Difficult Topics Clearly Explained.......2003-11-22

Being the owner of a privately owned corporation, I have many questions regarding the taxation of shareholder distributions. This book consisely explains how various situations are handled. If you don't understand the explanation, the examples clearly drive the point.

I learned about the great variety of financial instruments that I never knew existed.

The examples are entertaining which helps in understanding the topics discussed.

Disappointing and too expensive.......2007-01-10

I was very disappointed with this purchase because very few, if any, of the activities are unique. It's only advantage is that it collates a good number of activities together in one place. However, I don't feel that the price for this collection is worth it given that I found most of these activities on the internet, for free, and on more than one site.

Is this book really worth its pricey tag?.......2002-08-26

After being greatly impressed by the size of the box that this work arrived in I was a little disappointed by the rather cheap looking folder that was contained within. Indoor/Outdoor Team building games for trainers by Harrison Snow is presented in a large triple ring folder that at first glance looks like a standard undergraduate dissertation. However the way the work is presented and the price tag are both justified in the copyright blurb on the very first page.
Indoor/Outdoor is a not just a reference book but a step by step course for those who want to instruct their own team building sessions. As a result the price tag (which is $$more than I am normally comfortable paying for a book) not only buys you the folder but also the right to make photocopies of relevant pages to distribute to those who attend your workshop, and what a workshop it'll be!
Having spent the summer working as an outdoor pursuits instructor I was glad to see many of the best warm ups and ice breakers that I had already learnt succinctly described in a manner that transfers the necessary fun within which all team-building sessions should be framed. There's enough problem solving exercises to keep even the most competent team busy for a least three days and each description is followed by a few generally excellent paragraphs on how to debrief after the exercise. Very few of the exercises need much preparation or investment in equipment and can be attempted by any able bodied person regardless of fitness.
Along with the individual tasks Snow has included a very readable section introducing a few management theories, the need for strong teams and the whole framework of trust, safety and fun within which good workshops must run. He concludes with some exercises that provide a review of the workshop and a few more management theories that are again very well presented.
Like most work on this subject Indoor/Outdoor can occasionally be a little "touchy feely" but never to a nauseating extent. Snow also occasionally makes the assumption that his audience is entirely from the US but although slightly annoying this in no way detracts from the overall excellent quality of his work. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in running their own sessions but also recommend that you either practice on your friends or shadow an experienced leader before instructing paying customers.

Poor Value.......2002-01-11

A tremendous disappointment. One of the more expensive Team Building resource publications available and it does not deliver. In many respects, Mr. Snow has authored a well organized, adequately written resource BINDER. A three ring binder and 241 (mostly single sided) pages of information. Sadly, the liabilities completely outweigh the assets of this selection.

Almost every activity may be found in other, significantly less expensive books. Very few activities feature illustrations or diagrams. Even when included, the pictures may not be worth a thousand words. Those unfamiliar with an activity may have difficulty vizualizing some instructions. Which begs the question if you ARE familiar with the activities, why purchase the book?

The only justification I found for the seemingly disproportionate price was the permission granted by the publisher to photocopy the pages of the publication "for use by participants attending a training workshop conducted by the original purchaser." This might be a terrific value for those who provide training of trainer workshops or who have a large staff to train. If you primarily will be solo or co-facilitating team building sequences with various groups this may be of dubious benefit to you.

Bottom line: If Mr. Snow and/or McGraw-Hill republished the binder as a book (at a fraction of the cost), added more visual-aids and you were looking for a solid resource book, it might be a useful resource. In it's present form I'd recommend you keep searching. Karl Rohnke and several others have authored resource books that will provide you with much, much more for much, much less.

Great Hands on edition.......2000-03-29

This book is a wonderful collection of activities that will build and challenge your team. The books is spiral bound so it allows you to "take it with you" and use it wherever your team is. The activites are not just the typical version, they are challenging, exciting, and when used can help you establish a solid foundation. The book is easy to follow and does include some diverse games and activities. No two are alike.

The scope of this text is stunning! From ancient mythology thru middle-ages and into modern times, Ms. Atwood has recapitulated and amalgamated the most lofty and intelligent book on metaphysics in english, possibly of all time. It will require MANY readings, over MANY years as the abstruse idea unfolds and develops within your mind/spirit. All riddled out!.......2003-05-20

This book is my first introduction into the world of the Hermetic practice. The book is like reading a 560 page riddle, otherwise it does seem to touch base on a little of everything pertaining to Hermetics. If you can read between the lines and start to grasp what she is saying then you should be able to start on the journey of Hermaticism.

Mary Anne Atwood's, 'A Suggestive Inquiry Into Hermetic Mystery' is the only text any Sincere, Earnest, and Intelligent aspirant to Adeptship in Hermetic Theory and Practice needs! Granted, it conceals as much as it reveals, but that is par for the course. Read and re-read the excellent introduction by Mr. Wilmhurst, it is a gem. Do the same with the 'Table-talk' included as an appendix. Then and only then should you proceed to the very recondite text. Ms. Atwood is a most able guide through the intricate labyrinth that is Hermeticism.

This book is indeed an extremely important one; a distillation of decades of study of the ancient Hermetic Arts. Mary Ann South Atwood wrote it, and her father, who taught her full-time from girlhood, had it published in London in 1850. He also owned a significant library of ageless wisdom texts,that he later gave to the newly developing Theosophist movement blossoming in London, New York and India.

Far more than a simple description of "hieophants", (hierophant - teacher) this detailed and stunningly erudite tome is packed with information about the transmutation of spirit into matter and vice versa. Its historical and geographical spread are phenomenal. The funny thing is, soon after they'd had it published, she and her father had extreme misgivings about allowing out such precious wisdom. That opinion combined with a "conversion" of sorts to a radical Christianity caused them to gather up all the books they'd printed. They then burned these on their lawn. Only a few remained, enough for a complete copy to be re-released. Mine is published by Julian Press of New York, in 1960.

Evolution - the big picture.......2000-11-26

This reference starts off by noting problems in evolutionary theory, particularly that while short-term microevolution shows Darwinian characteristics, long-term macroevolution based on the fossil record does not, with species suddenly appearing and then persisting for long periods with few changes. Vertebrates are proposed as a model for studying evolution, noting that they are a monophyletic group, have sexual reproduction, share a similar body plan, and most importantly have an excellent fossil record. While the knowledgeable reader will find this reference interesting in its integration of the forces affecting vertebrate evolution, the more general reader will find a variety of topics from fundamentals of population genetics to evolutionary development to the origins of major vertebrate groups, useful reading.

Newcombe grew up in Missouri, and was absolutely fascinated by wildlife of all kinds. He particularly enjoyed the outdoor observation of these creatures in a natural setting. Joshua Goldstein analyzes the near-total exclusion of women from combat forces, through history and across cultures. He concludes that killing in war does not come naturally for either gender, and that gender norms often mold men, women, and children to the needs of the war system.

Endless details to obfluscate the truth.......2006-08-24

The author attempts to overwhelm the reader with endless details from anthropology, history, sociology, psychology, political theory, etc. and endless analysis of factors to discuss the relation of gender and war--all in the service of the white male patriarchal academic establishment.

Meanwhile, under "matriarchies," he has two entries: "lack of evidence...[and] rhesus monkeys." He conveniently assumes that matriarchies would have been the mirror image of patriarchies, i.e., amazonian matriarchies, which allows him to exclude discussion of actual matriarchies--at least one of which still persists in the United States today--the Iroquois.

The reader never learns that indeed there were such matriarchies as the Iroquois, where the mothers of the tribe were empowered to make the decision about whether the males would conduct war. See Doug George-Kanentioo, Iroquois Culture & Commentary (New Mexico: Clear Light Publishers, 2000).

Nor does the reader learn that there are scholars such as Ifi Amadiume, a Professor at Dartmouth College, who has demonstrated the existence of African matriarchies in many works, especially African Matriarchal Foundations (London: Karnak House, 1987).

The Feminist Male Maker.......2004-04-01

Goldstein's approach should grab male readers especially interested in understanding how gender shapes the war system, for he comes at it from an interdisciplinary angle that attempts to thoroughly cover the popular explanations for gender roles in war and then challenge them with the most up to date evidence. His conclusion after all of this is that gender roles are not inevitable or inherent in human nature, but that human culture, responding to subtle differences between the genders, shapes the war system along gendered lines. A must read for all gender scholars and activists.

Complete and fair assesment.......2004-03-28

I read the book some months ago, and I got the impression that it was quite complete, and fairly assessed. On the other hand, it almost dropped from my hands half a dozen times, because, although the subject was very interesting, most of the time the reading was boring. Therefore, my rate is 5 (content) and 2/3 (pleasure of reading).

Other books on war that I would recommend would be:

- above all, the best) "War on Human Civilization" by Azar Gat;
- also, "War before Civilization. The Myth of the Peaceful Savage", by Lawrence Keeley; "How War Began" by Keith F. Otterbein; and "War and Peace and War: The Rise and Fall of Empires" by Peter Turchin.
