    Book Description

    Advances in Public Interest Accounting is a research publication with two major aims. First, to provide a forum for researchers concerned with critically appraising and significantly transforming conventional accounting theory, practice, teaching and research. Second, to increase the social self-awareness of accounting practitioners, educators, and researchers, encouraging them to assume a greater responsibility for the profession's social role. We seek original manuscripts exploring all facets of this broad agenda. Illustrative of these aims, authors are concerned with:

    • expanding accounting's focus beyond the behavior of individual corporate entities, encompassing the conflicts of interest within the accounting-regulatory process and effected groups;

    • exploring alternatives to traditional economic and sociology models, beyond conventional efficiency and profitability measures of corporate performance;

    • recognizing and examining the influences of gender and feminist theory, class and race, on accounting practice, education, and research;

    • incorporating the significance of accounting as a communicative practice, as social dialogue, and as a social arbiter;

    • recognizing and examining the effect of accounting practice on environmental issues and on the externalities imposed on local and global communities;

    • examining accounting's participation in multinational expansion, consolidations, and changing economies undergoing transformations, such as Eastern and Central Europe and the Former Soviet Union, and the European Community;

    • addressing the impact of new advances in information technologies.

              Book Description

              This book is based on the Colloquium Lectures presented by Shlomo Sternberg during the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Louisville, Kentucky in January 1990. The authors delve into the mysterious role that groups, especially Lie groups, play in revealing the laws of nature by focusing on the familiar example of Kepler motion: the motion of a planet under the attraction of the sun according to Kepler's laws. Newton realized that Kepler's second law---equal areas are swept out in equal times---has to do with the fact that the force is directed radially to the sun. Kepler's second law is really the assertion of the conservation of angular momentum, reflecting the rotational symmetry of the system about the origin of the force. In today's language, we would say that the group O(3) (the orthogonal group in three dimensions) is responsible for Kepler's second law. By the end of the nineteenth century, the inverse square law of attraction was seen to have O(4) symmetry (where O(4) acts on a portion of the six-dimensional phase space of the planet). Even larger groups have since been found to be involved in Kepler motion. In quantum mechanics, the example of Kepler motion manifests itself as the hydrogen atom. Exploring this circle of ideas, the first part of the book was written with the general mathematical reader in mind.

              The remainder of the book is aimed at specialists. It begins with a demonstration that the Kepler problem and the hydrogen atom exhibit O(4) symmetry and that the form of this symmetry determines the inverse square law in classical mechanics and the spectrum of the hydrogen atom in quantum mechanics. The space of regularized elliptical motions of the Kepler problem (also known as the Kepler manifold) plays a central role in this book. The last portion of the book studies the various cosmological models in this same conformal class (and having varying isometry groups) from the viewpoint of projective geometry. The computation of the hydrogen spectrum provides an illustration of the principle that enlarging the phase space can simplify the equations of motion in the classical setting and aid in the quantization problem in the quantum setting. The authors provide a short summary of the homological quantization of constraints and a list of recent applications to many interesting finite-dimensional settings. The book closes with an outline of Kostant's theory, in which a unitary representation is associated to the minimal nilpotent orbit of SO(4,4) and in which electromagnetism and gravitation are unified in a Kaluza-Klein type theory in six dimensions.

                Book Description

                This book provides a penetrating and comprehensive description of energy selected reactions from a theoretical as well as experimental view. Three major aspects of unimolecular reactions involving the preparation of the reactants in selected energy states, the rate of dissociation of the activated molecule, and the partitioning of the excess energy among the final products, are fully discussed with the aid of 175 illustrations and over 1,000 references, most from the recent literature. Examples of both neutral and ionic reactions are presented. Many of the difficult topics are discussed at several levels of sophistication to allow access by novices as well as experts. Among the topics covered for the first time in monograph form is a discussion of highly excited vibrational/rotational states and intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution. Problems associated with the application of RRKM theory are discussed with the aid of experimental examples. Detailed comparisons are also made between different statistical models of unimolecular decomposition. Both quantum and classical models not based on statistical assumptions are described. Finally, a chapter devoted to the theory of product energy distribution includes the application of phase space theory to the dissociation of small and large clusters. The work will be welcomed as a valuable resource by practicing researchers and graduate students in physical chemistry, and those involved in the study of chemical reaction dynamics.

                  Book Description

                  Charles Fox and Jason Wolf have brought together leading researchers to produce a cutting-edge primer introducing readers to the major concepts in modern evolutionary genetics. This book spans the continuum of scale, from studies of DNA sequence evolution through proteins and development to multivariate phenotypic evolution, and the continuum of time, from ancient events that lead to current species diversity to the rapid evolution seen over relatively short time scales in experiemental evolution studies. Chapters are accessible to an audience lacking extensive background in evolutionaryy genetics but also current and in-depth enough to be of value to established researchers in evolution biology.

                    Book Description

                    Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy has recently received keen interest from various fields of spectroscopy because it provides new opportunities for analyzing optical spectra. In the 2D approach, the spectral peaks are spread over the second dimension, thereby simplifying the visualization of complex spectra consisting of many overlapped bands and enhancing spectral resolution. 2D correlation spectroscopy has been applied to a wide range of science and technology such as life science, polymer science, and engineering, food and agricultural technology, as well as material science. This proceedings covers the wide aspects of 2D correlation spectroscopy ranging from theory to applications in these fields. This book offers a good opportunity to learn the state-of-the-art and future trends in 2D correlation spectroscopy.

                      Scathing satire! Neither "Fractured Fairy Tales" nor "Politically Correct Fairy Tales," these Bedtime Stories take you where "Once upon a time" never dared to before!

                      Fifty contemporary takes on myths, legends, fairy tales, and Bible stories, "Bedtime Stories for Insomniacs" focuses primarily on human nature, socially accepted cruelty, the victim culture, pop psychology, puerile "uplift" books (if you're looking for uplift, buy a Wonderbra), the destructive downside to traditionalism, taking refuge in clichés and catchphrases as a means of avoiding reality, and the catastrophic consequences of a dumbed-down society. And the sentences are shorter than that last one.

                      this book needs a MAP!With such a geographical intensive subject as this, i feel that a map would have helped me get a feel for were the missions were flown and the vast distances that they covered.Other than that ,this is a great read, curtis peebles has really done his homework on this one.It basiclly covers the SECRET flights between the late 40's and early 60's. Just remamber,have an atlas by your side when you read this one.highly recomended.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2003-03-10

                      I had to read this book for a research paper about the Cold War, and must admit, found a great deal of enjoyment in it. It explains, down to the smalles detail, what took place in terms of aerial reconnaissance in the 1950, and at the same it is neatly divided into small sections so that its easy to find information quickly

                      4 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2002-01-18

                      Shadow Flights examines an already well-covered subject with rich detail and plenty of new information. The reader gets the "feel" of the pilots' experience flying these dangerous missions and offers interesting details about flights over China that aren't covered nearly as much by other works on the subject.

                      Peebles has always been one of the best writers on intelligence matters, in my opinion, and Shadow Flights is no exception. It's definitely worth the read.

                      4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2001-08-13

                      I am a great reader of war and cold war books and this is quite good.

                      The US needed intelligence on the Soviet Union. There was no way using traditional intelligence methods that she could do this. As such she developed air reconnaissance to a new degree.

                      The writer write very well about this development. He gives an great history of the development of these planes. I found it fascinating.

                      As too the political problems that emerged around these flights. The arguments for these missions that despite the large political cost that eventually occurred (as the result of Gary Powers capture showed) were worth paying.

                      You can feel what the pilots on the missions felt though their stories on the missions that they flew. I felt the excitement that the pilots must have felt on their trips.

                      I look forward to reading more from this writer.

                      4 out of 5 stars An Insightful Look into Cold War Aerial Surveillance.......2001-08-13

                      As in "Dark Eagles," Peebles again demonstrates in "Shadow Flights" an amazing amount of research and insight into the world of classified and black-project aviation during the Cold War. Unlike "Dark Eagles," "Shadow Flights" is a much more integrated read, but is no less informative. Peebles accurately and conscisely recounts the history of Cold War reconnaissance flights and methods in a manner that is interesting to both the informed and casual reader. In so doing, Peebles covers everything from the development history of the U-2 to the shootdown of a USAF C-130A, s/n 60528, over Soviet Armenia in September 1958, including enhanced Soviet gun camera photos of the doomed ELINT aircraft.

                      Though the book lacks the detailed minutae of "The Price of Vigilance," it also covers a much larger subject and does so superbly. Reading this book immediately before Norman Polmar's slightly more recent U-2 history, "Spyplane," I found Peeble's style to be more accomodating to the average reader, and "Shadow Flights" in general to be more informative and accurate.

                      As a Hanover native, I was nine years old when I witnessed the 1963 re-enactment of the Battle of Hanover. School field trips to the Gettysburg Battlefield sealed my lifelong interest in the Civil War.

                      This book provides numerous, fascinating first-hand accounts of the events between June 27 and July 3, 1863. Dozens of photographs from that era and a battle map are included. It is a treasure trove of anecdotal bits that would be hard to find anywhere else. For that reason alone, I would recommend this book to ANY reader: casual or "fanatic." Much information is also given to the years before and after the Civil War, with particular attention given to the various remembrances in later years.

                      The epilogue includes some intriguing facts. My favorite: as of the 1962 publication date there were about 36,000 residents of the Hanover area, of which about 97% were native born. No wonder so many family names from the 1860's are still well represented in the area today. With increased college attendance, interstate highways, and the influx of Marylanders seeking tax relief, I wonder what the percentage of native-born residents is today?

                      There is one serious fault in the book. There is no index, which is especially necessary in this case because the book is not arranged chronologically. Due to the prevalance of individual accounts, the chronology of the book is quite disjointed. This may have been exacerbated by the fact that there is no attributed author, rather a publication committe of nine men (one of whom was my grandfather, C. Homer Meredith.) I get the impression that several different authors compiled their individual efforts with little concern for overlap -- which is a good thing in many ways, but disconcerting if one is expecting a more typical layout. Therefore, a thorough index would be extremely helpful. Hopefully, an index will be included in a new edition for the 150th-year commemoration in 2013.

                          From the supplier: Plans in 1999 to build the world's tallest building in Melbourne, Australia, are analyzed, focusing on the symbolic cultural meaning the building would have for the city and whether the $1.5 bil spent on building such a skyscraper would be better spent on social programs. Topics include architectural plans for the building, Australian unemployment, the engineers who would benefit from the construction of the building, and construction financing.

                              THE OTHER FIFTIES challenges the nostalgic notion that the decade was populated by placid conformists. Essays on Elvis, Kim Novak, Rock Hudson, Nikita Khrushchev (among others) show how
                              television, Hollywood, Broadway, and the book industry assaulted conventional mores and helped make us what we are today
