50 Creative Training Openers and Energizers
Bob Pike , and Lynn Solem Manufacturer: Pfeiffer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0787953032 |
Book Description
Open your next training session with a BANG!One of the hardest tasks you'll face as a trainer is pulling participants' thoughts away their daily duties long enough to engage them in your training. According to training master Bob Pike, two of the most important learning concepts are "primacy" and "recency." People don't remember middles; they remember beginnings ("primacy") and ends ("recency"). That's why, if you want your training to be a success, you have to gain their attention as soon as they walk in the door.
Following up on the success of 50 Creative Training Closers, the most trusted and recognized names in training bring you 50 Creative Training Openers and Energizers. These lively, interactive session openers, ice breakers, and attention grabbers are what you need to inspire continued application, learning, and skill development. And you don't have to be a professional trainer to use this collection--business presenters and educators of all kinds can immediately incorporate these creative designs into their work.

Meeting and Training Openers and Warm-Ups that Work!.......2003-01-25
Pike and Solem write clear, concise directions for each opener or energizer. With very little effort, each can be adapted to different needs by changing questions. (Instead of asking "What is your favourite hobby," for example, you can ask "What skill do you most use on the job?") In the opening pages, they provide a matrix so you can identify at a glance whether an activity is most useful as an Icebreaker, Networker, Team Builder, Task Tension Reducer, Relationship Tension Reducer, Personal Tension Reducer, or Focussing Activity. Better yet, each of the 61 activities falls into a minimum of three of these categories--accomplishing multiple goals for me in my meetings and trainings. The nine-page introduction offers hints and tips from Pike & Solems' years of experience. The combination of the matrix and the introduction are incredible added value.
I have been consistently pleased with the results I get from these activities. The four-quadrant name-tent, dreams and nightmares, group milling, and uniqueness and commonalities are consistently useful for me. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to trainers and meeting facilitators.

Symbiotic Planet : A New Look at Evolution (Science Masters Series)
Lynn Margulis Manufacturer: Basic Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0465072720 |
Book Description
Named "best biology book of the year" by Library Journal, Symbiotic Planet describes how symbiosis is the key to understanding the origins of cells, the evolution of sex, the emergence of life on land, and even the physiology of our planet."Autobiographical, passionate, argumentative." -Kirkus Reviews
In Symbiotic Planet Lynn Margulis shows that symbiosis, which simply means members of different species living in physical contact with one another, is crucial to the origins of evolutionary novelty. Ranging from bacteria to the living Earth itself, Margulis explains the symbiotic origins of many of evolution's most important innovations.
Along the way, Margulis describes her initiation into the world of science and the early steps in the present revolution in evolutionary biology and the importance of species classification for how we think about the living world. Written with enthusiasm and authority, this is a book that could change the way you view our living Earth.

A cogent--if combative--case for a new evolutionary paradigm.......2003-11-10
In between you have the wonderfully refreshing prose of Lynn Margulis, who thinks both neo-Darwinists and creationists are out to lunch and that they're both missing something important: symbiosis. Whoever said living things couldn't cooperate in addition to competition? Whoever said that individual, smaller organisms couldn't eventually join together to produce a larger, more complex organism that functioned as more than the sum of its parts? Margulis makes a compelling case for both points, interspersed with some personal asides about her own development as a biologist. She is quite refreshing in that she has little use for single-minded reductionism, but at the same time she pointedly refuses to make a case for some addled concept of scientific creationism. Where the former's scope is too narrow, she insists the latter's scope is too broad. Her remarks on the larger implications of symbiosis and Gaia theory make clear that she is not attempting to introduce a teleology or a "God" into the world she is describing; if anything she regards such attempts as misguided anthropocentrism that increasingly has little place the more we learn about our interconnectedness with the rest of the biosphere. Symbiosis theory is a message of hope, but also a blow to the ego of the human species--there is indeed a constructive, integrating factor at work in evolution, but it's not conscious design, and it certainly didn't intend us as the pinnacle of life. The hopeful-yet-unsettling message of Margulis' book is that life constructively gave rise to us in ever-larger forms of integration and symbiosis, but also that life will outlast us if we insist upon destroying ourselves. Bacteria can do it all over again if they need to! Life can adapt to a post-human world; the question remains as to whether or not humans can reverse current trends leading to a post-human world.
It fits---it is as simple as that........2003-03-28

The Worst Journey in the World: Library Edition

As Apsley Cherry-Garrard states in his introduction to the harrowing story of the Scott expedition to the South Pole, "Polar Exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised." Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World is a gripping account of an expedition gone disastrously wrong. The youngest member of Scott's team, the author was later part of the rescue party that eventually found the frozen bodies of Scott and three men who had accompanied Scott on the final push to the Pole. These deaths would haunt Cherry-Garrard for the rest of his life as he questioned the decisions he had made and the actions he had taken in the days leading up to the Polar Party's demise.Prior to this sad denouement, Cherry-Garrard's account is filled with details of scientific discovery and anecdotes of human resilience in a harsh environment. Each participant in the Scott expedition is brought fully to life. Cherry-Garrard's recollections are supported by diary excerpts and accounts from other teammates. Despite the sad fate of Scott, the reader will grudgingly agree with the closing words of The Worst Journey in the World: "Exploration is the physical expression of the Intellectual Passion. And I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore.... If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penguin's egg."
Book Description
Selected by Adventure magazine as the number one adventure book of all time, The Worst Journey in the World is Apsley Cherry-Garrard's dramatic, moving, and exceptionally human account of his survival as the youngest member of Robert Falcon Scott's 1911 expedition to the South Pole.
The scion of English landed gentry, Cherry-Garrard was chosen from more than 8,000 volunteers to join the Scott expedition at the height of the craze for polar exploration. When they arrived in Antarctica, Cherry, as he was known, was not assigned to the team that would attain the pole, but instead, with two other members, to collect the eggs of the Emperor penguin. Cherry and his cohorts struggled in near total darkness across more than one hundred miles of ice in temperatures as low as 70 degrees below zero, slept in bags heavy with their own frozen sweat, dragged a 700-pound sled over whipping ice that felt like sand against their faces, and wore clothes that were literally frozen stiff. All things considered, his title seems almost charitable.
In spite of the sheer suffering and loss, and despite the guilty feelings that he could have done more to save Scott and his crewmembersa guilt that haunted him until his deathCherry-Garrard managed to write an account of the ill-fated journey that is infused with his own sweetness and humility. Sometimes funny, often sad, and thoroughly detailed, The Worst Journey in the World is a triumph of adventure storytelling rightly deserving of its place at the top of the genre.

Rites of Passage.......2000-10-17
I had no guide, but from training as a scout, I knew how to evaluate subtle trail sign, and before long, I was nearing the top of the ridge. From there, the final leg to the top of the mountain was much easier to follow.
A surprise lay below me. Looking back down the slope that I had just climbed so tediously, the trail was laid out like a map. I could see every switchback and turn. Invisible from below, but completely obvious from above.
Human life is more than mirrored in mythology. Each individual's adventure has a potential of mythic intensity and proportion. Our personal experiences are greater and more mysterious than we can often bear, without overlaying those experiences on the framework of mythology. But by properly framing our life's journey, paths once invisible become remarkably clear.
Foster has chosen the cycle of the seasons, and the wealth of mythos surrounding this cycle, as a model for the human life experience. And he uses his model to assist others in making difficult but necessary life transitions. His model, much more so than how he uses it, is the basis for this book.
Looking back, it's as obvious as the back of your hand - or my trail up the mountain - the truth of this model. Yet modern, mechanistic humanity cannot easily envision this model, because so few of us have actually made the transitions. We as a society, with all our complex tinkertoys and petty battles, are a world of children. We have forgotten how to grow up. Those of us that do, have largely done so by ourselves unaided. But for most of us, our core personalities cannot mature in a world that offers us nothing but a cacophony of media mainlining and pseudo-cultural posturing. There's not much chance of escaping this chaotic nightmare.
The vision of the "Four Shields" offers some hope amidst all of this. In truth, this is more than just a book describing a philosophy. It is a way of life - Foster and Little have been living it for decades now - which finally has found its way to paper. Conceivably it could be a blueprint for expanded consciousness. It is highly likely that this book was written with no thought of financial recompense. It was written personally for you - and everyone. For now the only thing I can say is: this book must be purchased, read, and if at all possible, understood. It may not change the path you are on, but it will make that path much clearer.
A both poetical and scientific approach of human change.......1999-11-18
Their image of the 4 seasons of nature is a metaphor for the seasons of human growth. Rites of passage are more important than focusing on the seasons themselves.
A helpful paradigm for healing and growth.
