Landing a new job is hard work. Robert Gardella, assistant director of Alumni Career Services at Harvard Business School, believes it also "is one of the most important things that professionals do" today, as changing times and increasing opportunities mean "they are doing it much more frequently." In The Harvard Business School Guide to Finding Your Next Job, he lays out a complete program that should expedite the process no matter what your situation. After acknowledging the many intellectual and emotional considerations involved, and conceding "there are few absolutes" because the process "is an art, not a science," Gardella describes a concrete but flexible program for building a reference base, preparing résumés and cover letters, formulating strategies to locate appropriate openings, handling interviews, and negotiating offers. Among his key tips: Fully inventory your skills, interests, and experiences before you begin; draw up a list of specific, related accomplishments that can be quantified on your résumé and stressed in your interviews; and develop associated networking systems--which ultimately are responsible for two out of every three job offers--by, in part, volunteering reciprocal information and referrals to those who help you. --Howard Rothman

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time with this one........2002-07-09

Hackneyed, trite, and a waste of money.

    5 out of 5 stars Start here.......2002-04-25

I thought this was a great book. It's not that detailed about any one topic, but gives an overview of the whole job search process. It gives you perspective, and that's useful no matter where you are in your search. And for each topic, he provides a bibliography for more detailed study. If you're just starting to look for a job, then this is a book that will give you a framework for organizing how you might go about it, and then you can refine your understanding by finding the books in his bibliography. You might say its purpose is to keep the disparate parts of the job search coherent and unified, and focused toward your goal of getting a job.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and Complete.......2002-03-13

Outstanding book, covers all topics with clarity. No fluff or hype. Excellent for organizing yourself, covering all bases. References other books for further info on specific items.

2 out of 5 stars Fair introduction to the career transition process.......2001-08-12

This book is a good introduction for new job seekers and professinal who are starting a career transition. The book tend to be fairly academic and away from the practical aspect of the job seeking process. It does a good job on the marketing campaign and provides good advices on the writting of resume.

    3 out of 5 stars Good.......2001-06-15

The book provides some good insights, however it is too academic and sometimes redundant. But anyway, the reading is good and will give you a framework to develop further specific tactics to find your next job.

Molecular Systematics and Plant Evolution discusses the diversity and evolution of plants, taking a molecular approach. It looks at population genetics, phylogeny (history of evolution) and developmental genetics, to provide a framework from which to understand evolutionary patterns and relationships amongst plants. The international (Europe and USA) panel of contributors is composed of respected systematists and evolutionary biologists, who have brought together a wide range of topics from the forefront of research while keeping the text accessible to students. It has been written for senior undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers in the fields of botany, systematics, population/conservation genetics, phylogenetics and evolutionary biology.

In a recent past times, the knowledge about the organisms was based upon morphological characters. They were agruped or separeted by yours diferences or similarities. Today, the morphological features yet posses a great amount, but the molecular data about the organisms in general sense, and the plants in a specific vision, bring to discussion a new view about the plant organization. The Hollingsworth et al. book's brings to botanical community, the most recent concepts about plant phylogeny and evolution. Description:
The Menispermaceae family contains ca. 72 genera with 450 species that are almost entirely tropical. Its phylogeny at the tribal level has never been examined using molecular data. Here we used DNA sequences of the chloroplast matK gene and trnL-F regions, and the nuclear ITS region to study the delimitation and position of the tribe Menispermeae within the family and its subtribal monophyletic groups. Family-wide phylogenetic analyses of the chloroplast data produced two strongly supported clades. The first clade contains two subclades: Coscinieae including Arcangelisia and Anamirta, and Tinosporeae sensu lato including Fibraureae, supported by morphological characters, such as traits of the cotyledon, stylar scar and embryo. The second clade consists of the tribes Menispermeae sensu DC. and Tiliacoreae Miers. All our analyses surprisingly recognized that tribe Menispermeae is not monophyletic unless tribe Tiliacoreae is included, suggesting that characters of cotyledon and stylar scar are very important for the infrafamilial classification, and that endosperm presence vs. absence was over-emphasized in traditionally tribal division of the family. Our topologies indicate a secondary loss of endosperm. The monophyly of two subtribes of the tribe Menispermeae, Stephaniinae and Cissampelinae, is supported by the cpDNA and ITS data, as well as by morphological characters, including aperture types and shapes, and colpal membrane features of pollen grains, and sepal number of male flowers. The Cocculinae was recognized as a paraphyletic group containing the remaining genera of the tribe Menispermeae.

The "girls," as Hixon Taite refers to his two daughters, are quite a handful. Hixon, a devoted father, takes you along on the wild ride of raising two "handfuls" in the Deep South. Constantly at odds with his wife on the "proper" rearing of young ladies, he sidesteps her gentle efforts to correct him (and them) and embarks on a life-long mission to raise his beloved girls as he sees fit. They careen from the proper techniques of spitting, to bluffing a hand in poker, skipping school and corralling slithering snakes. Science projects, driving lessons, boyfriends and even weddings add to the fun. It's a roller coaster ride for this Southern father as he battles his parent's attempts to spoil the girls (and buying VERY loud toys to torture him) and his wife wondering on a daily basis why she married him. Through it all, you share in his love and devotion, not only to his beloved girls, but to the "girl" who married him.

                                            Book Description

In general terms, one way of describing the world we live in is to say that it is made up of nature and society, and that human beings belong to both. This is the first volume to be published that addresses the historical contexts of the relations between these two characteristics of human nature. Individual essays and the general conclusions of the volume are important not only for our understanding of the evolution of knowledge of nature and of society, but also for an awareness of the types of truth and perception produced in the process.

                                                Book Description

Stark's conjectures on the behavior of $L$-functions were formulated in the 1970s. Since then, these conjectures and their generalizations have been actively investigated. This has led to significant progress in algebraic number theory.

The current volume, based on the conference held at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD), represents the state-of-the-art research in this area. The first four survey papers provide an introduction to a majority of the recent work related to Stark's conjectures. The remaining six contributions touch on some major themes currently under exploration in the area, such as non-abelian and $p$-adic aspects of the conjectures, abelian refinements, etc. Among others, some important contributors to the volume include Harold M. Stark, John Tate, and Barry Mazur.

The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in number theory.

                                                      Book Description

Geography has recently seen something of a 'body craze'. It is no longer enough to simply examine the broad and wide sweeping maps of power and meaning. The micro-level politics that imbue bodies and spaces are increasingly being held up to scrutiny. the body is as political as the nation state. However, there is litle in the discipline that attests to the fluid, runny, gaseous nature of bodies. The leaky, messy zones of the inside and outside of bodies and their resulting spatial relationships remain largely unexamined in the discipline. This book revolves around three case studies:*pregnant bodies in publicplaces,*Men's bodies in domestic toilets and bathrooms, *Managers' bodies in Central Business Districts. These bodies share an abject materiality. The pregnant body threatens to expel matter from inside. It is often constructed as 'ugly' and as 'matter out of place' in the public sphere. Geographers have ignored men's bodies in domestic toilets and bathrooms boundaries are broken and then made solid again.Women and men managers in Central Business districts are increasingly expected to have firm and flexible bodies. highly tailored, dark coloured business suits provide straight lines and starched creases that give the appearence of a body which is impervious to leakage or penetration. The case studies illustrate that bodies and spaces are socially constructed and yet have an undeniable materiality and fluidity. Ignoring the everyday materiality of bodies that leak and seep is not a harmless ommission, rather it contains a political imperative that helps keep masculinism intact.

                                                        Book Description

If $G$ is a reductive algebraic group acting rationally on a smooth affine variety $X$, then it is generally believed that $D(X)^G$ has properties very similar to those of enveloping algebras of semisimple Lie algebras. In this book, the authors show that this is indeed the case when $G$ is a torus and $X=k^r\times (k^*)^s$. They give a precise description of the primitive ideals in $D(X)^G$ and study in detail the ring theoretical and homological properties of the minimal primitive quotients of $D(X)^G$. The latter are of the form $B^x=D(X)^G/({\mathfrak g}-\chi({\mathfrak g}))$ where ${\mathfrak g}= \textnormal{Lie}(G)$, $\chi\in {\mathfrak g}^\ast$ and ${\mathfrak g}-\chi({\mathfrak g})$ is the set of all $v-\chi(v)$ with $v\in {\mathfrak g}$. They occur as rings of twisted differential operators on toric varieties. It is also proven that if $G$ is a torus acting rationally on a smooth affine variety, then $D(X/\!/G)$ is a simple ring.

                                                            Book Description

This book contains important review articles on topics in and closely related to the Representation Theory of Algebras. Most of them contain major new results not published elsewhere. It appears at a time of increasing interaction between the Representation Theory of Algebras and other areas of mathematics (e.g. group representations, quantum groups, vector bundles, and C* saveebras). Several of the articles are concerned with such interactions or are motivated by problems arising from them.

Containing both expository and research articles on the theory of elliptic curves, this collection covers a range of topics, from Langlands's theory to the algebraic geometry of elliptic curves, from Iwasawa theory to computational aspects of elliptic curves. This book is especially significant in that it covers topics comprising the main ingredients in Andrew Wiles's recent result on Fermat's Last Theorem.
