Amazon.com has far better books.......1999-08-25

Having already done extensive reading on charismatic leadership and the unique role of language in this ambiguous process, I was disappointed with this particular endeavor. It was too basic and shallow to be of any practical guidance. Certainly effective leadership depends on much more than the creative use of metaphor, analogy, and the like. I strongly suggest other books that take the idea of language and leadership much farther than this work, and with a much more academic, thorough and compelling approach, including Jay Conger's work on charismatic leadership (The Charismatic Leader: Behind the Mystique of Exceptional Leadership, Jay A. Conger, Jossey-Bass Publishers, 1989)

Jean-Jacques Burlamaqui (1694-1748) was a Swiss jurist. His chief works are Principes du droit naturel (Principles of Natural Law) (1747) and Principes du droit politique (Principles of Political Law) (1751), being a sequel to the Principles of Natural Law.

According to natural law ethical theory, the moral standards that govern human behavior are, in some sense, objectively derived from the nature of human beings.

The year 1694 saw the death of Samuel Pufendorf, who, with Hugo Grotius, was the foremost representative of the modern tradition of natural law theory, and the birth of Jean-Jacques Burlamaqui, who helped transform the tradition and convey it to new generations.

As professor of natural law in Geneva, Burlamaqui used Pufendorf's works on natural law but taught and wrote on the subject in the vernacular, not in the traditional university Latin. By making natural jurisprudence more accessible, Burlamaqui helped make it part of civic education.
Burlamaqui formulated the principles of popular sovereignty, of delegated power, of a constitution as a fundamental law, of a personal and functional separation of powers into three independent departments and finally, he provided for an institutional guardian of the fundamental law.

This is an essential read for anyone who wants a deeper understand the theory of natural law.

Great basic astronomy textbook, for beginners only.......1999-11-28

I took beginning astronomy at college, and this was my book. The 1999 edition. It came with 2 CD-ROMS which are very interesting and helpful. The book goes step-by-step in laying down the history and foundations of astronomy, and takes you all the way through a chapter on life on other planets. In between, it's easy to follow and stops to explain certain terms and well-accepted ideas among modern astronomers. Great book for beginners, intermediate and expert look elsewhere.

An Astronomy book not to be missed.......2001-12-31

With currently 2-3 dozen astronomy books on my bookshelf I recently found this book without actually looking for it. Impressed by the extraordingly well structured contents table I felt this urge to purchase it and I was even more impressed after starting to read.
The author is gifted at explaining complicated issues in a way that most beginners will understand without difficulty and more advanced backyard astronomers won't get bored (I started dealing with astronomy on a regular basis in 1992, my first books being T.Dickinson's "Nightwatch" and the "Audubon Field Guide to the Night Sky" by Mark R. Chartrand, both books still among my favorites).
So if you need a comprehensive astronomy reference this is the book to buy.

If this is the Demystified series, I'll buy more.......2006-02-17

This was my first venture into the Demystified series, and it was just what I was looking for. I'm not a genetics engineer, if I was, I probably wouldn't have bought the book. But since I was looking for a great introduction into how genetics work, this book more than fit the bill.

It was tough to put down. The author did a great job presenting the material in an ordered and easy to understand fashion. I did find a couple of minor typo's, but the material and presentation more than made up for it. At first I thought the quizzes at the end of each chapter were a little hokey, but they really do help to reinforce what you have learned. Overall, a top notch book that does what it sets out to do - help you learn about genetics (and bacteria, and viruses, and cloning...)

Great Introduction.......2006-06-19

The author provides a descripton of the life of Vauban and introduces the reader to the fortifications he was involved with in France. His three systems are described and the author explains that Vauban did not actually divide his own work into these "systems" since that was a term applied by others later. This small work is packed with a large amount of information on Vauban and his works. The only problem is some illustrations which are a bit confusing since they have been mislabelled or poorly represent a Vauban fortification. In one case the artist marked an orlon incorrectly. Otherwise the book makes a nice introduction and basic reference.

The origins of the modern science of engineering can be traced to France's Royal Corps of Engineering in the eighteenth century. In Conserving the Enlightenment, Janis Langins gives us a history of this prototypical technical bureaucracy, using as his point of entry a pivotal dispute on the respective merits of two methods of engineering military fortifications. The story he tells of the tribulations of military engineers at the end of the Old Regime sheds light not only on the evolution of modern engineering but also on the difficulty of innovation in a technical bureaucracy.

From the days of Louis XIV and his great military engineer Vauban, engineers in France had a reputation for competence and intellectual superiority. (This respect for engineers survived the Revolution; two engineers sat on the new Republic's ruling Committee of Public Safety with Robespierre.) Langins argues that French engineers saw themselves as men of the Enlightenment, with a steadfast faith in science and its positive effects on society; they believed that their profession could improve and civilize even warfare. When Marc-Rene, marquis de Montalembert, a cavalry officer and an amateur engineer, challenged the prevailing wisdom with a new method of fortification, the subsequent factional struggle became a crucible of self-definition for the profession. In the end, Langins shows, Vauban's science won out over Montalembert's inspiration, reinforcing and predicting the essentially conservative nature of French engineering.
