Book Description
A practical guide to coping at work
Making Work Work for the Highly Sensitive Person builds on Elaine Aron's groundbreaking bestseller The Highly Sensitive Person.
This new book, which includes a Foreword by Aron, gives highly sensitive persons (HSPs) strategies to build confidence, combat stress, and find work that is emotionally, financially, and creatively rewarding.
Based on cutting-edge medical and scientific research, this fresh perspective on how readers can secure satisfying careers includes strategies to:
- Detect jobs that are not right for HSPs
- Make their opinions heard and valued
- Control good personal internal boundaries
- Defend themselves from bullies in the workplace
- Move out of a job that feels like drudgery, and into a job that supports career goals and dreams
Customer Reviews:
My context on this book:.......2005-05-28
I'd like to add a bit of context to the reviews of this book.
This book will not "get" you into a great job; that's magical thinking. Nor will it "offer personalised steps", which is personalising what is, frankly, an impersonal workplace mainly located at the level of Craft.
Now, to what this book DOES do: it proposes three containers for working energies: Drudgery, Craft, and Calling. These are powerful insights into the modes of nature; for me they reflect the deep dynamic qualities of nature (in Indian Ayurveda they are called Tamas, Rajas, and Sattva). But she goes a step further by unfolding the essence of these work energies as not something you do or say or work as, but as something you ARE.
So the shift she is teaching about is inner, through reflection. There are no practical steps except the willingness to be open and ready to grow within, and to admit to being where you are at present.
For instance, a highly sensitive soul who is stuck in the Island of Drudgery is first and foremost stuck in desires and fears that reflect Drudgery. Introspection, inspiration, and surrendering one's preconcieved perceptions seem to be the way out. There are no steps.
Calling and Craft are presented for me in a powerful, moving and inspirational way. I really recommend this book for its liberating conversation on the truth of Calling, the prevailing wind of inspiration in human history.
However, when it comes to Craft, I would have preferred to have more examples of both and images of both. I didn't get the sense of closure that comes from complete comprehension from multiple examples.
I liked the heightened emotive diction of the interviews with highly sensitive souls, especially Tom the economics professor who spoke about the role of spiritual values in Calling. They encouraged thoughtful moral reflection on how one uses life energy and fulfillment. But without a questioning heart in the reader, I doubt they would strike a chord frankly!
This book should be taken as a challenge to one's preconceptions about stress and sensitivity. Within the context of being a HSP it is an important, inspirational, and subtle contribution. I would enjoy seeing a Workbook, perhaps developed from actual field work, using this material.
Decent discussion of HSP, but not for all HSPs.......2005-02-21
I actually am impressed with Barrie's book. For those obsessed with the MBTI she looks like an INFJ to me (and it comes across in her writing as well). The book is very reassuring for highly sensitive people. The reason the book earns four stars and not five is because Barrie essentially wrote it for herself and highly sensitive people (hereafter HSP) like her, which I think is a fair criticism. I like the book and might give it four and a half stars, but it deserves four stars rather than five.
Barrie really hits the mark with the way the book is organized. I like the way she divides work for HSPs into three categories: drudgery, craft, and calling. She also reveals the problems that most HSPs face in life and the workplace and gives helpful advice for dealing with stress, being visible in the workplace, and finding a way to make a contribution to the world via fulfilling work. It's definitely idealistic (again, see Keirsey et al), which is fine with me. If all the book gives is hope it's a lot more than many people started with.
Whether all HSPs can effectively use the book is another matter. I was unenthused about Barrie's model of drudgery/craft/calling (she uses a container with the three levels aforementioned and "balls" representing people, job tasks, and work conditions). The issue is not whether the model effectively represents reality - it does. The reader may or may not be able to effectively translate it to their own reality to improve his or her situation. At least it can be used to help identify bad working conditions or bad situations at work. I also found many other ideas in the book to be quite useful in theory but perhaps difficult to translate into reality effectively. Then again, it's not Barrie's responsibility to do so, it's the reader's. You may also find some of the ideas and suggestions more relevant than I did (which again alludes to the fact that I think Barrie wrote it for a segment of the HSP population).
All in all, the book is worthwhile since Barrie is able to effectively communicate problems and innate conditions that prevent some HSPs from enjoying life fully. Her personal, thoughtful approach and keen insights make the book a worthwhile read. econ
Affirming but does not work.......2004-11-16
I so looked forward to getting this book - it's title set an expectation that it may reveal some action(s) to be taken on the path to career fulfillment. It was scattered and a bit shallow, leaving it hard to believe the author "owned" the knowledge claiming to be shared. There were quite a few affirming lines, little new information about being highly sensitive, and no solutions to follow up the conclusions drawn. I found the writing ruminating at times and missing the self discipline and focus that is touted as necessary to make work work. I'm sorely disappointed and would not recommend it to anyone who's in a poor work state or in transition - this book simply observes what it is like to be there and doesn't offer much to help you out.
Another naive book kills the hopes of work abused..........2004-08-20
I'm an HSP who can [at least currently] not work due to having been a former physical/psychological torture victim at my work-setting at the hands of a boss [for about 2 yrs; almost being killed, even] who finally was arrested & who is now certifiably labeled an "anti-social personality."
As a result of of the torture I endured, I'm physically [in a wheelchair & have an implanted morphine pump] and emotionally severe PTSD] disabled [8 years now].
I read through this book, hoping to find a glimmer of hope for someone in my situation to be able to work, again.
I found nothing encouraging. [I agree with "Karen's review" from June 29, 2004]. Sure it would be great if we could all work together or magically switch to those almost non-existent positive for the worker companies. They don't even exist, except of course if you work for yourself--usually in a job involved in creativity.
The book suddenly started to remind me of the extreme naiivete of an author I used to know--Chauncey Hare. Hare, the self-proclaimed expert on and champion of the work abuse victim & co-author of "Work Abuse: How to Recognize and Survive It."
Then, I realized that when author Barrie S. Jaeger quoted Hare and his wife Judy Wyatt as the essentially the first pioneers in work abuse knowledge & expertise, I wondered if this book wasn't spawned by either reading Hare's book "Work Abuse: How to Recognize it..." or if Jaeger knew or perhaps interviewed Hare & Wyatt--the dynamic duo of alleged work abuse heros.
Ironically, a quote on "Making Work Work...", pp. 83-4 mentions how Hare [& Wyatt] consider "abusive bullying and 'mobbing'" -- H&W's definition of "work abuse -- that such changes can basically change a good/"effective" worker into a "difficult" person [worker] -- the end results of what is work abuse.
As for the only essential solution being: getting a job as a self-employed worker; this is not a viable solution to most. Sure, if you are allegedly creative and maybe can write--that might be an option.
[Note: As an aside, in an interview-story I did with Hare that had appeared on Tim Field's "bully on site [of the UK] pages," [my story "ironically" was "killed" after Hare & I had a falling out]. In short, one of my piece's themes dealt with how Hare claimed he was disablingly work abused. Thus he, also, became self-employed as a therapist/author for the work abused. The problem is, though, in our communications Hare revealed to me some discouraging deliberately published falsehoods in his own work-abuse book a case study altered so "readers would believe it."
My point is: After reading through Jaeger's book I couldn't trust the book's info at all, since it quoted as a source a propagator of lies.
Finally Validated.......2004-08-13
I've struggled in the workplace for years. I've intuitively taken steps to keep myself from becoming overwhelmed by work. I figured that I was a slacker but after reading this book I realized that these steps helped to shield me from a world that was sometimes overwhelming and seemed morally wrong to me. I had numerous ah-ha moments while reading this book. I'm not so strange after all. Suddenly I have been given coping skills for dealing with the overwhelming stimulation I sometimes receive from the workplace.

Book Description
Mars is the Solar System's other wild, wet, water world. Long believed to have become cold, dead, and dry aeons ago, we now having striking new proof, not only that Mars was a relatively warm and wet place in geologically recent times, but that even today there are vast reserves of water frozen beneath the planet's surface. This compelling new evidence may well boost the chances of a manned mission to Mars sooner, rather than later. The discovery is also forcing a complete rethink about the mechanisms of global planetary change. What does the drastic turn of events on Mars mean for Earth's climate system? Could life have thrived on Mars very recently, and might it survive today in short-term hibernation? Will humans soon be capable of living off the natural resources that Martian hydrogeology has naturally offered us? Will humans one day be capable of setting off the same chain of events that nature has repeatedly triggered to set off warm, wet episodes on Mars? How could Mars be terraformed into a New World? (And should we even contemplate doing so?) This book offers a visually beautiful, scientifically detailed and accurate presentation of the evidence that has forced this new revolution in Mars science.
From the reviews:
"Long believed to have been cold, dead and dry for eons, there is now striking new proof that not only was Mars a relatively warm and wet place in geologically recent times, but that even today there are vast reserves of water frozen beneath the planet’s surface. In this absorbing, beautifully illustrated book, Kargel describes the still-unfolding revolution in our knowledge about the Red Planet and how future concepts of Mars will continue to be molded by new revelations of four billion years of geology". (LUNAR AND PLANETARY INFORMATION BULLETIN)
From the reviews:
"
This exhaustive, effusive, and enthusiastic book conveys the excitement of frontline scientific research about as well as can be done. Kargel describes himself as a member of the "Tucson Mafia," a group of scientists in full rebellion against the "Mars Establishment" and its belief in a cold, dry Mars. His ideas are presented in meticulous detail, supported by hundreds of superb pictures, many taken by the author himself. Some--perhaps most--of his ideas are controversial and may ultimately prove to be wrong, as he himself often points out, but we have to applaud the (sometimes career-risking) courage with which he has pursued them. In spite of the large amount of rather technical information, the reader is swept along by the author's enthusiasm in conveying it and ability to integrate it into a coherent vision. The reader also learns about the process of science: the thrill of having a new idea and discussing it with others at conferences and cafes (and bars), the drudgery often involved in pursuing the idea, the perils of the formal review process for publications and grant applications, and the roles played by personality conflicts and power politics. Summing Up: Enthusiastically recommended. All levels. " (T. Barker, CHOICE, March 2005)

Mars - A Warmer, Wetter Planet.......2007-01-13
This book is one heavy read, both literally and figuratively! It's heavy! The book weighs a lot and your hands and arms get tired holding it up. It's printed on fine heavy paper with top quality pictures and it is very technical in many areas, complete with formulas and mathematical equations. While many times I found myself struggling to comprehend what I was reading; reading it over and over, and sometimes throwing in the towel and skipping over what I couldn't understand, for the most part it was a very enjoyable read.
The author presents a convincing case for current subsurface reservoirs of water on Mars as well as evidence of erosion caused by glaciers and subsurface permafrost. He compares earth topography with similar features on earth and makes correlations between earth and Mars relative to the causes.
The book is fresh view of Mars, its history, and current environment, that differs from the orthodox view and presents theories not well publicized. It is a great and engaging read for the technically minded reader.

Book Description
Established by Congress in 1901, the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), now the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has a long and distinguished history as the custodian and disseminator of the United States' standards of physical measurement. Having reached its centennial anniversary, the NBS/NIST reflects on and celebrates its first century with this book describing some of its seminal contributions to science and technology. Within these pages are 102 vignettes that describe some of the Institute's classic publications. Each vignette relates the context in which the publication appeared, its impact on science, technology, and the general public, and brief details about the lives and work of the authors. The groundbreaking works depicted include:· A breakthrough paper on laser-cooling of atoms below the Doppler limit, which led to the award of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Physics to William D. Phillips· The official report on the development of the radio proximity fuse, one of the most important new weapons of World War II· The 1932 paper reporting the discovery of deuterium in experiments that led to Harold Urey's1934 Nobel Prize for Chemistry· A review of the development of the SEAC, the first digital computer to employ stored programs and the first to process images in digital form· The first paper demonstrating that parity is not conserved in nuclear physics, a result that shattered a fundamental concept of theoretical physics and led to a Nobel Prize for T. D. Lee and C. Y. Yang · "Observation of Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Dilute Atomic Vapor," a 1995 paper that has already opened vast new areas of research · A landmark contribution to the field of protein crystallography by Wlodawer and coworkers on the use of joint x-ray and neutron diffraction to determine the structure of proteins

Book Description
Plant Evolution in the Mediterranean integrates a diverse and scattered literature to produce a synthetic account of plant evolutionary ecology. The central theme is differentiation, both among and within species in the contemporary flora of the Mediterranean basin. This approach is developed by attempting to link population processes to species evolution, and by examining the variation and evolution of ecological function in the context of spatial habitat variation and regional history. The Mediterranean is a region with a complex geological and climatic history and a highly heterogeneous landscape in which human activities have greatly modified local conditions and the spatial configuration of habitats. This book explores the evolutionary processes which have shaped plant evolution in the context of these major influences on vegetation. The book is structured around two central topics in evolutionary ecology: diversity and adaptation. The Mediterranean region is a hotspot of plant biodiversity, a key ingredient of which is its richness in endemic species. A primary question motivating the first section of this book concerns the role of historical factors and spatial environmental variation in the evolution of such endemism. The Mediterranean landscape is also characterised by dramatic variations in ecological conditions, often over short distances. A second focus is on the ecological and historical factors which mediate dispersal, reproduction, and adaptive trait variation in the Mediterranean mosaic. This accessible text is aimed at students and researchers in plant evolutionary biology, ecology, biogeography, population biology, and systematics. It will also be of interest to plant scientists and botanical societies worldwide.

Book Description
Hadrian’s Wall is the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. It is the best known frontier in the entire Roman Empire and stands as a reminder of the past glories of one of the world's greatest civilisations. Its origins lie in a visit by the Emperor Hadrian to Britain in AD 122 when he ordered the wall to be built to mark the northern boundary of his Empire and 'to separate the Romans from the Barbarians'. This title details the design, development and construction of the wall and covers the everyday lives of those who manned it as well as the assaults it withstood.
Customer Reviews:
All you need to cover most questions.......2006-11-10
A good entry level book that will cover most questions you need to cover without the need to buy a much more expensive and more complicated work.
The diagrams are plentiful detailed and interesting, and are supported by good writing and photo's. Detailed sources enable to connect to other works if it is more intense detail you need. I also found the brief Latin Dictionary totally fasinating.
I'd have to disagree.......2004-10-09
I am afraid I am going to have to disagree with the previous reviews of this book. Knowing a little about Osprey publishing and the way the set their guidlines for authors, I feel the brevity was in no way Dr. Fields fault. This conclusion was drawn particularly from the fact that Osprey required a certain word limit which was met in this 64 page volume.
That said I also have to disagree with the previous entries concerning the doctrinal importance and context of Hadrian's Wall. Indeed I feel Dr. Fields is correct in his assertion that Hadrian's wall was not a defensive point, but a staging point for operations further afield and a watch station to better react to problems before they got to the wall. As Webster in his 1998 republication of The Roman Imperial Army noted that the purpose of the wall was to "impose total control over all traffic passing in and out of the Province, with provision for the collection of fees, tolls and duties and a thorough inspection of goods and persons. Its military purpose is less clear, but it certainly could never have been used as a fighting platform, only as a patrol track. An efficient signalling system and alert surveillance by forwads units would have made it possible for command HQ to order units to move forward through the fort and milecastle gateways to any area to deal with hostile elements." This passage sums up Hadrian's Wall to 'T'. The actual garrison at any given locality on Hadrian's wall couldn't have held it for any length of time against a determined enemy. In addition to this fact it is worth noting that the emperor to succeed Hadrian, Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161), in short order moved the frontier to the lowlands of Scotland where he did in fact build earthen fortifications. So in conclusion I would argue that this book is well worth a read for those who want a simplified glance at the defensive work that still provides a decent synopsis and sufficient depth. This combined with a thorough biliography should mean that this is an excellent staging point for anyone insterested in doing further research on the Wall, its functions and significance.
64 Pages?.......2003-05-04
Trying to cover the history, construction, use, and importance of Hadrian's Wall in 64 pages is impossible. It was a good effort, but Nic Fields just wasn't able to do it. I like this Fortress series from Osprey, and I like the brevity of these books, but Hadrian's Wall was a little too brief. One area Fields could have covered at least a little bit was that of the Emperor Hadrian himself and the reasons why he built this wall in the first place. Even though Fields doesn't believe the Roman army was a defensive one; Hadrian tried very had to outline the empire and create "defensive" lines like that of the wall. The previous review pretty much covered everything about this book. However, I will add that the illustrations and photos are wonderful and you will enjoy them. This is the first book I've read where I've wanted to purchase the original artwork. The nice thing is I will be able to buy them because Osprey has made available the email address and website of the company that produced the artwork. This book is very easy to read and the illustrations make this book even shorter than 64 pages. I finished reading this book recently on a flight from Frankfurt to Philadelphia. It was the only book I brought with me and I messed up because on an eight-hour flight I was left with nothing to read after three hours. Osprey books are suppose to be good introductions to topics, but this one doesn't quite cut it and I would suggest a different book on the subject or maybe even a good biography on Hadrian like Hadrian: The Restless Emperor by Anthony Birley. Birley covers Hadrian's Wall and his journey to Britain in great detail.

Hadrian's Wall AD 122 - 410 is the second in Osprey's new Fortress series that aims to summarize the "design, technology and history of key fortresses, strategic positions and defensive systems." This new series should serve to fill in many of the gaps of traditional military history, by providing greater detail on the fortresses that have shaped warfare throughout the centuries. Having spent a day exploring Hadrian's Wall several years ago, I felt that few could fail to be impressed by this unique remnant of Roman military engineering. Unfortunately, I wish I could say that same about Osprey's Fortress #2, but I cannot. Dr. Nic Fields, a professor in Ancient History at the University of Edinburgh, knows his material but writes in the typical horrid British academic style that reduces all the essential elements of this topic to a opaque mush. Like many academics who write about ancient military history, Fields is too-often sidetracked by esoteric archaeological issues and cannot focus on the actual military aspects of his subject. Furthermore, Fields has borrowed liberally from D.J. Breeze's earlier works on Hadrian's Wall and readers would be advised to check out that author's work in preference to this volume.
Hadrian's Wall AD 122 - 410 begins with a description of the various types of Roman fortifications, the origins of the wall and a very brief chronology. The heart of the book lies in the chapters discussing the anatomy of the wall, the wall's construction, the function of the wall, it's garrison and life on the wall. The author includes three low-quality 2-D maps, all of which are inferior to those in the Visitor's Guide one can purchase on the modern site of the wall. There are also seven color art scenes that are decent: a milecastle, a turret, the cavalry fort at Chesters, early development of the wall, the fort at Birdoswald, a night raid on the wall and a Roman punitive raid against the Caledonians. One of the best aspects of the volume is a detailed chart that depicts the various Roman garrisons at all the major locations of the Wall in the 2nd and 3rd Centuries. Unfortunately, since the author makes little effort to discuss Roman military organization, it is difficult to determine how many troops (at least the nominal strength) might have been along the wall in these periods.
The fundamental problem with this volume is that the author views the Wall in terms of its material - brick, stone and mortar - instead of how it fit doctrinally into Rome's military strategy. With precious little insight, the author advances the theory that the wall was primarily designed as an observation platform rather than a fighting position, since the walls were too narrow. Further, Dr Fields argues that since the Roman Army was an "offensive army," it did not defend static positions. This is nonsense. Anyone who has seen Hadrian's Wall and has knowledge of basic defensive tactics will see that the Roman units chose terrain that was very advantageous for defense. If the wall was merely intended for observation as the author contends, why not build simple earth ramparts with watchtowers, like the Limes in Germany?
The author also contends that the defenses of Hadrian's Wall were not particularly impressive but this is also rubbish, since the various tribes in the north of Scotland lacked any tools for siege warfare. A 21-foot high stonewall with a garrison atop it would have been a very serious obstacle to lightly armed and poorly-organized tribesmen. The fact that the tribesmen did breach a section of the wall in 181 AD is far more indicative of a temporary lapse in Roman discipline and order than a fundamental defect in Hadrian's Wall. The Roman's built Hadrian's Wall - an enormous effort and expense - in order to achieve economy of force in what was essentially a secondary theater. By building the wall, the Romans could garrison the northern frontier of Britannia with modest auxiliary forces, allowing some of the regular legions to be transferred to more critical theaters like Germany and the Danube. Even the regular Roman units that remained in England could be utilized to secure the major population centers, rather than wasting away on a thinly populated frontier. At the cost of a five-year engineering effort, the Romans secured their northern frontier in Britannia for nearly three centuries - a bargain.
Hadrian's Wall is worthy of study as a very cost-effective effort that achieved the maximum efficiency for Roman Britain at the lowest cost. The construction of the wall was truly amazing and Dr Fields failed to emphasize that the wall was built by infantryman, not trained engineers (although there were technical advisors). When one visits the wall today, the visitor can see unit insignias such as bulls or lions engraved on the century markers, denoting which infantry company (centuria) built that section of the wall. The pride in their achievement, as well as its longevity, are evident for all to see - except in this book.
