An easy to read and good Management Control Systems book.......1998-03-11

This book suits a graduate course in basic management control systems very well. It is easy to read, with short and clear-cut chapters containing the essentials. This may be its only disadvantage: Sometimes it is too short and plain in its discussions. The cases makes the book well suited for case based courses.

Rote learning, still common in many schools and universities today, is shown to be ineffective for achieving the goals of individuals and society in an era when creative production of new knowledge is at a premium. In Education - you should read this........2001-11-24

I'm not so sold on concept mapping and v-diagrams (everyone's got their own angle) but Novak's analysis of the shortcomings of education this century is excellent. There have been enormous and important innovations in educational theory this century, but very little of it has been put into practice because of the nature of the institutions.
Never mind - if you read this book, you're bound to gather some really important insights into the nature of learning, creating and using knowledge, and if you're in education or training, you'll come away not only with a higher awareness of learning theory, but some exciting ideas to try in your own practice.

The book focuses on the common visa policy as a case study on the constitutional structure of the European Union. After introducing the nature of visas, the book concentrates on the difficulties in forging a common visa policy at European level. Cooperation on visas has been characterized by a continuous reformulation of the framework for cooperation. The book describes cooperation before the Treaty on European Union adopted at Maastricht, under the Maastricht Treaty, and under the Treaty of Amsterdam. Furthermore, the book traces the essential characteristics of the common visa policy – restrictiveness, flexibility and dependency on activity under the intergovernmental Pillars –, relating these to the nature of the EU and considering the working of the EU pillar structure in this context. a very good book to learn from.......1997-10-09

As a Ph.D. student doing work on adsorption in chemical technology I sought books to get the facts in a way wich I could use in my work. Most books on adsorption deal with the problem on the basis of physical chemistry. This one does so on the basis of processes in industry. So it is the book for the chemical engineer, or the applied chemist.

The book probes such phenomena as the begging of nesting birds, alarm calls in squirrels and primates, carotenoid coloration in fish and birds, the calls of frogs and toads, and weapon displays in crustaceans. Do these signals convey accurate information about the signaler, its future behavior, or its environment? Or do they mislead receivers in a way that benefits the signaler? For example, is the begging chick really hungry as its cries indicate or is it lobbying to get more food than its brothers and sisters?

Searcy and Nowicki take on these and other questions by developing clear definitions of key issues, by reviewing the most relevant empirical data and game theory models available, and by asking how well theory matches data. Searcy and Nowicki are two of the best behaviorists anywhere who study animal communication. This book is a thorough examination of signals that "must be" truthful by their nature and those than the sender can fake. Everyone interested in animal signaling should read this book.

A book of amazing hope coming out of devastation.......2001-04-09

As a Liberian, author Kulah has experience all of the devastation of the seven years of internal war and strife that afflicted his country. He knows first hand capture and threats to him personally. He is one who suffered the loss of many of his friends. There is a reality and accuracy about his writing that gives a good history and background to Liberia. Some of this reality I have also experienced first hand by traveling to Liberia. Midst the devastation of his people, this United Methodist bishop is able to make a profound statement of hope. A must read for anyone who seeks further insight into this troubled land.

A well-done overview.......2001-01-19

Paul Elliott's book is very well-researched and entertaining to read. It doesn't go into a great deal of detail but the author manages to fit quite a bit of information into the seven chapters. The cults covered are the Greek and Roman Mystery cults (one chapter each), the Knights Templar, the Assassins of the Middle East, the Thugs of India, the Ninja clans and the Chinese Boxers. Each chapter stands by itself but there is a fair amount of cross-referencing which helps tie the whole work together. Stylistically, there are a couple of very minor problems such as strange grammar (which may just be a difference between American and British conventions) and the odd use of exclamation points here and there. These shortcomings are easily overlooked, however. If you are interested in history, martial arts or the truth behind certain myths and legends, this book is for you.
