Book Description
Business writer and former accountant Michael C. Thomsett offers individual investors step-by-step advice on how to read each of the indicators found in the financial press, and how to use those indicators decisively. He says that by establishing goals tied to specific indicators, investors can better determine when to buy, sell, hold, or stay away from the market.
Just the Financial Facts features a series of proven visual tools (worksheets and forms, graphs and charts, checklists, examples, key points and sidebars) to make the material easy to understand and - just as importantly - easy to apply, even for those without formal financial training.

Not what I had hoped (or expected)..........2001-07-18
This book wasn't what I expected... It was great if you're new to the stock market and you'd like to learn what kinds of financial information are available and what it all means. However, it didn't talk enough about which information was useful and why. If you're familiar with financial information and you know how to read it...I'll save you the cost of this book: 'Ignore the general market information (DJIA, S&P Index, etc.) and pay attention only to information that is specific to the stocks that are of interest to you.'

Book Description
An extensive astronomy reference, beautifully illustrated and expertly written.
The Firefly Encyclopedia of Astronomy is organized A-Z with concise details on each topic. The pages are profusely illustrated with vivid computer graphics, photography and archival images. Included are accessible contributions by 650 world-leading astronomers covering:
- History from the Big Bang to present
- Famous astronomer bios
- Key space missions since the launch of Sputnik
- The work of observatories worldwide.
"Backyard stargazing is a lot more fun when you understand what you're looking at. The Orion Nebula is pretty in any telescope, but the view is all the more inspiring when you know that the light you're seeing left the nebula as the Roman Empire fell and that new stars are continually forming from the glowing gas.
"It's appropriate that professionals and amateurs should come together to produce such a work, because at the dawn of the twenty-first century the line between the two communities is becoming blurred. Technology is putting state-of-the-art capabilities into the hands of backyard observers, many of whom are now collaborating with professionals to study phenomena as diverse as Martian dust storms and bursts of energetic radiation from distant galaxies.
"Wherever your astronomical interests take you, this encyclopedia will be a welcome and valuable companion."
Rick Fienberg
Editor-in-Chief of Sky and Telescope magazine

Great Astronomy Resource.......2005-03-23
A wonderful astronomy resource. Has informative articles written by amateurs smattered throughout -- in just the right amounts and at just the right places. Similar to my "The Universal Book of Astronomy : From the Andromeda Galaxy to the Zone of Avoidance" book, but with more depth to most definitions. Many full color illustrations and photos. The only thing I don't like in the Firefly one better than the "The Universal Book of Astronomy : From the Andromeda Galaxy to the Zone of Avoidance" book is that this book doesn't list out the stars of each constellations with distances like the Universal Book does. The only solution -- buy both! :)

Book Description
First published by Wiley in 1917, it set the standard for the entire field. Maintaining the same convenient layout and Patterson format with the same high standards of quality, here is the first revision of this invaluable work since 1950. With expanded coverage and new terms, it captures the wealth of scientific discoveries made in the last four decades, including the DNA double helix, practical computers and microelectronic devices, plate tectonics and man in space. Once again German and English-speaking scientists and engineers have an up-to-date and authoritative resource for understanding each other's language.

If you are a chemist or working for the chemistry related field & know little of german then it is the best book to translate your reference papers from german to english by your self than exposing your field of work by giving some agencies for translating the papers.

Great story, needs editing........2006-12-01
This is a hilarious book. It is labeled a spoof of the greatest sci-fi classics (Star Wars) and it does rip off a good deal from Episodes I and IV, but the story itself is surprisingly original. I have laughed more during this book than any other I can remember.
The thing keeping this from 5-star status is the many typographical and grammatical errors in the text. There are still two or three lines I don't understand because of it.
Still, as this book gains popularity (#3.179 million as of 11/30/06), hopefully a second edition is in the works, and most of all, I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL.
An OK book.......2004-02-19
This book is funny, but it gets pointless in the beggining of the book, it doesnt really make sense, but it gets a whole lot better towards the end. Still its not the best, it has some good jokes, and there is an awsome space race and space battle. But if your not into sci-fi dont even bother.

Oustanding introductory account to the Russo-Finnish War of 1939-40.......2007-10-08
Written back in 1973, this small (200 pages) book is a good introduction to the Russo-Finnish War of 1939-1940. Its well written, easy to follow and read and provides a clear broad outline of the causes and events leading up to the outbreak of the war, and then of the war itself. It uses a lot of first-hand anecdotes as well as a summation of Finnish tactics in the unequal struggle. The books well-illustrated with a good collection of black and white photographes, as well as Finnish cartoons of the times (and having worked with a group of Finns at one time a few years ago and been introduced to some drinking games of theirs, the humor rings true to this reader).
The Russo-Finnish war was both a prelude to, and a footnote in, the Second World War. The authors more or less make this clear and also do a good job of illustrating the vacillation of both the western countries and the other scandanavian democracies as Finland was faced with first the threat, and then the application of, overwhelming military force from the Soviet Union. This book is told from the Finnish point of view and the heroism of the Finnish Armed Forces is evident in every page of this book - the small and ill-equipped Finnish Army killed one million Russian soldiers at a cost of 25,000 Finnish dead and 55,000 wounded.
As other reviwers have mentioned, I would reccommend following up this book with Trotter's "A Frozen Hell", as it covers the causes and politcal aspects of the war more thoroughly. I would also mention that this book does not cover the Continuation War - where the Finns attempted to reclaim the land that the Soviet Union had stolen through aggression. To their credit, the Finns advanced only up to their borders and no further, refusing to join the German attack on Leningrad for example. In the end, Finland lost the war due to sheer disparity in size and resources, but they gave the Soviets enough of a bloody nose that at the end of WW2, Finland was the one country allied with Germany that was not occupied.
All in all, an excellent introduction to the subject and well worth reading.
The Finnish Spirit...Humor at it's best........2006-12-26
When the Soviets attack Finland in 1939, they were not expecting the Finnish welcome that they recieved. The Finns were not necessarily prepared but they were not caught unaware either. What resulted of this ill advised attack was shameful for the mighty Soviet military machine. First they were under equiped for prolonged war and severe weather. Second, they were fighting in a school book military campagin fashion. Both, were capitalized upon by the determined Finns, the first was in terms of weather, nature was at their side. Then secondly, the Finns fought in an un-orthdox gorilla type warfare that caught the Soviets by surprise. Eloise Engle and Lauri Pannanen's book is a joy to read. It is witty and fluent in prose and style. I have re-read this book often because it encourages me when things get hectic. The Finns never lost their sense of humor throughout this devestating invasion. They kept their wits about them and fought overwellming odds with good attitudes. This book is an excellent read for cold winter days, such as today. I recommend it for any would be military buff who wants to know about cold weather tactics or winter military campaigns. The depiction of the finns fighting spirit and humor in this book should make you smile. It is a modern day depiction of David against Golith, well worth the price.
Preservation of Finnish Autonomy.......2005-08-12
Absolutely great book on a subject little known outside of Finland. Great battle recollections from participants along with historical background of both Finland, as a country, and the onset of war with Russia, make this a great read.
Quick reading, good overview.......2005-07-15
This is a book that covers one of the less covered topics, the Soviet attack on Finland. The author presents the events and overall battles and engagements in a fluid and flowing manner. The book is a good read and provides insight as to the tenacity of the Finnish soldiers in defending their home country against a more modern and better equipped Soviet Army.
What finally caused the surrender of Finland was the complete overwhelming superiority of men, material, and equipment that the Soviets had and the Finnish could not sustain against in prolonged combat. The author describes how the poorly led and supplied Soviet troops were being surrounded and eliminated by the Finns in the winter combat. Also describes is how the Finns immediately used the captured equipment and ammunition to fill their non-existing inventories.
This book provides an excellent overall strategic view. Specific battles and the personal first hand view of the fighting is not described in this book. This book is worthwhile reading.
It should also be remembered that Finland was the only minor Axis ally not occupied by the Soviets after World War 2. The bravery of their soldiers and their tenacity may have been a significant factor in their independence.
A little known war that could have drastically changed WWII.......2004-06-25
There are a number of books available on the Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union, which was fought for a few months from Dec '39 to March '40. Even so, the war is little known in the west, coming as it did just after the Nazi/Soviet partition of Poland, during the Sitzkrieg, and just before the Nazi invasions of Norway and Denmark. Little Finland held off a Soviet onslaught for several months before superior numbers and equipment finally wore the Finnish defenders out. Meanwhile, the world debated whether to aid the Finns, occupied as they were with Nazi aggressions.
The book is written anecdotally, giving a flavour of the nature of the fighting in the war, rather than a strategic overview of causes and a tactical description of the campaign. This is a wise move as the Winter War was tactically simple - there were no fancy maneuvers, it was basically soldier-to-soldier fighting in the dark and cold, where the elements were at least as dangerous as the enemy. That's not to say that statistics and battles are not described, but they are not the important or interesting part of the book.
The authors are Finnish and the story is told almost exclusively from the Finnish point of view. Originally written in 1973, they would not have had access to Soviet records. They do give a feel for the Soviet soldier's lot, however, based on interviews with POW's. I am satisfied that, with the information available at the time, the facts are accurate - the Finns DID wipe out entire divisions (with the help of the cold and snow), the Soviets DID curl up into defensive positions and lose the initiative, and the guerrilla tactics used by the Finns (much like those used in current-day Iraq and in Vietnam) rubbed the invaders' nerves raw and sapped morale. Most interesting, however, is the analysis of the political situation from the Finnish point-of-view: would acceptance of foreign aid, for example, actually extend the war and/or hamper negotiations during the peace talks?
Unfortunately, the story is incomplete. At 200 pages, there's ample room to include the Continuation War (after Finland formally allied itself with Nazi Germany and tried to reclaim their lost territory). Also, the writing style is almost juvenile, compared to the smooth and precise prose of Keegan, Churchill, etc. English is probably not the first language of at least one of the authors. Therefore, the book is interesting and useful, as far as it goes, but it is too short and not written well enough to be called a classic.
Book Description
The last general history of Jamaica was published in 1960. Since then the country has become an independent nation and has developed a new sense of national identity out of the experience of 450 years of European colonization, African slavery, and the transplanting of immigrant populations from India, China, Lebanon, and Syria. The Jamaican people have never accepted what was presented to them as the history of Jamaica. The heroes of the British Empire are not their heroes, and their battlefields are in Jamaica, the Caribbean and Afro-America, wherever Afro-American freedom fighters have struggled for liberty. A new interpretation of the Jamaican experience is long overdue. In this book, Sir Philip Sherlock teams up with documentarian Dr. Hazel Bennett to tell the story of the Jamaican people from an Afro-Jamaican rather than a European perspective. Africa is at the center of the story; by claiming Africa as homeland, Jamaicans gain a sense of historical continuity, of identity, of roots-an experience they share with fifty million Afro-Americans throughout the Americas and across four centuries. This is a book for the 1990s and beyond; for the present generation and generations to come; for Jamaicans at home and abroad; and for all Afro-Americans who are descendants of the great diaspora.
Customer Reviews:
So What's Been Going On?.......2001-03-04
This book's Jamaican-African perspective seems to run out of steam about the time of Independence (1962). Coverage of the 20th century revolves around Marcus Garvey, Alexander Bustamente, and Norman Manley. The six post-Independence Prime Ministers appear in photos, but only Bustamente is discussed. There is no mention of the 1970s social unrest, nor of the rivalry between Michael Manley and Edward Seaga. Considerable attention is given to athletics and the creative arts, but very little to political economy. "Development," we learn, "is a state of mind" (410), and Jamaica's biggest development problem is not the lack of gainful employment (a view attributed to the Rastas and a group of women writers), but the Eurocentric, colonial system of education (402). This deliberate evasion of any possible controversy and of contemporary history suggests this book was written as a secondary school textbook.
History from the African-Jamaican point of view.......2000-03-26
In any history the selection of the important points which make up that history will make or break the work. Philip Sherlock and Hazel Bennett have written a work which selects people, places and events from the Afraican-Jamaican point of view rather than from a European point of view. The normal list of government officals and events is either not contained in this work or is played down. At the same time the African-Jamican is showcased. For example, Columbus gets about five pages in this book while Gargey has his own chapter and many additional pages. As the authors point out, this work differs significantly from other histories, most of which have been written from the perspective of the coloniser. The book presents a new perspective on Jamaican history which needs to be read and understood but done so with the other works. Only then will the failues of each type balance out to give the reader a total picture of Jamaican history.
A non-British history of Jamaica........2000-01-06
Sherlock does a lengthy look at Jamaican history from a Jamaican point of view, with a special emphasis and sympathy to the enlsaved majority of Jamaica. Although most of the material in the book is not new, the interpretation is fresh, and from a perspective that has not been heard from often in works dealing with Caribbean history.

perfect, no frills, and non-pretentious.......2002-03-16
I read this in 1991 at age 12. It was perfect. These kids live in jamaica, hot and muggy and looking like the typical carribean island. But there home was once a Brittish colony. They struggle between two cultures; the relaxed west indian mannerisms, and the stiff ones the Brits left behind. A must-read for all school children in the US.

I want to go home.
Every day she tells me,
We are home, Angelina.
New York is home now.
Angelina’s heart aches for Jamaica, and no matter how much Mama talks of having a better life in New York, Angelina still dreams about mangos, johnnycake, rainbow-colored birds, and the warmth of the sand under her feet. Then one day Mama sees something in the paper about Carnival in Brooklyn, New York, and she thinks she may have found a way to soothe Angelina’s homesickness.
With vibrant colors that seem to dance right off the page, Jeanette Winter pays homage to Jamaica and the traditions of the West Indian people.

A Pioneer Black Writer.......2003-06-01
In what Peter Abrahams calls an autobiography and meditation, "The Black Experience in the 20th Century" offers the personal account of Abrahams' experience as a black writer who began his career at the peak of the Pan-African movement.
By becoming a part of the liberating movement and associating with major players of the time, Peter Abrahams analyzes and delivers a thorough understanding black intellectualism -- its roots, its resolution, its pioneers, its personalities and its path.
"So [Marcus] Garvey redefined colour to serve our interests. He wanted his black folk to be equal of al other colours. He wanted all blacks - and for him it included all shades of black - to be as proud of their colour as were the whites of theirs: no intermarriage, no mixing of blood."
The liberation tactics often used by Black freedom fighters has often left the rest of the world questioning their respective methodology. Thus, Abrahams also questions Garvey's "Back to Africa" movement and the antics of Jomo Kenyatta in waging the Mau Mau war in Kenya.
"One of the saddest experiences in my life has been to watch, over time, some fine men being changed over circumstances." Abrahams gives his recollection of Kenyatta and the Mau Mau war.
"On that first journey back to Africa, when she was still in bondage, Kenyatta was an old friend from our London days. We walked the beautiful mountainous land together, met the people, shared out ideas with them, were close to them - which was why so many fought and died for the vision of the freedom and land he promised them. More than 11,000 mainly Kikuyu died in what the British government and the white settlers called the Mau Mau rebellion and the blacks called their freedom struggle. It was both a physical and propaganda war, with the propaganda at times seeming the bigger war. Kenyatta, in particular, and the Kikuyu in general were demonized."
Abrahams was born in South Africa in 1919 and just upon entering his manhood, became a seaman as a means to earn a living, thereby escaping the many evils of apartheid in his homeland. He eventually settles in England and there he begins his political journey as a writer and messenger of the free African word in a not so free world for any type of African.
He lives through World War II; a time many Africans chose to adopt socialist and communist ideas, while also finding liberation in Marxism. The poltical support blacks gave to these parties opened doors that created opportunities for Africans from the Diaspora to meet and develop deeper strategies for African emancipation.
Abrahams gets to meet other black literati including Langston Hughes, Richard Wright and W.E.B Dubois. These men were his friends and he goes into detail about their personalities, how their lives shaped their writing, and thus their unique epistle to the world.
The first half of Abrahams account is extremely lively and filled with the drama of Africanist movement. His discussion of the use of language, especially English as a freedom tool provides a unique slant on the contribution blacks have made to literature and communication in general.
His hypothesis on Black living comes from experience and is indeed worth reading to gain a new perspective. It would suffice if the book continued on this path, with Abrahams perhaps following through on the lives of some of these leaders.
This book however is an autobiography, and thus half of it is about Abrahams' life in Jamaica. The reader is led into a literal trap, which seemingly takes a while to recover from. Meaning the reader is led to believe this is a thorough, account on who our African leaders are, how they did it and perhaps why Africa is in its current state.
Indeed Abrahams provides some of these answers, and brilliantly so, which makes the book hard to put down. But, when Abrahams begins his account of life in Jamaica, one is led to believe he will eventually change the course of the book, and continues to describe African thought. This expectation comes chapter after chapter, and indeed, sadly, it means reading about Jamaican as well as West Indian politics and Abrahams' role as a journalist there.
"The Black Experience in the 20th Century," ends disappointingly, but as reflected in its title the novel is about Abrahams' experience as a Black man, and "Black" thought and his life just provides a window into the lives of some African leaders.
Product Description
An intimate description of growing up in two distinctly different societies with little parental guidance. Shades of color and intolerance are dealt with as the author struggles to understand human behavior, marriage, conflict, and the ethics used between people in the workplace.
