3 out of 5 stars Good reference book but too vague for me.......2001-08-30

First of all let me say that I am in the securities business and I only bought this book because it was a required text in a class I was taking. I have some fundamental differences of opinion with the offer on some of the advice she offers. Mainly I disagree with the chapter on life insurance and stocks. The author endorses purchasing stocks and for the average investor mutual funds provide the added diversification that most people need, especially in this market with some stocks down 80% from their highs last year. She also says you should only buy annual renewable term insurance and only buy term it if you need insurance for less than 10 years and THEN buy convertible term. Why would you want to convert to cash value insurance? You buy 20-25yr level term and invest the difference if you don't smoke and are reasonably healthy you can get three times the coverage with level term for less peer month. Then you can invest the difference and be self insured by retirement. Now maybe she sells this stuff, I don't know.
I also think that it gives you a lot of information but due to the format it can't give you any sort of in depth information.

I do have to applaud the calender in the front of the book though. It is a good tool to help you keep your financial house in order.

5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive, easy-to-use book of its kind.......2000-01-27

Since becoming an investment professional in 1988, I've been purchasing this book regularly for my library since it caught my eye in the early 90's. Dunnan employs a simple, easy-to-read style in compiling an investment sourcebook that serves simultaneously as a "how-to" manual and a reference guide, without implying that the reader is some kind of dummy.

Each of the 36 chapters contains easy to understand, practical information interspersed with helpful hints and cautionary asides (denoted by a checked box and a little cannonball bomb, respectively) that add a clever dimension to the financial discourse. What impresses me most about this book is that Dunnan has no bias (unlike other noteworthy publications) when it comes to the topic of investment advice and fees. She provides encouragement and insight as to how to get the most out of your own efforts, if you feel comfortable on your own, or out of your investment professional, if you don't. Topics range from beginning to complex investment vehicles, choosing financial professionals, financing major purchases, on-line investing, and considerations related to insurance and retirement. There's even a chapter on the tax status of your investments, arranged alphabetically by subject. All throughout, there are numerous listings of alternative information sources (e.g., organizations and publications) to bolster your education. In the back of the book you'll find a decent glossary (conspicuously absent in other books) of Wall Street jargon. Unless your goal is to day-trade, this book is for everyone who has a question involving the world of money and investments.

      Book Description

Considering the paradigm of modernity's three key concepts --law, power, and science--Santos argues for extensive epistemological shifts in the field of critical social thought. He traces the historical process by which both modern science and modern law lost the balance between social regulation and social emancipation inscribed originally in the paradigm of modernity. Pleading for a new dialogic rhetoric and moving back and forth between solid empirical work and highly innovative and far reaching theorizing, he deals with diverse topics.

3 out of 5 stars Good but some more careful editing could have saved headache.......2003-03-20

Well organized, from-the-basics primer BUT I just gave myself a big headache trying to work through an apparent absurdity in the planetary motion chapter (night 10) only to find that the p47 comment that "all the superior planets' synodic periods [save Mars] are somewhere between 11 months and one year" is plain wrong - in fact the appendix shows this, the sentence should have read "between 12 and 13 months". It's difficult enough trying to conceptualize this without this kind of basic editorial slip-up. Hope there aren't too many more howlers.

      4 out of 5 stars Good start.......2000-10-28

Clearly written, but definitely for complete beginners. At times oversimplified, but a good starting point. The "forty nights" can really be accomplished much, much faster.

5 out of 5 stars Cosmic Orientation Guide.......2000-06-30

This is an excellent resource for the beginner. A series of 40 exercises designed for the observational astronomer... night-by-night (thus knowing the sky in 40 nights.) Mr. Schaaf expalins the moon's phases towards the beginning of the book with an excellent explanation of the Earth's movements in relation to the sun and the moon's orbit around earth. He tells you exactly what to look for and, more importantly, why you want to look for certain features/objects (the lesssons build upon one another.)

It's important to point out that you don't need a telescope to complete the lessons, but I still would recommend using one... it will enhance your experience and appreciation.

5 out of 5 stars Great general information book.......2000-01-05

This is an excellent "primer" book for beginning astronomers, or anyone interested in the night sky. It begins with very general concepts and builds on them each succesive night. Even if you have no knowledge of astronomy, after completing this book, you'll be able to understand the motions of the planets and stars. As well as where to locate fabulous sights to see when outdoors any night.

5 out of 5 stars A great beginner's book to the night sky.......1999-03-17

I've always been interested in the night sky, and after reading a number of magazine articles, I thought it was time to learn more about the stars and galaxies above.

"40 Nights to Knowing the Sky" will help any adult learn more about the night sky and how to prepare for that first look through a telescope.

Each chapter is well written and easy to understand. The book has a lot of reference material, including pictures and drawings, to use well into the next century.

If you're beginning a hobby in amateur astronomy, this book will be a great addition to your library.

        Book Description

The role that friction and contact play in the processes of wear and planarization on material surfaces is central to the understanding of Chemical-Mechanical planarization (CMP) technology, particularly when applied to nanosurfaces. Tribology in Chemical-Mechanical Planarization presents a detailed account of the CMP process in a language that is suitable for tribology professionals as well as chemists, materials scientists, physicists, and other applied scientists and engineers in fields of semiconductors and microelectronics. The first half of the book is devoted to CMP, while the other focuses on the fundamentals of tribology. As the first source to integrate CMP and tribology, the book illustrates the important role that these fields play in manufacturing and technological development. It follows with an examination of tribological principles and their applications in CMP, including integrated circuits, basic concepts in surfaces of contacts, and common defects. Other topics covered in depth include basics of friction, flash temperature, lubrication fundamentals, basics of wear, polishing particles, and pad wear. The book concludes its focus with CMP practices, discussing mechanical aspects, pad materials, elastic modulus, and cell buckling. Expanding upon the science and technology of tribology to improve the reliability, maintenance, and wear of technical equipment and other material applications, Tribology in Chemical-Mechanical Planarization provides scientists and engineers with clear foresight to the future of this technology.

        Book Description

Abusing Science is a manual for intellectual self-defense, the most complete available for presenting the case against Creationist pseudo-science. It is also a lucid exposition of the nature and methods of genuine science. The book begins with a concise introduction to evolutionary theory for non-scientists and closes with a rebuttal of the charge that this theory undermines religious and moral values. It will astonish many readers that this case must still be made in the 1980s, but since it must, Philip Kitcher makes it irresistibly and forcefully.

Not long ago, a federal court struck down an Arkansas law requiring that "scientific" Creationism be taught in high school science classes. Contemporary Creationists may have lost one legal battle, but their cause continues to thrive. Their efforts are directed not only at state legislatures but at local school boards and textbook publishers. As Kitcher argues in this rigorous but highly readable book, the integrity of science is under attack. The methods of inquiry used in evolutionary biology are those which are used throughout the sciences. Moreover, modern biology is intertwined with other fields of science--physics, chemistry, astronomy, and geology. Creationists hope to persuade the public that education in science should be torn apart to make room for a literal reading of Genesis.

Abusing Science refutes the popular complaint that the scientific establishment is dogmatic and intolerant, denying "academic freedom" to the unorthodox. It examines Creationist claims seriously and systematically, one by one, showing clearly just why they are at best misguided, at worst ludicrous.

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars see Kitcher's new book.......2007-08-27

A recent review by Claudio d'Amato correctly points out that Abusing Science is somewhat obsolescent - it was indeed written 25 years ago so 3 stars is plenty. It should be noted however that Kitcher has since revisted the topic in a completely new book which touches on most of the new ideas and controversies that have arisen since 1982 ( and there are many!). The new book is Living with Darwin, Oxford University Press, 2007. Its a very good read. George

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Refutation of Classic Creationism.......2007-05-31

"Abusing Science" is a simple, straightforward, and yet deep and lucid work. Kitcher is a philosopher of science, and philosophers have the unfortunate tradition of being bad writers--not Kitcher. The book flows beautifully, is very well organized, and exhausts the topics it purports to tackle. The refutation of classic creationist arguments (Henry Morris, the Institute for Creation Research, the Moral Majority, etc.) is without mercy, and yet Kitcher never falls in the trap of claiming the moral or otherwise absolute superiority of science. His goal is merely to show that whatever it is, creationism is not science; it may have its own merits (not discussed herein), but it has none as a scientific discipline.

Chapter 1 provides a solid, basic background in genetics and evolutionary biology for the layman. Without these basic concepts and terminology, the rest of the book would not be as readable. Chapter 2 explains simply and lucidly what science is and what the evolutionary theory is all about. It is the most informative, key chapter of the book. Chapters 3 and 4 debunk creationists' critiques and faulty assumptions about evolutionary theory in good detail, showing how flawed their reasoning is. Chapter 5 expounds the various types of creationism extant and their (indeed very limited) propositive claims. Chapters 6 and 7, finally, argue against "equal time" for creationism and evolutionary theory in high school science classes, and why evolution is not synonymous of atheism and immorality. The final chapter is written in cooperation with Kantian scholar Patricia Kitcher.

The reader needs to keep one key fact in mind: this book was written and published in 1982. So there are several things it does NOT include.

*** Intelligent design. There is no reference to ID whatsoever. This was before Johnson, Behe, Dembski, and others. Needless to say, ID is merely creationism in another dress, so most of Kitcher's objections will (retrospectively) apply to ID as well.
*** Dawkins' contributions to evolutionary biology. "The Selfish Gene" had already been written, but Kitcher does not discuss gene selection vs. organism selection, nor of sexual selection.
*** Gould's contributions. Punctuated equilibrium was already there, too, but Kitcher does not discuss it at length, probably because creationists did not take much issue with it before the late 80s.
*** The Human Genome Project. It had not even started back then.
*** Evolutionary psychology. Kitcher does hint at it in the final chapter, but this was a budding field then, and his assumptions about morality could be revised in the light of it (although they're still generally on target).

Finally, my only issue with this book is the treatment of theological issues in the last chapter. Kitcher argues in favor of a reconciliation of science and religion, that is, that a Darwinian can be a Christian--just not a fundamentalist, literal-reading-of-the-Bible one. However, there are many more issues that make evolutionary theory incompatible with even mainstream and watered-down Christianity, primarily the fact that religion would have to revert to sterile deism if it were to survive at all. Kitcher does not focus on these issues, but after all, it was never the scope of his book to do so. For more complete discussions of that issues, there are other texts (Haught, Miller, etc.)

Overall, "Abusing Science" is an excellent refutation of classic, old-school creationism and a GREAT starting point for research in the modern evolution-ID debate.

5 out of 5 stars A stellar piece of work!.......2004-04-04

This book is an absolute must have for the science teacher. The creationists rely on the open mind of most teachers to obfuscate and confuse with half-truths and outright deception. This book examines the creationist's claims one-by-one and exposes the falsities in each of their arguments. Kitcher's work should be required reading in all teacher-training programs as it explains clearly and succinctly what science is and how it works to help us understand the world around us. Lastly, this is the kind of book that you will want to read several times just because it is so darned good! Another good book in this vain is Carl Sagan's "The Demon-Haunted World" ISBN 039453512X

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Info on Creationist Irrationality.......2002-11-16

This book does exactly what it sets out to do: further reveal creationism as myth. It is not the job of science to make facts intertwine with scripture, facts will stand on their own whether you like them or not. Religion and science can co-exist but they must occupy their own domains.
Read this book if you would like additional insight into creationist shortcomings in the scientific realm.

        1 out of 5 stars Doesn't cut the mustard.......2002-08-16

Strong on research and defense of previously-established evolutionary theories, but fails to prove that life evolved out of still matter.

This book succesfully explains how organisms are malleable and evolve according to environmental demands. However, it fails to convincingly prove or even attempt to describe how life started and expanded into the plethora of plants and animals that now inhabit Earth. By what natural process did chemicals combine to form even a single living cell? This is not convincingly explained in this book.

While this book's details and technical information are quite hefty, there are innumerable questions concerning our origins that are left untouched. For example, what about anomolous creatures with features that cannot have been developed by a competition for limited resources, like the spider and her web, or the electric eel? How did an unconcious accident produce the first photoreceptor?

Until these questions are convincingly answered - especially the question of what kicked life off in the first place, the idea that the universe and life within it is the creative product of an unimaginable force or god makes more sense than the theory that it was all random.

Waiting for Ariana is a campy comedy about friendship, family, and the drawbacks of being lovesick. Our narrator is Johnny Fratelli - a young plumber obsessed with his sister's "unavailable" best friend, Ariana. After first meeting her when he was a young teenager, Johnny brings us to his early twenties, when he decides to act on his affections. As we follow Johnny on his quest for love, we encounter several amusing circumstances and eccentric characters. If you enjoy fun comedies filled with "toilet humor" and the hilarity of sexual mishaps, you are sure to enjoy this!

The plot is terrific, Mike Polizzi really has a knack for writing about stuff. This particular story is set on one of the moons in Jupiter, in the city of New Acapulco. He meets a girl named Lauren, I mean Ariana and they fall in love and make out on the beach. Later, they go to prom together which his hilarious because his pants kept falling down and she is taller than he is. Polizzi, or Polizz, as his friends call him will embark on another big adventure next summer, to Europe, hopefully we can make fun of him even more next year. Overall, this is the stuff legends are made of.

                    Book Description

Tamerlane or Timur-i-Lenk ('Timur the Lame') is one of the most extraordinary conquerors in history. In the late 14th century his armies seized huge territories from the borders of Mongolia to Palestine and Anatolia. His passage was marked by massacres that outdid even those of the Mongols for sheer savagery. Timur's career was unequalled since Alexander the Great in terms of constant battlefield success. Only in his youth, while recovering his family estates south of Samarqand, did he face occasional defeat. This title tells the remarkable story of Timur and details the organisation, tactics, arms and armour of his all-conquering army.

This book does a fine job of recreating the organization and equipment of some of the last of the mounted archers to attack the Western world, and thus reveals a unique link between the Orient and Europe and the world of Islam.

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating and long overdue work.......2005-07-20

An excellent overview of the arms, armour, tactics, organization and leaders from a period of history throughly ignored in the west. Our lack of knoweldge here is probably due two reasons. First, Tamerlane barely touched the Christian west, prefering instead to pick on the asian and middle eastern Muslim peoples, therefore having little effect on the modern west directly. Second, Tamerlane was a comqueror, not an empire builder. He simply annhilated his foes and left. His destruction of the Ottomans meant little as he allowed them to regroup and later regain their power.

David Nicolle's books often seem to focus heavily on archaeological evidence. In this case it is probably a neccesity. There is much focus on surviving examples helmets, armour and weapons. My knowledge of the eastern types of armour was strengthened from reading this book.

One fact that struck me after taking in the whole of Timur's campaigns is how ridiculous it sounds for critics to blame Christianity and Europe, usually the Crusades, for the sad state of the Muslim world. Take a look at the destruction Timur brought the Muslim lands. Major cities and cultural centers were sacked repeatedly. Untold numbers were slaughtered. This is most likely what set Islam back. Comparing the crusades to Tamerlane' conquests is like comparing a flea bite to nuke.

I am not Angus McBrides biggest fan, but I enjoyed his work here. The plates of Timur in his early years as well as the cover plate are outstanding. Wargamers and miniature painters will love this book.

Some great illustrations with a so so text about one of the real Monsters of History. Tamerlane was not a man you wanted lurking around in your area of operations if you could help it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best information you can get.......2005-06-23

This is the best source of information I would recommend to anybody without spending alot of money. While I did and do have the Cambridge titles as well as orginial Turkish and Perisan manuscripts, this is one source I can give to read to the western population without going into too much detail. The Pictures as good and the history is true. A 5/5 for this One.

4 out of 5 stars another worthwhile Osprey title.......2002-08-09

I've been reading reviews of Osprey titles and nodding my head in agreement. Basically, Osprey's readers want the quality of a 30 dollar title in a twelve dollar title. I think the answer may be found in the larger trade paperbacks Osprey is now printing. That being said, there is still good introductory information in the Men-at-Arms series. Off my soapbox now...This volume deals with the Timurid state that thrived and wilted in Aisa from the late 14th to late 15th centuries. Basically a combination of Mongol cavalry and Turkic infantry, Chinese siege techniques and...medieval War elephants! with good discipline and a penchant for plunder. They faced Byzantines, Mamluks, Ottoman Turks, Armenians, Georgians, Mongols, etc. Dr. Nicolle once again tackles an obscure subject, relying on archeological and textual support for his theses. As he admits in this book and others, there's still a lot open to interpretation. He even questions some of Angus McBride's illustrations. Osprey titles are a good starting point to do deeper research. My nitpicking: photos are often too small to see what Dr. Nicolle is trying to demonstrate, and the time period covered is great ( less so in this title than in others ).The reader is referred to the title dealing with the Ottoman empire from 1300 to 1774 for information on the Timurids' main enemy. Highpoints: Angus McBride's paintings, the illustration of Turco-Mongol bows and their usage. Too bad there is no war elephant plate...

                      Book Description

When the Allies decided to try German war criminals at the end of World War II they were attempting not only to punish the guilty but also to create a record of what had happened in Europe. This ground-breaking new study shows how Britain and the United States went about inscribing the history of Nazi Germany and the effect their trial and occupation policies had on both long and short term 'memory' in Germany and Britain. Donald Bloxham here examines the actions and trials of German soldiers and policemen, the use of legal evidence, the refractory functions of the courtroom, and Allied political and cultural preconceptions of both 'Germanism' and of German criminality. His evidence shows conclusively that the trials were a failure: the greatest of all 'crimes against humanity' - the 'final solution of the Jewish question' - was largely written out of history in the post-war era and the trials failed to transmit the breadth of German criminality. Finally, with reference to the historiography of the Holocaust, Genocide on Trial illuminates the function of the trials in perpetuating misleading generalizations about the course of the Holocaust and the nature of Nazism.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Authoritative.......2002-09-16

Donald Bloxham's Genocide on Trial is among the most comprehensive and authoritative studies of post World War II war crimes trials ever written. Unlike most books on the subject, Bloxham does not limit his study to Nuremberg's International Military Tribunal. He reviews the vast majority of Allied war crimes trials and also the premature releases of convicted war criminals during the 1950s. Using new archival sources, Bloxham documents the British government's premature releases of prominent war criminals (like Kesselring and von Manstein) during the Cold War. The author convincingly proves his contention "that war crimes trials did little to clarify conceptualizations of Nazi criminality in the public sphere anywhere." Genocide on Trial should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in the history of war crimes trials.

                        Book Description

The Organic Chemistry of Drug Synthesis, Volume 6 covers the literature on the synthesis of medicinal agents from 1994 to 1998. This well-received series meets the needs of practitioners in the field who seek a quick overview of the synthetic routes that have been used to access specific classes of therapeutic agents.

While most books on medicinal chemistry are organized on the basis of therapeutic or biochemical classes, materials in this series are arranged and discussed in terms of chemical structure. Thus, the preparation and detailed organic chemistry of the classes are presented in a unified way. Only drugs that have been granted a U.S. Adopted Name are included in this series.

Synthetic organic, pharmaceutical, medicinal, and heterocyclic chemists will find this series an invaluable resource for their research in the synthetic chemistry of drug development.
