Excellent Update to a Classic.......2004-03-08

By reading the previous reviews - I assume they are discussing previous Volumes of this excellent new resource.
This is a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the some of the most complex issues facing professionals in both the
traditional and hedge fund management industries.
Of particular note are the chapters on the CDS Basis - this is the first 'complete' discussion of the reasons and practical issues related to trading CDS and also the chapter on Valuation of CDS adds some new analytics to a practitioner's toolbox.
As bond markets become more transparent and derivative-based - this book provides the details for less quantitative shops to keep up with the market.

Useful and worth owning.......2001-12-07

I own both volumes of Prof Prosp on FIPM and plan to buy the third one as well as soon as it becomes available. With as many books that Fabozzi edits, I don't expect him to do a foreword--his job is to pull together the experts and I think he's done that well. I think the book does a good job of hitting the key issues, and offering a comprehensive overview. It's worth having on the shelf, especially in conjunction with the next volume.

Disappointing.......2001-05-06

Fabozzi was the "editor" of this volume but he offered no comment or introduction. Some of the articles appeared to have been hastily written. The articles in the book are so brief and inadequate, and yet the book contains no suggested further readings or bibliography. Given the book's disappointing quality and brevity (262 pages), I strongly object to its price of 75 US dollars. I have seen better books with Fabozzi's name on them.

Two Thumbs up for this great teaching tool!.......2000-05-03

I manage an office of 70 lawyers that needed team building skills, but have a deep scepticism about the usual drills. I found this book to be clearly written, well organized and easy to adapt to my training needs. We used several of the games at a recent office retreat to great success. I strongly recommend Games That Teach Teams to anyone who wants to get their team to work, and play, better.

More than a team activity book..........2000-04-26

if you are in the process for building a team and looking for activites to teach effective team behaviors, then this book is for you. This book can be used for a team just starting to work together or teams who have been working together for quite some time. There is much more to this book than the 21 teams provided.

The first section helps you determine what type of team you have by classifying teams. In the next section there is a model and structure for effective team development. Once you've determined the team classification and team development area, then you can use the handy matrix to select the most appropriate activity.

The book provides very helpful facilitation strategies for before, during and processing each activity. Each of the 21 activities has detailed well though out instructions and reproducible handouts. You have everything you need to facilitate any of the activities in this book.

Valuable Resource for Facilitators!.......2000-03-15

As an in-house OD consultant, I am always on the lookout for new games to use with teams and energizers for off-site meetings. The collection of games assembled here provides a wide variety of time frames and a comprehensive set of objectives for team learning. The formats of the various games are simple and yet engaging -- and you won't be hunting everywhere for props and materials. I can't wait to try these out at my next off-site meeting.

Games that Teach Teams by Steve Sugar and George Takacs, is a collection of 21 well-documented, carefully detailed, copy-ready games that help teams learn about cooperation and creativity, management and goal-setting, decision-making and communication -- and secondarily fun. It's the secondarily fun part that caught my eye. Any method that helps people develop team skills that has anything to do with fun is a method worth learning. Far too many team-building activities are built around "tasks" and "worksheets." These exercises are built around fun.

Each of the 21 games is described as a "frame game" The authors explain how ach game can be modified to focus on a different combination of skills or respond to a different team setting and composition, giving the reader more of a comprehensive instructional strategy than a collection of games. The authors also recognize that it's not just the games, but how they are led that makes for a good learning experience, taking great pains to detail facilitation techniques for each activity. They even include a table that carefully documents the skills that each activity emphasizes.

I was especially pleased to discover the inclusion of games like "ww.where and ww.when" that are specifically designed for building "CyberTeams." Here is an area of team development that is much neglected and critical to the successful deployment of the kind of communication infrastructure that technography is designed to implement.

Great Context, Very Practical.......1999-12-21

I've read this cover-to-cover and had a chance to actually use a number of the activities in it with some of my clients. This book is a rare combination of background and context that will provide a powerful grounding for new trainers, inexperienced facilitators and managers asked to help build a team while also combining great explanation and setup for a wide range of activities that senior practitioners and OD professionals can use immediately. The explanations for each activity are clear and also cover what could go wrong as well as how to modify the activity and debrief instructions. I found the matrix in the book (talking about what activities could be used for what kinds of teams and what kinds of dynamics/needs) to be especially strong. If you do OD, facilitation,or work in teams, this is a very useful book. I don't find many games and activities books that are appropriate for a wide range of users--this one is. I very highly recommend it.

I didn't know anythng about the history of the XB-70 till I read this book. It gave me the ins and outs of the whole thing. Great book!!

The best of 3 minimal books.......2003-03-05

As a book dedicated to such an historic aircraft there is surprisingly little information about the aircraft. There's lots of writing about the history surrounding the aircraft's development and political struggles, but almost no information about what the aircraft actually did (and couldn't do). The author spends a lot of pages blaming politicians for the cancellation of the aircraft without discussing it's significant technical problems. Compared to what is now available regarding the SR-71, the story of the XB-70 has yet to be thoroughly recounted.

XB-70 Valkyrie:The Ride to Valhalla.......2001-11-10

This is a history, not a picture book. While photographic collections are important, they should be supplemented with meaningful history. That is what this book does. It gives previously unreported historical details, along with supporting photography. Other books can supply the additional photographic details. This book has heart. The authors have made sure that the real story is told, not just the official version. Wouldn't it have been nice if they'd been allowed to print everything they know?

Only history of the program.......2001-06-14

The XB70 has been a great mistery for a long time. Its secrecy was largely due to the great leap in aeronautical science when the technological race between US and former CCCP was at its peak. Designed successor to B52, the XB70 has a troubled story from the start, its fortunes were forever sealed by McNamara's will to terminate the program. The book is about the history of political tribulations at all levels (USAF comands and interservice rivalry plus adverse lobbying in the Kennedy Administration and in the Congress, the last being not enough supportive). A respectable critical survey on program managment is given, providing a chronological description of machinations that overshadowed even the final experimental program.

Many details are covered but always from the historical point of view. The volume does not provide many technical facts and it still lacks a description of the airplane engine and systems, besides a precise perfomance summary is missing. The most important facet is the conversation record of the crash (XB70 ship AV002 and NF104 n°813). If the reader is looking for some Washington politics insight or behind the scene work, the narrative style is remarkable, but if he is looking for technicalities he has to wait for a new release or new bunch of declassified data.

This book is about the HISTORY of the XB-70 Valkyrie. It's not about pretty pictures. It details the historical place that the XB-70 took in the realm of Mach three aviation. It explains the lessons that were learned about mach three flight and how politics prempted what could have been accomplished. A good historical read.

Unusual way to learn history.......1999-02-23

Although purportedly about letters, this book is really about some of the most remarkable people and events throughout history. The letters, interesting in their own right, serve more as the jumping off point. Beautifully illustrated and well written, this is a fascinating book which can be sipped a little at a time -- or consumed in a single sitting! Highly recommended for any student of history of the fine art of letter writing.

As an AVM patient myself having gone through and surviving 2 brain hemorrhages, and 2 surgeries, life with an AVM is a lifelong rollercoaster ride that you can never get off of...it is both physically and emotionally devistating!
This book had a tremendous impact on my life reading it years ago, one that was life-changing and one that introduced me to many other AVM patients - 2 of these wonderful people are my friends for life...

This book is the book to read for anyone who has had brain surgre or has epilepsy. It is touching, poignant, and filled with information, from the surgeon's point of view and also from the patient's. Plus it's written as well as a good novel.
