    Book Description

Reputable offshore financial centers play a legitimate role in international finance and trade, offering huge advantages in certain situations for both corporations and individuals. Offshore Financial Services Handbook provides an informative and comprehensive survey of the legitimate uses of offshore financial services. It deals with both background and practice relating to offshore financial services, their provision and regulation, and assists prospective users by acting as a guide to the benefits and pitfalls they may encounter. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and includes a new chapter on offshore banking services. The first chapters cover offshore financial centers (OFCs) and matters of general relevance. The following chapters describe the principal services commonly available in OFCs. The last chapter looks at the future for these centers. The use of offshore financial services is not exclusive to the UK or the USA, but is global in nature. The Offshore Financial Services Handbook reflects this and will appeal to professional financial advisers, their clients, and financial services regulators.

4 out of 5 stars HPI essentials review.......2007-05-13

The text is good as an overview, and provides specifics regarding HPI, but it does not go enough in depth. It is a good resource for bullet points of things that should be done and why.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of HPI.......2005-10-24

This is a great asset to my collection of HPI books. This one gives a great overview of the process and some simple illustrations on how to implement. Very simple to read and understand. Great book to simplify the whole HPI process!

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable introduction to HPI.......2004-05-29

George Piskurich has done an excellent job of collecting some of the best names in the industry to introduce the various concepts associated with Human Performance Improvement (or Technology). As the sub-title suggests; this is a "bottom-line primer on HPI" and therefore, it focuses on real-life application. At the same time, the theoretical concepts are explained in a straight-forward manner with just the right amount of detail to guide the reader through the application bits.

At the end of each Chapter, you will find additional resources and references should you want to explore that particular topic in more detail as well as an extremely helpful "HPI Challenge" section that guides through applying and using the concepts explored in that chapter.

The Chapters closely follow the HPI model itself and are divided into:

1: What is HPI? A brief and very useful introduction to HPI and the HPI Model.
2: Business analysis - The first step in any HPI Process and vital for the final evaluation stage.
3: Performance analysis - How to link business goals to performance goals
4: Gap analysis - Evaluating the difference between the desired and actual performance levels.
5: Cause analysis - Why do performance gaps exist? This chapter emphasizes the need to address root causes and not symptoms.
6: Selecting an HPI project - Now that you understand the basics, select your first HPI project.
7: Motivational interventions. This chapter is written by Sivasailam Thiagarajan "Thiagi" and is an excellent primer on implementing solutions to address motivational issues in an organization.
8: Designing & developing structure/process interventions - Divided into organizational and systems aspects this is one of the best introductions to process interventions I've come across.
9: Knowledge interventions - This chapter has a multitude of practical guidelines and suggestions for optimizing training and focuses on the fact that training is not always the answer.
10: Stakeholder involvement - Guidelines for identifying stakeholders and ensuring their involvement and buy-in.
11: Evaluation - Using the Results-based approach of HPI, this chapter guides you through the steps needed to demonstrate the value-added to the organziation through the HPI project.
12: Performance Consultant - the job - Dana Gaines explains in a straightforward manner exactly what does an HPI Consultant do and helps the reader create a personal development plan for HPI consulting competencies.

      Book Description

Previous works on Southern African law have been directed primarily to lawyers and students of law within Southern Africa; this is the first major text on the topic written for use in common law countries. The book identifies and describes judgments in Southern Africa courts that are significant for their treatment of conflicts and tort issues and can serve as authorities or models in common law jurisdictions. The most important legislative reforms in related subjects are also described. The text provides lawyers in common law countries access to the Southern African cases and statutes most pertinent to questions of conflict of laws and torts that arise in common law jurisdiction. The judgments surveyed span the years 1947 to the present. Most are from South Africa and Zimbabwe (before and after independence), Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, and South West Africa/Namibia; the South African "national states" are also represented. Helpful English-language commentaries on cases and statutes discussed in the text are cited in the notes. Quick reference tables of cases and statutes, and indexes of principal works cited and abbrevations complete this useful guide. This invaluable sourcebook will allow lawyers and scholars in common law countries to benefit from recognition and appropriate use of Southern Africa's contributions to the common law in torts and conflict of laws.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for beginners or any Astronomy library.......2001-12-12

Phil Harrington's book is the perfect primer for those interested in astronomy or contemplating a telescope purchase. It is very easy to follow and fun to read as he de-mistifies many of the terms those who are new to astronomy might not be familiar with. The book even includes a test you can take to determine the best type of telescope to purchase, taking your budget and your viewing location into consideration. I own the 1st and 2nd editions and have loaned them both to many who have contemplated a scope purchase. This book is probably the best money I ever spent on the hobby! Thanks Phil!

5 out of 5 stars A must if you own or want to buy a telescope........2000-12-21

Philip S. Harrington's Star Ware is one of the best guides to choose, buy and use telescopes and accesories for observing the nightsky. With many charts, illustrations, tables and black and white photographs, this book is a real help in order to setup and test your astronomical equipment. In ten well written chapters, the book deals with topics such as aperture, focal lenght, focal ratio, magnification and resolving power. It also explains the different types of telescopes (reflectors, refractors, etc) comparing different brands of telescopes and eyepieces, giving useful tips on observing and astrophotography. Useful appendices, updated in this second edition, will give the reader information about telescope dealers, distributors and manufacturers, in the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. Definitively, this is one of the best books of its kind and a must for amateur astronomers who own or want to buy a telescope.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely great book.......2000-11-05

This is the only book I've ever read. I can say with ease and honesty that it is flawless. I knew next to nothing about observing with a telescope, let alone how to choose the right one for myself. The Author always starts a topic at the absolute beginning and then proceeds slowly, but steadily, untill everything is covered. It wouldn't be fair to call this an easy-to-read book, but scientific books does not get much easier to read than this. The conclusion must be, that if you are looking for a book about Amateur astronomy or simply how to choose the right telescope or equipment, than stop looking! Don't waste the time or your money on other books! This is simply all there is to say about astronomy.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2000-06-06

This is an amzing resource for all amateur astronomers. While it can get a bit overly wordy, this book helps you to understand just about any scope you can but. It also has good descriptions of ronchigram and star tests for amateur telescope makers. Highly reccomended.

5 out of 5 stars essential astro gear guide.......2000-05-18

There are a few books no amateur astronomer should be without. One is Peterson's Field Guide to the Stars and Planets, which packs more useful information into a smaller package than any other book I know of. A second is The Backyard Astronomer's Guide by Dickinson & Dyer, which covers the basics of the hobby in a more expansive, descriptive format.

A third member of this short list has recently been republished in a new edition: Star Ware, Second Edition (The Amateur Astronomer's Ultimate Guide to Choosing, Buying, and Using Telescopes and Accessories) by Philip S. Harrington, 1998 John Wiley & Sons. Star Ware is aimed mostly at beginners, teaching in a lively and informal style the basics of how telescopes work and how to use them, but there is a fair amount of information of interest to advanced amateurs as well.

The book begins with two chapters about telescope optics and different types of telescopes, with something of the history of telescopes along the way. Chapter 3 covers the pros and cons of each type in some detail, ending with a quiz where you add the point values of your answers to show what type you should buy - fun, as long as you don't take it too seriously. Chapter 4 is a still more detailed look at the offerings of different manufacturers, again sorted by type. Phil goes easy on the major manufacturers, judging from some of the tales of woe I've heard; but the treatment is fair and useful. Chapter 5 compares the myriad eyepieces available to go with these scopes. Both these chapters have appendices where the information is laid out in convenient tables.

Chapter 6 covers finders and filters, other books and software, cameras and CCD's. One thing I would have appreciated would be a similar appendix covering all the competing software packages, what they do well and which was the best for each purpose. As I wrote two months ago, I have purchased a number of these packages and started to evaluate them; maybe I need to write this comparison myself.

Chapter 7 was the most interesting to me - a description of projects you can make, from a collimation tool to a video camera bracket to a binocular chair - the latter I want to get started on Real Soon Now. `Till Death Do You Part' is on care of your scope, and repeats sage advice against unnecessary cleaning, as well as how to collimate your optics.

The last and longest chapter, `It's Time to Solo!', covers the targets to point your scope at (moon, planets, comets, sun, deep-sky), a description of a few dozen of the best deep-sky objects, and a brief introduction to astrophotography. This will be of less interest to advanced amateurs, who probably have more detailed sources of this type of information. One might question why to include this in a book about equipment, but it probably does make it more useful for the beginner who may buy only this book.

Parts of the book overlap with the Dickinson & Dyer book mentioned above, but the treatment of telescopes and eyepieces is much more detailed. Overall, a fine book, highly recommended for a beginning amateur, and recommended for an advanced amateur looking to buy a new scope or eyepiece.

First appearing about 40 million years ago in North America, rhinoceroses diversified into an incredible array of taxa, with a variety of ecologies that don't resemble any of the five living species. They ranged from delicate long-legged dog-sized forms, to huge hippo-like forms that apparently lived in rivers and lakes. Including a complete systematic review, and discussions of biogeography, evolution and paleoecology, this book summarizes our current knowledge of North American rhinos and constitutes the most complete reference available.

Political Promenade is about our cowboy bumpkin trucker's time in the office of the President of the United States. With his wee little, three-pound, three-ounce pomeranian, Spike, at his side, he faces the turmoils of the oval office. His first bout with congress leaves them spell bound. His unique way of handling the hifalootin folks of the district crowd had left them at a total loss as to how to deal with him. By using his good old cowboy candor and bullpucky he wambangles, tingtangles and bimbangles them into just the right position and then bushwhacks and jack slaps them! Somehow he manages to turn things upside down in our nation's capitol.

Escape from Sobibor, by Richard Rashke, is a profound work. It was even more disturbing and thought-provoking than my visit to the Jewish Concentration Camp in Dachau, Germany.

The book reveals a startling and detailed picture of the atrocities committed at the super-secret Sobibor Jewish Extermination Camp in Poland, where more than 250,000 Jews were tortured and murdered during World War II. Approximately 600 "fortunate" Jews were spared to maintain the camp, assist with "processing" prisoners, and perform other duties for the Nazis. Of this group, some 300 escaped one well-planned afternoon - the only successful Jewish breakout from a Nazi prisoner camp. All but about 30 were recaptured and executed.

Through intimate, sensitive interviews with survivors and meticulous research, Rashke fills the empty boots of Holocaust victims with bodies, faces, hearts, and souls. He demonstrates how spirit, strength, cooperation, and luck drove the escapees to fulfill their mission - to let the world know what was really going on behind the pristine facade so carefully cultivated by the SS at Sobibor.

Escape from Sobibor answers one question the uninformed always ask, "Why didn't the Jews resist?" Many tried, as Rashke describes so well. Inside the camp, the Jews faced overwhelming odds. They were unarmed, denied the right to assemble, and often betrayed by staff and fellow prisoners. Outside the camp, they were surrounded by mostly hostile and frightened neighbors who would not provide food, shelter, or weapons and who also frequently betrayed them.

Escape from Sobibor also compels the reader to consider other important issues about the Holocaust, including why the rest of the world chose to ignore the Jewish plight for so long and how humans can be so cruel to each other. Exploration of these topics is still significant since racial and ethnic discrimination and abuse persists around the world.

It is clear from the haunting accounts chronicled by Rashke that no one really "escaped" from Sobibor, even if they are still alive today. Now I will never really "escape" Sobibor either.

3 out of 5 stars Amazing Personal Stories.......2005-07-16

This book is one of the best books depicting the horror and determination of the Jewish people and supporters. It incites hatred and disgust on a whole new levels for the Nazi's and their followers, and also brings a real like look at the Jews in the camp; playing chess, falling in love and escaping with extreme courage.

The book, however, is at times a little confusing with time periods and events, rather than staying in chronological order I wish the auther would have stuck with characters instead. I would read about someone in Chapter 1, then in Chapter 10 and have to go back and reread saying "Oh ok him." I would also have to reread certain sections because it was with history, personal, political agendas mixed in. I understand the author's wish for extreme detail and the many characters necessity but the flow of the book would throw me off time to time.

Over all a good read and an even greater story of heroism.

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ ALONG WITH MOVIE.......2004-09-30

The writer captures the horror behind the horror! By placing background interviews of survivors both before and after he covers the escape itself, Mr. Rashke adds a personal touch to the horrors that the Jewish people of Europe went through, especially those from Poland. He truthfully depicts the Anti-Semitism of the Poles then and, unfortunatly NOW! If you buy the DVD, I highly reccomend you bu this book, also. The only negative, and it's a minor one, is that the maps and drawings could be clearer.

5 out of 5 stars As gripping as any novel, but unfortunately it isnýt fiction.......2004-07-17

This book represents a painful retelling of life and death in a World War II Nazi death camp where some 250,000 Jews were taken. Nearly all of them were quickly exterminated, but a sliver of a percent escaped, and from them we learn about Sobibor. We learn how thousands of lives were snuffed out daily and how thousands of bodies were disposed of daily. We learn how the "lucky" ones, chosen to work at the camp, dealt with gruesome events associated with the daily march toward annihilation of their race.

After reading this book, I have a much deeper understanding not only of what Jews have been through, but how this leads many of them to think. I noticed that Rashke helped me understand the Jewish mindset, but not the Nazi mindset. I suppose Rashke didn't take this one on because there really is no defensible logic for Nazi behavior. What in the world led so many Nazis to conclude that Jews deserved no dignity or treatment as humans? What could I possibly learn from someone who could "pick up a baby by the feet, smash its head against a boxcar, and then toss it into the miners' train like a dead rat" (p. 92 in the paperback).

The book ends with about 75 pages that explain how Rashke found and interviewed the people whose stories are told in "Escape from Sobibor." It's a useful format to place this at the end of the book, since by now I'm involved in their lives and want to know what happened after the war ended. This section reveals that the survivors are never really free of Sobibor. There are daily reminders and frequent nightmares. But I'm thankful that they were willing to open the wounds and bleed again. Stories like this, despite the injustice and atrocity and inhumanity they expose, should never be buried.

5 out of 5 stars personal bond between the reader and human lives involved.......2002-11-01

I am so glad the people whose lives are told about in this book were willing to share there personal histories with us the reader. I am also greatful for Richard Rashke for the time and energy spent researching this book to bring it to life. The people in this book will touch your heart and you will find yourself thinking of them as people you know and care for and cry for and pray for even still. Even though many books have been written of holocaust survivors, every one deserves to be read,no matter. They speak out for the living as well as the dead. We must never forget, and we must read books such as this one to keep them alive in our memories.

                      Book Description

Rural Revolt in Mexico is a historical investigation of how subaltern political activity engages imperialism, capitalism, and the United States. In this volume, Daniel Nugent has gathered a group of leading scholars whose work examines the relationship of revolts by peasants and Indians in Mexico to the past century of U.S. intervention—from the rural rebellions of the 1840s through the 1910 revolution to the 1994 uprising in Chiapas.
Through their studies of social movements and popular mobilization in the Mexican countryside, the contributors argue for understanding rural revolts in terms of the specific historical contexts of particular regions and peoples, as well as the broader context of unequal cultural, political, and economic relations between Mexico and the United States. Exploring the connections between external and internal factors in social movements, these essays reveal the wide range of organized efforts through which peasants and Indians have struggled to shape their own destiny while confronted by the influence of U.S. capital and military might. Originally published as a limited edition in 1988 by the Center for U. S.–Mexican Studies, this volume presents a pioneering effort by Latin Americanist scholars to sympathetically embrace and enrich work begun in Subaltern Studies between 1982 and 1987 by projecting it onto a different region of historical experience. This revised and expanded edition includes a new introduction by Daniel Nugent and an extensive essay by Adolfo Gilly on the recent Chiapas uprising.

5 out of 5 stars a book that sees the Revolution from a new angle.......2001-12-16

This book is a collection of essays written in the mid-1980's by a group of dedicated scholars who spend countless hours interviewing participants in the Mexican Revolution and reviewing archives. It focuses on the Revolution from a grassroots basis, and I think that the work of some of these authors has been responsible for the shift of emphasis from a national sort of scenario to the that which is based on the concept of the "patria chica", which was the actual operating model in the perceptions of the majority of participants.

Among the giants of Revolution scholarship who participated in the development of this book is Friedrich Katz, whose mammoth work, The Life and Times of Pancho Villa is, for all effects and purposes, the definitive work on the subject, EXCEPT that within THIS work, one can see right away that his very contemporaries who were working almost side by side with him at the time of his own research reached some different conclusions and covered some very important material that he both overlooked and failed to see the importance of. This statement particularly applies to the essay by Maria Teresa Koreck, "Space and Revolution in Northeastern Chihuahua", which defines the concept of the "patria chica" and very conclusively proves, in my opinion, that this was the motivating force in the revolutionary soldiers and cadres themselves. One can see from this essay that the troops of Villa, who were descended from Apache fighters and a generation before the arrival of the militarized colonists in the mid-19th century, from a rather `indianized' population, saw him as something like a great Indian war chief - sort of a Geronimo for the "patria chica".

Another essay that very much caught my attention was that of Ruben Osorio, entitled "Villismo: Nationalism and Popular Mobilization in Northern Mexico", which I think influenced Katz quite a bit, as Osorio and Katz collaborated a lot. In this essay, the roots of the Revolution in Mexico are made quite clear, and the long buildup of hostilities between the militarized villagers who had fought the Apache wars and the oligarchic families such as the Terrazas are made clear, with a number of regional conflicts that predated the Revolution brought into focus. Osorio states that, for all effects and purposes, the Revolution began with the rebellion in Tomochic, and it didn't end until the surrender of Villa in 1920. It was, then, a series of regional and sometimes isolated conflicts lasting some 30 years, with the common thread being the defense of the `patria chica' from the encroachment of hacendados and latifundistas.

Organizers like Flores Magon and Madero entered almost as interlopers in conflicts that had been ongoing, and were not about to subside with their exit from the scene. Leaders like Villa really didn't need any ideology to lead these fighters. It was enough that they were seen as the natural leaders for tribal societies.

Another important aspect that one sees, particularly in the essay of Koreck, was the importance of the Ojinaga region, where cattle were sold in Presidio, Texas and arms were purchased from the German Jewish merchant John Klienmann (mentioned in John Reed's "Insurgent Mexico") in defiance of the frequent embargoes against Villa that were set in place by the US government. On a day to day basis, this type of activity is what actually kept alive the movements of Madero and later Villa, and it would behoove historians to amplify studies along these lines. This whole setup was organized before the first shots were fired in 1910 by Madero, Abram Gonzales, Toribio Ortega, and even Villa himself: these gentlemen concluded some business arrangements with the local ranchers, most likely under aegis of the bank, for the financing of the Revolution, there on US soil in Presidio, Marfa, and Shafter. Ortega probably made most of the arrangements, as far as the finer details, while the revolutionary organizers in Ojinaga, the Sanchez family, Jose de la Cruz Sanchez and Idelfonso Sanchez, carried out the ongoing business at later dates thoughout the course of the conflict, selling cattle in Presidio and paying Kleinmann for mountains of 30-30 and Mauser ammunition that was passed into Ojinaga with the complicity of US customs officials.

What I see as a real shame is that Koreck, who was probably the most astute scholar of Villa ever, has not published more material. Supposedly she has a huge collection of archives in Argentina that she gathered over the course of years of dedicated study, but she is yet to publish a major volume. If she did, people would soon forget about Katz, who spent 30 years himself collecting and organizing material, but then published a work full of inaccuracies and misconceptions derived from, apparently, his haste to assemble the volume.

4 out of 5 stars Essays bring peasants to the forefront.......1999-07-29

This collection enriches a growing body of scholarship that focuses on the roles played (or sometimes not played) by subaltern peoples (i.e. peasants, workers...)in the making of modern Latin America. Focusing on Mexico, this volume contains spirited debates on peasant nationalism and, as its title suggests, on the conspicuous and inconspicuous power of US capital and policy during the Porfiriato (1876-1911)and the opening scenes of the Revolution (1911-?). Its main problem lies not in content or structure, but in delivery. Needless jargon permeates this volume, and, unfortunately, shuts out a great many readers.
