam, it spends a substantial portion of the time discussing battle monuments of the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, along with an extended discussion of the dedication of the Gettysburg battlegrounds. It looks too far into many of the objects left, such as the bike tube and nursing pads. Frankly, I'm ashamed to be associated with the same instution as this woman. Don't read it if you don't have to.

4 out of 5 stars very emotional, could use some deeper probing.......1999-11-25

i read this book for a class i was taking in college. some of the lists and letters haas reproduced made me cry...most books that people read in college don't make people cry. haas' main (and one of her only) shortcomings was her apple pie, americana approach to what people left. many latino-americans and african-americans fought in vietnam and the material and social analysis is, at times, very white bread. very good overall. moving and interesting.

          Book Description

This book presents a concise account of the lives and times of some of the more significant occupants of the Egyptian throne, from the unification of the country around 3000 BC down to the extinction of native rule just under three millennia later. Some, such as Tuthmosis III, had a major impact on their time, and were remembered by their own people until the very civilization collapsed. Others, such as Tutankhamun, were soon forgotten by the Egyptians themselves, only to burst into popular culture thousands of years after their deaths, as a result of the labors of modern archeologists. Still more remain unknown outside the small circle of professional archeologists, but led lives that call out for wider dissemination. This book sets out to provide a mix of all three categories, in an attempt to present a balanced view of Egyptian kings and their range of achievements.

                    Book Description

Sparsely settled mountain areas of the world, such as Colorado's Front Range, give an impression of wild, untouched, and unchanging nature. Yet in many cases mountain rivers that appear to be pristine natural systems actually have been impaired as a result of human activities. In this timely and accessible book, Ellen Wohl documents two hundred years of land-use patterns on the Front Range and their wide-ranging effects on river ecosystems.

If we hope to manage river resources effectively and preserve functioning river ecosystems, the author warns, we must recognize how beaver trapping, placer mining, timber harvesting, flow regulation, road and railroad construction, recreation, cattle grazing, and other human activities have impaired rivers—and continue to do so. The rivers of the Colorado Front Range are representative of mountain rivers throughout the world: land-use patterns affecting their form and function are little-recognized or - understood. This book fills an important gap with a clear and comprehensive explanation of how rivers are changed by human activity and includes a generous selection of striking historical and contemporary photographs, maps, and diagrams.

Ellen's book gives a historical perspective on the forces that have shaped the rivers of Colorado's front range. I grew up on the Colorado's front-range and would never have suspected the extent of change that these rivers have undergone. She covers the period from the Beaver Men to the present. During a recent fishing vacation back to the area I was able to stand where some of the photos were taken, read the descriptions, and envision the changes for myself. Hopefully, concerned citizens and their elected officials will take her advice throughout the book seriously and protect these valuable resources for the future!
