Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Exciting and Scary.......2002-10-09

This book scared the hell out of me. Inside is a web of politics, technology and science (fiction?) of an intricate nature. Futurenet explores the past, drawing links to the present and possibly the future through her meetings with the fathers of the internet and many more great minds. Together, they give us a glimpse of possible futures enlightened by technology or endangered by legistration. Sally Richards weaves all this wonderful material into a fascinating story that will leave you with much thought to process.

        Book Description

The aim of this book is to explore what it means to live a life under the law. Does a life of law preclude love and does a life of love preclude law? Part of the theme of the book is that social questions also raise individual moral and ethical questions; that to live lawfully implies both a question of how I should live in my relations with my fellows and how society should be organised. These questions must be looked at together. The book explores these questions and in looking at the articulation of law and love touches upon debates in personal morality, aesthetics, epistemology, social and political organisation, institutional design and the form and substance of law. It raises questions that are of interest to students and those working in law, theology, and social and political theory.

5 out of 5 stars I had no problems reading this book........2007-07-26

This textbook was required for 2 of my Aeronautical Science courses in my pursuit for my Masters and I was more than happy to read it again. There is so much useful information in this text.

The author reveals the intricacies of the space environment as well as the hazards of going into space with great depth. If you are required to purchase this book; it's a keeper for reference purposes as well.

        Happy reading.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent focus from basic to advanced Astronautics.......2007-05-10

For the course I'm taking, this text is an excellent resource.

4 out of 5 stars Relating Space for the Masses!!.......2006-03-26

Mr. Jerry Jon Seller's book, "Understanding Space" is an amazing textbook about the technical aspects of space. The text is well written, the diagrams are easily understood, and the "tech-factor" for space geeks is acceptably high. It is no wonder that the United States Air Force has recommended "Understanding Space" as its baseline text concerning Technical aspects of space flight.

For those afraid of "rocket-science" level math, the book is written at a very easy level, using algebra, trigonometry, and bits of calculus covered with a whole BUNCH of physics. It is an excellent text for technical classes, and also easily readable for non-technical space classes. I've personally referenced this book in *EVERY* space-related class I've taken (4 undergrad and a *whole* bunch of graduate classes) - if you buy it, you will use it, I guarantee.

The only downside to this text lies in the fault of its users, not the author or publisher. This book was written to be the introduction to the Space Technology Library, a list covering more advanced topics in space. That said, the text is written at a high-school/undergraduate level for math and physics; yet the USAF has committed its "Certified Space Professionals" to using the text at their advanced level "Space 200" course. If you're taking (or teaching) space-related classes, understand the level of information you're needing - there *are* other space technical books (some by the same publisher) that will cover these topics in more depth (i.e. harder math and physics).

        5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Undergrad Aerospace Students.......2006-03-25

The Air Force Academy has hit a grand slam with this book, and Embry-Riddle was wise to include it in its curriculum. This book is the equivalent of my coursework in 3rd Class Physics at West Point, but it has a decidedly aerospace slant to it that makes it an important piece for any person with a need to understand space. The illustrations are of superb quality and add to the learning experience of more visual learners unlike the Introduction to Astrodynamics book done by the Air Force Academy years earlier.

              Book Description

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a procedure for separating components from a mixture of chemical substances; a combination of separation, identification, and quantitative measurements. Solvent selection is perhaps the most commonly overlooked parameter in HPLC. Even the most experienced analytical chemist tends to select one of three familiar solvents. The HPLC Solvent Guide provides detailed coverage of all commonly used HPLC solvents used in a wide range of separations.

HPLC is a mature but substantial market, and one that Wiley reaches successfully and well. The HPLC list is established, and this second edition of a successful title will build upon the success of the first. This is a revised and expanded edition in a field that is still growing into areas of analysis and methods.

                        Book Description

A zany comedy about God, sex and guilt, as seen through the eyes of our antihero Dr. Gunder Shocker, alias Gunder Oedipus von Schockenkraenken, a dysfunctional psychotic, first generation German-American and his struggle with: bad genes; a need to get even; the not so benign game of golf; the power of his scalpel; and the scars of a traumatic childhood, tenfold more calamitous than Dorothy's encounters on her yellow brick road to Oz. Our antihero - a captive of the genes of his late father, Herr Baron Wilhelm Mueller von Schockenkraenken, a career Nazi colonel and doctor rumored to be one of, if not, the Belsen Butchers, whose hanging fate his son now sees as his own inescapable destiny - as said, our antihero, Dr. Gunder Shocker, is a man struggling with his German heritage and first-generation-American-itis - belonging and yet not belonging - insecure in the American way, clinging to the ways of the old country, but yet, like most American doctors, intensely caught up in the pastime of golf, which he treats more like war than sport. The doctor's one true relationship in which he is secure is with his deformed and mentally disabled bastardized Cousin Egore Schlepstein, the deformity a product of a very stressful pregnancy, the stress brought upon his mother by the baron, her brother, the disability inflicted by one angry swoop of the baron's sword. To the care of his cousin and to the correction of his cousin's affliction, Dr. Shocker has devoted - undaunted by his small successes and major setbacks - a lifetime of novel experimental approaches - Dr. Shocker, an electricity aficionado in the Ben Franklin sense, is a very inventive man, and he will not give up, for there is here - between Egore Schlepstein and Gunder Shocker - more than a blood-bond; there is here, between these to tormented souls, a symbiotic relationship, one depending on, needing, perhaps at times feeding on, the other.

                        Book Description

Unlike previous books on Ploesti, Jay Stout goes well beyond the famous big and bloody raid of August 1943 and depicts the entire 1944 strategic campaign of twenty-plus missions that all but knocked Ploesti out of the war and denied the German war machine the fuel and lubricants it so desperately needed.

While Fortress Ploesti is the narrative history of the entire air campaign to deny the Ploesti oil complex to the Axis powers, it is also a launching point for the author's inquiries into many aspects of the American strategic bombing effort in World War II. It delivers across the board.

Stout, who served as a Marine F/A-18 pilot in the First Gulf War, asks questions about aviation combat history and technique that any modern combat pilot would be dying to ask. He carries the ball far beyond the goal post set by all other Ploesti historians. He has gone out of his way to describe the defenses throughout the campaign, and he brings in the voices of Ploesti's defenders to complement the tales of Allied airmen who brought Ploesti to ruin. He describes the role of the bombers, that of the fighters, the ant-aircraft defenses, even the technique of obscuring the Ploesti complex with smoke.

In the end, Stout's narrative describes the entire Ploesti effort for the very first time in print, and, by proxy, guides the reader through the intricacies of the entire Allied strategic bombing campaign in Europe, and all the weapons and techniques the Axis powers used to parry it. His lucid presentation of complex issues at the tactical and strategic levels is impressive.

Jay Stout's previous books include Hornets Over Kuwait, his Gulf War memoir and, as co-author, The First Hellcat Ace.

5 out of 5 stars Fortress Ploesti - WW II Air War Revisited.......2003-12-02

A well researched account and easy read of one of the most effective bombing campaigns of WW II. The author places the reader in each combat crew position involved in the raids, starting with the well documented August 1, 1943 low level raid and then picking up the less recognized high level raids that ran from April 5, 1944 until August 1944 when the Soviet Army took over. Stout covers the action from all the angles, that of the B-24 crews, the Romanian, Bulgarian, and German fighter pilots and indivduals on the ground.

This a must read for WW II buffs, especially for those air crew members of the past and for todays "fly boys" that have a need to understand their heritage. Jay Stout has covered the complete Ploesti Story. I strongly recommend Fortress Ploesti.

5 out of 5 stars The Entire Ploesti Campaign, Told Well!.......2003-11-21

Having read the advance review copy, I am pleased to record my impressions of this title.

First, let me say that there is a deluge of WWII books coming out these days. Unfortunately, most rehash often-told stories of the war. Fortress Ploesti is not that kind of book. It breaks new ground entirely, and that fact alone makes it a worthwhile addition to the literature on the subject.

The author, himself a combat pilot veteran (Iraq) has long been fascinated with the massive and well-known single bombing expedition of August 1943 against Ploesti. This book, however, includes that mission but also covers in depth all those missions that followed in 1944, a massive strategic campaign of more than twenty missions that had a significant (and yet ironically overlooked) effect on the course of the war.

The author's style is very conversational--easy to read, enjoyable, entertaining, and very enlightening. Included are interviews and recollections of the pilots who participated, including Third Reich pilots, which provides an entirely new perspective on this phase of the war. Stout's experience as a fighter pilot helps describe what these men recalled and experienced. There are also two galleries of photographs, many previously unpublished, but they were not included in my copy of the advance galley.

If you enjoy World War II books in general, and aviation books in particular, you should add this book to your library. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Building Little Italy - a Valuable Story and Reference Tool.......1999-08-31

In Building Little Italy: Philadelphia's Italians Before Mass Migration, Richard Juliani provides a volume that would be of value to many interested readers. Building Little Italy tells the story of the early Italian immigrant to the City of Brotherly Love, complete with the everyday challenges and hurdles faced by this fledgling group. This book brings to life many new details and is in many ways groundbreaking, as little if any has been published in this area before. Dr. Juliani provides a painstakingly researched tome, with statistical information beautifully complimented by wonderful photos. No rocks are left unturned. For those interested in Italian American or European cultural history, Juliani allows you to step into the shoes of an early Italian immigrant - attempting to adjust to a new nation while trying to maintain ties to his people. Some of the immigrants met with more success than others. Several early Italians in Philadelphia contributed a wealth to this ethnically rich city, and others were on hand to see many historical events. In addition to being a fascinating cultural read, Building Little Italy is an excellent reference tool for those studying this area on a scholarly level. This volume will be a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf of many. It is wholeheartedly recommended to any readers interested in Italian American culture or research.
