    Book Description

Thoroughly researched and clearly written, Standing at the Crossroads speaks to the whole professional woman and her organization, providing a framework for guiding a woman's growth and development as a high- achieving leader. The authors debunk the common myth that women must give up life's other roles to be successful professionally, and offer research conducted by the Center for Creative Leadership in conjunction with participants in The Women's Leadership Program to show that multiple roles in fact benefit and enhance women's managerial performance. The book provides individuals and their organizations with invaluable advice they can use to support women's development as managers and leaders.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated gem of a book!.......2002-10-09

I picked up this book casually on my way into a bookstore... to add to those which I would peruse on my cross-country flight. I quickly found myself thoroughly engrossed in the stories of 61 women managers and executives who seemingly "had it all." I found myself thinking through episodes in my own life and identifying with the choices, tradeoffs, and dilemmas of several different women. It gave me some new appreciation of and insights into how successful women grapple with the issue of integrating their personal and professional lives in order to live life to the fullest, whatever their own personal definition of that might be. I used some of the strategies suggested in one chapter to help me think through a career problem I'm currently grappling with. This book was an easy and insightful read; it turned out to be the ONLY book I read during my flight! I would encourage all women, not just managers, to read this book; it addresses concerns that almost all of us have. For that matter, even though the research is based on women, I know from personal experiece that many men are grappling with similar issues, and they would probably find the book helpful as well. Even if not interested for themselves, it would help them better understand their wives, daughters, and female coworkers.

    5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!.......2002-08-22

Although this book is written with women managers in mind, the issues and themes it discusses will resonate with every woman who has ever juggled a number of different roles in her life - and probably with many men as well! The authors discuss five key developmental themes in women's lives -- the need to act authentically, make connections, control one's destiny, achieve wholeness, and gain self-clarity -- and show how these themes combine to create a whole that is dynamic and unique to every woman. In addition, the book is filled with practical tips and helpful exercises to help the reader who wants to develop in these areas. One thing that makes this book stand out from many other popular business books is that it is based on an extremely solid piece of research. The authors interviewed more than sixty women, followed them over time, and collected other information about them. Yet, although it is based on an academic study, the book is an easy read - very enjoyable. Almost every woman should be able to find herself somewhere in this book. I highly recommend it!

Source Book in Mathematics I found this book a useful history book ( I didn't know Bessel was an astronomer).
I think the beginning where Hubble is quoted about his way of looking at
science is almost as important to me as the rest of the book.
In the present period with progress in both telescopes on the ground and in space,
we may not realize how recent ignorance was and the work
responsible for reaching our present knowledge.
With Hawking predicting an end to science in the 1980's,
we find in the early 2000's that we have found a new level of ignorance.
I appreciate that others gave their lifetimes to
advancing science and thinking new thoughts about
      the shape of the universe.

3 out of 5 stars better as supplement to other readings.......2006-12-13

This was my textbook for an upper level college invasive species class. Although this book referenced some great case studies, while providing overall generalizations on invasive species, I don't think it was the most effective tool as a study aid. If you want to read about studies on invasive species, it is much more effective to read the studies themselves, and if you are just interested in reading about invasive species for fun, this book is too technical. If you really want to learn about invasive species, I would not trust this book to stand alone.

5 out of 5 stars A Coordinated Series of Articles.......2005-08-11

Species Invasion has been around about as long as have species. Before mankind entered the scene with ships and aircraft birds and streams carried seeds to new locations. Of late with the advent of air transport we live in a time when there is virtually an explosion of invading species.

This book is a series of articles broken into three major parts providing an insight into Ecology, Evolution, or Biogeography. The articles are written my masters of their respective field and together they bring modern thinking on every aspect of such invasions into view.

Early in the project it was suggested to bring the contributors together for a workshop. This was done in March of 2004 at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis. This provided for much synthesis as these presentations and discussions enabled the author to present their findings and to use questions from other authors to refine their findings.

For many, the CIA conjures up a shadowy world of spies, international intrigue, and secret corridors of power. While this image may be partially accurate, the primary function of the agency is less romantic: the collection and analysis of information. To this end, the CIA's Directorate of Science and Technology is indispensable. As the group responsible for creating the tools that allow the spymasters to do their jobs, the DS&T has been "a key element in the history of both the CIA and the entire intelligence community," writes Jeffrey Richelson, a specialist on American intelligence operations. In The Wizards of Langley, he traces the directorate from its inception in 1947 to the present, analyzing each aspect of its activities and responsibilities in exhaustive detail, along with the infighting and political wrangling that have accompanied its growth.

As Richelson points out, there were some missteps, such as administering LSD to scientists without their knowledge (one committed suicide as a result), employing cats as bugging devices, and the use of psychics, but overall the DS&T has made "an enormous contribution to U.S. intelligence capabilities and national security." Notably, the directorate has developed the U-2 spy plane and some of the U.S.'s most important surveillance satellites, and has been a pioneer in photointerpretation, the collection of signals intelligence, and foreign missile and space programs analysis. Some innovations have even had significant effects beyond the intelligence community, such as lithium batteries for pacemakers and methods for the detection of breast cancer. The book also offers a wealth of anecdotes, giving readers a rare look at top-secret operations and spy games of the cold war. Though the sheer amount of detail sometimes bogs down the narrative, this is a gold mine for those interested in the largely unsung heroes who have enabled the CIA to work so effectively. --Shawn Carkonen

          Book Description

A uniquely detailed and engrossing look at the individuals, scientific innovation, and bureaucratic warfare behind the scenes at the CIA's Directorate of Science and Technology.

In this, the first full-length study of the Directorate of Science and Technology, Jeffrey T. Richelson walks us down the corridors of CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, and through the four decades of science, scientists, and managers that produced the CIA we have today. He tells a story of amazing technological innovation in service of intelligence gathering, of bitter bureaucratic infighting, and sometimes, as in the case of its mind-control adventure, of stunning moral failure. Based on original interviews and extensive archival research, The Wizards of Langley turns a piercing lamp on many of the agency's activities, many never before made public.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Needs more wizardry.......2006-07-28

If you go into reading this book with the idea that you are going to be learning about amazing gadgets and strange experiments you might finish the book disappointed. If you go into reading this book hoping to learn about the bureaucracy of the CIA than you'll probably leave satisfied. While Richelson does spend a portion of the book talking about technical wizardry such as spy satellites, spy planes, and other James Bond fare, much of the book is spent talking about directorate organization and hierarchy, and the political infighting that comes along with it.

This wouldn't be a problem if the book were billed as such. However, the book's back cover and description lead you to believe otherwise. The crazy directorate experiments using hallucinogens and telepathy are mentioned in the description but they take up less than a chapter in the book.

The book is incredibly well researched and can at times be an enjoyable read. However, a disproportionate amount of book space is taken up talking about organizational structure and agency politics. Two subjects that I find little interest in. If this book had stressed wizardry over policy it would be a five star selection, as the technical talk is incredibly interesting, well done and enlightening. However, this book focuses is on bureaucracy and suffers because of it.

3 out of 5 stars Dry text with a few gems of info.......2006-06-01

Richelson has written a very complete, documented, book on the Directorate of Science and Technology. However, unless you are looking for how government organizations function, or don't function, there isn't much new information on the technological accomplisments of the CIA that hasn't been written about elsewhere. I found the detailed reporting on who hated who, and how the defense department fought with the CIA for control of programs only slightly interesting. The technological achievements of the CIA were really interesting but sometimes amounted to a half page of good stuff, then back to the petty infighting within the government. I don't recommend this book unless you are doing a research paper.

3 out of 5 stars The "Bureaucrats" of Langley.......2005-03-11

If I had read Andrew S. Rogers's review of this book (see below), "The Wizards of Langley" would have moved to the back of the queue of unread volumes on my bookself. While Richelson does an excellent job researching and documenting the organizational history of the CIA's Directorate of Science & Technology (DST), he drags the reader through a morass of details regarding the bureaucratic battles among various organizations within the U.S. Intelligence Community.

When Richelson manages to take a break from the tedium of bureaucratic infighting, he spends most of his time describing the development of reconnaissance aircraft (such as the U-2) and various signals intelligence (SIGINT) activities, with a focus on satellite programs. For a much more captivating history of SIGINT programs, I (like Rogers) would recommend James Bamford's "Body of Secrets".

One of the more interesting anecdotes in "Wizards" occurs toward the end of Chapter 7, where Richelson describes how Antonio Mendez orchestrated the escape of six American diplomats out of Iran after the fall of the Shah. Although Richelson only devotes three pages to this story, he succeeded in piquing my interest enough to purchase Mendez's own book, "Master of Disguise".

If it wasn't for Richelson's excellence as a journalist and historian, I would have given this book a lower rating. If you are writing a research paper on the history of the DST, look no further. However, if you seek enthralling tales of technological wizardry or derring-do, you would be better served elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Interpretation at its best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-02-02

Dr. Richelson, who is a senior fellow at the National Security Archives, gives a highly recommendable interpretation of the Directorate of Science and Technology, at the CIA. His book is based mostly on declassified documents, making its stories highly believable and interesting.

2 out of 5 stars Well Researched but Poorly Written.......2002-12-29

I must agree with previous reviewer comments. This book attempts to describe the Directorate of Science and Technology, yet it focuses on the bureaucracy of upper management and has little discussion regarding the programs and technologies created by the DS&T. This organization has played a cricial role in shaping modern history, yet the book is dull and uninteresting to read.

This study of the CIA's Directorate of S&T introduces us to key personalities who helped share the directorate: Edwin Land of Polaroid, Albert Wheelon, Carl Duckett, & others who operated secretly within the directorate such as Antonion Mendez, whose "technical service" skills helped 6 Americans escape Iran after the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in 1979. Presents intriguing details -- many never before published -- of the directorate's programs & activities. Book Description

The Cactus Primer presents the amateur cactophile with an excellent introduction to cactus biology and provides the informed reader with an invaluable summary of the last forty years' research. This book goes far beyond books that instruct readers in the propagation, growth, and care of these plants; addressing matters of more scientific interest, it takes an integrated approach to the presentation of the form, physiology, evolution, and ecology of cacti. The book is unique in that it combines the descriptive morphology and physiology documented in the scientific literature with more general observations found in popular publications on cacti. It provides a new generic classification of the cacti and contains much new information, including data on photosynthesis, heat and cold tolerance, computer modeling of ribs, and the effects of spines.

Enhanced by over 400 illustrations and supplemented with an extensive glossary, this book will appeal to cactus enthusiasts interested in the classification and growth of cacti, as well as to plant biologists who use cacti to illustrate desert adaptation and convergent evolution. Written in accessible style, The Cactus Primer is bound to serve a dual function as both an instructive tool and a reference work in cactus biology for years to come.
