This is NO Satellite Orbits for Dummies............2007-08-24

I found this book to be extremely well written with just the right mix of explanation and formulaes.

I bought this book in order to complete a project for a University assignment and the CD containing all of the source code in the book, made my life much easier. I could quickly whip up a working prototype of exactly what I needed.

I would recommend this to anyone for who was wondering how Physics and the laws of Nature relate to equations and programming.

To the authors, thank you for a wonderful book - bringing me up to speed in a few short weeks on a very complex subject.

Superb textbook on Maths of Satellite Orbit determinations.......2003-04-26

The sections dealing with orbit estimation are very sketchy. Needs to filled out with specific and detailed computational algorithms (e.g. Escobal).

Outstanding book.......2001-07-11

This book is a very thorough review of Orbital Mechanics. Current, up to date material that goes from the basics to graduate level. Outstanding CDROM has a lot of source code and compiled applications. The best book I've come across on this subject, highly recommended.

The best book in the field of numerical astrodynamics so far.......2000-10-19

This book gives a very good overview of numerical orbit determination methods. I would recommend it to anyone who has the basic knowledge of astrodynamics and is interested in orbit determination. It deals with different force models, numerical integration methods, time and reference systems and filter methods. Every chapter has exercises at its end. These exercises are extremely helpfull for understanding the theory of this chapter. The CD-ROM accompanying the book is absolutely great. It contains all source code (C++) for the different exercises in the book.

Alchemy can't be science--common sense tells us as much. But perhaps common sense is not the best measure of what science is, or was. In this book, Bruce Moran looks past contemporary assumptions and prejudices to determine what alchemists were actually doing in the context of early modern science. Examining the ways alchemy and chemistry were studied and practiced between 1400 and 1700, he shows how these approaches influenced their respective practitioners' ideas about nature and shaped their inquiries into the workings of the natural world. His work sets up a dialogue between what historians have usually presented as separate spheres; here we see how alchemists and early chemists exchanged ideas and methods and in fact shared a territory between their two disciplines.

Distilling Knowledge suggests that scientific revolution may wear a different appearance in different cultural contexts. The metaphor of the Scientific Revolution, Moran argues, can be expanded to make sense of alchemy and other so-called pseudo-sciences--by including a new framework in which "process can count as an object, in which making leads to learning, and in which the messiness of conflict leads to discernment." Seen on its own terms, alchemy can stand within the bounds of demonstrative science.

After reading several popular books on alchemy, it was a relief to find this scholarly, yet easy-to-read, history. Moran sets alchemy in context through time and shows how it fits into the scientific revolution. All the major alchemical heavies are there--including some fascinating material on Paracelsus. Also discusses such things as the evolution of the alchemy/chemistry teaching laboratory. Really a satisfying and fascinating read.

An Exciting Must-Read Book of Words in Motion.......2006-03-13

When I first scanned the pages of Little Pieces of Heaven by Oluwadahunsi, I realized that this review would be unlike any other book I had previously reviewed. It consists of 315 thoughts and meditations-some extremely short, others longer, containing several lines. Very quickly I understood the reasoning behind the title of this book. The "little pieces" are gems of wisdom, obviously inspired by the intellect of the author and, even more importantly, the indwelling spirit. The thought-provoking words offer guidance for daily living, showing wit, wisdom, and knowledge of life with all its joys, temptations, and man-made entrapments.

Though the selections contains invaluable advice and consequences of actions, every so often, I found myself smiling in awe at the method of presentation and the utilization of word skills that so effectively speak reason and reality to the heart. When ingested properly, the messages are words in motion, moving one toward a more fulfilling life.

There are many examples I would like to share, but I have chosen only the following four, hoping to entice prospective readers to purchase the book:

66. He points a finger at you, points three at himself and his thumb at God.
95. When Satan says, "Don't worry, you've got time," worry, because you haven't got time! Time was yesterday! Today is second chance! Tomorrow is too late!
272. Beware the crutch of prayer! He who spends the day saying, "I'm praying, I'm praying," is talking to himself.

Readers will find Little Pieces of Heaven to be an excellent daily devotional and practical guide. By reading one or more of the selections, pondering the meaning, and applying it to their lives, individuals will grow in their spiritual walk and in their ability to function in a problematic, fast-paced world with other human beings. We get up, eat breakfast, go to work, eat lunch, work some more, return home, eat dinner, watch television, and go the bed. The next day we repeat the same routine. Over and over we hear the words, "There isn't enough time in the day to get everything done." Well, this book provides powerful meditations and thoughts that are packaged so that very little time is needed to make a big difference in the thinking of individuals.

It is my suggestion that you purchase several copies of this book as they would make a perfect birthday or holiday gift. I can't imagine any individual who would not want to give a friend, regardless of the occasion, little pieces of heaven.

Russell McLogan has done just that in this well-written autobiography. Drafted out of college at age 18 in 1944, he was trained as a rifleman and then sent to the Philippines as an infantry replacement. There he joined the battle hardened 6th Infantry Division on the Shimbu Line near Manila. Wounded in combat in northern Luzon, he spent 89 days in Army hospitals on Luzon and Leyte. When the atomic bomb abruptly ended the war, he was returned to duty just in time to sail off to Korea where he served in the Army of Occupation. Boy Soldier is about a young man's coming of age during this period of tremendous historical change. It includes much well-researched history of the Army's replacement training system, the Liberation of the Philippines, the dropping of the atomic bombs, the American-Russian occupation of Korea, and the Army's post-war demobilization--the people, places, and events that shaped a young life. Although written in a scholarly mode with endnotes, bibliography and index, it is very readable with the humor, violence, sexual situations and sometimes raw language as it actually happpened. Text is supplemented with 72 illustrations and 15 maps.

I'm eagerly awaiting the movie..........2006-08-12

Very rarely do you find a "history" book that sneaks the history in before you even know it. Russ McLogan does just that in "Boy Soldier." You find yourself caught up in the wonderful narrative of the life of the young boy-turned-soldier. The humor, the violence, the hasty training, are all described within the background of WWII. The historical, social, and political accounts are dead-on accurate--being told by someone who was actually there and has the scar to prove it. This is truly one history book that you will not be able to put down...written by a boy-turned-soldier-turned-historian.

A darn good read.......2006-06-29

A very interesting and well presented book about the liberation of the Philippine Islands and the history of the American 6th Infantry Division. The author does a very nice job of integrating daily life a soldier's story to produce a book that covers a lot of ground easily. I really enjoyed this book as there are not many first person accounts of the Pacific Theater, particularly, from men who where in the Army rather than the Marines. Also has nice description of the events of the war that paralleled the author's experiences.

Excellent Account.......2005-09-03

I was at the mall during Christmastime and he was sitting in front of the Border's Express. He seemed a little lonely, so I stopped by and talked to him. It was very interesting listening to him talk, especially as he looked up and noticed I was wearing a USS Enterprise Hat (CV-6, not the other) and he started to talk about the Battle of Leyte. After listening to him, I bought a copy of the book and he signed it.

When I picked it up and started to read it, I wasn't disappointed. It was a story I could relate to since he's from this area. He put stuff in comparison to stuff around Detroit and that made it seem more realistic to me. It was a very well written book and very well researched (because he put the bigger perspective with his story).

A Terrific Read.......2005-05-19

I enjoyed this book immensely, and strongly recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in WWII. I'm a bit of a military history buff, and so have read a good deal on the subject. But I enjoyed Mr. McLogan's book the most, by far. Other soldiers' biographies I've read have covered simply the individuals' combat experiences. While these are always highly interesting, the author of "Boy Soldier" discusses not only his time in battle, but also the experiences he went through both before and after his time on the front lines. I found especially interesting his descriptions of his arduous infantry training, and the details he provided of the lengthy medical treatment he received after being wounding in Luzon. Of interest also were the behind-the-lines duties he had to perform when he first arrived in the Philippines. He also recounts, in detail, the sea voyage he had to endure en route to the Pacific theater and, after hostilities with Japan ended, his voyage to Korea. I learned a lot from this book. For example, I had always believed that all seriously wounded American soldiers in WWII were eventually returned back to the U.S. for hospitalization and rehabilitation. Not true, as it turns out. There are many other lessons in this book. As it is with watching a good movie, you don't want this story to end. It's one of the most entertaining and informative works I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

Phenomenal account of a life caught up in the whirlwind!.......2001-03-12

I had the honor of meeting Mr. McLogan at a book signing where his reading honestly convinced me to buy this book. I now cherish the signed copy I own. This book is exceptionally well written which honestly surprised me, Mr. McLogan is an engineer by trade (so am I). The writing is dynamic, captivating, vivid and sensory. This is an exceptional autobiography combining memories and official documents. This is a phenomenally written book about the life of a young man caught up in the turbulent 40's. That being said, this is not a war book, this is a book about a man's life. Mr. McLogan does not dwell on the time he spent in combat, but does cover that period as well. This book details his life before he was drafted, what training and traveling with the army was like, his wounding, recovery, and as an occupational soldier in Korea after the war and finally going home again. Mr. McLogan does not try to make himself a hero, and in my opinion, he doesn't have to, he simply is.
I have found no better written personal account of a young American's life during the war. This book took my breath away literally; especially the parts where the author reminisces about walking hand in hand with a high school sweetheart while sitting in a foxhole in the Philippines. Mr. McLogan was lucky enough to survive the ordeal and went on to be truly one of the heroes I have always looked up to. Not a war monger or a violent person, but simply a young man who answered his countries call, did his duty, stood his ground and came back and built a life for himself. I only wish my grandfather had written this book!
