5 out of 5 stars The state of understanding as it exists today.......2005-10-26

Inteller space is the hardest vacuum that we know of. But it is not empty. Over the vast distances there are atoms, molecules, dust grains, radiations and more. It is a coprehensive overview of our current theories as backed up by the most recent observational understanding of the interstellar medium of galaxies as of 2005.

As this is a rapidly developing field, the book is filled with references for the student to find more information from web sites and the like that will contain the most recent findings, research, and theories.

This book is suitable for a course for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and for research scientists. The author is a professor of Astrophysics at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute in the Netherlands and is a senior scientist with the Dutch Space Agency, SRON.

                Book Description

This book is a graduate-level text covering the fundamental physics and chemistry required for a modern understanding of the interstellar medium. Radiation mechanisms are comprehensively presented, and extensive examples are drawn from observations in the X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared, mm/sub mm, and radio observations. This book goes beyond a phenomenological study of the interstellar medium to give a detailed quantitative treatment of the radiative and dynamical interactions between stars and the interstellar medium. With an emphasis on a physical understanding of these processes, the mathematical derivations are clean, elegant and easily understandable by anyone with an undergraduate background in physics.

                  Book Description

Initially this book focuses on the chemical and morphological properties of dust particles, both cosmological and terrestrial, and some of techniques used to gain information. When light or other electromagnetic radiation interacts with dust or other particles it is scattered in all directions. The scattering interaction are relevant to many fields of science: dust affects communications, dust particles affect the output of aerosol monitors, and dust particles are an important astrophysical component, making up a large part of the dark matter in the universe. The electromagnetic forces exerted on these particles may play an important role in bringing the particles together to form larger astronomical bodies.Optics of Cosmic Dust describes what we currently know about cosmic dust, how we know it, and the research efforts undertaken to provide that knowledge. Areas treated include observational information, dust morphology and chemistry, light-scattering models, characterisation methodologies, and backscatter polarisation and dynamics. Suitable as an introductory text, the book is also a reference guide for the advanced researcher.

                        Book Description

For the first time ever in one volume, here are four of the most influential works of Charles Darwin, reprinted in their entirety, each illuminated by commentary from eminent scientist James D. Watson. With this exciting anthology, readers can trace the evolution of Darwin's own thought processes as he challenges conventional wisdom, unveils fundamental laws of nature, and documents the outstanding power and creativity that drives evolution. Included in this anthology are On the Origin of Species, arguably the most important scientific work of the nineteenth century; Voyage of the Beagle, a captivating travelogue richly stocked with observations that helped guide the young Darwin through his evolutionary world view; The Descent of Man, which explored the origins of humans and their history; and The Expressions of Emotions in Man and Animals, which explored the origin and nature of the mind. Darwin stated that "man with all his noble qualities . . . still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin." With his introductory essay, Dr. Watson reveals the inexorable link between Darwin's indelible stamp and its modern representation within the DNA studies pioneered by Dr. Watson, himself. With his separate introductions for each of Darwin's books he goes further to explain how the modern considerations underlying genome research would have been impossible without Darwin, bringing a contemporary relevance to these nineteenth century masterworks.

3 out of 5 stars Good Books, not so good edition.......2007-10-02

The Indelible Stamp is a collection of good books, but I find the edition to be lacking in some respects. There are numerous typos and errors, and I have not made it yet through even the first book. Also, different printings of these texts often have many good images to accompany them that are very condusive to an understanding of the book (for example, a map of the Beagle voyage). This collection has no images except those necessary in Expression of Emotions. However, it is an affordable way to get four of Darwin's best books, and the hardcover version is well put-together. I also found Watson's commentary very useful and enriching.

4 out of 5 stars Room for evolution.......2005-09-10

This is a review of "Darwin: The Indelible Stamp," which includes four of Darwin's books, edited and with commentary by James D. Watson of DNA fame.

Unlike most works of natural history from the mid-19th-century, Darwin's books remain in print for good reasons. Aside from their historic importance, they are well-written and fascinating for all lovers of nature with curious minds. This volume's content needs no review, so I will limit my comments to the book and the editorial decisions, especially since there are numerous other editions of these books readily available.

First, the praise. To have Darwin's four most important books in one volume saves bookshelf space and probably a few dollars as well. The book seems well-made, with clean printing and relatively opaque pages that minimize the ability to see the print on the page below the one you are reading. I find the skeleton on the cover to be rather morbid and the faux-19th-century leather book image on the paper jacket to be out-of-step with Watson's efforts to argue for Darwin's continued relevance, as if any were necessary.

Watson's commentary is too brief: an eight-page forward and three-page commentaries preceding each of the four books. These are interesting pages, mainly giving historical background to the text, rather than the connections between Darwin and modern genomic research, as promised on the back cover. But it doesn't take a James Watson to have written these commentaries.

Unfortunately, it takes more than a James Watson, apparently, to provide a truly first-rate edition. He is hardly a critical editor. The book is coy about what is left in and what is left out. Amazon's editorial review says that the four books are complete--but the book itself refrains from that claim, except for "Origin of Species." So what was left out? It's very hard to say. In two minutes of comparing it to other editions, however, I found that Watson's editorial decisions (surely prompted by the publisher) mainly involve the removal of illustrations. Though the volume does have several illustrations, there are more in other editions. What else did Watson edit out? He doesn't say. My sense is that the text is essentially in tact for all four books, but I can't be sure. Watson also remains silent about what editions of these books were made and why he choose these particular ones to reprint.

To his credit, the footnotes are at the foot of the page, rather than listed as endnotes. But they remain untouched by Watson, even lacking editorial updates of page numbers. That is, when Darwin refers to his own previous work, you get the page number for the edition he used, not for the edition in your hand. More important, the volume lacks an index. While other editions have indexes of various levels of detail, this volume, probably to cut down on the page length, offers no such service and is its greatest liability.

In sum, this is a good volume is you want a collection of Darwin's greatest hits without taking up too much space or money. If you intend to return to these books a lot, you'll want an index and so a different edition. If you want Watson's commentary alone, spend a half-hour at your library.

4 out of 5 stars put high Tc superconductors into a conceptual framework.......2007-09-17

It's a relatively short overview of the theoretical and experimental status of superconductivity. The first part of the book goes into the traditional (and now known to be incomplete) BCS theory. But the main attraction of the book is how it attempts to place the high Tc superconductors within an overall framework of understanding.

The main class of high Tc superconductors discussed is the YBCO (Yttrium-Barium-Copper Oxides). Since the most work has been done on these. Results like the vortex pinning are shown. Along with critical phase transitions that turn off the superconductivity. Major efforts made to understand how to raise both the Tc and the current densities.

The BCS treatment is slightly cursory. If it's this you need, try perhaps an older book on superconductivity.

The narrative should be understandable to an undergrad physics major, at the level of 3rd or 4th year.

After the attack on Fort Sumter, Robert Knox Sneden decided to do his part to save the Union, signing on with the 40th New York Volunteers. Owing to his skills as an artist, Private Sneden was recruited to become a cartographer within a few months. And owing to his skills as both artist and cartographer, Civil War buffs can enjoy Eye of the Storm.

During his time in the army, Sneden kept a detailed diary and made hundreds of sketches in the field. In 1994, four scrapbooks in a Connecticut bank vault were found to contain some 800 drawings, the vast majority of them based on his original sketches. Soon after, a 5,000-page illustrated memoir based on Sneden's diaries was also discovered. Selections from the scrapbooks and memoir make up this marvelous book, which offers firsthand accounts of the action of the Peninsula Campaign and Second Bull Run--as well as the monotony of soldiering between battles. Perhaps the most compelling portion of Eye of the Storm is Sneden's descriptions of Andersonville, the Confederacy's notorious prison camp:

September 7, 1864: Fine weather, but very hot, 110 degrees anywhere in the shade. This terrible heat helps to kill us off at the rate of 100 per day inside the stockade. Dead men may be seen by the score lying all along the brook which runs through the filthy swamp, while others are tearing off their soiled clothes to get thread from the seams, or patches to put on their own ragged clothes.

Sneden's account lacks the typical Victorian flowery prose, as he writes with an almost analytical detachment about the horrors around him. This detachment lends an immediacy to his memoir, bringing home the brutality of the War Between the States. Dozens of Sneden's detailed drawings illustrate the text, making this a must-have for Civil War buffs. Highly recommended. --Sunny Delaney

                              Book Description

Eye of the Storm is one of the most important Civil War documents ever published. Four tattered scrapbooks found in a Connecticut bank vault in 1994 have yielded a treasure trove of more than five hundred watercolors and maps that vividly depict America's great national conflict. These scrapbooks, and the accompanying memoir, are the life's work of a long-forgotten Union private and mapmaker named Robert Knox Sneden, who witnessed some of the war's greatest campaigns and spent more than a year in Southern prison camps, including Andersonville.

A must-have for anyone interested in the subject, Robert Knox Sneden's Eye of the Storm is a permanent addition to Civil War literature and art, and a lasting achievement in human expression of the horrors of war.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just Another Civil War Journal..........2005-04-02

I hesitate to rate any book five stars, but will do so when it satisfied all my expectations and gives me far more. Pvt. Sneden's journal does exactly that.

In the context of civil war journals, in my humble opinion, it rises above many others for three reasons. First, Pvt. Sneden is simply an excellant writer. Not surprisingly, the journal is no example of modern grammatical rules, but of course, that would not be expected in this context. Still, I found Pvt. Sneden to be one of those writers with a gift for painting a picture in words. It is one of those books, unlike many historical primary sources, that you do not find yourself rereading parts to try to figure out what the writer is trying to say. Secondly, Pvt. Sneden had an extremely unusual perspective for a private soldier. He acted as a map maker and had been attached to headquarters units for most of the period covered in the book. This allowed him to comment based on many perspectives as he traveled through multiple commands in each campaign. Likewise, he gave some insight to the conduct of the general officers he worked for mapping. Thirdly, Pvt. Sneden Had a hobby of drawing pictures of almost anything he tripped over on the battlefield. The analogy I would draw would are to people these days who always have a camera and will take a picture of anything that strikes them as an interesting shot.

Besides those positive aspects of this book specific to Pvt. Sneden, there are two other aspects of this book that makes it exceptional in my opinion. First, as to primary sources, I would submit that most readers would agree that the most important factor in evaluating them is veracity. In other words, the memoirs of a politician I would guess would never be taken on face value due to the bias of the author. In this book, even describing his time as prisoner, Pvt. Sneden in a very large seemingy presents a vey balenced picture of his experiences. There might be some comments put in after the war for dramatic effect, but the editors flag them. Even flagged as possible exagerations, Pvt. Sneden established his credibility to a sufficient degree with me that I would not so easily disregard such comments.

Secondly, the editors do an excellant job providing the backdrop to Pvt. Sneden's journey through the war.

In my humble opinion, this book should recognized as excellant primary source material writing about the period. Likewise, I believe it well worth the cost of anyone with an interest in the period.

5 out of 5 stars Great Primary Source Material.......2005-01-10

The finding of primary source material is of great value in the field of history as it can give us a glimpse into the past through actual eyewitnesses. This book gives us a chance to see the American Civil War through the eyes of Robert Sneden of the 40th New York Regiment. His skills as a cartographer produced some remarkable depictions of some of the battlefields, land features and prison scenes that alone are worth studying. As the compilers of this book stated, his memoirs and drawings were quite substantial.

Sneden's observations offer us a glimpse into camp life (though he was spared most of the front line activity), some of the personalities of the war, the unfolding events of battle and perhaps most descriptive of all, life in the numerous prisons he stayed in, including those in Richmond, Salisbury (though briefly), and Andersonville. Once again it is his remarkable sketches and drawings of these places that capture our attention, though of course his written descriptions can be quite vivid and detailed, especially concerning some of the gruesome features of battle and prison life.

Sneden wasn't so much writing a history as he was detailing his day to day activities and observations during his time of service and captivity during the war. But it is these types of accounts that can offer new insights into historic events that we otherwise may never have known about and in Sneden's case especially his drawings. Of course even these types of sources need to be carefully scrutinized for factual errors as well.

5 out of 5 stars you are there.......2002-10-30

Do you ever read book and have trouble putting it down? For Civil War buffs this is it. While RK Snedon rambles on a bit at times, there can be no better insight into the maelstrom that was the Civil War. The drawings are fascinating as is the courage and positive attitude of an individual faced with obscene circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars Eye of the Storm.......2001-11-28

I always look for first hand information in journals. These are the journals by Priv. Sneden. The pictures that he drew are wonderful and his first person accounts of his journey throughout the Civil War are sad & touching. It is worth it all to read a first person account of his stay at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Both his books, "Eye of the Storm" (his journal) and "Images of the Storm" (drawings of his journey) are prized books to treasure and will be passed on through generations. What a wonderful gift Priv. Sneden left behind.
My heart aches for this wonderful young man who realized nothing
                              from his legacy.

Eye of the Storm is a rare opportunity to see a new yet original view of camp and prison life. You will find yourself drawn to Sneden's original illustrations time and time again. The more you study them the more you see. It makes you want to see more and larger versions of his drawings. Brayn and Lankford have done a good job in not tainting Sneden's work while at the same time pointing out some important historical questions. I marked over twenty parts to use in reference and speeches.

This is one fabulous book, written and illustrated by a Union soldier. A first hand account of marching with McClellen, the Battle of Bull Run, his capture by the Grey Ghost, John Mosby and subsequent incarceration in several Southern prisons, most notably Libby in Richmond and the infamous Andersonville. Taken from a diary written during the war, lost for years and discovered when it was offered to an art dealer by a decendant of Sneden's. It was purchased by the Virginia Historical Society and published into two books, this is the first, the second one having more pictures while this one has more text, the main story so to speak. If you are Civil War buff, you can't miss this, it's fantastic! Like me you'll end up buying both!
