Well Rounded Overview.......2006-08-05

I saw this book while browsing at Borders. I've been finding that I need more reference material in my home library, especially with a renewed interest in Anstronomy and a sudden curiousity with Physics. I find the book as much entertaining as it is informative. And, its become a real pleasure to sit down with it for 30 minutes at a time and read about the human as well as the mechanical aspects of these two fascinating subjects.

Stars in my eyes.......2006-04-03

'The Oxford Guide to the History of Physics and Astronomy', edited by John Heilbron, is a wonderful reference resource, but also an interesting book to read. It is organised as an encyclopedic dictionary, with over 200 entries that range in size from half a page to several pages in length. This covers history from the a little past the Renaissance to the present (with occasional references to earlier discoveries and events), including entries in other sciences such as geography and oceanography and how they relate to the issues in physics and astronomy.

Entries include topics, biographies, short essays, inventions and concepts. The biographical entries are generally paired - figures such as Einstein and Newton warrant their own entries (as does Benjamin Franklin for some inexplicable reason), but sometimes the pairings don't quite seem to fit (Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking, for example, are both popularisers of physics and astronomy, but perhaps deserve somewhat better pairings). For the concept of the pairings, inspiration seems drawn from Plutarch, whose magnum opus 'Lives' paired biographies of notable figures.

The overall organisation is alphabetical, but there is also a complex hierarchy of entries as well that includes primary articles for comprehensive disciplines, principle subdivisions within the disciplines, and third level entries on specific items within the subdivisions (including biographies). There are extensive cross-references as well, in addition to supplemental reading lists.

In some ways, this book is a subset of the greater work, 'The Oxford Companion to the History of Modern Science' - there is a complete listing of entries for that work included in this text, to show how this area of science fits within the greater whole (for one thing).

One thing I found about this book, however, is that it is a compelling read. When I first received the book, I stopped to look up a few items, and found myself still reading through articles and following the cross-references more than an hour later. Despite being a reference book, it is an accessible and inviting text to for the reader, which is the mark of a good history text. For anyone interested in physics, astronomy, or the history of science, this is a text to be prized.

A Great Choice for Weather Fanatics in Your Family.......2007-01-16

This is a tried and true classic gift for my husband and his father (and my brother too) every year. For those who love weather and love to keep up with their weather, this is a great gift! The 5-year calendar is too!

Farmers Almanac where is it?.......2007-01-10

I always buy my husband the annual Farmers Almanac book but recently like last 3 yrs realized I read it more than him and only for certain parts which I assumed (WRONG) that the calendar would have those parts in it, such as astrology info such as when Mercury goes into retrograde, it does say when the full moon is and names each one (?) but no other helpful info was in this calendar and it was tiny!!!!! I had to change the entire area around where my normal calendars go which are larger and takes at least 2 nails or tacks to hold them up. Never will buy again. Will go read and write the info down at a bookstore and buy the Weather Channels weather calendar next year like I did in 2006.

Good Photos.......2007-01-04

I got this for my Grandmother for Christmas. She liked it and once I got a chance to see all the photos for each month I liked it too.

If they could drop the price by about 50 to 75 cents it would make it great competition for the other calendars posted here.

A real Marine leader's personal perspective.......2006-07-23

This was an enjoyable read: well written, balanced, not self-serving. 2d Lt. Brown puts the reader in his mind when, as a shavetail artillery officer, he is sent to the DMZ where he earns his salt on the Rock Pile, Dong Ha and Con Thein. In addition to sharing the emotional experience on surviving the DMZ in that killing period, you get his insights as a leader as he discusses his strategic and tactical thinking in making do with less while trying to keep his men alive. He also shares the process of becoming disillusioned with the wisdom of the war and the failure of our government's political leadership. But his loyalty to his men and to the values of the Corps seem to remain strong. Too bad he left the Corps. He was the kind of leader that's always needed.

13 Months Just Below the DMZ........2004-11-06

Jim Brown served thirteen months in a Marine Corp artillery unit just south of the DMZ. He fought in some infamous places such as Khe Sanh and Con Thien, infamous enough that each of them have books of their own dedicated to just that battle. Jim Brown walked the walk, not just talked about it.

At the sharp end of the stick, Mr. Brown talks about the impact at the front line of decisions being made back up the chain of command. In one story, B-52's come to their support and effectively stop the enemy activity. In a few weeks the NVA are back at it, shooting at them with mortars, artillery, even infantry attacks. Another set of B-52 attacks was requested. No, they were told that would be to admit that these fortresses were under seige. Did these guys never hear of George Patton's remark at the end of World War II, "Fixed fortifications are monuments to the stupidity of man."

This book cannot be recommended too highly.

JEWISH AMERICANS is a big fat wonderful book filled with hundreds of photographs of native and foreign-born Jewish Americans. The book is coffee-table sized so if you want to start a conversation this is the book that will do it. You'll need an ovesized book shelf to store it.

Although most American Jews were born in the U.S., many were immigrants. Jews began settling in the U.S. when it was a collection of colonies over 300 years ago, and were participants in the American Revolution, the western expansion and all the other historical events which define who is American.

Some Jews came to the U.S. when Spain expelled the Jews from it's territories (convert, leave, or die). Some came to the U.S. from Europe following pogroms and other cruel efforts designed to eradicate Jews and Jewish life. Many came to the U.S. during and after WWII. Today, many Jews have fled areas where Muslim extremists make life difficult for all non-believers.

Jews can be of any race and are both Hispanic and not. Jews have come from Africa, Europe, Asia, and all points on the globe. As the historian Simon Schama says, 'Jews don't have roots, they have feet.' Records of the Jewish diaspora can be found in the Christian Bible, Jewish holy books, and Latin and other sources. In the 1st Century C.E. the Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem, but even that awful event has not prevented return migration to the homeland.

Jews in the U.S. (Freud went to London when he fled Vienna) have ranged from Louis Brandeis and Ruth Bader Ginsberg of the Supreme Court, Alan Greenspan of the Federal Reserve, Albert Einstein the physicist, and Drs. Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin who found a way to beat polio. Without Jewish performers, the U.S. would have been a sad place during the 20th Century. These entertainers have included Irving Berlin who wrote 'White Christmas', George M. Cohen who wrote 'Yankee Doodle Dandy', George Gershwin who wrote 'An American in Paris', Oscar Hammerstein who wrote the lyrics to "South Pacific" and "Okalahoma", Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Isaac Stern, and Sandy Koufax the baseball player. Mathew Broderick, Mel Brooks, Barbara Streisand and many song and dance people are Jewish. The list of commedians, including Milton Berle, Steve Allen and Rose Ann, producers, directors, and folks working in theatre and films is astonishing.
