Great Overview of Stars + Brief Biology.......2006-05-09

"The Exploding Suns" covers much history of human's study of the sky and much about stars and life in a surprisingly interesting manner. Descriptions are given about observations throughout history, especially of supernovas (which are what the text comes back to again and again -- hence the second portion of the title).

The question that seems to be the main motivation for this book is, how do we explain our present situation? However, that question is too broad, so Asimov answers many smaller questions to build the big picture. Where did all the elements come from? How did they form? How did life arise? How did life develop? (The last two are not explained as thoroughly as the first two.) These are just some of the questions that motivates the reader throughout the book.

Asimov leads the reader through many different types of stars and explains, quite clearly, how a star goes nova or supernova. Of course, if you are looking for the mathematics behind all of this science, this is not the text! Near the end of the text, Asimov also describes some basic biology and gives a "quick" explanation of how life has evolved. Regardless, it is great if you are just interested in the topic, which was my situation. Also, no prior background is assumed; this text is self-contained. Overall, I found the text lively and engaging, something that is not a given with this subject matter. 5 well earned stars.

"Updated Edition" (What's new?)
From what I could gather from my updated edition, the "only" update is an added chapter. This new chapter, written by Dr. William A. Gutsch Jr., is worth reading since it contains new developments through recently observed supernovas and describes some modifications to our theories of Type I supernovas (as described in earlier chapters of the book). This isn't saying the earlier chapters are worthless; they explain a lot and this background is needed to understand the recent observations. From my understanding, the modifications to the theory really are modifications to fit the new observations and not an entirely reworked theory, so reading Asimov's text will not be a waste of time (it is not outdated -- new discoveries build on it).

Complex Clues.......2003-12-30

As you follow Basil Coventry, an "information gatherer" in Elizabethan England, there will be numerous chuckles, several guffaws,and even a belly laugh or two. Basil is more interested in finding the next potable and, somtiimes, not so potable alcoholic drink than he is in gathering information. Basil, stumbles, fumbles, and bungles his way, and you are treated to Ferguson's descriptions in simile and metaphor form. Basil dreams of better things for himself but, just when he thinks he has reached his goal, he drops himself back into his old ways and the chance is lost. This is not always an easy read. The archaic words require the use of "complex clues " and , perhaps, a dictionary but it is fun and well worth the read.

Graff connects military affairs with political and social developments to show how China's history was shaped by war. An indispensable reference, unless you can read Chinese.......2002-12-13

This is, for now, the best survey of Chinese military history during the long fragmentation of 300-589, a formative period that saw the introduction of the stirrup, heavy cavalry and siege warfare techniques that later served the Tang army so well. It provides a clear and readable account of the many wars in this period, and indeed is often forced to devote more space to narrative than analysis because of the general readership's lack of familiarity with the subject matter.

David Graff is perhaps the only academic currently specialising in medieval Chinese military history, and his impressive and very helpful bibliography demonstrates the level of research that has gone into the book. Still, the format of a single book can scarcely contain the fruits of that research. The issue of whether the pivotal Battle of the Fei River was a mere myth, first suggested by Michael Rogers and largely ignored since then by experts in both China and the West, at least gets a mention but not the discussion it deserves. Similarly, the evolution of tactics and weapons in response to horse archery and armoured cavalry is briefly described, but not really placed in the context of the key battles narrated elsewhere. Where he does excel is in considering the different problems of logistics facing the cavalry-based North and the riverine South in the chapter "North versus South". In addition, the Introduction's overview of past historiography and scholarship (or rather the lack of it) in Chinese military history is sufficient to make this book a worthwhile read for readers who, like myself, always wondered why the field was so disgracefully neglected.

Graff does make some errors in transliteration, mostly in the tedious process of converting earlier English-language sources from the Wade-Giles system to Hanyu Pinyin. His maps are also too sketchy and few to help the reader much - those fluent in Chinese are encouraged to read Bo Yang's translation of the "Zizhi Tongjian" into modern Chinese (published in Taiwan) for the best available battle maps for this period. Nonetheless, David Graff must be credited for writing a long-needed introduction to early Chinese warfare for Western military enthusiasts. Anyone looking for richer historical detail would proabably have to learn Chinese and read the excellent series by Bo Yang.

excellent concise book on Jewish history for those who love maps.......2007-04-15

I loved this book. The maps on every page sum up a huge amount of information and let me see the big picture of Jewish history. I consulted the medieval sections many times while researching my historical novels, Rashi's Daughters, Book 1: Joheved and Rashi's Daughters, Book II: Miriam.

WASTE OF MONEY.......2007-05-06

This book and the other one (on metamorphic rocks from the Geological Society of London) are worthless pieces of garbage. All pictures are poor quality black and white and on some pages the words are so close to the center of the book they are hard to read. What a waste of money. When they first arrived I thought I had been scammed. I thought someone went to the local copy store, copied these books and then sold me the low quality copy. Information in the book is ok but seems obvious. These books are not field identification guides. They only tell you how to describe a rock and dont help identify anything. They just tell you how the British would rewrite your notes. I am a geologist and have no use for these books and will never trust anything from the Geological society of London again. I mean low quality black and white pictures in a geology book? How the hell is that gonna help?? WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!!

overpriced.......2007-01-05

This book does have some wonderful information but it is a combination of elementary geology and advanced petrology. It is more a discussion on the formation of igneous rocks not an actual description. It is way overpriced! A great disappointment.
