        Book Description

Do you know: · What might happen if you fall into a black hole? · That the Universe does not have an edge? · That the reason it gets dark at night is proof of the Big Bang? · That cosmic particles time-travel through the atmosphere defying death? · That our past, present and future might all coexist "out there"? With two remarkable ideas, Albert Einstein revolutionized our view of the Universe. His first was that nothing can travel faster than light-the ultimate speed limit. This simple fact leads to the unavoidable conclusion that space and time must be linked together forever as Spacetime. With his second monumental insight, Einstein showed how Spacetime is warped and stretched by the gravity of all objects in the Universe and even punctured by black holes. But such possible twisting of Spacetime allowed a magic not even Einstein could have imagined: time-travel. Theoretical physicist Jim Al-Khalili finally lays science fiction to rest as he opens up Einstein's Universe. Leading us gently and light-heartedly through the dizzying world of our space and time, he even gives us the recipe for a time machine, capable of taking us Back to the Future, to Alice's Wonderland, or on a trip with the Terminator.

5 out of 5 stars Black Holes, Wormholes & Time Machines.......2007-03-26

Astrophysics for those of us who never took a physics class in school. You need not be a genius to understand the majority of this book. It's easy to read and explains complex topics in a relatively simple manner. This book is similar to Kip Thorne's book: Black Holes & Time Warps, but does also go over some information that Thorne's book doesn't cover (and Thorne's book goes over some info that this one doesn't). I place both books about equally in their readability to the common person, and amount of interesting information about our universe. This does a great job of explaining different theories about the universe and why some are more likely than others, as well as faults with various theories. Very interesting, but certainly not light reading!

        3 out of 5 stars Very Interesting...but slow .......2005-03-14

Al-Khalili clearly explains and breaks down modern physics into plain and simple English. I have not read a more easy-to-read physics book in my life. Although there is one thing that the reader will find annoying in the book. He frequently deviates from the subject matter and goes off on a completely different path that sometimes has nothing to do with what he was talking about. Half the book isn't about Black holes, Wormholes, and Time Machines either but about other areas of physics. Overall though, a very well-written book worth your reading. (assuming of course that you have NO background in Physics!)

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-01-22

Mr. Khalili combines a deep understanding of his subject matter with the rare ability to present it clearly in terms understandable to the layman.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is Mindblowing!.......2003-01-26

As long ago as I can remember, I have been interested in the way that the universe was created and the way it works. This book has all the answers that I've been searching for these long years. Jim Al-Khalili cuts through the big words and incomprehensible scientific lingo and gets straight to the point. As a student of cosmotology myself, I didn't need to have things spelled out in such a condescending manner, but others who read this book and have low IQ test scores will find it very helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and interesting to read!.......2002-01-04

This book is very well written with amazing examples to aid the reader with such complex topics
as general relativity and quantum mechanics which can be quite confusing at first glance. I am
sure to read this again as to gain a further grasp on the subjects in this addicting book that I had a
hard time putting down. It is fascinating thoughtful, thought provoking, and pleasing to read at
the same time, with many ties to popular culture and up to date physics. I must also admit that
this book made me look up to the night sky several times after I read it and in my opinion is a
great read for the physicist and non physicist alike! The author has a knack for explaining complex
ideas that involve the vastness of the universe and the tiniest theories of Quantum mechanics with
clarity and insight. This is a good one to add to the library which I will for sure pull out of mine
        several times for future reference.

              Book Description

From the savannas of Africa to modern-day labs for biomechanical analysis and molecular genetics, Smithsonian Intimate Guide to Human Origins reveals how anthropologists are furiously redrawing the human family tree. Their discoveries have spawned a host of new questions: Should chimpanzees be included as a human species? Was it the physical difficulty of human childbirth that encouraged the development of social groups in early human species? Did humans and Neanderthals interbreed? Why did humans supplant Neanderthals in the end? In answering such questions, Smithsonian Intimate Guide to Human Origins sheds new light on one of the most important questions of all: What makes us human?

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A good book for understanding the ancestry of human beings.......2007-05-12

An excellent and brilliant introductory book for the big puzzle of human origins! The writer transforms the anthropological and evolutionary literatures into a popular reading. You may witness milestones of the dispersal of human beings and find it is easier than imagined to discuss the history of human evolution with your friends and kids. It is worthy to bring it home from a museum shop and from Amazon.com as well.

5 out of 5 stars A short but very interesting overview.......2007-05-07

"Smithsonian Intimate Guide to Human Origins" is a lively and very readable presentation of mankind's prehistory. Although it is rather short
and several details of what is known today about the topic are not
mentioned, you will enjoy reading it and find a lot of new and fascinating
facts and ideas even if you already own a number of books about the
emergence of humans. The language is clear and avoids unnecessary
technical jargon. The book is beautifully illustrated with many colour
photographs/pictures and you will go through its pages with pleasure.
Very useful are the section "Further Reading" and the index at the end.
In sum, I would recommend the book to the reader who is looking for a
starting point to the field of human origins as well as to readers
who have already studied a number of books about human evolution.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch reporting perfectly executed.......2007-01-15

There are several reasons why this book belongs in every home and high school science classroom:

              1) Carl Zimmer is an excellent journalist. He's a talented writer whose interesting to read, his work focuses nearly exclusively on science along with publishing general works on evolution so he's understands the science behind our human origins, and his talent as a writer allows him to write at a level a 10th grader can understand rather than often cryptic jargon of someone immersed in the research. He also humanizes his reporting with several human-interest stories of the scientists behind some of our biggest stories as well as portraying the thrill of "the find of a lifetime" that several fortunate scientists and their teams experience.

              2) The book is beautifully illustrated and photographed. I especially enjoyed the comparative skull photos and illustrations.

              3) This book focuses on a particular game plan, human origins, with very little tangential forays. It spends very little time on the general theory of evolution itself, religious objections, or technical controversies those immersed in the industry debate. Instead Zimmer and his editor provide a journalistic account of the state of our knowledge regarding human evolution, specifically: fossil finds, hypotheses and theories on immigration, technology development and its effect on mutations, and even a chapter on human potential for change in the future.

This would be an excellent supplemental book for a high school biology class or even 100-level college classes due to its relatively short length at a heavily illustrated 165 pages. It been 20 years since I read a book focused exclusively on human origins so I was well rewarded with what we've learned since then along with some great pictures of fossil finds. I was also able to purchase a like-new used book on Amazon for about $7 so this is a no-brainer; order this book!!!

              5 out of 5 stars Human origins.......2007-01-13

This is a wonderful overview of human development and prehistory. It is very readable and interesting. When I finished the book, I felt that I had a much better sense of the origins and development of homo sapiens.

              4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-01-04

This is a well-written book with many fine illustrations. It gives a fine overview of the field without too many details only comprehensible by specialists. It leaves the reader slightly confused but I suspect that the subject is quite confusing so it's ok. I recommend the book as a good introduction to the subject.

                    Book Description

Ten--nine professors and a graduate student--tell forty tales in rhymed verse as they drive a van to a conference from the University of Montana to San Francisco, wedging in two odes to an earthworm & dandelion, four sonnets, four ditties, one villanelle, and singing two original songs. In the spirit and style of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, they embark on a pilgrimage to reap knowledge at the Holy Grail of computer technology in Silicon Valley with one simple rule: "you can speak at any time so long as you speak in rhyme." The themes of the tales are as diverse as the group of reluctant pilgrims, professors Virgil Vulgate, Smokey Cloud, Inger Johnson, Lupe de Vega, Lolo Sandec, T. Osprey Munsch, Tommy Tornado, Lawrence Carrow, Buster White, and graduate student Jose Roberto, "Bob".

                    Book Description

Ã, Ã, Ã, This story offers a rare, funny, bitter, feminist look at war from women actively engaged in it. Published in London in 1930, Not So Quiet...(on the Western Front) is a novel in autobiographical guise that describes a group of British women ambulance drivers on the French front lines during World War 1. As Voluntary Aid Detachment workers, the women pay for the privilege of driving the wounded through shell fire in the freezing cold, on no sleep and an inedible diet, under the watchful eye of their punishing commandant, nicknamed Mrs. Bitch.

3 out of 5 stars Not so Quiet.......2006-03-16

Interesting, personal account of WWI, as seen by a female ambulance driver. Author negatively describes the WWI nastiness as a contrast to Hemingway's romancing of it. Not in Hemmingway's league, but gives a distinct feminine snapshot of that period of time. 3 stars

4 out of 5 stars Eyeopening and Edgy.......2000-09-23

WWI, somwhere in France, freezing, exaushted and lice ridden Britain's upper class young women are "doing their bit" for England. This is a remarkable story, telling the experience of female ambulance drivers in the first world war. The subject matter is graphic, and the language which describes it is poetic and enchanting. It sucks you in to the madness, sleeplessness, and monotany of horror that goes on everyday in Smith's life. It is an excellent read and although fiction, it is based on the diaries of an actual female ambuance driver.

4 out of 5 stars Women and War.......1998-06-03

In Europe during wartime, well-to-do young women were recruited to be ambulance drivers, and very few of these women knew what they were getting into. Smith takes us just behind the front lines and deep into the lives of several of these women. More a story of courage, suffering, and survival than tale of war itself, it parallels the more well-known All Quiet On the Western Front, and was intended as a response from the women's side. Unapologetically and realistically detailed, it will take you away to a time and place that you will remember long after you've finished the book.

                        Book Description

In Russia, both rulers and ruled long endeavoured to transform their country, each in their own forcible way. Their efforts never quite seemed to bring the results hoped for, and despite reform and revolution some things changed very little. This book sets out to relate Russian tradition and circumstances to the events of history and to encourage readers to seek their own explanation of the country's paradox. For this fifth edition of Endurance and Endeavour J. N. Westwood has completely revised the text and bibliography to incorporate recent research and findings from formerly closed archives, and has added a new chapter covering the Yeltsin years.

I read this as a teenager and even though it was hardly a practical observing guide it was a wonderful introduction to the romance of the night sky.
