The book is your source to a plethora of additional problems. Yet don't expect the exam problems to be similar to those you find in this Schaum series. You might find some of these problems extra strenuous or over-simplified. For all the major functional groups, the book does provide lots of practice problems in reaction products, reactivity, and stereochemistry. You might need to cover up the solutions which immediately follow the questions. Students should foucs on soloving the mechanism-type of problems from textbooks before looking at this book. Check this out from your library!

A mean-spirited book.......2007-01-16
Margulis is a world class researcher and a scientist who has changed the way we think. However as a summary of her life's work this book makes her seem petty and small. She is dismissive and patronising when she discusses work tha disagrees with her own and often seems to be damning with faint praise. A perfect example is her dismissal of Woess's division of Archaea from Eubacteria. She belittles his division because to her it obscures the importance of the division between eu and pro karyotes (it certainly didn't to me) even though she grudgingly says that it's better than the plant animal dichotomy. Woess's classification is far more reflective of reality than Margulis's, and shows how even for eukaryotes we overestimate the importance of multicellularity as it divides the protozoa which just form one finger in Margulis's classification. There are much better books about symbiosis several of them written by Margulis.

In Lynn Margulis' Symbiotic Planet (A New Look at Evolution), the reader is presented with the author's ideas and theories on evolution in a style that entwines an autobiographical basis into her piece of work as well.
The use of first person throughout the novel personalizes the conversation that the book presents to the reader. Margulis, although only presenting a theory is very unsure and unconfident with her own opinions. She seems to be uncomfortable with presenting her thoughts straight out, and barely attempts to persuade the reader to believe in her theories. When she presents her theories with a very minute attempt to persuade her audience, the book and her ideas become nearly pointless, and bland - for the lack of evidence used to back up the thoughts of the reader.
The book switches back and forth between informational and autobiographical. In the beginning of the book, the small stories the Margulis includes on her history and self-experiences intrigue the reader by adding the attraction that accompanies a story. Yet Margulis takes the story parts of her book too far, and soon her autobiographical accounts become outdated, losing all former interest. Margulis gets caught up in her own life, rather than her theories on life. The stories of the courses she took in college qualify her ability in the subject matter, yet they do nothing to further the purpose and goal of the book. This book comes across as being a book that was written by an author more interested in herself than her theories she was presenting. Only halfway through the book is any relevant information exposed, and even as the reader reaches this point, it quickly rotates back to an autobiographical account on Lynn Margulis.
Margulis presents her readers with fascinating topics that she is well qualified to discuss and propose theories on, yet she fails to effectively present the information. This book would only be of interest to avid fans of Lynn Margulis who wish to learn more on her background, and who thoroughly appreciate her style of writing. Otherwise, Lynn Margulis' Symbiotic Planet (A New Look at Evolution) is not the book for you.
World much smaller than ours, yet vital.......2004-01-06
Let's hear it for the bugs-not your creepy-crawlies, but bacteria, the be-all (and possible end-all) of life on Earth, according to Margulis. Here she describes the once radical theory that cells have incorporated bacteria to mutual advantage and uses that as a springboard to summarize a still more radical theory of how species evolve. She calls it serial endosymbiosis theory (SET). It is now conventional wisdom that the energy-producing mitochondria in animal cells were once free-living bacteria. Indeed, they have their own genes-different from nuclear DNA. Margulis provides many examples of fruitful symbioses, including sexual union itself as the merger of sperm and egg cells. According to SET, there are successive steps or mergers that led to multicellular life forms: In steps one and two the oldest bacterial forms-the non-oxygen breathing 'archaebacteria' found in deep ocean vents-merged with swimming bacteria two billion years ago to form the nuclear heart of animal, plant, and fungal cells and provide the cilia for swimming. Later steps introduced a third partner able to breathe oxygen and added the ability to engulf and digest food (phagocytosis). The last step involved engulfing yet another bacterium-but one these various new forms of life could not digest: bright green photosynthetic bacteria. The bone of contention here is the origin of ciliated cells-critical to evolution for their vital role as sperm tails, among other things. Margulis has a theory about their origin, but as they say, more research is needed. Margulis' theory also dictates a change in taxonomy to five kingdoms: bacteria at the base, then 'protoctists' (algae, slimemolds, ciliates) next, and then animals, plants, and fungi. Finally, she defends Lovelock's Gaia theory, which she interprets to mean that enormous interacting ecosystems on Earth achieve homeostasis rather than that the planet is in the hands of some benign Mother Earth. This is vintage Margulis-personal, autobiographical, passionate, argumentative, at times over the top, but full of ideas-at least some of which, in the past, have proved to be right.
A cogent--if combative--case for a new evolutionary paradigm.......2003-11-10
If one decides to peruse popular biology books long enough, one quickly becomes conscious of a "theological" nature of the major disputes in evolutionary biology. Darwin is the Bible from which all draw their extensions, and his basic authority is unquestioned; however, there is a good amount of intradisciplinary backbiting and heated discussion over how his legacy should be interpreted. On one hand you have Dawkins and Dennett proclaiming with near-Christian fervor that selection explains everything (even how selection explains the superiority of selectionist as scientists, of course), whereas Behe is busy bursting the bubble of Darwinism to the tune of irreducible complexity, with overt hints that Irreducible Complexity Necessarily Points In The Direction Of A Creator.
In between you have the wonderfully refreshing prose of Lynn Margulis, who thinks both neo-Darwinists and creationists are out to lunch and that they're both missing something important: symbiosis. Whoever said living things couldn't cooperate in addition to competition? Whoever said that individual, smaller organisms couldn't eventually join together to produce a larger, more complex organism that functioned as more than the sum of its parts? Margulis makes a compelling case for both points, interspersed with some personal asides about her own development as a biologist. She is quite refreshing in that she has little use for single-minded reductionism, but at the same time she pointedly refuses to make a case for some addled concept of scientific creationism. Where the former's scope is too narrow, she insists the latter's scope is too broad. Her remarks on the larger implications of symbiosis and Gaia theory make clear that she is not attempting to introduce a teleology or a "God" into the world she is describing; if anything she regards such attempts as misguided anthropocentrism that increasingly has little place the more we learn about our interconnectedness with the rest of the biosphere. Symbiosis theory is a message of hope, but also a blow to the ego of the human species--there is indeed a constructive, integrating factor at work in evolution, but it's not conscious design, and it certainly didn't intend us as the pinnacle of life. The hopeful-yet-unsettling message of Margulis' book is that life constructively gave rise to us in ever-larger forms of integration and symbiosis, but also that life will outlast us if we insist upon destroying ourselves. Bacteria can do it all over again if they need to! Life can adapt to a post-human world; the question remains as to whether or not humans can reverse current trends leading to a post-human world.

"Symbiotic Planet" may sound to the average reader like just another attempt to "classify" life on our little Earth. This would be an error. This book, as is typical of Dr. Margulis' writing is precise, complete, and allows the reader to easily follow along this amazing journey through time and life itself. I have read, as well as reviewed a number of Dr. Margulis' books through the years, and stand in awe at how she can "break down" what to myself seems an incredibly complicated idea, into plain common examples. Her writing captivates the mind of the reader, to the point that it seems impossible to put down. I am a very slow reader-yet I finished the book (the first time) in a single day. One cannot stop reading it is just that fascinating! There is little I can say that would be nearly adequate to properly describe this book. The reader will decide for themselves that is really is a great read and a great book to keep as reference. It really is as simple as that.

Sometimes one can read on for pages and pages without ever raising an eyebrow or being forced to smile. I was forced to close the book on several occasions for fear of ruining the pages with the effluent of laughter-induced tears! I then attempted to regain my composure quickly so that I could keep on reading! MANY of my friends will be receiving copies, as I believe there is not a better qift than making someone smile and laugh! This book is histerical!

Recovering in my own bed from recent surgery, I thought it would take more than a tall tale to make me laugh let alone smile, but VAMPIRE BLOOD BANK accomplished this with sweeping success. Combining a fun-loving fascination of vampires with the humoristic approach of hemophilia and other hominine struggles, this is one of the most entertaining spins on anthropomorphism I've read. An entertaining, fast read for anyone who enjoys humor, vampires, New York, and not least, the comedic climb and triumph of the misfit.

This book makes me wonder why I don't read more often -- or less! (I'm not sure which.) At any rate, I just couldn't put it down...and this was before I even had a chance to pick it up! Harry has really done wonders for those of us who love a blood-curdling tome.

The title is misleading.......2007-07-05
There are some nice observations, personal observations that perhaps just make the book worth reading (at the price of $7).
But there is little about the Sherman and why it was a death trap other than it had thinner armor and initially an under-powered gun. I was hoping for more insight into how the Sherman was used and perhaps what the soldiers did to overcome the tanks disadvantages.
As others have said there is a lot of repetition, I think he repeats that the Germans fired on a tank until it burnt and therefore could not be recovered. This is mentioned twice on one page in one place and he seems to be annoyed at the Germans for stopping him being able to repair the tank!! How inconsiderate of them.
Then there are pages about troop movements and battle formations, nothing really to do with the tank and covered more accurately elsewhere.
After you have read the better books in this category, you might get this to complete your collection, but really there are much better books available.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the true story of the Sherman in WWII, written by someone who was actually there. This book and writer is endorsed by Stephen Ambrose.
Could Be Better.......2007-02-27
The title will get your attention but all the numbers will run together after awhile.It does have it's merits as the author details his life in the maintenance divison.The awful job of cleaning out a tank with the blood/tissue from battlefield casualties,a smell that never leaves that particular vehicle.And over & over to the point the story just repeats itself.I really had to struggle to finish this book.

I agree that the best understanding of history comes from primary source documenation where the source has first-hand knowledge of the facts. This is exactly why moments of the book are quite insightful and moving. For example, the scene where Cooper shares a fox hole in combat for the first time after receiving heavy fire. Listening to a soldier tell of crying himself to sleep while reciting the 23rd Psalm and taking comfort from Paul's words in Phillipians is touching and honest. Moments like this are what make this book worthwhile.
I will not comment on historical inacuracies concerning the US tanks v. the German tanks as it appears the foregoing commentators know a lot more than me. I would encourage readers to recall, however, who this writer is and what his job was during the war. Cooper raced across enemy lines in the cover of darkness regularly to report to his commanders who and what was recently destroyed. He then made every effort to get fresh supplies back to the front lines. In doing so, part of his daily routine was witnessing his peers wash the blood and guts out of semi-destroyed tanks - the blood and guts of their friends - so that young, often inexperienced soldiers, could take their place.
I suspect witnessing this bloodshed day in and day out for about two years would cause any person to long for tanks with more protection and more offensive power.
This aspect of the book needs not be forgotten. Sure, it could have done without the editorialism concerning events Cooper was not present for, but perhaps those digressions come from the unique suffering Cooper experienced during the War.

Same story my father told.......2006-07-03
My father landed on Omaha Beach with the 745th Tank Battalion. He survived to live a good life and raise a family. The few times he talked about WWII his stories mirrored Cooper's. I thought Dad's claim's about being shot out of 13 (THIRTEEN) Sherman tanks were just "war stories" when I was younger, even with his Purple Heart and Bronze Star as evidence. He was suspicious about politicians and military leaders the rest of his life. Perhaps the negative reviews are written by people who want to rewrite history. From what I heard from my father, Cooper is dead on accurate. I loved the book.

As Apsley Cherry-Garrard states in his introduction to the harrowing story of the Scott expedition to the South Pole, "Polar Exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised." Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World is a gripping account of an expedition gone disastrously wrong. Young Aspley Cherry-Garrard was rich enough to buy himself a space on Robert Scott's journey to the Antarctic in 1910. The trip ended badly for Scott, as everyone knows, but it was also a deeply life-altering experience for survivors of the expedition. Returning to England many were loudly criticised for not pressing on in their search for Scott, who as it turned out, died of hunger and cold not so far from where the rescue party turned back. Cherry-Garrard took the criticism very much to heart. Deeply sensitive, he wondered if he could have done more. Years later he wrote his recollections of the expedition in prose so strong and lyrical, yet so measured and insightful, that it illuminates the pages. The "worst journey" of the title is a metaphor for the entire expedition, which ended so badly, and also a literal description of a quixotic side trip that Garrard and some companions took in the middle of a bitterly cold Antarctic winter to retrieve an egg of the Emperor penguin. Mistakenly, as it turned out, one of the scientists on the trip felt that the penguin embryo held some crucial clues to evolutionary history. The little band on that dreadful journey returned to base camp, but after they had been through the most extraordinary privations. Yet though it all, says Garrard, they never forgot their pleases and thank yous. Gentlemen they were, and so they remained even at the point of death.
The expedition was composed of such men and Garrard was certainly among the bravest and best. And how he could write! He put his soul into this book, which has been described (by a well-known travel author) as the best travel book ever written, and perhaps one of the best books ever written. It really is enough to make one proud to be human. And yet the book is not the least self-serving - Garrard was too honest for that. His portrait of Scott, a man dogged more by bad luck than bad management, is required reading for anyone interested in that amazing polar expedition.
Though the book ends with Garrard's return to England, the remainder of his life was rather sad. Plagued with depression, afflicted with ulcerative colitis, he never quite forgave himself for not being able to pull off the miracle needed to save Scott and his companions. Though he was a only a junior member of the expedition - in the end crucial decisions were made by others - that seemed not to have comforted him much. And unfortuately he has not been well served by the biography "Cherry" by Caroline Alexander - she seems basically out-of-sympathy with her subject. In the end Cherry-Garrard's book stands as his legacy, and what a legacy it is.
Can you review a book that you did not entirely read?.......2007-04-21
I read about 50 pages and had to quit. Time was, I would never do that. I'm older now, and if the writing is way too verbose and stuck in irrelevant details that do not lend anything to the story, I quit. I really like adventure books and was surprised that this one wouldn't grab me. I don't think it is the story (from other reviews, the story is a good one); seems that the author and I just don't mix.
Maybe I will pick it up again at some time and give it another shot. Looking at the size of this book, it is unlikely. If I do, I will give it a fair review.
To put this review in context, I happened to have LOVED the story of Endurance by Alfred Lansing. Go figure.

This is an inspiring, suspenseful story full of rich detail about what life on The Ice was like for these brave men who spent almost 3 years there in the early years of this century, when sails were still used on ships. The beauty, richly described by Cherry; the torturous conditions at times, how they kept busy and sane during the long long dark winter....I was completely enthralled even though I knew at least the rough outlines of the story before I began. I highly recommend it.

Many years ago, I took the trail to the top of Mt. Whitney. Leaving my older, less confident companions behind in the predawn hours at Whitney Portal, I moved quickly up the trail. By mid-morning I was cooling my heels at Trail Camp, a campground of sorts, in a barren glacial basin at 12,000 feet. With another 2500 feet of climbing ahead of me, the trail lead off into a steep jumble of cobbles and boulders. I could see a notch in the ridge above, where the trail was likely headed, but it was not at all obvious how it got there.
I had no guide, but from training as a scout, I knew how to evaluate subtle trail sign, and before long, I was nearing the top of the ridge. From there, the final leg to the top of the mountain was much easier to follow.
A surprise lay below me. Looking back down the slope that I had just climbed so tediously, the trail was laid out like a map. I could see every switchback and turn. Invisible from below, but completely obvious from above.
Human life is more than mirrored in mythology. Each individual's adventure has a potential of mythic intensity and proportion. Our personal experiences are greater and more mysterious than we can often bear, without overlaying those experiences on the framework of mythology. But by properly framing our life's journey, paths once invisible become remarkably clear.
Foster has chosen the cycle of the seasons, and the wealth of mythos surrounding this cycle, as a model for the human life experience. And he uses his model to assist others in making difficult but necessary life transitions. His model, much more so than how he uses it, is the basis for this book.
Looking back, it's as obvious as the back of your hand - or my trail up the mountain - the truth of this model. Yet modern, mechanistic humanity cannot easily envision this model, because so few of us have actually made the transitions. We as a society, with all our complex tinkertoys and petty battles, are a world of children. We have forgotten how to grow up. Those of us that do, have largely done so by ourselves unaided. But for most of us, our core personalities cannot mature in a world that offers us nothing but a cacophony of media mainlining and pseudo-cultural posturing. There's not much chance of escaping this chaotic nightmare.
The vision of the "Four Shields" offers some hope amidst all of this. In truth, this is more than just a book describing a philosophy. It is a way of life - Foster and Little have been living it for decades now - which finally has found its way to paper. Conceivably it could be a blueprint for expanded consciousness. It is highly likely that this book was written with no thought of financial recompense. It was written personally for you - and everyone. For now the only thing I can say is: this book must be purchased, read, and if at all possible, understood. It may not change the path you are on, but it will make that path much clearer.
